FriendFeed on the Kindle
friendfeed_on_kindle.jpg
FriendFeed, Kindle, Bret Taylor, and even a hint of Obama. Pure "like" bait for sure. : ) - DeWitt Clinton
I have been baited :) - Bret Taylor
No CSS on the Kindle? - Paul Buchheit
The regular user pages weren't rendering at all, so I switched to /iphone/ and it worked. Wait, does no one in FFWHQ have a Kindle 2? - DeWitt Clinton
I thought Tudor was getting one... - EricaJoy
For browser compatibility testing purposes, of course. - DeWitt Clinton
Turns out there was a Kindle 1 and a Kindle 2 in the office. All work has now ceased. - Casey Muller
lol - j1m
Get some colour and come graphics in there. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Does that case come with the Kindle? Looks nice. - Benjamin Golub
Pure pleather-like goodness: http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-.... The case has a clever little hook mechanism that makes it easy to pop the Kindle in and out, but you can definitely use the Kindle with the case on. Feels and looks more like a book with the case on, plus it protects the screen. They say it is real leather, which is a shame, as it feels like pleather and frankly I'd rather it was fake. - DeWitt Clinton
Can you please check if it shows UTF-8 characters? Like my name? - Vinay | विनय
I am starting to get pretty excited about those... was pretty skeptical at first, but that is going to be a game changer. - Susan Beebe
WOW - zizukabi
Bump. Almost a year into the Kindle 2 and it is still going strong. Nothing worth replacing it with on the market yet. - DeWitt Clinton
FriendFeed hasn't been one-upped yet either. - DeWitt Clinton
DeWitt, any opinions on the upcoming Android-based enTourage eDGe (other than the idiotic capitalization)?: http://friendfeed.com/webmave... - Michael R. Bernstein
@Michael - I had never heard of it. But I'll admit that, off all the things I wished my Kindle could do, fold in half was not one of them. And this may sound like heresy, but I'm not sure the high-level OS stack is the limiting factor in of ebook readers. Give me more surface area (Kindle DX size), a thinner bezel, higher resolution and maybe color, ditch the keyboard (okay, so maybe an touchscreen IME would help), a brushed aluminum body, and keep the thickness and weight constant, and you have an upgrade. - DeWitt Clinton
and the battery life - Deepak Singh
Ugh. It's like 1993 all over again. Whoever can figure out how to make high resolution, eInk screens in color, not necessarily with a rapid refresh rate, will pretty much own this device space for a while. - Bill Strathearn
I don't need color in my books so I don't miss it on the Kindle. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
ok, i tried to load it on my Kindle and it won't log me in. suggestions? - Karoli
Michael Fidler

