I think I'm in love. The Olympus EP-1 is almost erotically beautiful. I can't stop handling it. Can't wait to get the 50/1.4 on it. Too bad nothing reads the raw files yet.

time to sell the 5D on ebay.... - John Hillestad
Why does each new camera need a new RAW format requiring a 'driver update' ? - Don Strickland
Geez. Kind of a problem if nothing reads RAW. Can't imagine shooting any other way. - Karoli
No bundled app that can handle the RAW files? So you can at least have them for storage and go from there until ACR, etc. handle Olympus' RAW format... - Holger Eilhard
It is a very good-looking camera. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Here's the thread in the LR forums about EP-1 support: http://forums.adobe.com/message... - Holger Eilhard
The bundled app handles the ORF files, of course, but I really need Lightroom. - Leo Laporte
I understand that, using LR myself! :-) I'm just suggesting that you could still shoot RAW and let the bundled app take care of the conversion to JPEG until Adobe/Apple are ready. Then you still have the RAW files to play with, not just JPEGs that came from the camera. - Holger Eilhard
Okay but can I have the Canon 5D Mark II then :-) - Richard Bitting
Exactly what I'm doing - and shooting RAW+JPEG. Still an awesome camera. (Keeping the 5D though!) - Leo Laporte
Hope other manufacturers get a clue that we little rangefinder like cameras with interchangeable lenses. - Jon Winters
I won't give up my Nikon any time soon but that surely is a beautiful- and traditional-looking camera. - Akiva Moskovitz
I want this camera sooo bad. How are the HD videos on it? - tomit
The 720p video is excellent. You can see an example at http://leolaporte.smugmug.com/gallery... - Leo Laporte
Sorry, Leo. Yes, it looks very cool, but I am not aroused by looking at a camera. - Fleagle
Incidentally - NO rangefinder. You have to use the LCD. One real negative. - Leo Laporte
Fleagle - you have to hold it to be aroused. - Leo Laporte
Here is the direct link to Leo's video http://leolaporte.smugmug.com/gallery... - Bryan Lee
Leo: thats a cute Papillon BTW. - Bryan Lee
Papillon's are such great little dogs. We have 2. - tomit
I'll shoot some more dynamic video later. Saves as a Motion JPEG AVI file. - Leo Laporte
How long can the videos be? - tomit
2GB (that's an AVI limitation) so HD: 7min, SD: 14min - Leo Laporte
Ouch thats short! - Bryan Lee
Hmmm... Guess you can do multi shots with a large card and put them together. I think most videos I've done were made up of clips shorter than that. - tomit
Leo, there is an accessory VIEWfinder that attaches to the hotshoe. Not the same as a rangefinder but I wouldn't trade the EP-1's physical size for the optics necessary for a rangefinder. Very lustworthy bit of kit! - Antonio Yon
It's definitely pretty sweet hardware. Rumor going around that 2nd version will be out end of year with a VF. Seems rather quick to me but possibly something to wait for. The current VF that attaches to the hotshoe is only accurate with their 17mm f/2.8 lens btw. - ronin
I may pull the trigger on an EP-1, but I am hearing horror stories about the slow auto focus. Are you finding this a problem? Should I wait till version 2? - tomit
Is this the one Dvorak sings about? - Michael Foey
The specs for the E-P2 are out. What do you think? Are the improvements worth the extra $300? Luckily, the announcement came out the day was going to purchase the E-P1. Close call. - Robert Eden
The E-P2 at least has a viewfinder - I think that alone would make it much superior. - Brian Sullivan
I want to use one next to a Panasonic GF1 to see which I like better. - tomit
Curious if Leo thinks the upgrade to the E-P2 is worth the extra cash! - Robert Eden

Who needs GMail to work if you can send your contacts in FriendFeed messages and share files as attachments?

Maybe the reason why Twitter succeeds is because people don't really want to have conversations. They just want to be able to scream out into the void and listen for echoes.

"Twitter succeeds is because people don't really" .... have anything to say LOL "They just want to be able to scream out into the void and listen for echoes." - Lora Lufark
But doesn't FF and Twitter have different purposes. FF for posting something and having a meaningful or somewhat meaningful conversation. Twitter post something that you want to push out to others and not really have a conversation. Different purposes, different apps. Can't we all just get along. :-) - David Fowler
Heh, David. But that's the thing. I actually think trying to make conversations easier on Twitter is counter productive. Two-way conversation is not the purpose most of its users actually use it for. - Victor Ganata
Victor, I agree, I think a lot to tweets are designed to drive traffic to websites and not just mindless chatter. Which to me is a great use of Twitter. It is very easy to miss portions of a conversation on Twitter. But not here. - David Fowler

