"Around 11 am in San Francisco, our main database db006, crashed because of too many connections. We have to put the service into an unscheduled maintenance mode to recover. Folks will see degraded service for the next few hours."
- Louis Gray
They are now communicating - good! One commenter on the blog suggested that Twitter have 3 servers in different parts of the US. However, Twitter is global...

Feature Request: I want to hide any item that says "Twitter" and "FriendFeed." That would greatly reduce the noise here today. I'm doing that manually, but doing it manually sucks cause I still have to see the items and deal with them. Now, if we could do that automatically...
Someone could probably write a Greasemonkey script to do that :)
- Deepak Singh
Of course, if I had said filter this item would be hidden from view. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Me too. Here's my prediction for today - there will be several threads about how friendfeed is better than twitter, followed by several about twitter being down, those will lead to talks about scale, which roll back to talks about friendfeed being better than twitter. Throw in a couple of tricks for using friendfeed and we're done. Any takers.. i'm willing bet on this :)
- Doug Brooks
I give it two more minutes before we see the first blog post: "FriendFeed killed Twitter, again."
- Robert Scoble
@Robert If this filter came into being, I would just start saying "Twiter" and "FreindFeed" just to piss you off. ;)
- Nathaniel Payne
Nathaniel: funny, but you wouldn't know I was autofiltering on those terms, or what terms I was autofiltering on.
- Robert Scoble
yup. twitter has been unusually sick this week. I am loving the rooms feature as it really adds a nice filter for content and helps people gather around a specific subject matter. Vanity rooms are less effective at that.
- Rodney Rumford
FriendFeed kill Twitter? Not going to happen hahah - it's really at the top - exactly 2 mins
- Doug Brooks
@DougBrooks have you seen Robert's Facebook status ad for FF: "is wondering if there's any advantage to Facebook's new Mini-Feed import vs. FriendFeed." Interesting, yes? {BTW, I'm a taker on your scenario}
- Barbara K. Baker
It may be awhile before that happens - if they can't do anything about grey text quickly and easily, attacking word/term filters may be a bit much. :(
- Lucretia Pruitt
@BarbaraKBaker I'm not sure if I've seen that or not? Is there a link? BTW "problem loading page" at twitter right now :).
- Doug Brooks
Scoble's is wisely asking for boolean logic driven query to be available with the HIDE function; I will go one more...please add to the existing search functionality too. Still can't figure out where the "Advanced Search" is that I hear about. Louis? help!
- Susan Beebe
In addition to a filter, I also think it would be nice to have a follow mode for threads that are interesting. Maybe in a tab of it's own.
- Doug Brooks
I'm betting that within a few months the next big invention will turn up that makes both Twitter and Friendfeed look like boring old services. The entire FF tech elite will jump ship and bail out to the next great thing. The circus starts all over again. And the average Web user? Couldn't be bothered by all the noise the techies produce. We just love ourselves don't we ;-)
- Alexander van Elsas
@alexanderVanElsas well of course that's true. Society as a whole is doubling our knowledge every year so it's a certainty that these services with evolve and becoming something entirely different. That's the cool part i think. Those same average web users missed the irc and bulletin boards too (both of which i am reminded of with ff).
- Doug Brooks
@Doug, true, but us techies make such a big deal out of it, I understand where Robert is coming from, even though he started the echoing himself ;-)
- Alexander van Elsas
FF should add support for third party plug-ins for filtering, presentation/visualization, notifications, etc.
- scott anderson
Real-time text and video chat should be next... how about plug-ins that allow us to better connect our social services?
- Larry Kless
BTW I just noticed of the last 6 items Robert shared on FF, 3 are about FF and Twitter. Robert, time to hide yourself, greatly reduces the noise i bet ;-)
- Alexander van Elsas
I like noise. Most people don't. If you only design a product for those who like noise you will fail.
- Robert Scoble
If it was automatic, you would not be able to see your own post!
- Mot Faerin
I don't mind the noise either actually. All the info is like a river passing by. I take a swim every once in a while. But you (Robert) are partially the spark that set off a lot of items that discuss either Friendfeed or Twitter or both. I can hear the echo in a deep, empty hole every time I look. Just look at TechMeme right now where about 12 so called Alist bloggers are on top, and none of them is saying anything new (Echo Echo)
- Alexander van Elsas
The Secondary Thomas Hawk effect. Yesterday about 20 people felt the Thomas Hawk effect first hand. When someone subscribes to me now I try to go to their stream and favorite some of their photos. The Secondary TH effect is noticeable when i review the new subscribers favorites. Some of the new favorites are those that TH introduced on FF.
- Russellreno
I know the "Thomas Hawk" effect tooo.. I was mentioned in # 10 yesterday in his blog. This picture of you is awesome.... where is this taken? Beverly Hills view looking down on LA street scene?
- Susan Beebe
@Susan - This is TH> "Foggy night tonight in San Francisco."
- Russellreno
It's like AA: "Hi, I'm Chris Brogan, and I'm really f-ing sick of Twitter not working." Everyone: "Hi, Chris!"
- Louis Gray
Yep. I've had two days now on FF exclusively and I occasionally poke my head back into Twitter to see if it's up. Another day or two of this and who knows...
- Kevin Cearns
Yeah, it's hard to believe they are having this many problems. I'm a developer and I konw it's tough sometimes... but seriiously figure something out here since they have a great opportunity...
- Adrian Nadeau
LOL - Chris is frustrated like the rest of us!! twitter outages are sooo annoyingly old hat it is become the laughing stock of all social media sites...sad!
- Susan Beebe
Yeah, me too re twitter not working. I'm liking friendfeed more and more too. It works.
- jjprojects
Funny how we're all here, though, eh? I mean, really. Nuts.
- Chris Brogan
I only *really* like FriendFeed when Twitter *really* isn't working.
- Ryan MF
Entirely f-ing sick of it. Went to my first tweet-up last night, and was really stoked to get up this morning and play/talk/interact/etc. -- FAIL :|
- Brad McCrorey
explain to me how Twitter is better that FF on any dimension.
- ron k jeffries
Hi I'm Peter and I am a twitter Addict - I have not been on twitter for the day. Oh Lord, grant me the serenity to know that twitter is undependable and give me the strength to find other platforms to sustain my daily life one day at a time !!
- Peter Dawson
Just as we need a backup but not identical laptop, we need a backup, but not identical Twitter.
- Attila Csordas
I think I have to eat crow, I said FF couldn't possibly be a Twitter killer...but this is ridiculous, and I'm starting to see that is very realistic that we all end up on FF and just post here

