He said: "This has been our biggest innovation, and it is one of the reasons for our success." The key to promoting innovation in education was trust in teachers, said Lankinen, pointing out that Finland has no inspection system, national tests or league tables.

In 2008, the Learning Skills Foundation put on a series of four lectures based around the theme, 'Why Educate?' These lectures provided a platform for some of the leading academics to address fundamental questions about the nature of the education system in this country. The Independent is delighted to be able to offer you a free download of the book, Why Educate? for a limited period only.

The man behind a major inquiry into primary education today accuses Ed Balls and his ministers of "lashing out wildly" and dismissing his review findings without properly reading it.

Urban Prep is a single-sex charter school, a part state-funded school – a bit like Britain's academies. But here, all of the 450 male students are African-American, and 85% come from single-parent households. About 90% of the teachers and all the school leaders are African-American men. The majority of them are young, dedicated, ambitious and inspirational – deliberate role models. Many, including the principal, didn't have formal qualifications for their jobs when they were appointed. Urban Prep's founder, the charismatic Tim King, was willing to look beyond traditional recruitment pipelines and take risks. The staffing is essential to his vision.

With reference to http://kottke.org/09... "What's gonna happen to Apple if something happens with Steve Jobs? That's why it needs to be about a movement, not about a person or even a specific company." It could be risky when things rely on people for success. Coworking is a good example of a movement that is a success and is unlikely to fail because it doesn't rely on one single person to be pushing the concept. Are there any other good example?

The Home Educated Youth Council (HEYC) is an independent voice for home educated youth in the UK. Founded at HESFES 2009, HEYC was formed and is run entirely by home educated youth who became frustrated with the sheer lack of regard for the voices of children within the Badman Report. We intend to challenge the view of the DCSF that home educated children are simply mouthpieces for the views held by their parents. Although we are capable of speaking for ourselves, as a combined voice it will be harder for the Government to ignore us: the home educated.

No child leaves Treviglas community college in Newquay as a neet (not in employment, education or training). Headteacher Helen Mathieson simply doesn't allow it. Her school – the only 11-18 institution in Cornwall to be graded as "outstanding" by Ofsted, up from "satisfactory" just three years ago, she tells me – is "almost messianic" in its belief that every child should succeed.

We have been busy at NM Towers with the help of our friends at Hotwire contributing to articles and generally getting ourselves and our opinions out and about on the social media scene.

It’s been a while since I blogged, I know. But this time I have a good excuse. Seriously. It’s a very, very good excuse. You see, I’ve started a Social Network and Community for Robotics - Brighton Robotics - and it’s somewhat swallowed all my spare time.

I just got back from a geek event down the street: £5 App. I had fun talking about Huffduffer. You can download the slides or see them on Slideshare. I was all set to record the presentation using Audio Hijack but, while I remembered to click “hijack”, I stupidly forgot to press “record.” Sorry.

When given a chance to let their minds go, it's amazing what children can come up with. In Bristol, a special style of lesson has been developed precisely to give pupils in Key Stage 3 (11 to 14-year-olds) an opportunity to further investigate questions and issues like this. In these lessons, called Enquiring Minds, pupils are given a general steer - for example global warming - and are encouraged to explore relevant issues that capture their imaginations.

Some were there to do business, others just to socialise and meet new friends, but for most attendees of last night’s Twitter-meet Brightwest, it was a little bit of both. The rise of social media has meant a blurring of lines between personal and professional lives, but rather than feeling uncomfortable about it, most of the folks we talked to last night seemed happy enough to be wearing multiple hats and reaping the obvious benefits of doing so.

We’re sponsoring the bar down @Brightwest tonight – in the heart of Brighton, probably one of the world’s most passionate outposts of the global Twestival Smackdown today. It’s getting late here what with one thing and another, but before I cashed in my bar chips I wanted to set down why I think Twestival is important…

Today I've been co-working at the brand new Lewes Werks. Co-working means to work in an office with people who are not your colleagues, which is ideal for self-employed people or homeworkers. It's being run by the same people who run the Brighton Werks, so the philosophy is the same; to provide a shared workspace for creative workers, with an emphasis on the social side of work. There are also two separate rooms that would suit small companies of 4-6 people.