Great work! - Nia
I reshare this to Ideas & Inspiration room :) These are so realistic! - Kristian Salonen
I'm sorry but this is unbelievable:) I'll give credit to the artist upon more convincing proof! The photogenic look of the tiger and lion really helps the artist's case though:) - Roney Smith
I'm with Roney... I find this hard to believe... or maybe I'm just jealous that I can't even get stick people right! - Jasmin Smith
I don't believe it. Too amazing. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I'm with Rah - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Only the lion looks like its drawn - embee
The bear and rhino look drawn, too. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
very very talented. Wow they look like B&W pics you know photography. - Gabriella Sannino
These are amazing, were they done by you? - Angelo Rodrigues
Nice photographs - Rafael Robayna
@michael, if they weren't drawn by you, at least tell us who the artist is and the link - LouCypher
Link please? - Jason Wehmhoener
wow - Carolyn Chan
being slightly skeptical, i'm going to say these were done with pencil by a printer of some sorts... #justsayin - Enrique Gutierrez
they're beautiful, but skeptical as well - Jennifer Van Grove
Would need to see higher quality images to see if they are pencil or not - too many jpg artifacts to tell. - Luke Addison from twhirl
Stupefied. - Parth Awasthi
want proof - Jérôme Flipo
Wow!! Yeah it's pretty amazing what they can draw with a pencil nowadays, deviantART has lots of great pencil art. - Kol Tregaskes
Michael, who is the artist? - Kol Tregaskes
wow, cool! - Sarah Perez
you cannot win on the interwebs. draw some crap it doesn't get noticed. draw something amazing in pencil and people say it's not real. - Joe Breen
I'm really happy everyone liked these. They're my most liked entry to date, Thanks! There also seems to be some question about whether these are actually Pencil Drawings.I can assure you that they are. When I get home, I should have the links. I have more drawings, too. - Michael Fidler from fftogo
O_O WOW...Stunning - Anna Haro
Wow, these are stunning!! - Susan Beebe
Yes, especially the tiger. Reminds me of that "Tiger, tiger burning bright." - Melanie Reed
Alright, Mike - I believe you. These are awesome. Good job! - Enrique Gutierrez
HOLY CRAP. - Chieze Okoye
no way! - Mister Groonk
Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks! - Michael Fidler
Absolutely awesome, Michael. You are extremely talented. Everyone should repost these pix and help to make you famous. You should be doing this full time - you obviously have some passion for this. Bravo. - Chris Loft
These are really beautiful, Michael. Do you sell them? - Shannon Jiménez
Chris, I would love to say they're mine, but it's not true. I've had them for a while, but I'll find the artists names. It will just require a little backtracking. Besides, they deserve the credit; all I did was find them:-) - Michael Fidler
Cut the bullshit! :) Photos are very good. - Burçak Çubukçu
I draw alot in pencil, but they are amazing, the best for me is the girl, that is the most photo-like one. :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I agree Rob, the girl is amazing. My favorite by far! Wait until you see it close up! It's really had to tell, even up close! - Michael Fidler
Burçak Çubukçu If these were photographs, they would be very good. As Pencil Drawings,(which they are), they're amazing. - Michael Fidler
Wow, amazingly realistic - Threepwood
@Michael Fidler did you draw them? How can you so sure? - Burçak Çubukçu
dont look like it - Prakash
@ Michael Fidler don't push so hard :) - Burçak Çubukçu
@Burçak Çubukçu I can't tell if your serious now or just kidding around. I hope your just having fun! If you are serious, I've never given you a reason to question my integrity, nor do I ever intend to. However, the second set is up now, so judge them for yourself, but don't judge me! http://ff.im/1BJh5 BTW, I messed up and reposted the shot of the women again. Oh well. Hope you like them:-) - Michael Fidler
@Michael: try deviantART, not Picasa, to submit your artworks - LouCypher
WOW "I can't believe it's in pencil" - sofarsoShawn
LouCypher, I know it well, but I don't see why I would want to do that. I hope everyone knows by now that they're not mine? I'm sorry, but I can't say it any clearer than that. - Michael Fidler
nah, i don't believe it is done in pencil. i am sure it is photoshopped :) - hasin hayder
These would be great even for photos. - tomit
i'm not able to comprehend - Varun Shenoy
I'm finding this both interesting and humorous at the same time. There's a separate message board where this post is being discussed and it has another forty comments on it already. I think its great how this has created some lively discussion, considering that when I posted this I was doubtful if anyone would even like it. When I went to sleep last night there was only had 3 or 4 likes... more... - Michael Fidler
Very interesting. I would like to see them up close and in person...just to make sure. Bill said it's real and possible. Your 2nd set of picts look like pencil. Nice work in finding these! - LaFern Cusack
Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found another post which helps to prove that these are done in pencil. I had my doubts about a few of them because I collected them from several different sites over time, but the site Kol found has done a great job pulling together an impressive collection of these drawings and more. Take a look - http://www.flickzzz.com/2009... - Michael Fidler
Actually there are more than what this site shows. There's an entire set with the cats(little cats), which I have, and there's a new portrait set. - Michael Fidler
Found your post here, Michael. :-) I tried my best to find the artists. - Kol Tregaskes
Amazing and very very very good.... Very impressive ... - Linda Zeek-Bobinski
fake. http://lenscratch.blogspot.com/2009... Even if your not claiming to be the artist, these are photographs, well except the woman, thats pencil - james foor
Yeah we know, thanks though, James. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package. - The Wimp
A bell does ring here. And I am remembering why I was so attracted to the tiger...and the lion for that matter. These are exact replicas of prints I had in our bedroom when I lived in Dallas. I had bought the prints (in color) at a department store, - Melanie Reed
Actually, I have learned quite a bit about these drawing since I made this post. Not only have I discovered all of the artists, but I've learned more about how they are created. They are always copied from a photograph or painting, but usually a photograph. It is extremely time consuming and detail orientated work. There are many other artists besides the ones featured here who practice... more... - Michael Fidler
Most of them have portfolio's on deviantart.com and their work is truly amazing even if they are copies of other artists work. I suppose with this level of detail, they have to start with something. Nevertheless, I'm still in awe of their talent. Melanie, the animal prints you refer to are from a very well renowned photographer. The originals are B&W I'll look it up later but I do have... more... - Michael Fidler

Niche shows like TWiT just can't get anywhere in the mainstream, unfortunately. - Ghworg
but niche marketing brings higher ad revenue per viewer... and that makes up for it... leo also likes the higher quality of the audience (ie we're more involved) - Chris Heath

Good point, Ryan. - 1x29
Do you guys think the touch was suppose to have a camera? - Andrew Fontes
Not every iPod is sold in the States. Here in Australia, FM is still king - Johnny Worthington
good point johnny... i know a lot of people who listen to the radio too here in the us - Chris Heath
Can the iPod with FM radio *transmit* in FM? Like those FM transmitter add ons you can use in the car? - 1x29
I would use the FM radio function. In the UK there are a number of sports talk shows etc that I would tune into. - 1x29
It's not a controversy, nobody expects Steve Jobs to admit that Apple had a problem with camera on iPod Touch and removed it last moment. - notagolfer
Isn't it about access? If you dump on a company long enough, they will just stop inviting you. It's a balance - Johnny Worthington
showtunes are clearly not ethical :) - Jay Cuthrell from BuddyFeed
Delaying for a HD camera? - Johnny Worthington
“So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don’t need to add new stuff. We need to get the price down where everyone can afford it.” — SJ - notagolfer
There probably was an HD camera issue. I think it is obvious there was either a tech issue. Has anyone seen the iTouch 3.1.1 firmware? - kenneth glenn
a 3g RF amp in CMOS means that we have much slimmer and cheaper shiny things on the way... voids today are pickups for feature or svelt - Jay Cuthrell from BuddyFeed
An iPod touch with camera would be more useful than an iPod nano with camera. Wifi uploading? Bluetooth uploading? I'd not be fussed on synching with a cable to get an image I'd taken earlier in the day up online. - 1x29
It would also pretty much negate my need for an iPhone though. - 1x29
I have the iTouch firmware 3.1.1 on my 1st gen iPod Touch. - George Brickner
Less Feldman leg please... - 1x29
the iphone form factor is destined to become jewelry - Jay Cuthrell

