"Yes, it automatically opts them in. The phones that are located get a SMS that they are being tracked once you sign-up for the service and every time you locate the phone--so there's no spying/big brother aspects to it. People who don't want to share their location can opt-out through but they have to call or log into the website to do so after the service is first set-up. I'm guessing that his wife hasn't done this. The services are mainly for parents to keep track of their kids—but a lot of people keep them as a safety measure for exactly these kinds of situations."
