Is anyone else having terrible 3G service. I don't even get calls or texts when I'm in my basement. Sucks.
I had this problem until I became a weekly nag on At&t. Now I have great service in my home and it now works in the basement. - sean808080

@sean808080 How did the make your service better? Did they add more towers near your location? - Shawn Hickman
You could try getting a repeater. That would probably improve signal quite a bit. - Ryan Twomey
@ryan I gave it a look, but I don't really want to spend anymore money on a service that should already work. Thanks tho. - Shawn Hickman

sigre on Are My Ideas Being Stolen? If So, What Then? - http://reddit.com/r...
"There are trolls out there that regularly send their brilliant "ideas" to lots of companies, and sue when they think the company stole it. Apple has a legal notice whenever you try to contact them about unsolicited ideas. Movie companies are constantly dealing with these idiots. A lot of people have this sense of entitlement: my idea is so great, it's guaranteed to make a ton of cash, and you owe me for coming up with it. Doing away with software patents is the first step, but really we need to remove the notion that ideas are worth anything. This means overhauling the patent system to encourage development, rather than encouraging do-nothing holding companies to sit on thousands of patents and looking for infringement." - Ryan Twomey

Apple to sell a $99 4GB iPhone at Walmart? : Boy Genius Report

Black Friday not terrible; Christmas not doomed? » VentureBeat - http://venturebeat.com/2008...
Black Friday not terrible; Christmas not doomed? » VentureBeat
"The big post-Thanksgiving shopping day known as Black Friday wasn’t as awful for retailers — at least for online retailers — as some had feared, according to new data from comScore. That’s a good sign for the online economy, since Black Friday is usually seen as an indicator of how the rest of holiday shopping season will go. Online shoppers spent a $534 million on Friday, up 1 percent from last year. That’s not a dramatic increase, but at least it’s growth. PayPal did even better — it told Reuters it saw almost 34 percent more transactions on Black Friday this year than last year. In comparison, for the first 28 days of November, online spending is down 4 percent overall." - Robert Worstell from Bookmarklet
I find it so interesting that online deals for Black Friday were better than Cyber Monday. I heard a lot of people saying that because Cyber Monday wasn't great that Christmas would be doomed. This data is encouraging. - Ryan Twomey

@armoredtech I disagree that Nokia is not aiming at iPhone and at Google. Those are the two that have freaked out Nokia execs, not Xperia.
Nokia is definitely targeting iPhone customer base...that's pretty clear - Susan Beebe
A Nokia exec told me that the CEO is yelling at everyone internally because of the iPhone and Google's Android. He said "Nokia is a company under stress." Steve Jobs sure disrupted them. Makes Nokia an interesting company to watch. - Robert Scoble
Hard to play catch up! Mobile market is really one of the most competitive and fastest to market with new developments. - Susan Beebe
ha ha - @baratunde from IM
Until a real unit comes out rather than a prototype the jury has to remain out but I have my doubts about Nokia being a success. - Nick Rigby
Every mobile device maker is targeting the iPhone market though. I like the n97 look, but we'll see where it goes. I'm personally in love with Nokia products strictly from the n810 series. But, it still depends on how they market. It's not just hardware design that makes iPhone successful. It's the seamless store interaction. Same thing with iPod/iTunes. - Ben Hwang from twhirl
I think it's a mistake for Nokia to get all bent out of shape over G1 and iPhone. They should focus on other parts of the market, which is still the largest part: low-cost mass-market phones for everyone else. - Ryan Twomey
Clear willingness to compete and that's good. Too bad Nokia just announced it was leaving the Japanese market... - Paul Papadimitriou
I don't see why Nokia is trying to take iPhone head on. N97 is a high end N series device in a portfolio of zillions of mobiles they have in the market place. iPhone is only 1 of 2 phones Apple has out in the market place and they also offer the end to end service of content delivery that people have come to trust bacuse of the iPod. As for Google, they are competing - it is their open source initiative that is providing competition. the plan there is to grab a share of the community that being open brings - Mauricio Reyes
Nokia knows that iPhone is the one to beat. Beat it or it will beat you. - Phil Boiarski
Mauricio, that end-to-end content delivery ala ipod is not a good way to set things up. Let the hardware manufacturer control your access to content and you're just asking for trouble. Nokia's product slays the iphone on features, so the only reason it's losing is because of a marketing failure. When's the last time you saw an ad for Nokia product (in the US)? - Mr. Gunn
Hi Mr.Gunn, you make a valid point re: Nokia marketing in the US. I am based in the UK and my experience is with the European scene. Now I completely agree that the Apple way not the ideal way, but at the end of the day the end user just wants a product that works first time - its this experience that Apple seem to have done so well recently. iPhone is not a well spec'd device but its user experience is spot on for the non tech savvy. You always hear the classic "My mum picked one up and...blah blah blah" - Mauricio Reyes
Mauricio. Exactly. Geeks have a hard time understanding the technically challenged. Apple understands that they just want to "do" something, not "learn a new system." - Phil Boiarski
Hi Phil - I seem to remember Microsoft pitching that idea about 5/6 years ago - that users could seamlessly move from their Windows products to using their WINCE ones on the basis that everyone knew Windows. The trick to mass market appeal is not releasing a heavy weight tech beast but engaging with the non tech and releasing something they feel they can just pick up and use - focusing on good old fashioned user experience - look at the Wii as another perfect example. - Mauricio Reyes