ohhh... there's an importer for twitter to friendfeed? yes please..

If ff had DMs and mobile version, it might be a good alternative that actually works.
- jjprojects
Wow. I hadn't thought about DMs. That's a good point. FF doesn't facilitate that. Does it?
- Chris Brogan
Since I mostly use twitter via twhirl or IM, it really has not been noticeable. Maybe Twitter should only allow historical information through the API, not the web interface and be done with it.
- Jauder Ho
Seth - someone asked that earlier and the response was that its aggregating more content than Twitter now and that yes, it's still stable. Not sure I buy it. FF is great but it's not yet the solution we need.
- Jennifer Leggio
I can stand the outages with FriendFeed doing it's thing. I have no doubts in my mind that Twitter will clean up its act soon as it continues to expand.
- Ryne Nelson
How do you "like" a comment? What Seth Gottlieb said. It's like Apple always bragging about having no viruses. If they were as ubiquitous as PCs chances are they'd have a few more viruses. (I know, not the same thing: an Apple's an Apple; a PC's a ... any number of brands.)
- Robert Stribley
@ ron k jeffries: Really? You can't think of at least *one* way Twitter is better on your own? How about the lack of the @ function, or any individual notification of replies to your content. Just a few days ago I made a comment on Twitter (actually about the Twitter vs FF debate), Scoble replied on FriendFeed, and a discussion sprung up around it on FF that I couldn't participate in because I wasn't glued to FF at the time. If it were on Twitter I would have received a notification on my cell immediately.
- Ryan MF
This is becoming a seriously long thread/ decent conversation. ftw.
- jjprojects
I just blogged about this, too. But you know that, because you're watching FriendFeed.
- Chris Brogan
Hi everybody...this is amazing! wow, I am seeing more and more of my twitter buddies over here!! yeah!!! @smbeebe loves you guys! ;-)
- Susan Beebe
it is very true that it is hard to keep up with conversations here over time... and once you are subscribed to quite a few people, you're really combing -- through new posts, through friends of friends... unless you are "glued," as Ryan MF said
- edythe
@edythe big trick with FF is to learn the hide feature fast
- Philip Evans
from twhirl
It would be nice if FF comments had paragraphs. FF is extremely aggressive at caching where it is possible to observe variances between the web and API interface. On a different note, I wish FriendFeed was called something else or had a different acronym. FF = FriendFeed = Firefox in different contexts.
- Jauder Ho
You'd think that they would have really fixed things by now. This constant tinkering is a joke. It is like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. It just isn't working!
- Jacob Burke
I just wish FF was a bit more threaded in discussion, instead of just a single thread under first post
- Philip Evans
from twhirl
This is one of those situations where I feel really bad clicking "I like this", but I want to mark my appreciation for it. Makes me feel I should be doing something more meaningful with my SX-70 that's sitting in my drawer.
- Fearghas
Wow. I tried taking a picture every day for a year. Only made it 6 months. I can't imagine doing it for 18 years! That's really dedication, especially when I'm sure there were days he simply didn't feel like it because of his health. Amazing, yes.
- Lindsay
Incredible and inspiring. Thanks for posting this!

...I began my 365days on flickr 01.01.08 and thought that would be a large enough endeavor. For him to do that many years is amazing...so is his story.

That is very moving. Thanks for sharing this persons story.
- Geoff Schultz
Amazing. Reminds me a little of Matt Haughey's '10 Years Of My Life' project (http://www.tenyearsofmylife.com/about). It appears that Matt abandoned the project late last year.
- Mike Doeff
this is one of the reasons why FF is so cool and why I like to cast a large net and add as many people as possible. I've been finding so many really interesting stories from other people on FF here lately. I probably would never have seen this story had it not been for finding it here in Sacca's feed.
- Thomas Hawk
@Thomas which is why I reposted it from Ken Norton's feed. I love the diversity of posts here and some just should be seen by any many people as possible.
- Christopher Sacca
Wow. This just basically makes me want to start a 365 project sooner than I planned. I am currently too busy but I'd like to take at least one pic each day, for as long as I can keep up.
- Rosana Kooymans
very moving. I like the sports he watched, photography, skiing, etc.
