As cognitive science matures as an academic discipline, and video games surpass television and movies as entertainment, expect to see lots of minds-of-gamers science.

Assuming this study is accurate and that this behavior is new for 2009, the interesting question is what cultural impact this will have over the next decade or so as these kids enter adulthood.

I've got a couple thoughts on this. First, I'm in favor of keeping languages alive, not because I equate it with keeping cultures alive, but because the languages are interesting in and of themselves. Second, I'm in favor of consolidation among world languages. If everyone on Earth spoke one of e.g. Mandarin, English, or Arabic, then we'd only need to solve machine translation between those three to allow anyone to communicate with anyone else - a much simpler problem than solving for every possible language pair. Third, there's some evidence that bilingualism protects the brain against dementia. Therefore, English "taking over" could be viewed as a health hazard. In the US, there's a growing English Only movement. In reaction to the English Only movement, there's also an English Plus movement. I think a similar model, applied globally, would be beneficial. My suggestion would be everyone learn at least one world language plus at least one other language.

While Google Wave sounds very exciting from a development viewpoint, I'm having a hard time seeing how this will be revolutionary to end-users...

Anders Sandberg wrote a post a few days ago about a model of lifespan increase as anti-aging technology is adopted - I think Lichtenberg's study would help nail down some of the uknowns.

"No one in their right mind goes around sharing every detail and secret of their lives with unknown and unpredictable strangers, so why would even an advanced species want to share their knowledge and power with potential rivals?" Except on an intergalactic MySpace, perhaps.

Intel has repeatedly made comments along these lines - it's become clear that making this happen is an explicit goal. Hopefully, Rattner is paying close attention to the SIAI's work on Friendliness Theory.

Who spent more of their Presidency on vacation, Dubya or Bush, Sr.? Who travelled more, Clinton or Reagan? It seems to me, there's got to be some organization somewhere that tracks this kind of Presidential time-utilization info, and organizes it into pretty charts and graphs. Help me find the information visualization I seek!
