Almost certainly. Apple gets a cut of every monthly bill. The contract is the real money maker for Apple. I doubt they make much on the phone. Especially now with the price drop. - Kevin D. White
I've heard rumors of T-Mobile to sell unlocked 3G iPhones in Europe. - Hao Chen
So is there a consensus that the $199 model is locked? What happened to the rumor of $199 locked at AT&T in the US and un-locked at $499 at the Apple Store? - Jon West
i'd bet the ranch a 2 year agreement is part of the deal. let's get real. - sean808080
I believe Apple has a 5 year exclusive agreement with AT&T :-( - Jonathon
Yes, it does require a 2 yr. plan with AT&T. From Apple.com: " Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately." - Aanarav Sareen
Ok..sold separately? All I want to know is if I can walk in to an apple store and buy an iphone for 199 and walk out..is that possible? - Anthony
and the data plan is now $30 per month. - Doug Brooks
I listened live audio and watched video broadcast, it was midnight in Japan 2am-4am, still i might watch this official one. "Introducing the iPhone 3G!", right? Thanks, Phil! - Kenichi Matsumoto
Indeed, Kenichi! There is one huge reason why this phone is better than most of the japanese cell phones -- it will have native support for kanji including "finger writing" the kanji you want on the screen. I'll try to write a post about it. - Phil Glockner
Wow! "kanji-finger-writing" on mobile must be awesome. It's more like a computer than just a little mobile phone. Looking forward your review :) ( you must understand some kanji, Phil. My name goes like this. 松Matsu本moto 健Ken一ichi , just FYI! ) - Kenichi Matsumoto
“6:56 of the WWDC keynote video shows a 1 second clip of Lucy in the Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian on the iPhone. This movie is still in theatres! Does this mean anything? ”
I'm guessing not officially unless you buy from outside of the US where Apple doesn't deal with AT&T, it's a potential. But I'm sure the iPhoneDev team and others is/will be working on methods to jailbreak and SIM unlock the 3G. - Hao Chen
With all the snazz about being able to post photos to your blog, you'd think they would have sprinkled some fairy dust on the camera too. - Yolanda
Very true Robert - I was holding out for iPhone video before deciding on Nokia or not. Their announcements today really don't go beyond what a Nokia can provide. - Jesse Stay
what about bluetooth ad2p or cut and paste? - Christian Cadeo
@Christian Zip, Zilch, Nada, Nothing, Not this time around. - Kevin D. White
@kevin damn that is a deal breaker for me. I have been using a motorolo BT headset and there is no way i am going back to wires. - Christian Cadeo
I also think white is going to be the better choice as far as long term looks. That black plastic is going to look pretty rough after a while. Personally I stopped using cases about a few weeks after getting my iPhone. Its still in really good shape. I also wish they would opt for the darker corner/edge face like on the iPod Touch rather than the chrome on the iPhone. - Delete Me
“No video is a definite setback. I mean I am not complaining, but I thought the point to the game was consolidation. A day when you have one handheld that does everything.”
To be honest, them lowering the price was revolutionary in my book. Now everyone can feasibly get one. I'm sure more features will soon start rolling out after the next generation uptake. - CannonGod
I think I'll do it. Sounds like you can keep your .mac address or go with the .me and you get double the space (10GB currently, Mobile Me is 20GB). - Delete Me
look@mac.com is already taken. i'm sure there will be some kind of hold on me.com names if the mac.com name exists until they decide whether to switch or not. alias' will be interesting to see if they transfer or get dropped. - Delete Me
“I would have rushed out and picked up an iphone today, but with a month to think it over.. maybe not. We'll see. Not having them today was weak imho.”
“The iphone is awesome, no doubt about it. And the people who waited did a smart thing apparently. But previously, the iphone was a status symbol. Few people had them. Now its my turn, guy/girl who thought you were so cool with your old iphone!!1! !”
