I don't think I'd leave Google Search any time soon. I was a Lycos holdout for a long time (it wasn't even that good, anyway), but it'd take a lot to beat Google feature- and performance-wise...
- Tyson Key
I wouldn't necessarily switch 'in a heartbeat' but if another engine comes along that's proven to be better than Google, I'd use it.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Honestly, I don't know how something could be better than Google. Of course, that was said about Yahoo! or Altavista, etc. I use Google because it gives the results I need.
- Curtis Jackson
@Akiva I think Google was very clever to integrate Search into all their products because it means (at least for me) that its not just about Search anymore. Its not a 1-1 question.
- Roger Kondrat
@Tyson @Alan I think you both have a point, its 'unlikely' but as I said above when it happens it had better be dramatic like Google was to Yahoo because there are lots of benefits to being a Google user.
- Roger Kondrat
The thing is, like with most services, it can't just be better. It has to be 10x as good to get the mass 'in a heart beat' switch. Also, I have just got my mum to stop using MSN search (the default on her computer) and she loves Google now.
- Johnny Worthington
@JW agreed. Not sure about 10x but definitely 'substantially' better to the eye of the beholder. M$ has recently stated they are going to release just that this spring. We shall see what the future brings I guess.
- Roger Kondrat
if something better is found. i'll switch. until then I'm 100% Google!
- Alex
Roger - I thing most people are still 'creatures of habit' overall. It would take a lot of buzz (and ongoing chatter) to change 'Google It' .... at least for now.
- Charlie Anzman
The main reason I use Google is the advanced seach feature and speed of adding results. That is the only reason.
- Nation Hahn
Search is a commodity, at least to me. True commodities are substitutes for each other, so yeah, I'd switch if the opportunity arose.
- Tom Landini
If theres something better. I'd move. Everyone else would too it happened with AltaVista it could happen to Google too.
- Nicholas James
google is great but when i really need to 'search' i use clusty or kosmix. clusty because it has better filter and kosmix because its better semantically and make 'guides' out of my query! try it!
- cysko
I came for Search, I stayed for Mail/Talk, Search History, Maps, Sites, Analytics and Code...
- Tyson Key
I'm with Tom: it's a commodity. On top of that, Google's too big -- so it doesn't have to be BETTER, just AS GOOD. I'd definitely switch to an equal competitor.
