I had no idea they forced him to get chemically castrated after he admitted he was gay. Disgusting. I hope the government officially apologizes for killing one of the great minds of that generation.
- Bret Taylor

Pretty bad for the "good guys" in WWII, eh? Doubly sad that it (apparently) caused him to commit suicide. So we lost one of the greatest minds in computer science in his early 40s.
- Joel Webber
If the British government doesn't apologize for murdering Turing, they will be no better than the Nazi enemy that threw homosexuals into the gas chambers alongside the Jews and Gypsies. Wasn't he supposed to be on *our* side? The *Law* didn't think so...
- Dennis Jernberg
We're still not very nice to gays. Apologizing for the past makes a statement. Correcting the present makes a difference in people's lives. I hope we do both.
- Andrew Warner
from iPhone
The man was an absolute genius, its a pity he could not live further to expand our horizons of thinking. His abstract computing device called "Turing Machine" is for computer scientists what speed of light is for physicists, an ultimate limit of computation
- thequark
Andrew agree. This is sad. I hope we can "correct the present."
- Rick Cogley
They should apologize for throwing Oscar Wilde in the clink as well.
- Joel Webber
If we follow the line of reasoning where the current government must apologize for all previous governments then it eventually reaches the point of absurdity. Besides how meaningful is an apology on behalf of someone else?
- Adewale Oshineye
Ok, I was being a bit silly about Wilde (there are plenty of things the Victorians could apologize for). But Turing was abused by what could be argued to be the "current" government (or at least political system), and that we still think of as the "good guys" (for wont of a better term) in WWII. And it was only ~50 years ago.

"There are lots of uses of Twitter that smack of lame bandwagon-jumping. This definitely isn’t one – live commentaries for TV shows via Twitter."
- Martin Bryant
from Bookmarklet
i dislike having comments on the TV screen; I'd rather have these conversations spring up on the web, where I have more control over them.
- Poor Gamer
cable TV is a dying medium anyways, as proven to me by hulu.com
- Poor Gamer
it means more sophisticated tools 2 handle all those gabs around the web! I can't wait til a tab-pad comes around, then we can tab our comments easily. (Can we have a feature that ppl can tune off the comments?)
- polou/indigo_bow
I want to _watch TV_, not have tweets about it cluttering up the actual show.
- Andrew C
Andrew C - I think something like this works for repeats or as a 'red button' feature - not something to clutter up the main show.
- Martin Bryant
I remember Muchmusic running a continuous chyron of viewer text messages a while back, possibly for New Year's Eve. I thought that was a terrible idea too.
- Andrew C
from Android
I watched this and found the stacks of multiple tweets kind of annoying. Maybe if the tweets were broadcast via the SAP channel or something (and thereby able to be disabled by the user) I would be more accepting of this.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
And HOW EXACTLY would Twitter be more effective than FriendFeed or a chat room to hold such a large conversation about a program?
- Brad Williamson
poke a pinhole in one of those body caps and you've got a pinhole lens!

did you see the new canon 7d was announced last night? nothing wrong with nikon though! ;)
- Phil Thornton
Phil: I did see that. But I wanted to step up to full frame and I'm already used to Nikon. Both are great companies that make awesome cameras.
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin, you're going to love shooting full frame. It's why I picked up my 5D and haven't looked back. Enjoy!
- Derrick
Nothing terribly exotic. Just the 50 1.4 and 70-300 VR (for the occasional trip to the zoo)
- Benjamin Golub
yes full frame makes a huge difference. we are still shooting on the old 5d's, hopefully the new mark II's soon. maybe I should make a website and sell it to facebook ;)! <--jealous

Fun feature on the stories behind Apple and Microsoft's ad campaigns. "Apple’s ads put Microsoft in a bind. One of Madison Avenue’s rules is that a market leader never acknowledges a smaller competitor in its advertising. What’s more, if Microsoft responded with ads that backfired, it would look just like Mr. Hodgman’s character. Maybe it was better to grin and bear it."
- Bret Taylor

I think Microsoft can take huge advantage of the door Apple opened, but will they, who knows. The have taken baby steps, there is a whole runway ahead of them if they want to pursue, just flip the coin, how many presenatations have you witnessed where the Mac wasn't compatible, I'm talking 2009 here not 2005.
- Louis Moynihan
lol... maybe: “You are not so embarrassed to take your PC out of the bag on a plane anymore,” said Mr. Reilly at the ad agency. “It’s actually kind of cool that you do. I know this is working.”

