"It’s painful enough when he rolls the dice, announces that a drunken orc has unspooled some Valentine’s guts for sport. Worse are the silly accidents. One Valentine tripped on a floor plank and cracked his head on a mead bucket. He died of trauma in the stable. “Take it!” the Dungeon Master said that time. Spit sprayed over the top of his laminated screen. “Eat your fate,” he said. “Your thread just got the snippo!”"

Recently I was reading a blog by the name ‘Blog of Holding’ and read this post. In summary he thinks that every book has roleplaying ideas in it, just waiting to be unlocked. I think this is an excellent idea, so I am going to go over some of the books I have done this summer. As a warning each one of these posts will have spoilers in it, though I will try not to give away too much.First up: Worlds of the Imperium by Keith Laumer.

RPG/D&D types: I'm running an old-school D&D game this weekend using the Swords & Wizardry "retroclone" rules and the original D&D module "B1: In Search of the Unknown." Please give me some weird-ass shit to throw at the players. (Marianne, please hide this thread!)
The module has a complete backstory, maps, and room descriptions but it's up to me to populate the dungeon with monsters, treasures, and perhaps traps or other features. I have much of it planned out, but would love ideas for cool objects, monsters, or other features.
- Steele Lawman
Josh, me too. I had the Holmes Basic Set (as I have learned to call it) and scanned my copy of the module that came in the box that my parents got me for Christmas back in 1980 or whatever.
- Steele Lawman
It's for first-level characters, so think "weird" over deadly. Like kobolds pulling a rickshaw for sentient giant rat, or a sword that shatters on first use to reveal it has a creamy chocolate center.

I bow to your use of a term with only 7 Google results ;)

Oh, I might have to sneak a roper in there.

C suggested the dungeon classics: rust monsters & carrion crawlers, also thinks that a gel cube is obligatory. Which reminds me, interesting trap he set up once: a gelatinous cube at the bottom of a pit. My character did a Errol Flynn move and swung down on a rope to grab the character who fell in.

Something else that came up while we were plotting a new adventure last night: using the Geoduck (mascot of the Evergreen State College!) as the basis for a monster. C was thinking about using a monstrous slug as a starting point.

OK, adding the carrion crawler and the gelatinous cube, as wandering monsters if nothing else. Oooh, how about kobolds riding rust monsters into battle?

I'm thinking how much Skippy sounds like Mr. 8 in these posts! Reminds me of his haunted house plans when the kids stayed with us during your vacation last year.
- Mama Lawson
You are right--I should totally ask Mr. 8 for ideas.

mega-nerd threadjack: why did you decided to go with S&W? we've been looking at alternatives to 3.5, something more streamlined. I have an allergy to THAC0 calculation, which keeps me from looking at earlier editions, but C has hate for skills tracking.

The retro clones all seem rather similar. I had also looked at Basic Fantasy RPG http://www.basicfantasy.org/main... and I frankly forget why S&W won out. S&W has ascending armor class rules, so you can add a bonus to your roll and compare to opponent's AC, so not THAC0. No skills. Basically, it's pretty darn close to the Basic or Original D&D rules, just re-written to be a bit clearer (and, of course, available to download or buy).

’ve been working on an adventure but it is taking longer then I thought. I’m mostly done the statblocks & body of the adventure but still need to write up the finale and locations for when the players inevitable break into places. However it has been a month since my last update and well, that one was pretty light to say the least. So here is a preview: The Haunter of the Ring is the main threat in the finale, so I’d like some feedback on him. He is stated out from the Call of Cthulhu, which is about 90% compatible with BRP. If you are familiar with either of those systems let me know. The description is intentionally vague since I figure players imaginations are stronger then my writing, though if you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them.

[Lets read] Dragon magazine: The strategic review 7: April 1976: "We also get our first estimation of proper advancement time. According to Gary, it should take about a year of weekly gaming to get to name level, and then characters should gain around 2-3 levels a year after that, so overall, getting to 20th level should take around 4-5 years." - http://forum.rpg.net/showpos...
I was going to say how much I love this, but now I'm afraid that "Diana" is in blackface. Also, that led me to this kinda NSFW post: http://www.protozoic.com/2007... so now I think I might have to never use the internet ever again.

blackface is creepy, but otherwise fab photo. I too loved the cartoon when I was a little kid. (didn't play D&D 'til I was in my 20s)