When good twits.... turn bad - Glenn Williams
Ryan Block, keeping it classy. Or trying to. - Kevykev
It is also about a single voice. If you only go to David for your Apple news then you are foolish. The web facilitates a range of voices. The NYT's is just another URL - Johnny Worthington

We need a website that aggregates user ratings! wait a minute... - Brad Connell
Super Poking right into my brain - Johnny Worthington

If facebook enhances intelligence and twitter diminishes it, what does TWiT do? - Ghworg
Ghworg, let's put it this way: at least you can talk to famous people on Twitter. - Eric Geller
I know, TWiT screws with your intelligence! :-) - Ghworg
I wonder how much Webex/Cisco would pay to displace GoToMeeting/Citrix from the ad slots here. - Jay Cuthrell

There is no live studio audience :) - notagolfer
Bryan: Very true [PayPal] but there's an opportunity for someone. I just hate how trapping PayPal is. You can't even pay some people with a credit card without signing up [I've recently had this situation trying to watch a live stream of the Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race.] - 1x29

I love Leo's references to the ghey stuff...LOL - 1x29

Johnny and the Mothers are playing "Stompin' at the Savoy" in Vermont tonight. (guess that voice transcription reference) - Jay Cuthrell
OneGear: I thought you can use your checking account without using a credit card on paypal? - Bryan Lee
Bryan: Only if you have an account. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
This show is awesome! - Chris
I love the idea of charitywater. How cool is that? I take our well here for granted. - shelter watch
To use your checking account you still need to sign up for PayPal. If you don't link an account it takes 5 or so days to clear as an eCheck - not so good when you're wanting to pay $10 or so to get access to a live feed on the day it's happening. I was quite happy to just pay using my credit card but because I already had a non-linked account I didn't have the option to just use my credit card - as soon as I put my card billing address it defaulted to using me as a PayPal account. - 1x29
Shelter: Yeah, I'm well impressed with the Charity Water idea. Their promo video is awesome to watch. - 1x29
gdgt.com seems awesome, but I'd be embarrassed to use it. I got practically nothing in gadgets. :( - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
"Leo has sixteen gadgets and wants nothing." -- Chris has no gadgets and wants EVERYTHING. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Thank heavens for Loren's puppets :) - 1x29
Puppet Jason sounds like the Laslo guy that used to come on late night infomercials - kenneth glenn
WTF was that I just saw? - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Chris: It was internet entertainment gold :) - 1x29
That much is obvious. That doesn't mean I know what it was. :p - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Chris: True :P - 1x29
that was a lot of ground covered - Jay Cuthrell
I'm just glad there was no nudity - Jay Cuthrell
Possibly one of the best TWiTs of the eyar - kenneth glenn
@kenneth i agree - Chris
Half nudity with Loren's legs. - 1x29
heh - Jay Cuthrell
Show was a 11 :D - 1x29

