Hilarious - may all come to pass before 2018.
- Todd McKinney
Love it. But 2018? I'd except to be able to get Friend.com directly through the HUD in my flying car by then... Only silversurfers (like us) would still use "web browsers" in 2018.
- Tony Ruscoe
Twitter feed not available? That may come to pass at 10:30.
- Bill Bittner
And what's up with "low karma comments"? I thought the karma thing left us in the seventies... but yes, everything comes on cycles...
- Alex von Halem
You've got the Google thing backwards :)
- Paul Buchheit
Hey, I just noticed I'm in the screenshot. :D @Paul: ? What's backwards, where?
- Voyagerfan5761
Actually, it missed one important thing - a HUGE ad, taking up the top half of the screen, for a substance that is just as effective as Viagra (which was banned in 2011).
- Ontario Emperor
I think Paul's saying that in 2018 ff will own google
- j1m
It's comforting that hitting monkeys will still be as popular in 2018 as they are now.
- Ginger Makela Riker
One thing they got wrong: by 2012, Paul will have started his own country southwest of Alaska on an artificial island. It'll be called Free Festivusland, and it'll get the top-level domain “ff”. FriendFeed will then be http://ff/ — no dots or coms or nets or orgs.
- Amit Patel
I think the web will be voice and audio driven in 10 years, or at least it will be available. There's even some startup now that can sense nerve pulses to the vocal chords to know what you'll say before you actually say it.
- Mike Reynolds
I think comments won't be replaced by nested commented, just like @ in twitter, many people like this.
- terababy
Mike Reynolds, now I'm scared. Very scared. I'll get myself in trouble before I actually hear what I'm saying (rather than after).
- Ontario Emperor
For some reason, the Facebook deal makes this future user interface look more likely.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Ok, not just me seeing that. Nice job Kevin.
- Andrew Smith
Oh my. It's official, I'm old. Eeeeeniwayyyy... Glad to know it wasn't my mind going when I rolled over the logo.
- Andy Kruger
This has to be FriendFeed's best logo yet!
- Nicholas James
Wow! That is neat! I LOVE creative people! :-)
- Pat Graham Block
A very cool logo! Keep up the creative work!
- Sanne Buurma
Very cool logo you guys! :) Like Nicholas said, best and most creative one yet!

How about change the color of entire background next time?

Gosh - ten years have passe me by - no one told me where to run . . .

Chris: those are Japanese characters, but yeah, I thought the original matrix logo had numbers, but might be wrong.

The film used a combination of hiragana, numbers, Latin characters and some reversed characters. I opted to just go with hiragana for a specific reason... (Matrix screenshot here: http://thefuturebuzz.com/pics...)

My 9-year old son has been asking to watch this with me and I really need to make the time for us to do that. This is one of my favorite movies of all time (and he is one of my favorite persons)
- Alan Cheslow
What a great movie. Always think about it when I get deja vu :)! Love the logo.
- Ruth Helfinstein
I can't believe it has been that long!
- Gary Stiehr
@Gary, I know! I was in high school when the first one came out.
- Brandon Mendelson
The coolest and I would have missed it if Jeremiah Owyang never made a post about the Best of Day content (I found it in the BoD), which included a filter from FFing Enigma (aka Tina) and finally brought this post to my attention. The lengths I will go to for good content!
- Michael Fidler
It's just an XML feed I put on my server as I didn't figure out how else to get animations playing right on Friendfeed! Whenever I uploaded an animated GIF as a message here it wouldn't autoplay. Now when I want to include an animation I can just paste it in the XML. Not sure if there's an easier way...
- Philipp Lenssen
So your animated gif is now a series of individually-linked single frames?
- ianf ⌘
No, the animated gif is indeed just an animated gif... Friendfeed does allow such animated gifs when included as a feed item thumbnail...
- Philipp Lenssen
Frames are little fast, a little slow would have been much better
- Rohit Srivastwa
(I should disclaim that so far, none of the animations presented in the animations feed are done by me! It's only stuff I found on the web that I thought was interesting.)
- Philipp Lenssen
@Erica: Well, Matt's certainly one of the top 10 best known Googlers. It is odd, but for good or for bad he's become one of the more notable faces.

I like Heroes... it was one of the few good series on the "big 3" last year.
- Lindsay
I like it too. Looking forward to watching it tomorrow night.
- imabonehead
I liked it, but I was unhappy with last season and didn't mind that it was seriously abbreviated by the writers' strike. I'm waffling about watching it tomorrow.
- Nine
I really enjoyed the first season but agree with the others that season 2 was somewhat of a let down. Still looking forward to tomorrow's epi.

