funeral industry: But far from silly, the comments posted on Walmart's casket selection were creepy -- and creepiness, presumably, is not a trait Walmart wants its customers to see when they're choosing a burial option for a loved one. Before Walmart shut down the caskets' review section, Advertising Age documented a few of the reviews, like this one: I picked one up to bury my cat in. Other than having room for about 100 cats, it worked well. Oh, had to dig a really big hole too, and that was rough on my back. But at least when my dog dies I can just open 'er up again and stick him in too.

At the 2009 NFDA Convention Jeff Taylor (monster.com, and Tributes.com) gave a presentation titled “The Evolution of The Obituary”. I really wanted to attend the presentation but was unable to. Luckily for all of us who couldn't make it, Robin Heppell recorded the presentation and has uploaded it to FuneralFuturist.com. I watched the presentation last night and I am glad that I did. Jeff provided some very good information for the industry to digest. I was disappointed that there was a lot of promotion for Tributes.com, I didn’t think this would be the case. Aside from that I thought the presentation was very good. Below are some of my thoughts and a link to the video.

Funeral Industry - Walmart selling caskets. I think it is too early in the game to start bucking the fact that Walmart could have an effect on the casket sales in the US. Less than a month into there viral marketing campaign through Internet articles, and we have yet to go one day without having to hear about Walmart selling caskets. Will Walmart have an effect on the caskets sales in the US? I don't think we can say for sure, but I do think it needs to stay in the back of our minds as a concern. One thing we can do to slow the effect is continue to enforce the value of the funeral service. If there is one thing Walmart can't sell it is funeral service, and this is the most important part of the grieving process. Helping client families understand the value in the funeral service will lead them to seeing the value in the merchandise displayed at the service - devaluing the discount caskets found at WalMart. WalMart can NEVER match the value funeral directors provide families.

Summer for the funeral industry often means a slow down in business. When business is slow seeing employees just standing around can really get some owners in a panic. Why not take those employees standing around and put them to good use? Below I have put together a general Summer To-Do list that is sure to help them pass the down time usefully.

I read an article today that got me asking this question. Is it possible to be addicted to social networking? Could you live without logging into your Facebook page, or whatever social network you prefer, each day? How long do you have to be online before
