Hello Beth & Scott! I joined to take notes and discuss topics with like-minded individuals. Beth, I enjoy your knowledge around non-profits, keep it rolling! - Amie Paxton
Hi Amie - welcome to the group! :) I'm the community mgr at Network Solutions in addition to some other projects - Connie Bensen
I am facilitating an online community on a wiki to create curriculum for nonprofits. Every week I've been reflecting on the process of working wikily,m along with some "critical friends" who ask me questions or share their reflections. Dave Cormier uses a policy called "This is an add to not a takeaway sort of wiki" It made me wonder about how you create a giving culture in a online community -- http://tinyurl.com/5rv6ar - perhaps this is more applicable to nonprofit, learning, and peer sharing communities. Do you have any thoughts? Got one response from Twitter .... http://twitter.com/pfanderson/... - Beth Kanter
Start by setting a good example (give a lot yourself) and by rewarding good behavior (keep a list of best contributors, praise good contributions etc.). But keep in mind that not everyone in a community is a creator, so plans to include those people as well with a different approach. - Alja Sulcic
“A topic for discussion: Is it possible to be a freelance community manager and/or web strategist? How do you think a job like this might (or might not) work?”
I am a freelance community manager/web strategist for WordFrame. The team and the partners we work with are all over the world. I believe in the power of internet. It does work. http://wordframe.com - Dimitar Vesselinov
@Dimitar: So you work for WordFrame as a freelance community manager? Do you work for them exclusively or do you have other clients for whom you do the same thing at the same time?
I guess my original point was to ask if it can work wherein someone is a community manager / web strategist for several different clients at once. Some bigger clients will need someone in this role full-time, but some clients might be small enough to pay someone to handle this part of their business on a once-a-week sort of basis instead of full-time. Does this make sense? - Greg Williams
I don't think I could/should work for Automattic/WordPress as well. - Dimitar Vesselinov
I've been freelance in this work since 1993 ... works for me - Beth Kanter
@Beth: Great! So does it work for you in more of a consulting role or... something else? How does it work for you? - Greg Williams
It's completely possible. I work off contracts and I'm always looking for smaller gigs. The main thing to be up front about with both yourself and clients is the priorities for each job. - Spencer Scott
I guess what I'm curious about is that situation where you have several "current" clients. How do you prioritise? - Greg Williams