BTW, OneGear knows how I feel. He is stuck here too. :) - Bryan Lee
You need a dump button. - shelter watch
Bryan: If I find a way out, I'll take y'all with me :P - 1x29
OneGear: I'm holding you to that LoL - Bryan Lee
Good episode, was worth the late night. - Lloyd Hughes
I love listening to the "After Show" talk as well. - Bryan Lee
Bryan: Yeah, after show is the best. - 1x29
Adam Savage did the talk about failure recently... at defcon and maker faire - Alex Brown
Very important point Leo is making. Focus on doing what you enjoy doing. Whilst you CAN do the other things, doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it. - 1x29
TMI. - shelter watch
Don't forget the California Assemblymember Mike Duvall lesson: the 'mike is always hot'. - shelter watch
One of the best TWiT's. Loren Feldman as John C. Dvorak, Jason Calacanis as himself, and Ryan Block as Tom Merritt. - Kevykev
They should record the After Twit conversations and post it as an extra podcast. They could monetize the extra shows. There are a lot of good candid moments afterwards. - Bryan Lee
love the show, but *way way* too many sponsor ads on this episode:( - Mark Rahmani
one sponsor per half hour is normal, and this show was over 2 hours... i think that's pretty fair - Chris Heath
ANOTHER annoying useless Jason Calacanis name dropping episode. And who is this butt-kissing "comic" with him? Jason Calacanis may be a great computer entrepreneur, but he's a lousy interview to listen to for more than 5 mins. - Gregg Hudson
ANOTHER annoying useless Gregg Hudson comment. And who does he think he is dissing Loren Feldman like that? Gregg Hudson may be a great guy that nobody's ever heard of, but he's a lousy friendfeeder, with only one social connection, and this one lonely comment. ;-P - Chris Heath
Just heard the show !! I'm an Indian listening from India and I agree.... you guys really crack me up with that Indian accent. Dvorak, for once, does it better than you Leo - Raseel
Raseel, i don't think dvorak was doing any of the voices - check the video at http://odtv.me - Chris Heath
FYI, on the Nano FM thing and local radio - actually BOTH the Falcons and Braves are aired in Atlanta on FM in large, mainstream stations on the weekends. - j0nydzine
Dave Winer
The GDGT live coverage of the Apple rollout is proof that Twitter is not what's needed for the news system of the future. You need pictures, and instant updating, and it has to stay up under a heavy load. http://live.gdgt.com/2009...
Wish someone would invent some sort of cloud for RSS that would make things realtime. - Rich
Heh. One thing GDGT doesn't do is what we're doing right now -- it needs a place for users to kibitz. - Dave Winer
embedded pictures are available through client handling of included links. there is a twitter stream api http://apiwiki.twitter.com/Streami... though it is still in early stages - Mike Chelen
True - between the various live sites and FF it's clear that real time is the only way. Can't wait to see the fruits of RSSCloud and PubSubHubbub. - Rich
Rich: one solution is XMPP which uses XML, the language underlying RSS. there are more news options that work well in various situations - Mike Chelen
Good work by the way on making the internet work! Seems you've had a hand in a fair few of the key technologies making things work… - Rich
Yeah, XMPP seems promising as well - though it doesn't seem easy to use as a developer - never really worked out how to set up a server etc. - Rich
Rich, check out AppEngine's XMPP support: http://code.google.com/appengi... I used it to write a PubSubHubbub to XMPP transport in less than an hour last night. - Matt Mastracci
Ooh - that looks interesting... - Rich
I don't know Java, but perhaps the same API is exposed using Python... - Rich
Ah - Rich
Predicable URLs are the best thing! - Rich
Yeah, AppEngine is good with Java/Python parity. If I were integrating XMPP into an application, I'd choose AppEngine to host the XMPP part of things. It's very stable and takes a huge management load off your shoulders. - Matt Mastracci
I'll have a look at that - XMPP is on my list of things that I don't know enough about... - Rich
Rich: there are existing XMPP / Jabber servers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... and libraries available to use, some of the newer alternatives include pubsubhubbub http://code.google.com/p... and simple update protocol (SUP) http://code.google.com/p... and google wave - Mike Chelen