Ridiculous statement of the day: Jeff Pulver tells NYTimes that for AT&T Google Voice is a much bigger threat than Skype. Seriously?
There are business threats all over the place. Not many people want to see Google mounting a challenge to their business model. - David Damore
US Telecoms are a $150 Billion industry. Google is about to disrupt that. - Charbax
Perhaps Google is to Skype as search is to content producers? Content producers create value but its Google that sits at the center of the web, clicking mandibles, and collecting rents from whomever steps onto a silken thread. - Todd Hoff
Perhaps Todd, but the thing is that Google Voice for all its niceties is still a curiosity and it will remain so because as a company Google will face the innovator's dilemma of "search" and other business. I don't think they will ever be able to overcome their own fears. - Om Malik from email
Sure.... Also, someone said that google is going to disrupt a $150 billion telecom industry. Well that was disrupted with the IP networks. I think to think Google can do it all is childish. After today they will go on the defense with their search-and-advertising business. I refuse to believe (without proof) that they can do well in a competitive market place. - Om Malik from email
Wait, what fears don't you think Google will ever be able to overcome? - Matt Cutts
Matt... I think we have argued about this before. :-) So at the sake of repeating myself, why should I believe that Google Voice (and Google Wave) going to take over the world. Just because Google says so? The real world success is yet to happen -- first signs of that are yet to happen. And when that happens we can have a nice conversation - over Fraiche with Scoble as referee. - Om Malik
Ah.... I love FF for having a way to expand my last Twitter reply. The ridiculous depends on the temporal view. In the US market -a- CLEC for Google Voice is Level 3. Today. Now, imagine DID deprecation. *BOOM* Yes, that's right. All the weight that ENUM has never had could have with the flip of switch that AOL mouthed for years with limited take. Leverage applied to the millions of accounts as a "by the way" menu item is the kind of latent functionality we may see. The war of endpoints is yet to come. - Jay Cuthrell
1. Google releases Android, the absolute best OS ever 2. Google sets up free wireless broadband using White Spaces (deployed cheaply worldwide using the FON model) 3. Android phones/Tablets and Chrome OS Laptops on White Spaces means the end of Telecoms and ISPs. All this can happen in the matter of a few months. - Charbax
Charbax.... I think you would *like" it to happen :-) but that doesn't mean it would happen. As they say, in a matter of months I could star in a blockbuster movie. Except it isn't happening any time soon. :-D - Om Malik
As for Google Wave, it changes the way we work, communicate, collaborate. Effectively replacing email, blogging, im, word processing, web browsing, feed reading, microblogging, even changes the way we search. Puts twitter and facebook instantly out of business. - Charbax
4. The nice day at the telecom park picnic runs smack into Congressional, FCC, and FTC quagmire that makes up the US market's very own colony of ants. All circuits are busy. Please try your call again later. - Jay Cuthrell
Telecoms are backwards and lack the ability to innovate. They have grown fat, not having to compete. Apple came in and created the App Store, something the walled garden telecoms could have done at any time. I don't have confidence in Google so much as I have no faith in telecom. - Todd Hoff
Okay Om... no hits. http://www.imdb.com/find... What's your stage name? - Jay Cuthrell
When they activate overlay advertising for anyone who wants it on their uploads to Youtube (not just a few beta testers so-called "Partners"), they will be taking over Hollywood and the TV networks as well. The GigaOm show automatically becomes a blockbuster. - Charbax
From your mouth to god's ears' If that happens we all be rolling like rock-stars. - Om Malik from email
Jay I miss the point. Sorry it is indeed late for me :-) - Om Malik from email
Om, I don't recall Google saying that Google Voice would take over the world. Since I've been using Voice, I've found 2-3 killer features for me. The ability to pick a great phone number. The ability to record a call easily (I've already used this a lot) and get an MP3 of the call. And the ability to mark calls as spam--then future calls from that number get an "out-of-service" tone.... more... - Matt Cutts
Om - no worries... late for me as well. I just realized you are using email vs. the FF web interface. My context was the "star in a blockbuster movie" reference. - Jay Cuthrell
haha... well if it happens I am going to send you premiere tickets. :-) good night buddy - Om Malik from email
Matt - Google Voice is collectively raising the bar of expectation for every other enhanced voice service out there. Many Google Voice features are associated with small nimble voice appliance companies as well as hosted IP centrex services. However, most are tied to silos of authentication or realms (enterprise). My view? VoIP is a race to zero commodity. Just as the charge for email market has seen rapid adjustment in value/price in the wake of Gmail, Google Voice will similarly impact voice markets. - Jay Cuthrell
jay just to be clear, the email market was down to zero a long time ago. Google just changed the game from a storage stand point. I think you are right about Google Voice commoditizing voice minutes, but that has already happened. Nothing new there. I just think it is going to be much harder for Google to get traction than most think. - Om Malik from email
Sure -- the email storage play is prominent but... I'm less interested in SIP O/T as much as the feature sets exposed for free by Google Voice. It's that blend of features that have formed something of a last hope for appliance and centrex solution providers as a licensed key or allowance in a bundle. Google Voice sets that feature set on that same approaching zero path. Don't forget that Gmail blended spam and virus filtering, POP/IMAP, and other premium features in a free bundle -- much more impacting. - Jay Cuthrell
As for traction -- total agreement. Highly overt and persistent appearance of Voice buttons on everything that is a web property would be a nice start down the path --- but it's a mobile handset world. - Jay Cuthrell
Maybe it's because eBay somehow managed to not buy all of Skype: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive... - Joel Webber
I'd say it's because GV can also be introduced to customers already using other Google services at minimal advertising cost... "would you like to add a phone number to your Gmail?". GV customers probably won't churn like Skype customers; GV can keep them around w/ other strong services they can't leave like Gmail, Google contacts, sign-on, etc. GV > Skype in those regards. - Wade Dorrell
Pulver knows a thing or two about voice. - Jim Peake