Akiva's just joking, of course he loves good TV like Lost and Heroes. He's just in a mood or something.
- Josh Haley
I'm always in a mood. (And I don't like Heroes or Lost.)
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'm actually looking forward to the weekend ending so that it is time for the premier on Monday!
- Walt Ruppar
I'm a Heroes fan.....looking forward to the show starting again.
- Colide81 (James)
I hear this season's gonna be way better. I'm willing to give it a chance, can't wait to see it on Tuesday morning (i have no cable)
- Nate True
Looking forward to it tomorrow evening :)
- AJ Batac
I am, I am! :D So happy the show is back!
- Daynah
It's the only TV show I used to watch when it was playing... Looking forward to the new season!
- Vincent X
I started watching Heroes because back then there was no good TV shows on, and then got hooked into it due to the mystery and suspense.
- imabonehead
OK. I admit to watching way too much TV... but I am a Heroes fan and agree that last season was seriously disappointing. However, the Season 3 premiere episode is (supposedly) back up to Season 1 standards.
- David Muir
Yep, love it, though don't know when it's next on here :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
Love it! Last season wasn't the best, but I'm eagerly awaiting the season premiere tonight.
- Cheryl Jones
The premiere was pretty good. A few nice reveals and twists to start off the season in an intriguing way, but there were some characters who were acting stupidly. I'll be watching this season, definitely.

The photographer, Joe Pugliese, has a great website: http://www.joepug.com/ In fact it's so great I haven't got round to reading the Wired article yet
- Adewale Oshineye
Enjoyable read except for this completely bizarre paragraph -- "Not long after that, Brin and Page came by to check in on the furtive beginnings of their browser. "I remember sitting at my desk, which at the time had a stuffed snake running along the back of it," says Pam Greene, an engineer on the team. "Sergey was bouncing on one of those exercise balls, watching Darin give a demo, and petting the snake."
- Osi
"The snake, called Mr. Bigglesworth, seemed to purr softly in Sergey's lap, providing a calming influence during the demo. However, when one of the tabs crashed, taking the browser with it, Sergey's voice took a more strident turn. "I have gathered here before me the world's best developers," Sergey began, "and yet each of you has failed to kill Internet Explorer. That makes me angry. And when Sergey gets angry, Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset. And when Mr. Bigglesworth gets upset, people die!"
- Karim
Sergey then pressed a nearby console button that retracted Darin's chair into the floor below. A flash of flame could be seen as the screaming developer vanished from the conference room.
- Karim
Somebody help me!" Darin pleads. "I'm alive, only very badly burned!" This proves to be very distracting, and after being interrupted several times, Sergey picks up his phone, and reports the situation to a henchman. "I'll go deal with it," he assures Sergey. "If someone opens the retrieval hatch, I can get out," Darin explains. At this point, the hatch opens. Darin is at first grateful, but then a gunshot is heard.
- Capn' One Eye - adrift
After a pause, Sergey is satisfied Darin is dead and attempts to continue explaining his plan, only be interrupted by Darin again, who says indignantly "you shot me! You shot me right in the arm! Why did you-". Darin sentence is cut short by a second gunshot, which proves to be the end for him, as the hatch is heard to close. (http://www.moviedeaths.com/austin_...)

Google’s Chrome is aimed at Windows, not IE This is no longer about browser but about the an entire marketplace spread between desktop, mobile and web. With Chrome, Google’s taking a shot at Windows, not paltry Internet Explorer I’ve covered this in more detail on my blog http://sachendra.wordpress.com/2008...
- Sachendra
The point of Chrome is the same point one would make about the iPhone. Will iPhone outsell Nokia worlwide in total number of phones sold? Not a chance in hell! Has it changed the face of mobile phones forever...absolutely. This is where I think Chrome is a fantastic concept. By open sourcing D8 Google has literally empowered every other browser including Safari and Firefox to be Windows...