Robert Scoble
My (at the time 14-year-old) son argued porn and censorship with a FCC Commissioner and people are up in arms that the President is talking with their kids? This country is just so idiotic sometimes. I guess they forgot what the last President was doing on 9/11. That is right, talking with school kids. Sigh.
Amen, Mr. Scoble, Amen. - Michael
It amazes at all of the lows people do to bring the President down. It's rather pathetic. - Minu Nianda
Heaven forbid anyone just step back and thinks people could be up to a couple good things, good grief. - Chris
Sadly, I think that (general) America has forgotten that every society before us has crumbled, be it from war, poverty, starvation, political dispute every society has fallen. It's just a ticker now as to when we follow suit. - Adam
Please. I have no problem with our President talking to our kids. As long as I'm in the room as well in order to call his BS. No matter who the President is at the time. - Chris Kalaboukis
completely different - bush was reading to students - not pitching his agenda. read the paper the dept of education sent to the schools. and you liberals forget the last time a president spoke to school kids was in 91 when Bush Sr talked about staying off of drugs - and you liberals screamed and yelled that it was inappropriate. now its ok. i love the liberal hypocrisy. - Tony Kanzia
Chris: you sir are an idiot. You can do that at home. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Typical liberal - if you don't agree with them, then you're an idiot. What a shocking response. - Tony Kanzia
I took my son to see a Whitehouse and President I despised. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Chris, you think teachers are any less fallible? Do you accompany your children to school and sit with them throughout the day to call BS on things a teacher might say as well? - Andru Edwards
This is all so ridiculous. If you don't agree with what he's saying, teach them to be proud of that opportunity, teach them to listen to their President, and then talk to them about the things you don't agree with when they get home. Don't conservatives believe in family values any more? - Jesse Stay
Tony: I live this stuff. Have you taken your son to see a President you didn't like? I have. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Chris & Tony, thanks for being on hand to demonstrate the exact kind of intolerance that Robert is talking about. - Jeff Harbert
what i think got everyone up in arms was the curriuculm that went along w/ the president's speech. while this has since been taken down, people feel they are being told from the government what to teach their kids - Jonathan Jesse
E Pluribus Unum - "Out of one, many". Once the President is chosen, we all have to unite. We don't have to agree, but he is still the representative of this nation and we should respect, and be proud of that. - Jesse Stay
Tony how is Obama pitching his agenda to kids when he's simply telling them to stay in school? Give me a break. - Minu Nianda
or that bush sr. talked with school children as did reagan. i suppose it's only ok if repubs do it (shocker). - Kayce Maisel
I find it even more fantastic that parents don't think their kids can think for themselves. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Teaching our kids not to respect the President takes away that unity. If we don't agree, we should instead be sharing what we don't agree with, not removing the opportunity altogether. This is ridiculous! (note that I was saying the same thing to things the liberals were doing to Bush as well) - Jesse Stay
Jesse Stay- You hit the "nail on the head" so beautifully! - earl wallace
Complete idiots are people who think that their kids hearing a few words from ANYBODY are going to hold sway over the impact of their parents, their environment and ability to think freely. - suecosby
@tony i agree with you on most of the comment. the problem with the speech i had was the accompaning lessons, since removed from the d ept of educations website - Jonathan Jesse
You know, I just read the speech, and I don't see ANY political agenda in it, much less a liberal one. "And that's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself." Sounds pretty conservative to me. Read it here: http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009... - John Craft
For those on this thread who are freakin' paranoid about Obama pushing a political agenda on little children, here are his prepared remarks. http://www.whitehouse.gov/MediaRe... You can now STFU about it. You're welcome. :) - Helen Sventitsky
Jesse Stay - Amen! - Minu Nianda
Jonathan: the "offending" lesson was what could you do to help the President. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
@jesse i don't think anyone has said anything about teaching their children to disrespect the president, just that they don't agree w/ what he says - Jonathan Jesse
Let's all join hands and recite the pledge of allegiance. Come on. I know you want to. - Sean Montgomery from iPhone
Jonathan: I disagreed greatly with what Bush did but I still took my son to see him and meet with his Deputy Press Secretary. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Jonathan I see people flat out telling their kids they can't listen to the President. That sounds like disrespect to me. - Jesse Stay
Maybe school SHOULD be about learning where other people are coming from. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
It is up to parents after school to teach them their own values. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
In Arizona, kids have to get permission slips to listen to the President. That's disrespectful to me. - Jesse Stay
Jesse: it is worse than disrespectful. Where were theywhen Bush spoke to kids? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Jesse: yeah. Gotta have a permission slip to learn. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Let's see, how does it go? I pledge allegience to Robert Scoble...wait that's not it. - Sean Montgomery
Robert, you're absolutely right... but I can't help but wonder where the promises were from this administration on working across the aisle and having full transparency. I think this administration has provided the fanatical opposition with all the ammunition it needed to take situations like this and blow them up. Once again, I agree that all children should be able to hear the President speak without opposition. I just think this administration is blowing the PR front. - Douglas Karr
Robert I am giving you a fist bump for this man. Well said!!!!!!!! - Joe
@robert i think the heart of the problem is what you stated "Parents should teach values" and i don't think that is happening whether political, religious or moral and too many people are relying on the school system to do so. - Jonathan Jesse
Helen Sventitsky- I just read Obama's speech and I don't think I could have put it any better' I do not detect any undercurrents or subliminal manipulation. I heard the same advice when I graduated from high school. - earl wallace
"too many people are relying on the school system to do so." - and this is President Obama's fault how? Are you saying that, since the parents aren't doing their job of teaching values, no one should be allowed to talk to their kid about values? - John Craft
Robert - I'm a conservative but agree with your original point. POTUS should be able to speak to students. You have to acknowledge that if W. had tried to do the same thing (national satellite address) to students, liberals would've been just as outraged as many conservatives are now. - Paul Goldsmith
Paul: You're flat wrong. - Jeff Harbert
I think @Paul is correct, FWIW. - Kurt Starnes
Let's face it - there's a significant portion of this country's population that, if Obama gave a speech about puppies being cute, would launch into an apoplectic rage randomly spewing the words 'liberal' and 'socialist. - John Craft
Paul: you are wrong. Bush spoke to students and I don't remember anyone so angry. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Yeah...who is he to define cute. - Sean Montgomery
John Craft: lol - Minu Nianda
Really? Bush gave a national address to school kids? I honestly did not know that. - Paul Goldsmith
@robert, Bush 41 spoke to students in '91 and there was opposition from the Dems. - Kurt Starnes
Kurt: I will take your word on that. That is stupid too. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
This is an amazing opportunity. Until now it simply wasn't possible for a single President to speak to an *entire* nation of school kids. Until now it was only possible to do it in person on a school-by-school basis. When I was growing up it was an extreme privilege to have the President visit your school. We should be embracing that! I don't care if you agree with Politics or not. - Jesse Stay
Kurt: so, where will we be in eight years? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Kurt: will we have a better country where kids are encouraged to learn and think critically or are they going to learn that politics is like sports? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Double fist bump Robert. - Joe
There was opposition from Dems in '91, but there was no ranting and raving that Bush Sr was going to indoctrinate school kids. - Rene Wirtz
@Robert Watched a great documentary on text books and our kids are NOT encouraged to learn and think critically. They are misguided. That's one of the key downfalls with our education system... which is controlled by people trying to indoctrinate their own beliefs and avoid criticism from any extremes. - Douglas Karr
It's funny I've been so inured by the idiocy, venom & deception coming from the White House for the past 8 years I have a hard time even grokking there are people who don't view the new guy as a massive breath of transparent, humanistic fresh air. And also that a US president talking to our kids could be a bad thing. Altho the guys in this thread who disagree may not be idiots, generously I would at least characterize them as "Fox-addled". - Thom Kennon
@Robert - I'm with you on those thoughts re kids learning to think critically. I may not agree with Obama on many things, but I would encourage my Daughter (almost 11 y.o.) to listen to any of his speeches. I do think there is some hypocrisy on this school speech issue, though. FWIW. - Kurt Starnes
