"FriendFeed is very much a communications platform. At least that's how I'm using it. It's replaced Twitter for me 1000%." - Thomas Hawk
As soon as all the interesting people I follow on Twitter are here (and it may be soon) I will just turn off twhirl/Twitter and forget about it - Brian Sullivan
I agree that the two services are complementary rather than competitve. They serve different purposes. Some will use FF as a Twitter replacement, but that isn't where it's going to shine. As you stated in the post, Matthew, Twitter's biggest enemy is itself. - Gregory Pittman via twhirl
I think twitter is non-intrusive whereas friendfeed is more engaging so i dont see myself moving out of twitter currently - Kapil
there's no "block" feature on friend feed. that's major. - B.L. Ochman
FF appears fast and stable - that, to me is critical - hopefully the features will come - hopefully they are reading their own feedback group comments - Mot Faerin
I like both, so I'm not going to drop either one. - Rosana Kooymans
BL I can hide things here which is far better than block. - Robert Scoble
Early adopters do what what all early adopters do... whether it trickles down to the masses is a different story. Twitter is more cognitively ergonomic than FriendFeed, which is a combination of too many things. Twitter it is for the rest of us. - Kevin Lim
@Brian the majority of my Twitter friends are on FriendFeed, I don't use Twhirl as much as I used to now jut leaving the web page open and refreshing! - Joe Dawson
it's about the users and the data, I think people should be more concerned about how to monetize it (VC and waiting for acquisition doesn't count) - francis dupuis via Alert Thingy
FriendFeed has cool features, but I don't see it replacing Twitter for me any time soon. I like both, but use Twitter much more (when it's actually online :) ). - Daniel Shaw
I wish FF woujld make the font darker in this comment box, and the box as large as Twitter. It's harder to read and comment as quickly as Twitter. If FriendFeed did that, they would totally challenge Twitter. - Cathryn Hrudicka
FriendFeed is different things to different people. One thing it is though, is useful. - Tanath

Like a content fliter/blocker? Hmmmm. That might be interesting. You should add that suggestion to Rooms Feedback: http://friendfeed.com/rooms/ro... - Nathaniel Payne
Someone could probably write a Greasemonkey script to do that :) - Deepak
Of course, if I had said filter this item would be hidden from view. :-) - Robert Scoble
Me too. Here's my prediction for today - there will be several threads about how friendfeed is better than twitter, followed by several about twitter being down, those will lead to talks about scale, which roll back to talks about friendfeed being better than twitter. Throw in a couple of tricks for using friendfeed and we're done. Any takers.. i'm willing bet on this :) - Doug Brooks
I give it two more minutes before we see the first blog post: "FriendFeed killed Twitter, again." - Robert Scoble
@Robert If this filter came into being, I would just start saying "Twiter" and "FreindFeed" just to piss you off. ;) - Nathaniel Payne
Nathaniel: funny, but you wouldn't know I was autofiltering on those terms, or what terms I was autofiltering on. - Robert Scoble
yup. twitter has been unusually sick this week. I am loving the rooms feature as it really adds a nice filter for content and helps people gather around a specific subject matter. Vanity rooms are less effective at that. - Rodney Rumford
FriendFeed kill Twitter? Not going to happen hahah - it's really at the top - exactly 2 mins - Doug Brooks
@DougBrooks have you seen Robert's Facebook status ad for FF: "is wondering if there's any advantage to Facebook's new Mini-Feed import vs. FriendFeed." Interesting, yes? {BTW, I'm a taker on your scenario} - Barbara K. Baker
+1 for that feature - Mike Doeff
keyword content filters would be awesome... it would be great to never have to see the word Obama again. - Thomas Hawk

