i see it as a more immediate way of posting something, tumblr for shorter posts, a blog for something more extensive. Like tumblr guys say, a blog is a journal, tumblr is a scrapbook.

Nah, they just make some things easier than others. Like screwdrivers with different handles (not even heads)
- Roberto Baca
I used to think the same way, but since I discovered Posterous I have changed my mind: I use it to post to my main blog and to my Tumblr, and lately I'm starting to consider to make it my only blog. It's so easy to use!

The sites have value, but they could better not monetize it. Just like Google would look better without adwords. The problem is financing operations. I'm in favor to let an ISP consortium or Apple buy all these guys out, for a fair return.
- Meryn Stol
Keep in mind that comcast has recently bought plaxo. It's a comparable move.
- Meryn Stol
Web 2.0 was, at least partially, about monetization IMHO. One of the fundamental concepts was that it was cheap to start and run companies, so we could try out all these cool ideas (none of which were really new).
- mikepk
Saying it's just about conversations is meaningless... Conversations and UGC were happening from the beginning of the web and long before the "Web 2.0" term was coined.

This article is a worthy read about someone who behind the humongous walls that Scientologists tend to put up.
- Derrick
Everything else aside, that's a really pretty building.
- Rochelle
Rochelle, you should see it in person. Impressive. And then you get sad, because you see all the worker bees trying to convert you.
- Derrick
The SF headquarters is also pretty. The original "Bank of America" (Bank of Italy) I think.
- Richard Walker
Derrick, when I was working and taking the bus to/from downtown every day, the bus route went past the Seattle Scientology center. I always tried to look in the windows to see what they were doing in there, but the blinds were rarely opened. The parking lot was always full but I never saw anyone going in or coming out.
- Rochelle
Yeah, kind of the same here, Rochelle. And the funny thing is that in Los Angeles, there's the obvious glitzy celebrity connection, but the actual Scientologists that you see look like they got lost in 1977 Milwaukee. Strange.
- Derrick
When I was in LA last, we drove by the Scientology center on (or near?) W. Sunset Blvd. It looked like a jail compound or something, all set back with fences.
- Rochelle
Rochelle, there's a couple. They have one *just* for celebrities. People are always protesting in front of them now.
- Derrick
That's money well spent in helping fellow man right there it is.
- Michael W. May
I think that's the BIG one...there's another one on Hollywood Blvd., but the one you pointed out is super secretive and always packed, but you never see anyone going in or out, just tons of the worker bees, and the protesters. And hospital workers, since there's one right there, too.
- Derrick
Just stick fingers down their throats and have them throw up the aliens living inside of them. /end cleansing.
- Mona Nomura
I lived down the street from the Celebrity Center for years. Have a bunch of stories. Can't wait to read this. Either you're a business or religion, and true religion is free. Scientology has had it both ways for way too long.
- Steve Isaacs
God Scientology is a weird beast. Some of their really basic teachings make sense and could actually improve your life. The drama and crazy talk though - that's where it gets culty fast.

"OAuth is a mechanism by which users can authorize websites to grant third party applications access to user's information without sharing their credentials. This is increasingly important for things like iPhone applications, widgets, and other applications that connect to online services. OAuth itself isn't new, but moving towards IETF standardisation is a significant step."

EUROPE: HOW IT WENT DOWN FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE: At first, a trip to Rome with your parents sounded pretty lame. But you have absolutely nothing else going on in your life, so you tag along with them anyway. After dinner with Mom and Dad, you tell them you're going to go "for a walk" and head off to the bar district. Knowing very little Italian, you sit alone in a couple bars and end up talking to absolutely no one. Since you're determined to make a night of it, and because you promised all your friends back home that you were going to get laid in Europe, you ask the bartender where the nearest "prostituta casa" is and head in that direction. When the deed is complete you're more relieved than satisfied and wonder if you'll have to pay for sex for the rest of your life.

HOW IT WENT DOWN FROM HER PERSPECTIVE: This is my third one tonight. Jesus, business is booming. Is there some sort of conference in town? It's not World Cup or anything is it? I can never keep track of those goddamn sports tournaments. Why are they so popular anyway? Weird. Shit, I really need to do some laundry. Oh, and I have to pick up that dry cleaning. Why do I always keep forgetting that? I should write that down. You're done? That'll be 150 Euros.

