Surge in Natural Gas Has Utah Driving Cheaply
Tuesday at 6:31 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"The best deal on fuel in the country right now might be here in Utah, where people are waiting in lines to pay the equivalent of 87 cents a gallon. Demand is so strong at rush hour that fuel runs low, and some days people can pump only half a tank. Articles in this series are examining the ways in which the world is, and is not, moving toward a more energy efficient, environmentally benign future. It is not gasoline they are buying for their cars, but natural gas. By an odd confluence of public policy and private initiative, Utah has become the first state in the country to experience broad consumer interest in the idea of running cars on clean natural gas." - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet

"Cap and trade" is the rage today as a primary solution to global warming. But the European Union's struggle with this approach indicates it has an uncertain future. This is because global warming, at its core, is not a technology or policy problem. It is the greatest failure of thought in human history. - Dave Riddell via Bookmarklet

Global Warming Fail

"Text reads: I was watching inconvenient truth the other day and theres the bit where it shows the sea level rising really high and flooding most of the world. Well i live near the sea, and don’t want to drown, so i got to thinking. Maybe if we lower the sea level a bit, when the water level rises then it won’t rise high enough to flood. Anyway, heres the plan. Everyone who can should take a bucket of sea water and pour it down the sink. If lots of people put the effort in, we could lower the sea level substantially and create a better world for our children to live" - Dave Riddell via Bookmarklet

"In Sweden, 25% of all energy use is derived from biomass. In Linköping, Sweden’s fifth biggest city, all the buses and garbage trucks run on biogas. The also have a biogas powered train line and some private taxis run on biogas. Last year, the Swedish government converted more than 700,000 liters of ‘confiscated alcohol’ into biofuel, which otherwise are poured down the drain by the customs officials, as a standard procedure. “Amanda,” thought to be the world’s first biogas train, started chugging along the southeast coast of Sweden in 2005." - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet

Arctic sea ice drops to 2nd lowest level on record
August 27 at 11:25 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"More ominous signs Wednesday have scientists saying that a global warming "tipping point" in the Arctic seems to be happening before their eyes: Sea ice in the Arctic Ocean is at its second lowest level in about 30 years." - imabonehead via Bookmarklet
"The National Snow and Ice Data Center reported that sea ice in the Arctic now covers about 2.03 million square miles. The lowest point since satellite measurements began in 1979 was 1.65 million square miles set last September." - imabonehead
"On top of that, researchers were investigating "alarming" reports in the last few days of the release of methane from long frozen Arctic waters, possibly from the warming of the sea, said Greenpeace climate scientist Bill Hare, who was attending a climate conference in Ghana. Giant burps of methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas, is a long feared effect of warming in the Arctic that would accelerate warming even more, according to scientists. Overall, the picture of what's happening in the Arctic is getting worse, said Bob Corell, who headed a multinational scientific assessment of Arctic conditions a few years ago: "We're moving beyond a point of no return." - imabonehead

But at times, regional electric lines have been so congested that Maple Ridge has been forced to shut down even with a brisk wind blowing." - Shannon Jiménez

"If speed and environmental friendliness is what you’re looking for, then the Neil Saiki-designed all-electric motocross motorcycle is the vehicle you need to get your hands on. The developing process of the Zero X began five years ago. A by-product of Zero Motorcycles, this is an EV that weighs up to 140 pounds with the lithium-ion battery (40 pounds), 23-horsepower motor and is available for $7,450. Since electric motors produce torque, the Zero X powers instantly when you snap the throttle, like a light switch with an on/off button. Switch to high-speed mode and you get unregulated acceleration to about 57 mph. It can hit 30 mph in under two seconds and 57 in about twice. The bike has hydraulic disc brakes and has a fully adjustable suspension and can recharge in about two hours using any household socket." - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet

Cabbage Chair – Peel And Peel Till You Drop Dead On This Paper Chair

"Sitting on a piece of furniture made out of waste is the most fundamental green move. And Oki Sato of Nendo came up with the Cabbage Chair in response to Issey Miyake’s request to make furniture out of the pleated paper that is produced in mass amounts during the process of making pleated fabric, and usually abandoned as an unwanted by-product. Aptly named, it works like a cabbage only. You can keep peeling at its outer layers to find that perfectly shaped chair. The paper is wrapped into a cylinder and cut vertically halfway down one side so that the layers can be peeled back one at a time." - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
