What techniques are you using? - Dr Alan Cann
This is wonderful, thank you for this :) - Jaspreet Seehra
Electrophoresis, (there are some great videos on how to pour, run and load your gel) Ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration, lots of centrifuging, lots of making up buffers and a little bit of cell culture. I've also been helping the technician with calibrating pipettes and other little jobs. I was really nervous about being in the lab but I'm loving every minute so far. I found... more... - Roisin Thomas
Hi Jaz. Did you enjoy your first day? I'm so jealous that you get a swipe card. The lady in MSB wouldn't let me have one because she said I need to be supervised at all times. I felt about 2 inches tall (which to be fair is not far wrong) ;) - Roisin Thomas
Oh no! That's not fair! You still need to use the bridge to get to the HW building! Yeah, it was good, very long and am now very very tired. It was mainly watching things and making notes today, so was a bit dry on the practical side, but still really good :) all of Tim Harrison's lectures are now clicking into place :). Hahaha, you and me both! - Jaspreet Seehra

You're welcome. :) - Roisin Thomas
Having no learning objectives or past papers for a module makes it really difficult to focus revision.
I agree! - Joshua Bower
I am definitely getting worried about this exam.. I don't know what to expect :-s - Jasper Estranero
This is the first time BS2058 has run so there ARE no past papers. Dr Wells has put example Section A and Section B&C type questions on the Blackboard site for the module (Course Documents > BS2058 Assessments > Example Exam Questions - Dr Chris Willmott
I don't find the sample questions useful. There aren't enough. I know there are no past papers which is why learning objectives would make such a difference. I have worked through all the past papers for BS2014 and we had really good learning objectives for MB2050. My marks for those will be higher than I get for BS2058 as a result. I just wish we had the same level of support as we get for other modules. - Roisin Thomas
Sample questions are available for #BS1009, as for other courses. We do not make complete short-answer past papers available. - Dr Alan Cann
I got my 1st choice of 3rd year project! Working on The role of centrosomes in cell division and human cancer. Fab supervisor too. Yay!!!
I got my first choice, too :) Will be investigating the pharmacological profile of Kv currents of arterial smooth muscle cells - Joshua Bower
That's great! Really pleased for you. I really didn't think I'd get my first choice so I'm on cloud nine at the moment! - Roisin Thomas

Thanks. I’ll be trying to identify the ligands for Collectin Kidney 1 protein. It’s a complement protein that’s coded for by a gene that is associated with a disease called 3MC syndrome. I'm so pleased. The lab experience should help with my 3rd year project. :) - Roisin Thomas
Does anyone know what time the biochemistry office closes? If I get my BS2058 report finished I might hand it in today to save me some petrol.
I'm not sure but I think it might be 2pm? - Laura

Do we need to choose 3 modules per semester for 3rd year or is it 2 and our 3rd year project counts as one? It doesn't say in the handbook. - Roisin Thomas
That's for Medical Biochemistry by the way. - Roisin Thomas
Its 2 modules each term - if you look the green sheet in the selection boxes the projects are automatically ticked :) - Laura
Everyone does 4 modules in total in Yr3 (plus your project). 2 modules per semester. @Roisin for MB you have MB3001 as a core module in semester 1 and can choose 1 more that semester and 2 in semester 2 - Dr Chris Willmott
Phew! That's a relief. I've been given the wrong green form so it's probably easier to understand if you have that. - Roisin Thomas
#MyDiary 5.3.11
Time is flying too fast. Having a bit of a tough time recently with my son so keeping up with everything is hard. Luckily I started the BS2014 essay early or I would have been in big trouble this weekend. I just need to edit and make sure my references are all in order. Have struggled a bit with a couple of topics this semester. I find enzyme kinetics and electrophysiology really difficult to get my head around. Tutorials have been really useful though and I've managed to get some really helpful books from the library and the second hand bookshop. Hoping things settle down soon because March is full of deadlines for me and I can't afford to ask for extensions. I don't want anything to cut into revision time over easter. On a brighter note, I saw my first daffodil today. Spring is on its way! - Roisin Thomas
#MyDiary 4.2.11
It’s been a really good week so far. I love being back at uni. I had a test on protein structure and amino acids that went really well on Tuesday. I managed to get a stack of books for my modules from the library before they all went which will save me some cash and help with tutorial work. I managed to find time for a haircut so I can now see through my fringe. I’ve been doing some research for an upcoming essay, which I’m really enjoying for once because it’s not last minute. This means I can afford to get sidetracked when I find other interesting stuff along the way and it’s also easier to take the info in when I’m not stressed. I was introduced to Refworks today, which is just the best thing since sliced bread and we were shown how to do really refined literature searches which is going to be a great time saver. I also finished my application for funding for my summer research project. I’m really, really looking forward to it. My supervisor said I could do it even if we don’t get funding and is letting me start it after the summer exams to minimize childcare costs. Happy Friday everyone. :-) - Roisin Thomas
#MyDiary 28.1.2011
The beginning of this week was spent revising for my last exam. I think it went well. I used a mind mapping app that I recently downloaded to make sure I could follow all of the pathways I needed to remember. It was a good test to see if I really understood them and it helped me find some areas that I was weak on. I spent a large part of yesterday catching up on lost sleep and housework and today I've packed away semester one course materials so I have space for this semester's stuff. I've been in contact with my project supervisor for the summer project and I have to start work on my part of the application for funding. I might need a reference from my tutor but I haven't met him yet because I switched degree streams so I'm not sure what to do about that. I might see if my previous tutor can do one instead. I have a test on protein structure next Thursday so I need to revise for that but I promised my daughter I wouldn't work this weekend (before I knew about the test) so next week... more... - Roisin Thomas
I'd definitely ask your former tutor for a reference as the new one won't know you. - Dr Alan Cann
Thanks. I never really had any particular problems so only saw her to get results and discuss changing courses. So she doesn't really know me either. I think I'll have to make sure I make more of an impact on my new tutor as it occurs to me that I don't want my final reference to be based purely on my results. I'm not quite sure how to go about that though. - Roisin Thomas