"Several events as of late have cause many folks to celebrate a resurgence in blogs. The events of FriendFeed being purchased by Facebook and the demise of Tr.im (although it was resurected) have everyone questioning their trust in storing data on services controlled by others. Chris Saad shouts that Blogs are back. I recently chimed in on the need to maintain blogs and providng reminders of others who have deemed blogging dead and shown us the future of blogging. I completely agree with Louis Gray, Robert Scoble and many others that our blogs should always be our main hub but they also need to evolve with the changes that have transpired with the advent of Social Media services and the real time web..."

I am wagering that those lines will cross within the next few years. (I am typing this on a netbook.)
- Sean McBride
True I think these lines will cross even sooner like late next year
- polou/indigo_bow
You may be right, although the most popular form factor will perhaps expand a bit -- to say a 12" display or so, with quadruple the RAM. Netbooks can easily replace desktop PCs and laptops for most of the tasks most people need to perform with computers.

A study published today by eMarketer, more than half of social networking users have become a fan or follower of a brand online. Moreover, users are far more likely to say something positive about a brand than something negative. From the report: “52% of social network users had become a fan or follower of a company or brand, while 46% had said something good about a brand or company on a social networking Website—double the percentage who had said something negative (23%).”

#46 is Valentino Rossi, #1 in the world right now. #99 is Jorge Lorenzo, #2 in the world. I'm here to study innovators and these two are at the top of their game. The team behind them is doing interesting stuff with social media, too.
- Robert Scoble
It is a lot harder to shoot these than jet planes. The pictures don't do justice to just how fast these things are going. This is turn 1 at Indy, by the way.
- Robert Scoble
Envious much! Being able to see The Doctor at work. Amazing!
- Steve Farnworth
Thomas Hawk would be jealous. I snuck through another team's garage (with permission) then got kicked off the track after 20 minutes of shooting.
- Robert Scoble
These are practice runs, tomorrow the racing starts. We're doing a meetup at the track, by the way, at 1 p.m. -- if you are here, call me. 425-205-1921 will be fun. Another meetup is at 10 p.m. tomorrow night in downtown Indianapolis.
- Robert Scoble
These guys drive faster in the rain than I do in my car.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Are these shots are only a percentage of the resolution of the camera? I can only imagine the full detail of the shot. 1600x1067 resolution feels like it doesn't do them justice. Nice work.
- Luke Kilpatrick
Luke: yeah. The full things are over 5,000 pixels across. I'll put up full res ones on Flickr.
- Robert Scoble
Really nice work! What lens are you using?
- Bill Sanders
Joshua: thanks. You didn't see all my failures, though. This was the hardest shooting I've ever done. It's amazingly difficult to get good photos of things going so freaking fast with such a long telephoto. I have no idea how the camera people on TV do it (except they have huge tripods).
- Robert Scoble
Bill: a Canon 600 mm F4.0 with a Canon 5D MK II.
- Robert Scoble
<insert envy here> missed you last night at the panel btw...
- Bill Sanders
By the way, all these pictures are in the public domain. My gift to you. Bill: yeah, sorry I wasn't there. I heard I took some abuse from Guy Kawasaki, though. Tell him that Yamaha's are beating the Kawasakis here. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Jeff: NASCAR goes slow compared to these bikes. :-) But I would love to catch some NASCAR action someday.
- Robert Scoble
Thanks for the "social media compliment" Robert. We all share a big passion and are simply trying to share the best content we have.
- Marco Massarotto
@Robert ... ummm darlin' depends on what track they are on. Right now they can get up to 205 on a super speedway WITH a restrictor plate. (eg. Taladega & Daytona) Before the Restrictor plate was required... they would get speeds up to 220 mph. (Yes I am a HUGE NASCAR GEEK!!)
- The Catz Meow
So I guess the shots of me catching a wave was like shooting fish in a barrel compared to the speed of these shots. Looking forward to seeing the full res shots, I wonder if you can tell the type of screws used on the bikes :)
- Luke Kilpatrick
The Catz Meow: I was just yanking your chain. The MotoGP is running about 205mph too. These bikes are amazing. Especially when you consider the rain. Those tires are awesome. Yeah, Luke, shooting you was a bit easier.
- Robert Scoble
Marco: thanks for the access and being great hosts. I'll upload a lot more to my Flickr account shortly.
- Robert Scoble
But cars are huge compared to these bikes. Easier to get focus on a large target. Astonished that the 5D handles that well...
- Holger Eilhard
from iPod
Nice. I'll be out there tomorrow. May see you at a TweetUp
- Mike Nelson
Holger: I love my 5D. It's an amazing camera. By the way, these have NOT been altered in any way and are straight off of my camera. If I did a little bit of processing on them they would look even more amazing.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert Oh yes I am well aware of what these bikes can do... I did my Motorcycle mechanic apprenticeship for Vance and Hines Racing back in 86-87. I used to watch them at Laguna Seca when I was stationed at Fort Ord.
- The Catz Meow
Can you tell I really LOVE Speed and things that GO FAST?
- The Catz Meow
The Catz: yeah. And these things DO. I will shoot the turns tomorrow (on the back of the track the bikes go through a series of turns, which make a lot better pictures than just all-out speed).
- Robert Scoble
Robert: next up: some nice HD video maybe? :)
- Holger Eilhard
from iPod
It's very difficult to shoot video at the paddock, organization won't allow videocameras, so it's gonna be a tough time for Robert to share some video, but, you know... you never know, he's Scobleizer :-)
- Marco Massarotto
Holger: I will try to sneak in some video here and there, but Marco is right, video is hard to shoot on these tracks. Plus, I can't use the 600 mm and get video worth watching.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: How come you can't do video on the 600mm? Too much shake?
- Luke Kilpatrick
Beautiful photos of a great team. I think race photographer would be my dream job.
- Stephen Masiello
Stephen: I met the official photographer today and he wasn't willing to give up his media pass. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
Nice. I was there last year, soggy then too. Didn't have a 600. Use a slower shutter speed while panning for that blurred feeling of speed.
- Jeremy Tanner
Jeremy: yeah, I'll try that. First I just had to get used to capturing these things. How slow? I bet 125th of a second would do the trick.
- Robert Scoble
Guy only had a little fun at your expense. Something about not being sure that all those egos could fit on one panel - even with you missing. We'll get you back for another one soon. Enjoy the trip - looks like you are having a blast.
- Bill Sanders
Great lens choice for the conditions & targets.