I haven't been able to find many details about the V8 design, but it's apparently a straight JIT (no interpreter) with inline caching of property accessors. I didn't see anything about HotSpot/TraceMonkey-style optimizing compilation, and it doesn't seem to use any intermediate language. (http://code.google.com/apis...) Is this the future of dynamic language runtimes? Am I a nerd?
- Jim Norris
Nice to see Wired putting out a great article in a timely manner for a change - rather than spend page upon page talking about minor internet celebs and how they gatecrashed gawker media parties to build their fame.
- Jonathan Beckett
Jim, tracemonkey should still be faster. Paul friendfeeded an article comparing them. I should say that tracemonkey will still be faster eventually, unless V8 adds hotspot-like tracing as well, in which case, my money would ride on V8, since Google probably has half of the hotspot team :)
- Sanjeev Singh
I LOVE application icons. Chrome + Gmail is what I've wanted for years.
- Bradley McSpinn
I love FriendFeed since I get to vicariously hear about Chrome, here...
- Mona Nomura
I just don't get it. Why are people freaking out about the unification of search and URLs? Hasn't Firefox done this forever? And Opera, too? The first thing I do in any fresh install of Firefox or Opera is get rid of the extraneous search bar.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva for some reason I never did that. This is the first browser that forced the issue.
- Robert Scoble
OK, I'd like Gmail Redesigned skin back, and also Remeber The Milk Gmail plug in.. I make real use of RTM, and it's good to have it in the mail. Beats MS Bloatware anytime, and it's in the cloud too :0
- Ian May
But, Akiva, this is GOOGLE doing it. Now stop resisting, you know that "resistance is futile". (where have I heard that before...?) ;-)
- Sprague D
my firefox only has one box for searching and urls. when i want to do a search i type "g" first if it's on google, or "a" if it's on amazon, etc.
- Ranjit Mathoda
Robert, interesting! I just assume that all geeks look for customization options within 10 minutes of installing an app. Perhaps that's one reason why I am very reluctant to embrace Apple: they don't allow me to customize.
- Akiva Moskovitz
browsing from chrome now... it's amazing.
- Brandon
apart for some of the UI which is innovative, chrome best part resides in its core (multi threading, multi process) and the V8 javascript VM. The webkit rendering engine is already used by safari. We can only hope that potential rendering bugs will be solved quickly. And as they are using the same engine on Android they will certainly provide some simple way to sync everything between a desktop and a mobile platform (history, bookmarks...).
- Olivier
Hmm, Chrome almost runs a little too fast on bomomo.com :)
- Philipp Lenssen
Is it just me, or does the "Show best of: day - week" placing look a little messed up.
- Michael Forian
I think it has to do with the size of the screen? I have a 19" monitor and when my chrome is maximized (or wide enough at any rate) the "show best of" is in the far right column. as you reduce the width of the screen, the "show best of" can move into the text box area.
- Justin Long
Akiva, IE since at least IE4 or 5, you can search in your toolbar.
- Admiral Anika
Sigh, just went to FF in Safari (all webkit, right? w3c standards, right?) well FF renders fine on safari, but as evidenced above chrome doesn't get it quite right... which puts me back in my, sigh, another browser to support and billions more (aggregate) out the window to support it frame of mind, i think that will be close to 10 configurations my company's QA team now has to support testing for... though a browsing dream this is my development/testing nightmare
- James Ostheimer
I only use firefix's "awesome bar." love it. Can't wait to try google.
- Andrew Warner
I don't get application icons. What so great about them? I can make Gmail look like a separate application, but isn't it more convenient to have it just in one tab inside browser?.Now, when I want to look at something in the Internet while reading gmail, I would need to start another browser. Or I am just missing something obvious...
- Peter
@Peter, for something like Google Documents which can even work offline thanks to gears, application icons make sense.
- Rahul Das
@Rahul : application icons are just a shortcut to chrome without location bar & buttons. and they are like .url file which are native on windows or shortcuts to a website in Program group. So what is the point with app icons ? Gears ? they built it for other browsers too
- Olivier
I think the app icons are a nice touch because they pick up what the site is in a pictorial way. I don't have to pause to read anything, I can just point and click on my desktop.
- Justin Long
I don't see this here, maybe they had fixed that already

They talked about this on an episode of QI (it's a British panel/trivia show). I didn't know they'd actually *made* one...

Very interesting. Hope they post the download link soon so that we can all play with it.
- Brady Brim-DeForest
It seems as if the main problem with most people in the examples shown is their forehead is too short or too narrow. Wonder if there's a subtle clue that big brains are beautiful there! :)
- Lindsay
@Jason - that's an interesting concept. Would you be more likely to trust the girl on the left or right? Would you be more likely to talk to either one of them at a party (or more intimidated by either one?).
- Lindsay
Notice that for all the women they soften the jaw, while squaring it for men. Everyone also gets a slightly thinner face and upturned almost smiling lips.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@SB yeah and the forehead adjustment... almost like there is a triangle with the forehead at the point and they flip it so the chin is the bottom of the triangle... weird.
- Lindsay
They are different women! Blame Paul! : )
- Erhan Erdogan
Lindsay: whenever sketching generic faces, the face starts as an inverted triangle and the eyes appear a third of the way down from the top of the forehead; lips and nose appear below and above (respectively) a line 1/3 up from the chin. Looks like these pictures are rearranged to meet that particular school of drawing.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
That is interesting yet odd. Seems that the faces are slendered with the software.

The artist proportions were laid out by the Greeks as the perfect human, that's not being used here. This beautification engine, I think, builds on top of a previous study where some students tried to mathematically identify attractiveness. They had participants rate the attractiveness of head shots from yearbooks. What they found was there was a high correlation b/w the geometrically "average" face and high attraction. That "average" is based on the proportions of the di

stances between the individual elements of the face and their relative sizes. IIRC the software adjusts elements so they statistically/geometrically complement each other. It's not actually working toward a golden set of proportions, but a set of proportions appropriate for the individual as defined by the masses. I wouldn't think of it as "facial discrimination" so much as "deviation from ones potential".