It actually went really well so maybe there is something in it. :-) - Roisin Thomas
Good luck with the exam today! #BS1015
I'm a slave to my revision timetable.
I didn't manage to get all of the work I had planned done today so I am staying up to finish it. I have a table with each lecture on and I get to colour the cell in once I've revised the lecture. I have certain cells allocated to certain days and I can't rest until I've coloured in all the cells. I reckon I am either going to end up getting a first or losing my sanity. - Roisin Thomas
I think I've already lost my sanity, either that, or I never had any in the first place. It sounds like a bit of a plan brewing there :). I'm just the same, I can't rest until those cells have a lovely pink colour to them :D. x - Jaspreet Seehra
I can't find any learning outcomes/objectives for #BS2053 Metabolic regulation on blackboard. I usually use them during revision to check I've met the aims of the course. Were we given them on a handout or anything?
Christine Well's lectures usually have a summary of the vital things at the end - I can't remember if they did this time, but last year I used those as a revision guide. Alternatively, try emailing? - Alice Merrill
I used those last year too but they aren't on the slides this year. I just checked the module survey and it asks if the module objectives were made clear so I'm assuming that there are some somewhere. I'll have another check to make sure I haven't missed them, at some point, and email if I can find them. - Roisin Thomas
Dr C Wells (Lectures 1-7). Topics in lipid metabolism, to include lipids as an energy store, lipid transport, regulation of cholesterol metabolism and atherosclerosis, regulation of fatty acid mobilization, normal and starved metabolic responses. Diabetes. Dr P Moody (Lectures 8-10). Aspects of amino acid synthesis and degradation. Dr M Leyland (Lectures 11-14). The central importance... more... - Jaspreet Seehra
I found these on the module handout, I know they aren't very specific, but it's what I've been using. Hope it helps! xx - Jaspreet Seehra
Thanks Jaspreet. - Roisin Thomas