First spam on FF ? - Nicolas Gosset via twhirl
doesn't yahoo pipes let you do that? - Jonathan Denison
Get rid of them both :) - Azzam
It may be awhile before that happens - if they can't do anything about grey text quickly and easily, attacking word/term filters may be a bit much. :( - Lucretia Pruitt
@BarbaraKBaker I'm not sure if I've seen that or not? Is there a link? BTW "problem loading page" at twitter right now :). - Doug Brooks
Scoble's is wisely asking for boolean logic driven query to be available with the HIDE function; I will go one more...please add to the existing search functionality too. Still can't figure out where the "Advanced Search" is that I hear about. Louis? help! - Susan Beebe
Do you mean like the filter by service script from http://tinyurl.com/3ekn6u (for Firefox)? - Ro (Lilyhill)
I want filtering by regular expressions. - Benedikt Koehler
In addition to a filter, I also think it would be nice to have a follow mode for threads that are interesting. Maybe in a tab of it's own. - Doug Brooks
I'm betting that within a few months the next big invention will turn up that makes both Twitter and Friendfeed look like boring old services. The entire FF tech elite will jump ship and bail out to the next great thing. The circus starts all over again. And the average Web user? Couldn't be bothered by all the noise the techies produce. We just love ourselves don't we ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
@alexanderVanElsas well of course that's true. Society as a whole is doubling our knowledge every year so it's a certainty that these services with evolve and becoming something entirely different. That's the cool part i think. Those same average web users missed the irc and bulletin boards too (both of which i am reminded of with ff). - Doug Brooks
@Doug, true, but us techies make such a big deal out of it, I understand where Robert is coming from, even though he started the echoing himself ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
FF should add support for third party plug-ins for filtering, presentation/visualization, notifications, etc. - scott anderson
Real-time text and video chat should be next... how about plug-ins that allow us to better connect our social services? - Larry Kless
BTW I just noticed of the last 6 items Robert shared on FF, 3 are about FF and Twitter. Robert, time to hide yourself, greatly reduces the noise i bet ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
I like noise. Most people don't. If you only design a product for those who like noise you will fail. - Robert Scoble
If it was automatic, you would not be able to see your own post! - Mot Faerin
I don't mind the noise either actually. All the info is like a river passing by. I take a swim every once in a while. But you (Robert) are partially the spark that set off a lot of items that discuss either Friendfeed or Twitter or both. I can hear the echo in a deep, empty hole every time I look. Just look at TechMeme right now where about 12 so called Alist bloggers are on top, and none of them is saying anything new (Echo Echo) - Alexander van Elsas

Time for a one week boycott - Todd Cochrane via twhirl
Wow. I hadn't thought about DMs. That's a good point. FF doesn't facilitate that. Does it? - Chris Brogan
Since I mostly use twitter via twhirl or IM, it really has not been noticeable. Maybe Twitter should only allow historical information through the API, not the web interface and be done with it. - Jauder Ho
No. No DMs on FF. - Jennifer Leggio
If FF had all the traffic that twitter gets, would it be any more stable - Seth Gottlieb
This is nuts that you're all here. Is there a follow-back automagically for FF yet? I'm um, a little behind. - Chris Brogan
Here's the T-->FF link - I just did it, works great. http://internetducttape.com/20... - anniebinns
Seth - someone asked that earlier and the response was that its aggregating more content than Twitter now and that yes, it's still stable. Not sure I buy it. FF is great but it's not yet the solution we need. - Jennifer Leggio
I can stand the outages with FriendFeed doing it's thing. I have no doubts in my mind that Twitter will clean up its act soon as it continues to expand. - Ryne Nelson
How do you "like" a comment? What Seth Gottlieb said. It's like Apple always bragging about having no viruses. If they were as ubiquitous as PCs chances are they'd have a few more viruses. (I know, not the same thing: an Apple's an Apple; a PC's a ... any number of brands.) - Robert Stribley
@ ron k jeffries: Really? You can't think of at least *one* way Twitter is better on your own? How about the lack of the @ function, or any individual notification of replies to your content. Just a few days ago I made a comment on Twitter (actually about the Twitter vs FF debate), Scoble replied on FriendFeed, and a discussion sprung up around it on FF that I couldn't participate in because I wasn't glued to FF at the time. If it were on Twitter I would have received a notification on my cell immediately. - Ryan MF
This is becoming a seriously long thread/ decent conversation. ftw. - jjprojects
Really hard to follow discussions on here - Jennifer Leggio
I just blogged about this, too. But you know that, because you're watching FriendFeed. - Chris Brogan
Hi everybody...this is amazing! wow, I am seeing more and more of my twitter buddies over here!! yeah!!! @smbeebe loves you guys! ;-) - Susan Beebe
it is very true that it is hard to keep up with conversations here over time... and once you are subscribed to quite a few people, you're really combing -- through new posts, through friends of friends... unless you are "glued," as Ryan MF said - edythe
@edythe big trick with FF is to learn the hide feature fast - Philip Evans via twhirl
It would be nice if FF comments had paragraphs. FF is extremely aggressive at caching where it is possible to observe variances between the web and API interface. On a different note, I wish FriendFeed was called something else or had a different acronym. FF = FriendFeed = Firefox in different contexts. - Jauder Ho
You'd think that they would have really fixed things by now. This constant tinkering is a joke. It is like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. It just isn't working! - Jacob Burke
I just wish FF was a bit more threaded in discussion, instead of just a single thread under first post - Philip Evans via twhirl

