"Dan Brown's follow-up to The Da Vinci Code has sold more copies in its first 36 hours of UK release than any other adult hardback novel, say publishers."
- Kol Tregaskes
from Bookmarklet
Amazing writer? He thinks up compelling stories to be sure, but his actual writing is shockingly poor.
- Dawn
Ha! Glen beat me by a split second. The truth is, if you're used to good quality literature, Dan Brown's books are going to seriously annoy you.
- Dawn
I've read The DaVinci Code and I wasn't impressed at all, so gonna give this a pass.
- Rene Wirtz
Yeah i've read them all as well. There is nothing in there that makes me want to read it again. They are titting on the shelf gathering dust.
- Roberto Bonini
I liked DaVinci because I enjoy solving riddles. I liked Angels and Demons for the Pagan references in Rome's fountains and statues. I had fun looking up all the locations and checking out the clues. I think this one's about the Masons - not so interested in them.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
@m9m: Have you have ever read Umberto Eco's The Name Of The Rose and Foucault's Pendulum? I do hear that Angels and Demons is the better Brown book.
- Rene Wirtz
This time, I'm with Glen (and Dawn, too): "Hated it."
- Kamilah Gill
@m9m: :-) Those two were about 10x as good as Dan Brown's. My contention with Brown is that he writes his books like a screenplay, they are not so much meant to be read as they are to be seen. Then again, the movies kinda sucked, too.
- Rene Wirtz
Sometimes a book is a praiseworthy work of art. Sometimes it's a way to stuff your eyes and brain full of words. I read both kinds. (Name of the Rose for the Win, though.)
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
waiting for the paperback is a good call, Kol
- chrisofspades
Dawn - Have to agree. I was floored DaVinci Code was as popular as it was, when it reads like a script for a bad 40s serial.
- Ciaoenrico
You guys are obviously reading too slow...it's a page turner, meant to get you from point A to point B with a sense of adventure...it's not literature meant to be soaked up word by delicious word.
- Alex Scoble
Alex, you didn't feel a little let down by Lost Symbol? I did, and I've enjoyed all of Brown's previous works.
- chrisofspades
I haven't read it...just saying that if you stopped to notice that his writing wasn't Shakespeare or Hemmingway, you were reading too slowly. :)
- Alex Scoble
Dan Brown writes the epitome of beach reading: mediocre writing, fun plots that keep you turning the pages. That said, if the paperback is out by next summer, I'll read it on the beach then.
- Shannon Jiménez
"For the last few months, we’ve been watching the progress Epix, a joint venture between Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM studios to create a new web destination and sister TV channel for all of their movies. The project has been compared to Hulu, the web television joint venture between News Corp (FOX), General Electric (NBC), and Disney (ABC)."
- Kol Tregaskes

"The Epix project, while similar to Hulu in many ways, is different in one big way: only those with access to the Epix TV channel can access EpixHD.com. Instead of being ad-supported, it is carrier-supported. Now finally, after months of testing, Epix and EpixHD.com are launching to Verizon FiOS customers. While EpixHD isn’t open to all (yet – we’re still hoping), it is opening up to...

Do we have too much violence and terrorism in this world or is it not that much at all considering the world's population of 6B+ ppl and our history as a pretty violent race that seems to be constantly pre-occupied with power and empire building
Of course we don't need more and we need to strive towards decreasing it... But it is also not the case that - "The world is an extremely dangerous place now" as some reporters/media anchors make it out to be. It was probably way more dangerous 100 - 200 years ago.
- Bindu Reddy
Any amount is too much, but you're right that one might expect even more than we have already.
- Stephen Mack
violence against even a single person out of 6B+ is still Violence... today people have much easier access to much more info & resources to abuse & manipulate compared to 100-200 years ago. We have grown smarter but more dangerous also.
- Roshan Ramachandran
It's a great point to remember Bindu. We have made huge strides in so many areas because humans have consciously chosen to be more humane. It's not all bad.
- Todd Hoff
No doubt, Any amount is too much... The flip side is also true that today we get to hear a lot more about any violence that happens anywhere in the world because we are so much more connected. That said I am not advocating we turn a blind eye towards violence but I think it helps to remember that at some point world population was decreasing because ppl were killing each other off!

The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ysabel Legaspi
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going

