"Middle America Coming Out of the Recession? Of the 20 strongest metro areas in the United States, 14 lie between the Mississippi River and New Mexico. By: Keaton Gray Published July 1, 2009 Buzz up! EMAIL THIS ARTICLE PRINTER FRIENDLY COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE BUY A REPRINT AddThis Although every metropolitan area has suffered job losses and a decline in gross metropolitan product, city centers in Texas and Oklahoma, among others, look as if they will lead the way out of the recession. Judged by changes in employment, GMP, and housing prices, none of the 20 strongest overall performers extends west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. California alone is home to seven of the 20 weakest performers. There's a "last-in, first-out" effect here, says Alan Berube, a senior fellow and research director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program and MetroMonitor report that assesses the nation's 100 largest metro areas. "This recession is battering the interior west, Florida, and the manufacturing...

"Dr. Chunlei Guo at the University of Rochester has developed a method of altering the properties of metal so that it will even help water defy gravity. The trick is in changing the metal using a laser, but not just any laser – a femtosecond laser. Dr. Guo is a professor of optics at the University of Rochester. He and his assistant, Anatoliy Vorobyev have been experimenting with the effect that a femtosecond laser has on metal. He has changed the color of such metals as Platinum, silver and aluminum by changing the properties of the metals using the laser. The femtosecond laser works as follows: …a femtosecond laser, produces pulses lasting only a few quadrillionths of a second—a femtosecond is to a second what a second is to about 32 million years. During its brief burst, Guo’s laser unleashes as much power as the entire electric grid of North America does, all focused onto a spot the size of a needlepoint…. The laser causes the surface properties of the metal to change by forming...

""New York's senior senator tells News 8 that he doesn't want Rochester used as a guinea pig for Time Warner Cable's new tiered bandwidth system. Sen. Charles Schumer will be in Rochester on Thursday afternoon. He said Wednesday afternoon that the visit is in regards to TWC's plan, and what's being done to stop it. Rochester has been designated as one of two test markets for the tiered billing system. That plan has been revised by TWC since it was introduced at the beginning of April, among a chorus of customer complaints. TWC says the "consumption-based billing" is necessary to address soaring Internet use, which the cable and Internet provider says could cause "brownouts" down the road. The most basic tier of the plan would provider 1 gigabyte per month of Net access for $15, with an extra $2 tacked on for every additional gigabyte. There will be higher-capacity plans ranging from $29 to $75 monthly. Additional usage will be billed at $1 per gigabyte, with overage fees capped at $75 per month."

"Great post by my friend Steve Shapiro - Founder of Digsby in Rochester NY "As a Rochester company, we are in tune with a lot of what goes on in our hometown. We don’t usually meddle in local issues but this is a topic we are all passionate about so we wanted share it with all of you. Time Warner Cable announced that it would be switching from a flat monthly rate for Internet access to tiered pricing that is based on consumption. The $29.99 plan will be capped at 10GB of bandwidth and you will be charged $1/GB for any usage beyond that. If you want your good ‘ole unlimited bandwidth Internet access you will end up paying as much as $150 per month! So how much is 10GB anyway? They make it sound like they are only doing this to stop all those software-pirating BitTorrent users. Here is a legitimate use case. If you purchase the high-def version of Quantum of Solace on iTunes, that is a 3.54GB download. Buy three movies in one month and you hit the 10GB limit. Besides the above use case, there are inno"

Nate Anderson: "But the only favors being done here are to TWC's bottom line. That base rate works out to a truly jaw-dropping $6 per GB per month, and it's so far out of line with competitors' plans as to shock even the most cynical heart."

Does anyone else think our city logo a bit drab, unimaginative, imposing, maybe Eastern bloc, or even brutalist, like some of our buildings?
