Thomas Hawk, are you jealous yet? The bloggers embark on the USS Nimitz. Photos. Tons of them:
Many more to come. By the way, the Navy wants to do another trip with social media people. My first recommendation to them? Thomas Hawk. He'd do a lot better than I did. Of course he'd have to drag along a 600 mm F4.0 lens (big ass lens) to get closer than I did. More photos coming in a few minutes (and some videos too). - Robert Scoble from Bookmarklet
Sorry for the duplication, I messed up. Heheh. Thanks Louis for the like twice. - Robert Scoble
Ready to enlist? - Andrew Leyden
Robert - How heavy is that huge lens? - Susan Beebe
People laughed when I brought my 600 mm F4.0 lens (I rented it) on board. They aren't laughing anymore. - Robert Scoble
Susan: heavy. And I hauled it up a TON of stairs. - Robert Scoble
I am so jealous you have no idea! - Loic Le Meur
Andrew: I almost went into the Marines for six years as a photographer. - Robert Scoble
Loic: you should go on the next trip. It's unbelieveable. It's like Davos but muliplied by 100x. - Robert Scoble
Wow, it looks really impressive. What about the water? How do you protect it from harmful sea salt water? - Susan Beebe
Loic: there's nothing like being 10 feet from an F-18 being catapulted off. Wait until you see the video. - Robert Scoble
Susan: the water is 40 feed beneath the deck. I never even tasted salt. I see more salt in Half Moon Bay. What you have to worry about is hitting lenses when walking up the stairs and jet wash. - Robert Scoble
On the trip was a former F-18 pilot too, so he helped a lot in our understanding. - Robert Scoble
Robert - unfortunately you'll never get to see the F-14 at night, which was always something amazing. If possible, get close to an EA-6B on the Cat, it will rattle your teeth and you'll feel it in your gut (I worked on the flightdeck for 10 years as part of the COD crew). - Vince DeGeorge
Stairwells are steep and narrow. My brother was a Navy Seal on that ship stationed in SD. Very cool rig! He was a medical rescue diver - jumped down out of helicopters to soldiers injured at sea and brought them back up for transport - Susan Beebe
Get Thomas Hawk on there asap! :) - Susan Beebe
Vince: I think we saw one of those, but we saw so many planes land and take off that I lost track. I'm back in the hotel. It was one of those experiences that very few people get to have and it totally changed my life. More on how later. It was a great thing to do just after Memorial Day. - Robert Scoble
Pavan: out of all the experiences I've had, this is the one that sticks in my mind as the most interesting. Both because it was extraordinarily cool, but also because it is a huge responsibility. I was the eyes and ears for a huge number of tax payers, and seeing how their (my) money is being spent is interesting and a large responsibility. - Robert Scoble
I can tell you - working on the flight deck, the excitement was ALWAYS there... I never got used to it. Of course, it's not exactly somewhere you want to feel comfortable. For any who haven't seen it, go here: http://www.pbs.org/weta... and watch Carrier. It appears they have the full episodes. Memories... now I'm ready to go back in!!! - Vince DeGeorge
Robert, also remember, that most of that responsibility falls on kids barely out of high school. The military builds character and trains you like no other corporation in the world. A modern day manager with a $3 mil budget? Ha, how about an 18 year old kid that is responsible for a $30 mil dollar aircraft and the lives of those inside? - Vince DeGeorge
Yes I'm jealous. Why was I not invited??? LOL Awesome you got to Robert. Truly fantastic! - Sheryl
Those are some stellar shots you got Robert. - Jason Hansen
This was a PR event put on by the Navy I take it? - David Lloyd
Show the world what a modern service it is now and how they are all up on blogging and stuff for recruitment? :p - David Lloyd
jealous yes, looks great - Kim Landwehr
Vince: the sailors I talked to didn't like the PBS special. They said they only put on disgruntled employees. Mark: yes, they fly VIPs, bloggers, journalists onto the carrier for these embarks so that they can get the word out about what the carrier is like. Pavan: thanks, I'm still uploading. - Robert Scoble
WOW. I can't wait to see the video. - Schneider Mike
Robert, I agree - they didn't exactly put on the best sailors, but it did give VERY GOOD insight to what carrier life is like. You have to see through some of the drama (though, believe me - there IS that drama in the Navy). I don't know, I may have a different skew on things. I wasn't what was called "Boat Chuck" - I was aviation, which is a little different world - even further, I was CODs, making it even more so. - Vince DeGeorge
The video will be up after dinner. I got more than 100 photos up to look at in the meantime. - Robert Scoble
Robert awesome pix. what lenses did u bring? 70-200 IS, wide angle, 600 mm, can u give us a list of what u used? easier than going into "more properties" on Flickr for a ton of photos - Elliott Ng
I had a 16-35 F2.8 L Series, a 70-200 F2.8 L Series, and a 600 mm F4.0 L Series. I also had a 50 F1.4 for the night stuff. - Robert Scoble
check out this thread i just started on friendfeed.. we're up to 150 comments now! http://ff.im/3pYjK - Jason Pollock