"This is where narco folklore started, with songs and icons that pay homage to gangsters, and where children want to grow up to be traffickers. How Sinaloa confronts its own divided soul offers insight on where the drug war may be going for Mexico, where more than 5,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence this year. "The monster has lost all proportion," said Del Rincon, who is a member of the conservative National Action Party."

Beans @ breakfast? Is this a Canadian thing? No ketchup? ;)
- John Johnson
Wow! You guys are quite critical! Alex: I like when stuff is burnt! Mohomed: You mean the toast? John: I eventually put ketchup on after. And yes, beans at breakfast are quite Canadian and delicious :)
- Michael Forian
I have no need for beans at breakfast, but the rest looks good.
- MiniMage, enterRUPPted
Beans at breakfast is quite British too.. then again, I do recall beans being available on the breakfast buffet at Pondarosa on my trips to Florida, tho they were strange BBQ sauced beans.
- alphaxion
These beans are maple :) Real Canadian, eh?
- Michael Forian
I miss having a good traditional Canadian breakfast in the morning. I suppose I can make it myself and get up an hour earlier. Hmm...
- Vinko
Um, I'm all about eggs and meat, but that just looks ewwww--sorry!
- Kelly W.
Wow, I'm never inviting any of you over for breakfast. Is it the beans? If so, don't eat em'!
- Michael Forian
Breakfast is my favorite meal. I love brekkie for dinner. And I'm not scared of those beans, Michael. Bring it on.
- Derrick
they have some 3d team working hard...
- Oscar Juarez
awesome work!! and, they only have to build out about....20 more cities to match what maps.live.com has offered for over a year now. grats to all involved
- Chris Hollander
If somebody made me one of those, I wouldn't eat it. I would buy a big glass display case for it and hire a bodyguard to protect it 24/7!!!

And Singlehandedly, Mona starts a n AT-AT Gingerbread epidemic!

sometimes I wonder if my friends have too much time on their hands. And then I see pictures like this and realize that some people operate on entirely different levels of awesome.

I'll be impressed when I see the gingerbread death star. Ok I'm already impressed..I'll be more impressed!

Sent a quick, unsatisfying goodbye to the team. I watched as my access to various parts of the guts of Flickr fell away. I noticed how naturally I searched for any and all bits I could think of, just in the hope that it still existed. But no. I was shut out entirely within about 14 hours of the phone call. Support from friends kept coming - THANK... - http://george08.blogspot.com/2008...
It's actually pretty stupid on Yahoo's part to deny her a bit of time to transition this program. This is one of the more important things that Flickr was working on.
- Thomas Hawk
i still love flickr, of course...but i am amazed that such a prominent person with such well-documented contributions would actually be laid off at all...
- edythe
Repeat. If msft were *smart* they'd have her hired tomorrow. 1. Another very talented high profile yahoo with good pr value. 2. Someone who would be very valuable in helping to integrate flickr into msft properties if/when that happens and 3. Most importantly, their new windows live photo sharing desperately needs design work. This hire would be a total no brainer, assuming George would be willing to work for them.
- Thomas Hawk
MSFT is not smart. George is alive and hopefully in good health, and pain will go with time. It is _good_ that Yahoo had fired her - she is free for bigger now, and they has it shown _true_ face of current *management* (or rather lack of it). I wish George all the best, and I think on plan of how to move digital_me from Yahoo facilities now (mail is still on my list, and delicious too).
- A. T.
yes, thomas & silpol. i would think she'd be able to do whatever she likes.
- edythe
I actually watched Spaceballs yesterday. It was on the local CW affiliate. That movie is hysterical. "Let the Schwartz be with you."

In the largely indigenous communities in and around the town of Juchitán, the world is not divided simply into gay and straight. While Mexico can be intolerant of homosexuality, it can also be quite liberal. In Mexico City, for instance, same-sex domestic partnerships are legally recognized. But nowhere are attitudes toward sex and gender quite as elastic as in towns like Juchitán, in the far reaches of the southern state of Oaxaca. n this part of Oaxaca — a narrow strip of land known as the Isthmus — the locals make room for a third category, whom they call “muxes” (pronounced MOO-shays). Muxes are men who consider themselves women and live in a socially sanctioned netherworld between the two genders.

my family is from oaxaca and its very intersting to see the "lunes del cerro" parties, where everybody wears mask and mens dance with dressed men
- hector juarez
that's real interesting hector. for such a conservative culture to have such a different view when it comes to this is real eye-opening