Just for the record, I think it's awesome that the President has the opportunity for a national address to students. Great opportunity for the President and children alike. - Douglas Karr
1991: "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students," the New York Times quoted House Majority Leader Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.). "And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.'" Decent article on the history of these school speeches here: http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs... - Kurt Starnes
@Thom transparent? Like the close-door, one-sided bills that have been rammed through? Stop watching Fox OR MSNBC. Start reading http://factcheck.org/ - Douglas Karr
BTW, I wasn't following the Bush 41 school speech in '91, but would think the opposition to Obama is very likely much more heated than it was for Bush 41. - Kurt Starnes
Kurt: OK. So where will we be in eight years? Will your guy speak to school kids? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
@Robert - I don't have a guy or a party that represents me (See Jesse's sentiments). :-\ In an ideal world, Presidents would speak to kids apolitically and all parents would support such speeches. And I would ride off into the rainbow on my white unicorn. - Kurt Starnes
@Kurt @Robert Everyone should have the right to speak and be heard... what are we teaching our children through censorship of our very own President? Regardless of whether or not his speech is political, it should not be fought. He is OUR President and OUR childrens' President. PS: Robert... don't you mean in 3 1/2 years? ;) - Douglas Karr
I just had to laugh at the person who said Obama was transparent. Wow. Don't read much do you? Obama just made sure 8 months of Presidential White House visits will remain secret. How about those meetings with drug companies, huh? - Spencer
@Douglas - I generally agree with you. But, just as Obama has the right to give the speech, folks have the right not to listen, even though I think all should listen. Some conservatives seem to have missed the point that neither schools nor the WH require *mandatory* viewing! Folks still have a choice and this, to me, makes all of the protestations seem so silly. - Kurt Starnes
Scoble++ I wish I could fave this post. - Tanath
@Kurt we agree... and I also don't fall for the rainbows and unicorns. - Douglas Karr
In fairness, I think the ONLY real objections were over the slip that the president wanted children to tell him how they were going to help him. Most people don't like the idea of indoctrinating children. They didn't want their child coming home to harass them about why healthcare reform wouldn't pass, etc. This might be a paranoid nutter fear, but for all the political manipulation many parents are used to via their children. My children are constantly bringing home political notes about taxes, funding. - Jason Nunnelley
This whole debate is sorta silly. If you don't want your children indoctrinated, then listen what the man has to say then give them your opinion -- teach them the value of free speech which is to let all ideas out into the world and let the good ones stand. Taking your kid to the White House to se a President you hate? Makes perfect sense to me. - Dean Rodgers
Wait a second don't we spend years indoctrinating our kids on everything from how to eat properly to what sports team to follow? I guess it's just other people's indoctrination we don't want them exposed to? ;) - Eoghann Irving
Eoghann Irving, duh. :) - Jason Nunnelley
Eoghann, // I AM NOT COMPARING THE PRESIDENT TO THE KKK // But, how would you feel about your child attending a meeting where they taught that certain races were immoral, corrupt or otherwise less worthy. Sure, you could just explain that the bigot they listened to was wrong. But, children are impressionable. That's exactly why we work to brainwash... ahem, excuse me, train them young about things like pollution, recycling, civic responsibilities, etc. It's why schools have them to recite the pledge. - Jason Nunnelley
For the record, I'm looking forward to my children listening to the president. It will make for good dinner conversation. - Jason Nunnelley
My point is that sending someone to school and then complaining because they might be "indoctrinated" is a ludicrous position. Of course they will be indoctrinated. That's why we're sending them there! The objections to Obama's speech that I have seen are entirely party political and not motivated by any real concern for social or moral damage. - Eoghann Irving
Jason, FWIW I did attend a meeting that told me exactly that when I was about 11 at a local baptist church. There was a book and tape burning afterward. My mother was mortified when she came to pick me and my sister (9) up. Neither my sister nor I was 'impressionable' enough to take what we were told at face value, and we had a very lengthy conversation with my mom about what we thought... more... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Jason: you hit on something crucial. There's a lot of white folk (especially here in the South) that do not want the president to talk to school kids, because it may just empower black kids. - Rene Wirtz
Eoghann Irving, well sorry. I reserve the right to choose what indoctrination I subject my children to and I don't much care whether others think I'm backward or ignorant for reserving that right as a parent. I consider one's refusal to exercise that right cowardly. Even allowing my child to attend public school, and attend the Obama presentation is a decision that is mine to make. I won't whine or complain. I'll take physical action to stop people from doing anything to my child I don't like. - Jason Nunnelley
Tina, I can't defend the position taken by a minority of paranoid parents that their children shouldn't be exposed to the president's presentation. But, I do defend their right to be notified and that decision belongs to the parent. I think withholding your child's attendance is a poor decision. But, I think the suggestion that parents don't have the right to direct their children's education and experiences in childhood is unacceptable in a "free" society. I determine who trains my child, nobody else. - Jason Nunnelley
Jason Nunelley, I'm curious where you think I said that you didn't have the right to raise your children any way you see fit. Or that it was ignorant or backward to reserve that right. I don't think I made either statement. My point remains that this isn't about any real concern for the welfare of the children. It's a politically motivated stunt. - Eoghann Irving
Eoghann Irving, you said "sending someone to school and then complaining because they might be 'indoctrinated' is a ludicrous position." That statement indicated to me that you think taking action to limit said indoctrination is likewise ludicrous. The rest of my statement wasn't aimed at you personally or your comments but more the generic conversation. There are lots of people openly calling concerned parents racist and stupid for even suggesting that the curriculum shouldn't be political. - Jason Nunnelley
What I'm trying (and perhaps failing) to argue is for people to give the real reason they are pulling their children from school. It's not because they're "being indoctrinated" which is a vague phrase that has negative connotations which makes it hard to argue against. It's because of something specific. And the reason they're not giving a clear reason is that it isn't really about the... more... - Eoghann Irving
Rene Wirtz, this is a major disconnect between reality and perception. People who don't like Obama's tactics aren't all racists. They're not fearful that black children will see his example and obtain an education, get a better job, etc. They're fearful that Obama's policies will usher in big Orwellian government. I'm hopeful that Obama will inspire black students. But, I don't want his legislation to pass. I'm also southern, but that doesn't mean I'm a bigot. - Jason Nunnelley
jason totally onboard with your statement, though i know it will get me some less than lovely responses. i definitely do not want Obama's policies to to become embedded because I think they are the wrong ones, not because I want to see him personally fail. I think the best chance for the country to succeed is if his policies sputter - Zachary Adam Cohen
Eoghann Irving, I agree with you. The Republican "protect the children" spin is disgusting. But, I disagree with you on this idea that none of the parents are sincere. A significant number of parents don't like having their children used as pawns. I tire of it in my redneck, backwoods southern town (so you can all assume it's because I'm a racist :). My local school pulls this crap... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Though I consider the reaction these parents have to be bad. I respect a parent's right to opt out of a political stunt. Do I consider the firestorm the Republicans are fanning a political stunt? Of course. But, I don't automatically assume the parents are insincere, or racists. My kids are enjoying logical discussions on why some of the president's desires are noble and some are less so. - Jason Nunnelley
@Jason: I wasn't calling you a bigot, far from it. But I can see and hear from my relatives there is a deep seeded mistrust. And it is doubly so, because Obama is black and because he is a "socialist", two things that are not very popular amongst the mostly Republican voter base. I do want him to go a progressive course, but to call Obama's political course socialist is laughable at best. - Rene Wirtz
Rene Wirtz, I knew you weren't calling me a bigot. It's the southern comment I'm chastising. Since we're both in the south, I think we should be careful not to further feed this idea that southern people are bigots. It's just not true, at least no more so that Californians or New Yorkers. If J.C. Watts had run and won the presidency, these same relatives would love him. It's not a fear... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I think we need a "back to school" czar. - Spencer
I straight up asked my daughter what she wanted to do and her response was "I'd rather do something else". But how about this - I respect the president's right as president to address children in the public school system, why can't MY right to not have my 7 year old daughter listen to it regardless of message be respected? - Michael Koby
@Michael - Good point. - Kurt Starnes