Well, with Twitter down, I get more work done! :) - Julio

May 21 at 3:16 pm - via twhirl - Link
I recently switched from Mail.app to Gmail's web interface. It's much faster. - Ole Begemann
That is not going to be pretty. - Shawn Farner
Ole interesting, I am doing the opposite, I was using Mailplane but with my volume of incoming emails it is really slow - Loic Le Meur
Thunderbird is the real deal ! - Jonathan Belgourari
thunderbird on OSX is good enough? When I tried a year ago it lacked many features - Loic Le Meur
im using a combination of outlook (work), gmail (mobile) and mail.app (at home) via imap and it works a bloody treat - Mark Allanson
Loic, I use Fluid to turn Gmail into a standalone app. I don't get too many emails from day to day but my archive is fairly big (about 50,000 messages). Yet, Gmail is always responsive and search is fast. I can't say the same about Mail.app with IMAP. - Ole Begemann
How exactly are you going to do that? - Julian Baldwin
I use Thunderbird, and have one Gmail account in there. I used to have more Gmail accounts in Thunderbird, but whatever I tried, it kept acting rather buggy. Asking me for my passwords constantly, then not logging in anyway. - Rosana Kooymans
Loic, I have about 12,000 messages using Mail and Gmail IMAP: it definitely feels the burn. If I need to get to my archives, I wind up just logging into Gmail proper. - Mark Trapp
I just switched to Thunderbird from Outlook. My .pst corrupted for the last time. So far I have been pleased, but I miss my plugins (salesforce, xobni, etc...) - Alex C. Williams
Loic, have you considered Mailplane? I tried the Gmail IMAP thing on Apple Mail, and it's good, but if you use labeling at all or have lots of messages (and you have more than I do), the web interface is better. Using Mailplane makes Gmail work in a separate window and is really good - http://mailplaneapp.com/ - Stephen Collins
Although useful, I find Gmail's imap implementation a little too quirky for regular use with Mail.app. - Scott Jarkoff
Wow, Loic, why on earth are you getting so many messages? Something is really wrong with your workflow and communication practices. So many emails will render the medium useless. You need to meet with a communications consultant, I think! Good luck! - Christine Cavalier
I am still on a quest for the perfect email client. Christine, I will say that sometimes, that much email is unavoidable. I have an Outlook PST of about a year's communication with one client project clocking in at just over 26,000 messages. IMAP (which is good in concept) is still not the easiest to use when you have a lot of messages. - Jauder Ho
Have switched permanently to gmail. I'm using it's keyboard shortcuts and the extension GTDinbox for workflow etc. - David Smith
Loice: Advice - Put auto-responders with advice on how to get your attention for important messages (great subject liners). Don't respond to those that do now follow your rules ;) delete the rest ! - net
I hate mail! huh? - SteJules via twhirl
ARGH!!! Twhirl ate my comment. AGAIN! It has a really disconcerting way of discarding everything when a new post/comment comes in. One email trick that I have found useful is to aggressively filter incoming mail. Makes it easier to mark all as read without worrying about missing an important email. It would be great if there was a Bayesian filter creator that learns filtering based on communications patterns. Maybe Xobni... - Jauder Ho
Why not just use the web interface? Works really well for me - Benjamin Golub
Loïc, imagine if you were famous you'd get even more emails! Je rigoooole ;-P - JYS
@Benjamin that's what I ended up having to do. I prefer using a client as scrollback is easier. twhirl works well for twitter, just not so good for friendfeed. - Jauder Ho
mail.app is WAY better at spam catching than Google. I may move all my mail there instead of the web app. - Cyndy
@Cyndy: really? For me it's the opposite. Gmail's spam filter is almost perfect while Mail.app fails to catch about 5 spams a day, even after long training. - Ole Begemann
Jeez, Loic you have a long day ahead of you. - Andrew Dobrow
I'm back using the web over imap myself. gmail on the web is aces. - Jason Toney
Ole, today: mail.app caught 478 spam messages. 1 error, and it was an eBay phishing message. Two Gmail accounts: less than 50 spam caught, and at least 5 in each box I had to mark. - Cyndy
WHAAAAAAAA? 10603 e-mails? Select-All Delete. I wouldn't bother. - DAVE ID
How can you extract anything meaningful out of that many emails??? - Gerard van Schip
I've had it in Thunderbird via IMAP for months (Mail too, but I don't use it as often). Both are awesome! -