I enjoy listening and watching Leo, Dvorack, etc. when it comes to technology discussions. The more I see the higher echelon of FF and Twitter talk about politics, the more I wish there was a filter I could apply. I mean, this was just a funny picture that gives Obama supporters another means to look down on people who do not support Obama, but I've seen Dvorack's outrageous blog post about Palin's children, and I've read Scoble's mistatements regarding Huckabee's speech at the convention. - ComicList

The democrats' signs were much slicker. With every speaker at the DNC they passed out new ones -- there were hillary ones, biden ones, michelle etc. all beautifully printed on nice sanded sticks. Not a hand painted sign in the crowd, all the perfectly the same, and no chance for a misspelling. Good stagecraft. The hand painted signs make me cringe from a design/spell check pov, but they are authentic. - Oldengrey (Jay)
What is this? The Republican Friendfeeders coming in to comment swiftboat style? Lighten up for Christ's sake! Obviously you've yet to discover what a sense of humour is. Let me know when you find one and I'll teach you how to install it. - Mark O'Neill
Geez, Mark, maybe you could lighten up a little. The Republicans were commenting on the headline, which was perhaps uncharitable and directed at them. I think Leo is great, and I think Dvorak has no problem taking care of himself. They are completely entitled to their opinions outside the world of tech. That's why I subscribe to them. We live in a great country, don't we? - Oldengrey (Jay)
Misspelling and bad grammar goes across the board, even at MoveOn (http://skitch.com/chilima...). I've been known to make a mistake once in a while my self. I know, shocking. Maybe that will be the next big tech idea. Electronic campaign posters with built in spell checker. - ChiliMac

Mark, from Wikipedia: "Swiftboating is American political jargon that is used as a strong pejorative description of some kind of attack that the speaker considers unfair or untrue—for example, an ad hominem attack or a smear campaign. Most accurately, it refers to the repudiation of a politician's personal history by people who were present as that history was made." Does the speaker (Leo) consider my comment to be untrue? - ComicList

Wednesday's DNC theme "Securing America's Future" also happens to be the name of Wes Clark's PAC. Coincidence??

Someone could make a lot of money running a veep pool. Clark's a dark horse, but I'd put $20 on him. Doesn't steal a Dem from the Senate. And he's seems to enjoy (or at least play) the attack role well. His military cred trumps McCain's, too. - Kawika Holbrook

Chevy Volt Already has Waiting List | Gear Live
You'd think we'd get more electric cars since there is waiting lists for this, SMARTS, even Teslas (for a fee even!). Come on, car makers, people *want* them. Just keep making doucheless cars and it will happen, seriously. - Eric Rice from Bookmarklet
A good VC investment is in a startup that does conversions. I'd offer up REZZING as a test vehicle. - Eric Rice
@Eric - just follow Andy Grove. Converting the fleet is exactly what he is getting behind http://www.greencarcongress.com/2008.... If you are interested in electric, also check out http://www.betterplace.com. They propose to move the entire infrastructure from localized to centralized power plants with the battery as the mechanism for delivery. - tagami