It might be more worthwhile to have Al Franken teach them how to draw a map of the United States. - SuezanneC Baskerville
does anybody think that, independent of what obama is going to talk about, it's not the president's job to address the nation's kids and this is not appropriate for thim to do in a free country? http://masstrovato.tumblr.com/post... - masstrovato
How do you get from people being upset with a lesson that insructs children to write an essay on how they can help spread the President's message to them being racist? - Robert Hafer from iPhone
Scott, (answering q1) Bill Ayers, though people may argue Obama didn't actually associate with him. Jeremiah Wright, though people will argue Obama attended church for twenty years and didn't fully understand the lessons Mr. Wright preached. Obama's nominee for Green Czar, Van Jones, though I realize people will claim that nominating someone to a cabinet position doesn't mean they agree politically. - Jason Nunnelley
Scott, I sincerely appreciated Mr. Wright's willingness to be honest about his message. While Obama tried to pretend he didn't understand that message, or that the preacher didn't mean what he said, Mr. Wright had the courage to say that Obama had no choice but to disassociate himself from that message but that he stood by his statements. I don't like Mr. Wright's message, but respect that he has the guts to say it and stand by it. - Jason Nunnelley
Scott (answering Q2) Originally, the president intended to ask students to participate in an exercise to describe how they would help the president. I view this as relatively innocent, but some do not. That has been changed in reaction to public response. Now, though I find it innocent, I don't like it. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news... - Jason Nunnelley
Scott, I don't have a problem with his present version. But, pretending people are reacting to the version out now and ignoring the history that brought this controversy to most people's attention ignores the true motivations. I'm just suggesting you should consider the reality that your link isn't the source of the controversy. - Jason Nunnelley
I think kids in all 57 states should have the opportunity to hear him speak if their parents don't object. - motownmutt
I had forgotten what Bush was doing that day. That is a great point. If I remember correctly, wasn't the book he was reading to the kids upside down? Or is that an urban myth? - Mike Kirkeberg
Agreed. Robert. Kids today are more evironmentally concious, know whats right and wrong and better perspectives of life, bring on anypne who wants to talk to them, there is no guarantee that they will listen as they are independent :) - Shashi Bellamkonda
The reaction to Obama's original plan is not in a vacuum. The movement to recruit children and young adults into new nationalist organizations concerns some people. It's not so much right-ring Republican types, but more the anti-government types. Pretending this is a flame alone in a desert isn't intellectually honest. http://www.youtube.com/watch... http://www.youtube.com/watch... << The rhetoric that spikes the concern. - Jason Nunnelley
Your son sounds like a genius. You sound like a liberal elitist. Sometimes liberals are so annoying. Sigh. - practicehacker
Thanks for the links, Jason. I knew some Norwegians who I believe served one year mandatory military service. I thought it served them well. - motownmutt
This administration is serious about engaging young people in quasi-military service. Its cabinet members talked about it openly during the campaign. You can pretend that didn't have an emotional impact, but that's just hiding your eyes to reality. That rhetoric set the stage for the sensitivity you see today over something as innocent as the president encouraging students, even to... more... - Jason Nunnelley

