Robert: I've played with Wave and I wouldn't really put it in the same category as FriendFeed at the moment. It's not really about sharing and conversing in mass form IMO. Its really conversation with maybe 20 people or so but its much more difficult to focus conversations about shared content. Considering the free Google Wave protocol implementation and ejabbered work together, it shouldn't be too hard to quickly build a FF type service that's scalable. Combine that with EC2 and S3 and you could probably get a lot of runway before funding is needed. Robert, I think the next service you switch to should be part owned by you, considering I bet a lot of the traffic here was originated from you evangelizing.

Where will I go? Probably no where. Friendfeed was the first time I really got to feel like I found a home. Other places don't interact and blend multiple social services like Friendfeed does/did. Just as plenty of other people have said, I'm waiting for Google Wave at this point. I'm already a Google whore, might as well wait for the Wave to come through.

Bruce: data that goes out can be embedded on blogs and websites and interact with things. Also, if you get into Google's search engine you can get a LOT of traffic, which then you can monetize on your own service.

Robert: Hope you enjoy Wave! The UI is definitely way off for content sharing (at least in my first impression) and more suited for group communication for the very scenarios they threw out in the demos. Get much beyond that, or have too many people and the system starts to break down. Obviously, the underlying Wave infrastructure could be used to create something similar to and better than Friendfeed.

Mathew: Scoble said early on in this thread that he invests his time into emerging networks, not things that "are already here" I think thats why he will be moving on to the next big thing, like google wave or watchever new social network emerges out of this. Regarding the "team's plans", I really don't expect to hear anything from Bret, Paul, et al. At this point I'm happy to let the Facebook (i.e. the non-FriendFeed) folks try to convince me that they're ready to do things differently. That involves more than just hiring a team.

FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money!

My comment is because they can see by the flood of responses people are not happy and this post is just a smidge tacky. People are upset and feel betrayed and they haven't addressed that, not that I expected them too. This is pretty much inline with the way they've handled every other major change but before you only had a handful of disgruntles users whereas this time I'd say the majority are upset.

I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. It certainly could help takeup among young people - I'm just not sure if Twitter fits what they want though. Facebook is much better for the IM, photo and video sharing that most young people enjoy. Most teenagers I know use Twitter just to read what their favourite celebrities are doing.

IIRC, the am/pm for noon and midnight changes in different countries. I believe in Japan, noon is 12am.

Well the expansion of a.m. is ante meridiem (before midday) and p.m. is post meridiem (after midday), so it is a little odd to consider the time exactly at midday to be post meridiem. The other thing that's odd is that when noon comes around, you increment the hour and change the sign instead of resetting the counter. It would actually make more sense for the hour after 11am to be 12am, and the hour after 11pm to be 12pm. Or eliminate 12 entirely, and consider it 0.

one tip that you can use with the bulk uploader uploading in the wrong order. use the arrow keys on your keyboard to advance forward on the photos in the bulk uploader. If they go in the order that you want them it's fine. If they don't though quit the uploader, restart it and retry the arrows. It will almost always scroll in the order that you want them after you restart.

the thing is with flickr you always want to upload your five best last in any upload session and your very best last of all. This way your contacts at Flickr always see your best work. Now if only FF didn't post our Flickr photos in the *exact* opposite way, burying your last/best photos uploaded.

which browser or software do u use Thomas? I had some issues with Flickr uploads 2 in the past, the only way around it is upload a little batch, then do another batch. Its a pain when u have to do that with hundreds of photos.

I'm mostly using Firefox. I never upload with the browser though. I only use the Flickr bulk uploader which is buggy as hell. My biggest problems have been uploads not uploading in the order I specify (which can be fixed by checking in the uploader with the advance arrow keys before pushing upload) and the fact that the uploader frequently double posts images of mine. Occasionally it will hang or just die with some sort of XML error or something, but I can't imagine uploading from a browser.

So, curious - why not just do your uploading from your Mac then? Jeffrey Friedl's export plugins are excellent. As a bonus it'll even keep track of which photos have been uploaded as well as their Flickr URL from within Lightroom, and you can use smart collections to keep track of everything automagically. Too many really to rationally import into any reasonable photo software I think. I did try importing all into a copy of Lightroom once and while it worked, it was super sluggish. I know Thomas Hawk wants to take a 500,000 photos in his lifetime. Do you have any goals for number of photos you want to take a week, month, year? Or lifetime?

I'm not interested in these sorts of goals. Setting them and then failing just takes my concentration away from thinking about the images. It's too easy to take loads of photos without stopping long enough to actually plan the photo properly.

Felicia, we've tried to change FF so that the focus is on the conversation -- the content and the people writing it. On the whole, the service icons were quite confusing to new users, believe it or not. That said, there are a lot of strong opinions surrounding the redesign, and we're going to support skinning soon. I don't find it hard to believe the service icons were confusing, because the very idea of an activity aggregator is kinda confusing the first time you come across it. However, if that's what friendfeed is, then you kinda need to get the concept, otherwise people are just gonna use it like twitter.