it only get 40 miles per charge? wtf? how is it going to take them 2 more years just to put out 10 year old technology? - Ňicķ
oh oh oh... I think I just ejaculated. 40 miles per charge is fine for the day to day. most of fuel is not used for long road trips - Noah David Simon
Eric Rice... I'm not sure conversion will be a feasible alternative. am I wrong? I hope u r right because if you can convert back and forth... that would be best. use the petrol for the long trips and switch into a hybrid mode. oh the options could be endless. why not on top of all this a few solar panels... or wind conversion? it is a damn moving object! there are so many options where fuel could be saved! Even after we weed off petrol. honestly I still see uses for black gold though for trucks - Noah David Simon
It always seems like the thing we want now is this perpetual 2 years away. Just please, give us the OPTION to struggle with figuring out how to charge. Shit, my Segway gets 24 miles per charge and I can deal with that. But if I want to get something better (in a nice form factor) it's from one extreme to the other. So we hack or we wait. - Eric Rice
Plug-ins scare me a little, especially with such a small range. What happens if you misjudge, use too much AC, go uphill too much, etc... and find yourself out of juice? People complain about their iPhone's running out of charge cause they can't carry an extra battery. What happens when their *car* runs out of charge? - felix
Nisan and other Japanese automobile manufacturers are ready to bring out electric powered cars by 2010 as well as Chinese car makers. Please read my Newsvine article about electric powered cars http://igorthetroll.newsvine.com/_news... - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
hey Felix... get ready to get jumped! old fashioned like ;-p ...as for the options they are exciting and I think it is a reality that we are entering into. It is very exciting! I think what we as friendfeeders should do is start to educate ourselves on how these things work. One of the problems with todays cars is the grease monkeys can't play anymore and the cars have specialists for every bolt. It is exciting that America is leading the innovation here and is inspiring other countries to keep up.... - Noah David Simon
it is very important to keep focused on the next step... and that next step is in education. the population needs to know how these things work. If the population is informed of the nuts and bolts of how these machines work then they can't be lied to by salesmen trying to sell a "people's" machine for more then it should be worth on repairs. We need to keep informed on all schematics. - Noah David Simon
example of automobile scams today is year old cars are selling for a few thousand dollars and yet yearly insurance is the value of the cars we are driving... I mean WTF!? We need to make sure we aren't told by the car people that because our cars are electric that they are more disposable. - Noah David Simon
Heh I think our work flow with a car differs from a communication device. Jason: Well I'm LA-friendly and yeah well, I recognize that both norcal and socal have the same level of pretentiousness, but one is more in denial than the other. The other wears it like a BADGE OF HONOR. :) I think Valley people are the worst because we ain't so hive-individualistic like SF... we have that social hybrid thing going on. :P - Eric Rice
I alreeady had a car that ould go back and forth between gas and CNG. It was fine. Any ybrid is fine for the bridge to plug in cars with longer battery life. - Francine Hardaway
The interesting part is that "Chevron oil" holds the patent for the lithium batteries that where used in The Toyota RAV4 EV manufactured from 2001! Around 2005 they withdrew the patent license from Toyota preventing the manufacturing of an affordable electric powered car. http://igorthetroll.newsvine.com/_news... - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
In America GM took a huge risk by not going hybrid and instead going pure electric. I don't buy that theory at all Igor because the profit margin on an electric battery that they were sole patent owner of would of been more profitable for an oil company then the oil itself. Chevron makes one ninth of what our government makes off of taxes on petroleum. My real suspicions as to who would be hurt fiscally by dropping petroleum lie with the Democrats. - Noah David Simon
The fact is the "Green" movement has become the "Greed" movement and we need to make sure Chavez, Obama and Pilosi do not get into power. A close to free market is the real "Green". When oil is hard to get then we will have alternatives... we already know oil is hard to get... so the market is demanding otherwise. I'm not going to be fooled by the BLUE STATE TYRANNY anymore. Gore has investments in big oil as well. These people running our Senate want 2 turn America into a self hating "Green Ghetto" - Noah David Simon
Noah I am just quoting the facts! So why Chevron took the lithium battery off the market? - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
could be many reasons. Government pressure? OPEC and Saudi pressure? - Noah David Simon
The Saudis don't pay our government shit! Chevron has to lick their balls. - Noah David Simon
but Chevron itself is like a Jew working for a bunch of Cossocks during a pogrom - Noah David Simon
Haha! You hit the nail square on its head! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Let's just blame it all on @aManDaChapel "she" is the root of all evil. lmao - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
co-signing onto "doucheless cars." - @baratunde
Eric, my dad has a collection of old Street Rodder magazines, and theirs an awesome article from like 69 I remember reading on converting a VW Bug to electric. - Clay Newton
I don't think you understand what I am saying. Chevron is powerless. They can't even make decisions that they profit off of for fear of immediate price punishment. The oil companies have their hands tied and they want out of this business more then we do. They can't move out of oil fast enough to be able to survive without petrol. OPEC could easily go to Chevron and say hey boys we decided to sell the petrol to the Chinese government for twice the price. - Noah David Simon
like I have said in the past. if you want oil company PR... then turn on PBS. that is who supports public media. they don't want the Iraq war because it was bad for their business. They would of made more money selling Iraqi oil to France or Russia for twice the price... an American market is a disaster for Chevron. That is why Obama --> Europe and OPEC are in conspiracy. - Noah David Simon
and here we are trying to tax our oil and make it too expensive for the consumer,... we been bamboozled.... but not by Bush. Bush got fucked by oil back in 2000 when he was informed the prices would go up. We got screwed because the Democrats are the oil money! - Noah David Simon
Yeah. It pisses me off that we have to "look forward" to a new electric car. One. Why cant we just walk in and, you know, buy them? From multiple car manufacturers? Arg. - Andru Edwards
so who wants to make me a big shell that i can wear while on my segway so i can fake people out? lol - Eric Rice
Eric I'm going to hit your Segway with my bike. - Noah David Simon
I did the math and a person spending $40,000 would get a return with four and a half years. by 2013 there will be legitimate competitors and by 2016 there will be conversion in my estimates... old cars might be still of use because chances people won't use them much next decade... so the conversion thing will be soon - Noah David Simon
Noah, I drive a Segway, a bike and a 4x4, BRING IT ;) - Eric Rice
Conversions FTW. I don't want some sorta of space egg, I want my current car converted. Make it so. - Mo Kargas