Anyone know where I can get a toy bow and arrow? I'm not up to wandering around looking from shop to shop and I've tried toys r us. - Roisin Thomas
Amazon :-) - Rachel Bell
I need to make sure I get it before christmas. My son only asked for two things from Santa and this was one of them. I was hoping someone here might have been to a fancy dress as Robin Hood or something and might know where I could get one in Leicester. If I can't get one at least I'll know where to go though. Thanks. - Roisin Thomas
have you tried dominoes in Leicester? Give them a call, they have pretty much everything! - Dr Jo Badge
I hadn't tried dominoes and got one from there in the end. Thanks. - Roisin Thomas
Shocked and stunned. Maths is the area I've struggled most with since coming to uni but I've got 91% for my BS2057 report that was all calculations.
It just shows how far I've come since last year. My mum won't believe it! - Roisin Thomas
congratulations! you seem like a hard worker though so im sure you deserved it. lol about your mum not believing it! - Maryam
Good job!! - Joshua Bower
Families, eh? My wife doesn't believe I wrote a maths textbook :-) - Dr Alan Cann
I have that book. It must be good. :-) - Roisin Thomas
Not enjoying the workload at the moment. 5 pieces of work due in the same week is not fun.
Sucks :( - Lyndsey Wright
This is always a problem. We try to give students as long as possible after all the taught material to submit coursework. If we do it earlier there are complaints that some things have not been covered. - Dr Alan Cann from iPhone
Yeah I can see the logic in that. I was just having a bit of a panic because both of my kids were sent home ill today. I'll get there though. 3 down 2 to go now so it's not looking quite so daunting! - Roisin Thomas
How are they? Don't worry about the presentation today, you were great :) - Lyndsey Wright
Aww thanks Lyndsey. You were too. You looked so comfortable up there! I had to put my hands in my pocket at one point to hide the shaking! I was very confident in my mind but my body didn't get the message. One kid not too bad, just a medium temp, but the little one went up to 40 degrees earlier. The medicine is bringing it down though. Thank God for Calpol! (Actually..thank science!) - Roisin Thomas
Starting to get quite stressed about missing uni now. Conditions are still really bad here and it's very unlikely that my son's school will be open tomorrow. That will be the third day I will be missing. Is there a form I need to fill out after 3 days or something?
There's something that you'd need to do regarding absences. It's on blackboard under the BioSciences Office Link. Just in case you are not in for the lecture, I will be recording that as well. He went really fast today and I wasn't able to properly keep up.. :-S - Jasper Estranero
If you go onto BB, then Biological Sciences School Office and then on the left hand side there is a tab that says "Sickness/Absence". Might be worth having a look at that- I guess you are covered by the extenuating circumstances report (coursework and teaching) section :) Is there anything I can do to help you? Do you need notes or anything from people? - Lyndsey Wright
Thanks Lyndsey I'll have a look. I managed to type and email the tutorial work that I had to and in this morning so at least I won't get marks knocked off for that. The main thing that would help is recordings of the lectures. Jasper has done the 2 that I've missed so far but I don't know if he takes Metabolic regulation and I feel bad asking him again. If you know anyone who could record that and the physiology one tomorrow that would really help. If not then notes would be great too. - Roisin Thomas
Don't think Jasper takes it so I'll ask around to see if anyone else does for you :) I'll see what I can do :) - Lyndsey Wright
You're a star. Thank you! - Roisin Thomas
Panic over. His school is open! - Roisin Thomas
If you've told your personal tutor you should be OK, although you will of course have to catch up on any work you've missed. - Dr Alan Cann
If you ever need it again, I can help with either one of those modules, I make meticulous notes :). - Jaspreet Seehra
Thanks Jaspreet. I hope I won't have to take you up on that but it's great to know that the offer is there. (And I imagine your notes are awesome!) - Roisin Thomas
They are... trust me! She is a note machine! - Lyndsey Wright
Is there anyone going to the #BS2057 Molecular Cell Biology lecture today who could record it for me?
My sons school is closed and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get someone to look after him or even if I can get in myself as my village is covered in sheet ice. I've never missed a lecture and I'm worried I'll miss something I'll need in the exam. I'll email Prof Fry for permission to record if someone can do it. - Roisin Thomas
Not 'liking' just bumping in hope that someone can help - Dr Jo Badge from iPod
I can ask Ibi for you, she usually records stuff :) - Laura
If you dont get anywhere (there's not many second years on here now unfortuantely) I can send an email round to see if anyone has recorded it and get them to give you a copy? Otherwise, you can borrow my notes if you need them, I usually make a fair few lol. Hope your okay x - Lyndsey Wright
That's great thank you everyone. - Roisin Thomas
Science is about embracing your knockers – Bad Science - http://www.badscience.net/2010...
"People often ask if there are short cuts in spotting nonsense. In reality, it’s not easy to do in a checklist, because there are so many elaborate ways to distort evidence, but for me there is one very clear risk factor. The entirety of science is built on transparency, giving your evidence, and engaging with legitimate criticism. If you hear of a company refusing to hand over the evidence they say supports their claims, whether they are a drug company or some dismal cosmetics firm, all you know is that you are being deprived of information, and that vital parts of the picture are missing. If you hear someone is threatening to sue their critics, again, all you know is that people will be intimidated from raising legitimate concerns, and again, you are being deprived of information." - Roisin Thomas from Bookmarklet
Loved the #BS2013 practical on adding drugs to a piece of guinea-pig illeum today.
Felt like a scientist from an old horror film what with all glass and tubes and bubbles in the organ bath. Only the dry ice was missing. Had to resist the urge to shout "It's alive!" every time the illeum contracted. ;) - Roisin Thomas

"the study suggests that you can’t understand an animal’s evolution simply by considering the evolutionary pressures that act on its genome. You also have to consider the genes of the bacteria and other passengers that live inside it, which also create variations in its behaviour and affect is chances of survival. Sharon calls this the hologenome – the combined genes of a host and all the microbes it contains." Fascinating stuff.