But Victor, the whole thing is that not all sources _are_ equal and the new policy only makes it that much harder to grasp which posts are from less interesting sources. Earlier this morning Flickr and Getty Images announced the launch of their new joint stock photography offering called “The Flickr Collection.” “We are thrilled to provide our customers with this ground-breaking collection,” said Jonathan Klein, co-founder and chief executive officer of Getty Images. “We are impressed with the talent from the Flickr community, and are proud to once again lead our industry in this exciting new direction. We are eager to hear what our customers think, and look forward to their input in shaping this ever-expanding collection.” I haven’t had a good chance yet to try out the new service but thought I’d offer some of my thoughts on the service here. I just received an invitation from Getty Images to participate in the collection on 95 of my photos, but only yesterday, so I haven’t had a chance yet to either decide what to do or sign up for the service.

I just replied to you on Twitter re: this. Sounds like an interesting collaborative idea and I like the idea of extending the value of existing on-line content. I think the service has different implications to someone like yourself that participates in professional photography than me, as a happy snapper. But I like the theory. Will investigate further.

The more I learn about this partnership the more dumb I think it is. It completely misses the point and the value of a community site like Flickr. This is basically just Getty going through and hand picking photographers, which they could have done anyway and gives no real value added to either Flickr members or potential buyers.

I tend to agree with EricP. This simply seems like a publicity stunt for Getty. They are getting a lot of press because they are 'teaming' with Flickr. If they had simply found and contacted individual photographers they liked on Flickr, there would have been little to no buzz. The net result for the photographer and photo buyer is the same either way. The Flickr community is not being embraced by Getty, they are just being used.

Congrats Thomas! Have to agree with Eric & Jeff though. Being a designer, I've bought from Getty over the years, when it was first announced I thought it was nothing more than a publicity stunt, they didn't need to partner. Partnering buys them nothing except publicity as far as I can tell.

I read that now when u join Flickr, u r automatically joined to Getty collection, unless u go turn the option off, which u can, so Flickr-ers read between the lines.

Louis seems to be a patient guy. Scoble too. 2 years waiting for Google Reader features. Glad y'all are there to push the envelope. Make sure to keep on the various services for data portability. I want to export my stuff or want to be able to export my stuff more easily and in different formats. They can have a copy. But I want to be able to manage a copy of my own content and attention information as well.

I love Google Reader, but given the number of users and feeds it has and the smarts of the team it should be able to: 1) Tell me what other items in my feeds link to the same story: help me manage my attention. 2) Support smart folders: Outlook and Newsgator have 'em. Gmail (via Quick Links) does too. Why not Reader? 3) Search unread items: you can search read items now, but not unread. I want to be able to say search for all items about X and mark them as read. What else?

I would like it to de-duplicate posts that somebody shares which I am already subscribed to. They should mention "this has been shared by ...." on one instnace of the post instead of showing me the post N number of times.

Steve already mentioned it. But filtering items linking to the same story would be great. I'm getting annoyed when there is one story going around and every blog or website seems to write a post on it. But I know new other reader which is able to do this. Would be really a time saver.

I love Google Reader. I would like to be able to choose my page view. When I click to read an article the page is adapted for mobile phone, I would like to view in HTML. I know of no way to change this. It would be nice to be able to choose.

I also love reader, but I would *love* to be able to setup rules to mark feeds with certain tags read once they become so old. For instance, I have feeds tagged as news and news-slow. Anything in news is stale after about 6 hours, anything in news-slow after about 2 days. I want to setup those preferences in Reader and have it mark those items as read for me, because going through yesterday's breaking news is a pain in the neck.

My guess is that google has hired the founder of delicious to try to do something big and consistent around tagging and bookmarking. Something that could tie together Chrome, Android, Google Bookmarks, Google Reader. At least this is what I am hoping. The fragmentation is pretty painful for the end user.

greader and gmail should merge. Both emails and feeds are easy to manage and access with the help of filters and labels. Email is a good tool to share with a wide variety of social networks.

the shared items doesn't have the proper rss feed format. Can't use it elsewhere without it getting all monkeyed up.. Also a mark as unread option. Themes seems a direction it should soon incorporate. A piping feature like Yahoo Pipes offers.

one of my most desired options is to be able to sort my feeds by unread count, regardless of what folders they're in... so I get just a big list of all the feeds I'm subscribed to in order from feeds with 1 or 2 unread stories all the way to the feeds with 1000+ unread - I mentioned this to Edwin at Feedly and he seems keen to add into their product soon: http://getsatisfaction.com/feedly... - It's amazing to me that Google Reader doesn't offer that option already.

Getting the duplicate stories out will be a little tough - especially if the feed you subscribe to doesn't link back to their source - but it can definitely be done... would just have to do some regex/fuzzy logic-type querying of post title, content, and outbound links on the page to determine a percentage of similarity. You could then have a similarity threshold slider to adjust your "duplicate filter".
