"The Calcutta Cup is a rugby union trophy awarded to the winner of the annual Six Nations Championship match between England and Scotland. It is currently held by England, who claimed the trophy by defeating the holders Scotland 26–12 at Twickenham in the 2009 Six Nations Championship on 21 March 2009."

Commentator: "What a feeling! What an atmosphere!" ... the commentator has clearly been listening to Russ Abbott recently.
- Mark H
I don't think you'll see a better match this tournament.
- Kol Tregaskes
I doubt it Kol. Unbelievable match. Unbelievable finished
- Roberto Bonini
I've got a problem now.. thinking that England were playing *today*, I said to Mrs T that we'd go out for the day tomorrow (Valentine's Day, blah blah)... Is feigning illness out of the question..?
- Andrew Terry
Ask her if you can swap days? Go today instead of tomorrow.
- Roberto Bonini
LOL, Andrew. Good luck with that. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
As long as I can watch the England/Scotland & England/France games, missing tomorrow's game won't be a problem! :)
- Andrew Terry
Anyone sticking around for the France/Ireland game? There's sure to be some fireworks after all the pre-match needle between the two teams!
- Andrew Terry
This'd be a great start for Ireland!!!
- Andrew Terry
Sin bin already, oh did. Here we go again!
- Kol Tregaskes
You know I remember a test italy played against south Africa about ten years ago at Kings park, Durban, South Africa. Italy lost 126-0. they have improved an aweful lot since.
- Roberto Bonini
Sorry for being late, but I'll try and post a thread for each weekend and see how things go.
- Kol Tregaskes
So far it's been good for Ireland though feel they've been a little slack and could have got more from the game. Italy have been very slow and I'm falling asleep watching them atm. Lucky try right at the end of the first half. 26-11 atm.
- Kol Tregaskes
Yep. My wee brother gave up watching it :)
- Roberto Bonini
Let's hope the second half and the Eng v Wal match will be better. Are you watching the Scotland match tomorrow, Roberto? :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Definitely.I'm getting the projector out ;)
- Roberto Bonini
currently watching England vs Wales Rugby, have no idea what's going on but I like it
- Kim Landwehr
Rugby is a great sport to watch, Kim. It's normally very exciting (though I hope you didn't see the Ireland vs Italy match earlier). My favourite sport to watch I would say. Football is good but it's more hit and miss and I'm really hating the play-acting that now plagues the sport.
- Kol Tregaskes
You know what would make this game more exciting? Lots of kicki... oh, never mind, they beat me to it.
- Mark H
Kol, I watched it once before and really liked it, however we don't get it over here very often so its hard to follow, fortunately BBC America is showing the England-Wales match today
- Kim Landwehr
Kim, we don't get the rules over here either. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Great work from Wales to deny England TWICE!!!
- Andrew Terry
Just look out for the tries (getting the ball over the opponent's line) or the goals (kicking the ball in between the opponent's posts). :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Good defending by Wales. England needed that try though with that amount of pressure or it might have been a rather depressed locker room right now.
- Mark H
what's the average score of a rugby game?
- Kim Landwehr
A shame England thought they were playing touch rugby for a moment. When we tackled at school it was below the knees or not at all. England obviously chose the latter option.
- Mark H
As the commentators said: squeaky bum time.
- Mark H
Kol, I know. I used to watch aussie rules quite a bit. I used to work with an aussie and I'm fairly sure he said football = rugby, soccer = football, and footy = aussie rules.
- Mark H
Well rugby's full title is "rugby football" (and football's full name is "association football") but it's no specific to Australia and like Shawn says I'm sure AFL is called "football" not "rugby" but please correct me if I'm wrong. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bumping for the Scotland v France match.
- Kol Tregaskes
HEY! It's Super Bowl Sunday! Take a backseat Rosbif
- sofarsoShawn
That French player didn't last very long, about 4mins on he's off!
- Kol Tregaskes
Yep. This is gonna be a good match. Scotland are attacking.
- Roberto Bonini

Thom, what did you think of their performance yesterday? Good result but not entirely impressed with them. Similar for England too.
- Kol Tregaskes
Yes, the Irish slept walked and stumbled thru their win. Their test is next against a clearly stronger French side (altho their defence is looking a bit porous today..) The English got a bit lucky on the stupid tripping foul - got half their points from it!
- Thom Kennon
Nah. Dont think it's being screened on terestial tv. Only satelite and cable.