Trying this out now. I've been using the sync feature via CalDAV, but that doesn't sync to the iPhone at all (no calendar subscriptions can sync). Hopefully this works better. - Ryan Twomey
Yep same here, no support when handshaking with the iPhone. So I synched via USB, and then you can see all of your events, but you are UNABLE to add an event to a calendar from your iPhone. Not impressed. - Drew Lucas

Why Twitter Turned Down Facebook - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com
"For now, a marriage between Twitter and Facebook is not meant to be — but the courtship between the two Web 2.0 companies could be rekindled in the future. "It will definitely be interesting to watch. I liken this to the Internet video industry: it wasn't until YouTube proved that online video could be a commercial enterprise did the media companies become interested in working with the trend (Hulu) instead of against it. I'd bet that the success of streaming radio via Yahoo and AOL (and Pandora and Last.fm) has shown the media companies that it's possible to work with this audio trend rather than against it." - Ryan Twomey

Calgoo Connect was a free and great solution to my 'syncing' needs. But this comes from big-G :-) - Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
The implementation is the same as it was a month or two ago. That is, multiple CalDav accounts for multiple calendars. Shouldn't there just be one CalDav server allowing access to multiple calendars. Because of Google's strange implementation, iCal's UI looks like crap if you have add more than one gcal subscription. - Paul Grav
Just tried and deleted: it doesn't sync your iCal calendars, it just imports your Google Calendars to your iCal and that's gonna ruin everything. I'll stick with Calgoo Connect. - Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
Just tried Calgoo Connect, but didn't like how it had to always have a status icon in my menu bar, and I have to leave it running for it to sync. - Ryan Twomey

App Store Lessons: Apple not so good at the math
As the commenters have pointed out, the math is influenced by more than just the visual reviews. When users delete the app, they can review it. Also, it may take other App Stores from around the world into account in the aggregate rating. - Ryan Twomey