@Roberto I haven't seen anything do mail + calendar + group scheduling better than exchange. Pico: in Apple's case its secrecy keeps it from really testing out a ton of different scenarios. My brother-in-law worked at Apple and he said he couldn't even tell his coworkers what he was working on. So, there is a culture internally which keeps them from testing stuff out with a huge number of people. I think that's why buggy junk gets into their products. Safari on my iPhone keeps crashing, too. Opening up some screens on the iPhone takes six seconds, and my battery often drains just sitting there. - Robert Scoble

They Say: Autism is Linked to Watching TV - http://www.babble.com/CS...
Interesting that TV watching might be having an effect on kids in early life. - Robert Scoble
This study is total BS. Read the comments after the article. - Michael Tefft
I agree with Michael. This is a fascinating article if only that it highlights how easily we're willing to accept conclusions drawn from poor reasoning. Autism is an incredibly complex disease (which I have studied a fair bit and hope to conduct research on) and many types of children are partial to watching television at a young age. Think of all the personality types that would lead one to want to watch tv and we quickly realize that this relationship is just that-- a relationship. Let 'em watch tv :) - Derick Valadao

TV has a huge effect on children and brain development. Not forgetting to mention behavior. However, autism is not linked to watching TV There is tons better research out on this topic.. - Katybeth

God this is insanely bad science. As stated, correlation does not equal causation. What else started in the 80s? Hummm, hey, personal computers is the cause of autism! Cordless phones is the cause of autism. John Hughes films are a cause of autism. Anyone with a cursory knowledge of autism knows that it long went unreported and that the higher incidence is, in part, a product of better diagnosis and reporting. Report=RED SHIRT. - AJ Kohn
In time this will be more accepted as the correlations become more and m ore clear over the years. Next up, the affect of video games on children -- worse than autism, eh? - Prokofy Neva