(Was watching an HD stream of the aborted Shuttle launch this morning, and wondered why the BBC don't/can't provide an HD stream of events like the rugby. Anyone know?)
- Andrew Terry
Andrew, is it not on the BBC HD channel?
- Kol Tregaskes
Totally agree andrew. Bandwidth considerations?? Even a 720p stream chews up a lot of bandwidth.
- Roberto Bonini
from iPhone
Don't know, Kol - I don't have TV, so streams are my only option
- Andrew Terry
Are you watching the BBC one live stream?? Or do you just want a HD version of the stream?
- Roberto Bonini
from iPhone
Roberto - could be. I don't know how many viewers Spacevidcast had, but it's got to be a couple of thousand and their stream (via UStream) held up really well

I'll post a thread for a live chat in a sec, sorry a bit late today. Though the current match is a bit dull, Italy are so sloooowww. Lucky try at the end there.

I'm more a League fan than Union otherwise I'd make the effort to go but my sister-in-law will be at Twickenham today as she's a big England fan.

"Of course Brian O'Driscoll has a serious claim to being the Player of the Noughties, as do Martin Johnson, Jonny Wilkinson and the Kiwi double act of Dan Carter and Richie McCaw. All fabulous players, all highly influential, all first-class citizens in their way. They have shaped, or are shaping, sides in their image: committed, skilled, potent and capable of producing the X-Factor moment. No, you couldn't quibble with any of those contenders. But one man transcended even their achievements, managed to bend not only any given particular match to his will, but also to change the entire face of the sport in his country. It is not at all fanciful to declare that Agustin Pichot has been the player of this decade even if he does cede something to the likes of Carter or O'Driscoll in pure technical talent, in that hint of genius. Pichot's worth goes beyond a mere tick-list of abilities. For the sheer ferocity of his inner being, the unquenchable appetite for the contest, for his urgent passion, his awareness, his courage and his presence, Pichot has no equal."

After watching most of the game on tele just now, the English team look totally lethargic compared to the other Southern hemisphere teams. They have no pace in attack, absolutely no creativity, nobody challenging the defense. I bet the Wallabies are happy to be playing the Slam after such a bad Tri-nats. It makes them look good, lol.
- Will Higgins™
I also thought it was funny that a bbc news article said Wilkonson was AMAZING. Kicking 9 points is amazing? I suppose if you're used to English rugby maybe. Hey England, there's this guy named Dan Carter, recently returned too. He laughs at your 9 points. Especially in an international game so focused on kicking.
- Will Higgins™
I heard we had a lot of players out injured. Did we really miss them? Either way it shows we do not have depth in our squad.

"Argentina’s long push for inclusion in the southern hemisphere’s blue-ribbon tournament gained unstoppable momentum when they finished third in the 2007 World Cup, ahead of both New Zealand and Australia, despite the lack of regular international competition. SANZAR, the governing body of the Tri-Nations which is made up of representations from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, today made a conditional invitation to Argentina to join the tournament in three years’ time, although the move still has to be approved by the tournament’s broadcasters. “To have the Pumas join with the three top-ranked international teams in world rugby will be exciting for fans, players, sponsors and broadcasters across our four countries and beyond,” Andy Marinos, the SANZAR chief executive said. “They play a different style to the All Blacks, Springboks and Wallabies and their inclusion will see the Tri-Nations evolve to be a truly southern hemisphere championship.”"

"BUENOS AIRES, June 27 (Reuters) - Argentina's World Cup captain Agustin Pichot brought the curtain down on his playing career in emotional style on Saturday at CASI, the club where he started as a youngster. Pichot, who led the Pumas to a remarkable third place at the 2007 World Cup in France, played the last of his 72 tests in the 34-10 bronze-medal triumph over the hosts in Paris. The former Richmond and Bristol scrumhalf spent the post-World Cup season with French second-tier club Racing Metro 92 before being coaxed out of retirement by Stade Francais, the club he first joined in 2003 and with whom he won the title in 2004 and 2007. However, the 34-year-old was injured in April and decided to finally call it a day. "This celebration was for my friends not for me," a tearful Pichot told reporters after being carried off the CASI pitch on the shoulders of the players and surrounded by fans who poured on to the field. "There were about 80 friends here playing for the fun of it. I'll never forget it.""