You can share items that you find out on the web in Google Reader. In the blog, click the "Notes page" link and then click "Expanded" to find the bookmarklet and drag it up to your bookmarks bar.
- Matt Cutts
Jenna or Mihai, can you add the "Note in Reader" bookmarklet to the Goodies tab as well? It took me quite a bit of searching to find the bookmarklet.
- Matt Cutts
matt, it's been filed as a bug for a while. Guess we should just do it sometime soon. It's now (only recently) on all the viewer interruptions though.
- Jenna Bilotta
Yes. That would be really great. A cool addition would be if Google Calendar will be integrated. That would make the wave a real killer applet. I hope for a lot of cool Gadgets for integration in alot of services.

Web-savvy scientists gathered at the Science Online London conference in London on 22 August to explore how the Internet is changing the communication, practice and culture of science. Biochemist Cameron Neylon, of the University of Southampton, UK, was one of a few scientists at the conference who have been given pre-release access to Google Wave an online collaboration and communication tool announced with great fanfare on 27 May. Nature spoke to Neylon about how Google Wave could transform the way that scientists work. What is Google Wave, and how might scientists use it? It is a communication tool that is essentially e-mail crossed with an instant messenger. You can think of each 'wave' or e-mail thread as a flexible document, which allows collaborators to chat and edit the same version in real time. You can also easily drop rich media such as sound files, charts and videos into the document. So Google Wave could be used for collaborative authoring, to speed up writing papers and...

"We are excited to announce the limited beta of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), a secure and seamless bridge between your existing IT infrastructure and the AWS cloud. Amazon VPC enables you to connect your existing infrastructure to a set of isolated AWS compute resources via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection, and to extend your existing management capabilities such as security services, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems to include your AWS resources. Amazon VPC integrates today with Amazon EC2 compute resources, and we will integrate Amazon VPC with other AWS services in the future."

About Craigslist: "I do not believe we should criticize a company that operates like this. We should learn from it. Of all the Internet companies out there, the one that serves as the most iconic for our firm is craigslist, not Google. We dream of funding a company that can be worth a billion dollars with only 30 employees. We've never done it and I don't know if we ever will. But we are going to try again and again and again."
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
Isn't that kind of like saying they want everything for nothing? Or they want a grand slam with a tiny-tiny investment? And that they are going to keep trying for that over and over again? I understand the desire to learn from Craigslist but what exactly are they expecting to replicate? Timing?
- Hayes Haugen
Well, I just read the quote, not the whole post. And from that, I'll say that craigslist is the model company for a vc firm. High income, low cost, simple organizational structure. Who wouldn't want that?
- Zach Landes
I don't follow: "Only programmers, customer service reps, and accounting staff work at craigslist. There is no business development, no human resources, no sales. As a result, there are no meetings."
- Doug Beeferman
That Tuscan Whole Milk page has a particularly good collection of "Customers also bought" items, including fresh whole rabbit, uranium ore, and a Badonkadonk Land Cruiser / Tank

Really good talk. One thing I found odd was to try to switch between synonyms in a post: content is clearer and more understandable if you refer to the same thing the same way every time in a particular context. Is Google working to make synonym searching better to obviate the need to do that?