Jason Nunnelley, Seems that just further backs up my argument that this is a politically motivated and cultivated hysteria. Doesn't surprise me that it's been tried before. - Eoghann Irving
Eoghann Irving, I live in a bedroom community in rural Alabama. We're a 70% Republican community. I've not heard a single parent complain about the presentation - not one. The only thing I've heard is reports that the original message contained a curious question from the president to the students, and the president (being much better a man than his political activist supporters) removed it to avoid the conflict. There is no [widespread] fear about Obama's presentation to students. - Jason Nunnelley
Eoghann Irving, this idea that there's widespread panic over the president addressing students is akin to Sarah Palin claiming David Letterman joked about someone raping her daughter. It's a stunt. But, that's different from the hand full of people that have legitimate concerns about this administration's "statist" tendencies. What is at stake here is not the fact that the President wanted to speak to the kids--that is good. The issue was that it was framed as how we can help the President (hint, hint--his agenda)--and that my liberal friends is what the commotion is about. SB Settings rocks, but I wish there was a VPN toggle. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF

There might actually be a VPN toggle, but I know nothing about the site mentioned in comment 47 here: http://thebigboss.org/2009... - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF

I'd put a GDGT widget on my site, but I don't want to advertise the stuff I own. Any other widgets coming? - Dave Friedel
What would you want another widget to show? Also, do you really feel insecure? It's not like it's broadcasting your address. - Veronica
gdgt could make a killing by partnering with insurance companies. - aldenoneil
Why are OSes on there? -_- They're not gadgets. Or are they? I must be missing something. Don't want to add the entire collection of MS Windows. Feel oddly ashamed. XD - John Wang
With people getting robbed by talking about going on vacation on Facebook, yes I feel insecure about putting an inventory of pricey items out there. It would be nice to be able to populate the badge with stuff I pick though. - Dave Friedel
Of course, I may be a little paranoid having grown up in NY and having my stuff stolen on several occasions. And addresses can be found pretty easily, even if they're not publicized. - Dave Friedel
Dave - Put up a list of old, cheap, and useless items instead. - John Wang
Well, I already have listed things on GDGT. I guess a widget on my home page (which is my name) is a bit too direct information. So I guess I'm not paranoid about it, I just don't want to make it too easy. Like "Check out DaveFriedel.com, this guy lists all the stuff he owns. We're in Providence, let's find his address in the city tax records". It's a little more worrisome on my own personal site than GDGT itself. - Dave Friedel
I going put products made by Goldstar on my widget so I don't get robbed. - Fee501st from iPhone
@John Wang - Regarding operating systems, check out this discussion on gdgt about our decision. We think they're relevant to the gadget world and and it's the sole exception for software on our site: http://discuss.gdgt.com/gdgt... - Dave Schumaker
Thanks Dave. Just thought it was odd since all of the Wacom Tablets got deleted hours after I added them to my "Have" or "Want" list. - John Wang
Yeah, we don't really have a category that properly supports Wacom tablets right now. We'd like to bring this online at some point in the future. A lot of people try to submit them to our mice category, but that doesn't really work and we won't approve them. We're working on bringing many more gadget categories online in the future though. - Dave Schumaker

There has recently been a new addition to the gadget websites. You might think there are enough gadget blogs and news sites already, but that is also exactly what the creators of gdgt thought. That is why they haven’t started a regular gadget news site, but more of a social network news site. They call [...]