Simon, for my thoughts really best to read my thoughts in the post but frankly I'm sick of services that have had the time to at least get bugs fixed and highly requested features added...and never do and wonder why they're not doing well. Twitter is up there and *if* they continue the way there are - they'll get what they deserve. - Zee.
Ok mainly a bugs thing then. I wrote a big rant here about Twitter, but then decided not to post it, as we dont wanna get off topic. ill save it for another time :) - Simon Wicks
i'm sure there'll be plenty of appropriate occasions... :) - Zee.
I don't think Pownce ever got the traction it needed. - Paul W. Swansen
I subscribed to Pownce and never bought in. Why? With FriendFeed and Twitter. Plus, information overload, I focused my energy on FF and Twitter instead. - ka3drr
Pownce was acquired for the talent. Personally, I never got Pownce, but I am sorry to see it go. People that were using it (and liked it) are left out in the cold all of a sudden. - Ryan Twomey
I think it was pretty clear once co founder kevin rose started advertising his twitter account instead of his pownce account that the end was near. - Aaron D'Amico
I tried Pownce and didn't like the format. I'm very much into using SM platforms that work for me and it didn't so I bailed. More of us need to do that. We have to control it...not let it control us. - Angela
I really enjoyed Pownce for a while. If they hadn't had all of their technical problems earlier this year I might not have made it here onto FF. - Internet's Tad

Joost for the iPhone is pretty cool. Watching videos and even a few movies over the net. Still wondering when live video streaming will really take off on the iPhone. - http://www.marketwatch.com/news...
Good news. - Halil Gökdal
I was commenting about it in my podcast I recorded this morning - reminds me, I need to post that - and it is a lot better than the desktop app or website ever were. - alphaxion
I think it is an improvement over the application. The interface has less 'stuff' to confuse and distract. I would like some options in displaying information. For example listing by popularity, alphabetical or most recent-- have to find a way to get the information you want to the user easier and faster in a mobile app than you do on a desktop one. Still enjoying it though. - Andrew Leyden
it also takes quite a while between tapping on the show you want and the stream beginning - alphaxion
Would be neat if Netflix had an iPhone app - Nick Humphries
The Instinct has live TV streaming, and I have to say, it works. Watched CNN on election night on the bus home. - Fleagle
I'm not sure I could watch an entire movie on an iPhone. I tried that on my PSP during flights a couple of times, and it just wasn't working for me (and that was a bigger screen). - Fleagle
I've watched a few full movies on a plane, although I often skip around a bit to get to the good bits. On those 14 hour flights to Hong Kong you get tired of the inflight magazine :-). @Jason--I saw that wifi and said 'no, they must be kidding' but you're right. while this is "cool" I fail to see how it is "useful" in its current form. - Aaron D'Amico
a step in the right direction though maybe? - Zee.
i think the biggest problem with new interfaces for personal computers is the requirement of a keyboard with tactile feedback. It would be interesting if the gestures could be done as you hover your hands a cm or 2 over the keyboard but with your palms on the desk. - Aaron D'Amico
One of the big problems with these new input technologies is that they require a lot of movement: a keyboard and mouse, though not perfect, are pretty efficient in terms of minimizing hand movements. Imagine swinging your hands around all day to write code: you'd be exhausted! - Ryan Twomey
Ryan - would you really be exhausted, or would you be getting a nice, healthy amount of exercise? Depends how large the movements need to be. If they can be natural and ergonomic, it might actually alleviate carpal tunnel risk while benefiting the body (DISCLAIMER - I didn't read the article yet!). - Laura Norvig

Just switched all our projects over to Redmine.org from basecamp. Will let you know how it goes...
I really like redmine more simple than trac - Sebastian Wain
I use Jira also. - imabonehead
how much time it takes to have jira running and setted up? - Sebastian Wain
Sebastian, I use the Jira Enterprise where I had to set it up in my own instance of Tomcat. It took several hours to install and configure it. So it varies on your skills and how you want to deploy Jira as it has many options. - imabonehead
I'm definitely a fan of RedMine, but my problem with it (and Trac) is that it tries to be too many things. At least with Basecamp and JIRA they are really good at one or two things. - Ryan Twomey
I like (and work for) nokahuna.com - that does defenitely not try to be too many things and is way simpler than TRAC and co.. - Alexander Kohlhofer
