Lowell celebrates Kerouac's 'The Dharma Bums'
October 3 at 9:38 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Lowell has long celebrated the life and achievements of its most accomplished son, the great Beat author Jack Kerouac. In fact, a walk around the city's downtown and mill areas reveals a number of memorials and remembrances of Kerouac. But each October, the city lays out a series of events as a true salute to the late Kerouac. This year, the Lowell Celebrates Kerouac organization will present "From the Merrimack to Desolation Peak," a citywide gala that will feature, films, tours, poetry and music." - Vincent X

"Check out the Midwest film premiere of On the Road Now: Artists and Writers Respond to Kerouac in the 21st Century, a reflection on the Kerouac beat legacy featuring Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Amiri Baraka, and others. Head conservator Jim Canary, curator of the scroll at Indiana University’s Lilly Library, will introduce the film and afterward, show images of the scroll’s own road trip across the world." - Vincent X

"June 26-September 21, 2008 - Schaefer and Gray Gallery - The IMA reunites two of the iconic members of the American anti-establishment "Beat Generation" of the 1950s, novelist Jack Kerouac and photographer Robert Frank. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the 120-foot-long original typescript for Kerouac’s 1957 cross-country odyssey, On the Road, owned by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. The manuscript, 84 feet of which is on display, is accompanied by 83 photographs taken by Robert Frank during his own two-year cross-country pilgrimage and published first in Europe in 1958 as Les Americains. The IMA borrowed the almost singular complete set of Frank’s photographs owned by the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts." - Vincent X

"Be inspired and immerse yourself in the world of one of America’s most original and iconic writers: Write in the historic cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote Dharma Bums and learned On the Road would be published. Stay in an historic art deco, period-furnished hotel. See the original Dharma Bums manuscript. Enjoy classic Kerouac spoken-word and jazz recordings. Participate in a public reading. Learn about one of the most prolific periods of Kerouac’s life from pop culture historian Bob Kealing, author of Kerouac in Florida: Where the Road Ends. Work and learn within the very walls where Jack Kerouac lived hand-to-mouth, plied his trade, and ultimately made literary history." - Vincent X

"Lowell's Image Theater hits the road this month -- appropriately enough with Kerouac's Last Call, the play that delves into the later days of Jack Kerouac, Lowell's greatest road warrior. The company brings Patrick Fenton's play to Boston Playwrights Theatre July 17-26. It's the latest stage in the play's development, which started with a workshop at Lowell National Historical Park last year when Kerouac's On the Road scroll was in Lowell, then continued with four sold-out shows at the Old Court in February." - Vincent X

Oooh, very nice, I'd love to read your book! Hey, you should check out self-publishing/print-on-demand sites like lulu.com, you could relatively easily publish a professional-looking book, and even get it in online stores like Amazon and Barnes and Noble for a low fee. Keep us updated! - Vincent X
Really - you think I should self-publish? I have a LOT more editing to do, but I will let you know what happens. Would prefer someone else to publish it for me (obviously) but I'm also committed to the idea of it existing somewhere in the public consciousness. - Jen
Well, it was just a suggestion. If you could come up with a manuscript and find a publisher, that'd definitely be awesome! - Vincent X

"Jack Kerouac's classic novel, On The Road, turns 50 this year. This semi-autobiographical account of Kerouac's crazy, hedonistic travels across America has inspired countless hipsters and restless souls to "hit the road". To mark this auspicious birthday, Kerouac-devotee Russell Brand embarks on his own coast-to-coast adventure in homage to his literary hero." - Vincent X
Just finished watching it. Wow. Surprisingly good, and with a depth to it that I wasn't expecting. And the video quality is great, quite high resolution! I recommend watching it, great stuff. - Vincent X