I think it would be interesting to hear how do your plan your product/feature roadmap. How did it change over the last 2 years for friendfeed when you were thinking about products and features.
- Akshay Dodeja
Oh, also tell them when stream splicing (subscribing to friendfeed feeds within friendfeed - people and search) will be launched.
- Cliff Gerrish
Might be interesting to discuss how to distinguish "a feature" vs "complete product" in context of startup development strategy. Is a bright idea going to become a killer app? Or would even just an incremental improvement to current state of the art be a plausible basis for business plan appropriate for a startup?
- Dan Freeman
I suggest a talk on the rich and glorious future of the service FriendFeed on the World Wide Web.
- Thomas Hawk
You shall tell them that FF will be the freaky geeky cousin of FB for along long time
- Robert Higgins
Actually I don't care what you speak on, I just can't wait to hear it!
- Jay
Assuming that acquisition talks had been happening for a long time...how did you decide when was the right time to be acquired (and that Facebook was the right fit)? If the tables were turned (FF was FB's size and FB was FF's size) how would you handle the acquisition of Facebook? How is your role different at Facebook as compared to Friendfeed?
- Adam Kazwell
Talk about your vision of the Web to come (1-5 years) -- I can't care less about PR people, social media expert, guru or whatever talking about that but would be really interesting to hear you on this matter, and I guess it is the same for other people and startuppers
- alieb
Friendfeed’s Paul Buchheit has just confirmed to me that the next ‘big’ new feature coming to Friendfeed, will be the last. This comes a day after Buchheit issued a confusing statement about the future of the platform he co-founded. Here’s what Buchheit just told me, in full:
- Jim Connolly
from Bookmarklet
Mark: Not sure how it would change things for Paul and the guys - they just sold out to Facebook and have more money than they will ever need. (and they deserve every fricking penny BTW!!!)
- Jim Connolly
Well they sold for 50million, of that the various investors probably got 60-70%, with founders and early employees splitting the remaining 15-20million. Probably no more than a few million each (yeah nothing to spit at), but if they cashed out taxes would cut that in half, I think they still have to keep working. I think they sold too cheap, with 1 million users some focused and tasteful ads would have gotten far more revenue.
- Mark Essel
whew, got ya refollowed (went through and cleared out my following list on twitter now that I may have to use it again ;). staring from scratch)
- Mark Essel
A sign of how quiet things are now on Friendfeed? I've had 5 (FIVE) click-throughs from friendfeed to my blog after posting this here. 3 months ago it would have been massively more. Really sad watching it die slowly like this.
- Jim Connolly
Is that really a sign that it is dying or a sign that people are tired of reading the "death of friendfeed" posts?
- Alan Simpson
Alan: Not sure - but when a post has twice as many 'likes' as clicks it means something. That same post's been read over 400 times so far - so there's some interest out there.
- Jim Connolly
Mark: not true. Advertising for a million users wouldn't bring in that much on a forum-based site. Average CPM is about $3 per 1,000 page views. That wouldn't make anyone rich. The way Paul will become really rich is to help make Facebook a public company (they are well on their way). That means pouring all his skills into making Facebook a better service for its 300 million users (and growing).
- Robert Scoble
Alan: And there's no longer a debate - the co-founder confirmed no new development.
- Jim Connolly
It's also worth pointing out how much respect I now have for Paul, for being good enough to let us know the future plans - well, lack of future plans. That took balls and he deserves some credit.
- Jim Connolly
Feedback please: Do I delete my account now the platform's no longer being developed?
- Jim Connolly
Why would you delete it ? A lot of things have always just been fed through here without active participation.
- Eric Logan
So Jim, this is why you were pestering him so much in the thread? So that you could get a catchy headline for your blog? He said - "Jim, there may be a few new things, but as I said, the team is mainly working on fb platform and openness, so it's unlikely that there will be any big new features of ff (except maybe one that I've been thinking about for a while...). I don't see that as a...
- Kenton
When platforms cease being invested in, as you know, they slowly grind to a halt. Is it better to invest the time I spend here on a platform that's growing - rather than shrinking?
- Jim Connolly
Kenton: I don't need a catchy headline for a blog, thats only updated a couple of times a week and run as a pastime. The feedback you gave about deleting accounts screwing up comments makes sense. When the co-founder says that "it's unlikely that there will be any big new features of ff" I believe him.
- Jim Connolly
I guess it depends on why you're investing your time. If it is in the community, then I don't see why you can't still contribute. If you're using it for increasing your personal brand, business, blog traffic, etc then you are probably right to invest your time on sites that see more traffic and growth.
- Kenton
Kenton is right, you're title is wrong, fact. He did not say NO new features.
- Keith Bennett
If engagement continues to go down everyone will eventually migrate. I am sure there are a few groups talking to each other and the bots on Friendster. I do not see any reason why you would not continue to pipe in your content. I haven't found or been introduced to anything better at present. I do see some potential for Wave with proper development despite its complexity.
- Eric Logan
There's really nothing cool about all this cryptic communication Paul is giving us. All it's doing is riling us up and causing us to be unnecessarily speculative. We made this site be worth 50m, so we therefore don't deserve to be strung along like this.
- Brad Williamson
Keith: Did you interpret "it's unlikely that there will be any big new features of ff" as meaning there WILL be more big new features?
- Jim Connolly
"Thank you" - Seems the route is to keep the account alive, rather then mess up content for other users by deleting it. Appreciate the heads-up.
- Jim Connolly
Gotta go. Just subscribed to everyone who's commented here - so you can DM me. Really appreciate the feedback.
- Jim Connolly
Jim: No I didn't, but I also didn't post an article saying there will be NONE! Fact is, we don't know what they are up to, what they plan to do and that's what causes the speculation. You're adding fuel to the fire and I think you should change the title, that's all. Personally, I'm in the wait and see what happens camp. I'm happy with the service as is and I'm sure what emerges from the FB integration will be interesting, but until I know what that is, I'm happy to continue with what I have.
- Keith Bennett
y'all are beating a dead horse here. of course it's gonna die. Of course people are jumping off the ship. look at any number of other tech acquisitions and what became of them. It's not really that complicated.
- Bill Kinney
ICQ still exists...Winamp still exists...AOL still exists (but why?)
- Alex Scoble
Robert: $3 per 1000 views is pretty bad. I think I can do better through use of learning about what folks like in their streams. Heck I can't believe search activated ads are that weak. Well in a few more years that may be profitable (bandwidth/servers/etc are all getting cheaper, while our attention is staying even in value).
- Mark Essel
Another FriendFeed self prophecy post. Cast doubt about its future so users begin leaving, then it will HAVE to close because of lack of users! You should be doing the opposite and encouraging folks to join...its users that keep a service afloat..
