Firm evidence that Facebook makes you fat | Technically Incorrect - CNET News
2 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
"The world is swelling and it appears to be Facebook's fault. A far-reaching survey in the UK has shown quite conclusively that Prince Charles's subjects are stuffing themselves with 'chocolate and crisps' (the latter might be known to you as potato chips) while eagerly following their friends online. According to these figures, 33% of those surveyed said they had put on seven pounds in the last three months. But here is the real kick in the gut for the social networking industry. Almost half of those surveyed claimed that they would rather eat the leftover grease from the morning's plate of bacon, eggs and beans than fail to follow their friends' status updates. Well, they didn't specifically mention the grease. The clever survey construction team asked them to choose between filling their face with a 'proper evening meal' and filling their evening with Facebook." - Evgeni Leshtanski via Bookmarklet

Internet Eavesdropping: A Brave New World of Wiretapping: Scientific American
August 25 at 12:19 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Key Concepts * The advent of computer-based telephone switches and the Internet has made it more difficult for the government to monitor the communications of criminals, spies and terrorists. * Federal agencies want Internet companies to comply with the same wiretapping requirements that apply to telecommunications carriers. This proposal, though, may stifle Internet innovation. * Furthermore, the new surveillance facilities might be misused by overzealous government officials or hijacked by terrorists or spies interested in monitoring U.S. communications" - Evgeni Leshtanski via Bookmarklet

Do Social Networks Bring the End of Privacy?: Scientific American
August 24 at 2:11 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
Quote: "Key Concepts: * Social-networking sites allow seemingly trivial gossip to be distributed to a worldwide audience, sometimes making people the butt of rumors shared by millions of users across the Internet. * Public sharing of private lives has led to a rethinking of our current conceptions of privacy. * Existing law should be extended to allow some privacy protection for things that people say and do in what would have previously been considered the public domain." - Evgeni Leshtanski via Bookmarklet

Social movements 2.0 « Subject To Change
August 20 at 10:56 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
The old way that social movements used to progress: emerge–>coalesce–>bureaucratize–>outcome–>decline Social media definitely has the possibility to revolutionize this progression, making participation more democratic. I think the new movements start globally and move locally rather than the opposite in the past. There are countless wonderful posts describing what social media does best, so there is no need for me to reinvent the wheel. - Evgeni Leshtanski via Bookmarklet