Holden, although I understand your spirit there... how does the extra $100 change your life? In my opinion, $200 is the same as $400 in the same way that $1700 is the same as $2100. Do you work five more hours at your job or 10 more? It's non-consequential. What makes the difference is does this become something you need, and will you pay for it? - Louis Gray
Goes from a no-brainer at $200 to a "ehh... do I REALLY need it?" at $400. - ronin
I like it--moving us closer to the world where paper is quaint, antique, a hobby. The problem with the price moving ever higher seems to be that it starts to enter the realm where one could just buy a little laptop. Why this and not that? - Kathy Fitch
I agree with both points. $200 is the sweet spot although they'd probably hemorrhage losses for a while. But $400 isn't a terribly large chunk of change when it comes down to it. Think of the Kindle. That only does print material (and a small selection at that) primarily. This does web only. The web opens a lot more opportunities than a book reader. - Zach Flauaus
And as the price keeps going up, it's going to have to be something really special if Apple really are unleashing the iTablet soon... #Inevitable-iTabletComment - Andy Bold
$400 means it's competing with netbooks and low-cost notebooks - a crowded market if ever there was one. - invariant - farewell FF

I love the "the rumored apple tablet will kill it" stuff. Does anyone remember how long Apple's been rumored to be about to release a slate/tablet/umpc/netbook/tablet PC? - Joel Bennett
I would like one, but US$400 is NZ$700, so if Apple tablet comes in at rumoured US$800, then NZ$1400 is way out of most peoples league - hate it. - Geer
I'm a bit surprised of no Bluetooth in the specs. The lack of BT for keyboard and A2PD plus the price hike really has limited my lust for this device. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
SGD575. Hmm.. Now that I have the iPhone, I wonder if I really need this? Hmm.. - Winston Teo
For $400 USD I think its a great price - Nicholas James
$400 USD is to top of the price point that I believe most people will be willing to pay for a device that will be used to surf the web while watching TV. As any new product, including the yet to be announce Apple iTablet, the price will go down after the initial release and the TechCrunch gets some of its R&D back. I wouldn't be shocked to see the price drop to $350 after 3 or 4 months. - Casey Russell

In my experience Archbishop Nichols is dead wrong that "social networking websites" undermine community http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol...
The archbishop is totally wrong. But I have never met him at any of the hundreds of meetings I have been at. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
The Archbishops are nearly always out of date and threatened by new technology. - Sally Church
Well, considering the 'community' use to be heavily structured around a church, this has little to do with social networks and more about people seeking connection outside a institution that they no longer feel is super-relevant. I guess you can't pass the collection plate around on Facebook :) - Johnny Worthington
Like Robert, I think the Archbishop is dead wrong. The internet is extending our community and helping us extend our connections to friends and friends-to-be through time and space. That an Archbishop is decrying social networking probably guarantees that social networking is here to stay. I bet that Archbishops were warning against the harm the printing press would wreak on learning, too, back in the day. - Jason Miller
Perhaps the point is not coming out very well: the type of community life he is referring to is not what we see today. A key word is "transient". Face to face, small community, porch society, church-bound communities of times past made it harder to "delete" someone off your "friend" list in the time it takes today to click your mouse. A lot of factors are involved here and the space... more... - Melanie Reed
It will be very easy to test the validity of what he is saying: watch what happens to the quality and concept of loyalty in the years ahead. Will it wane? will it become obsolete? He's saying he sees that now. What happens in a society when loyalty is no more? - Melanie Reed
It's funny, friends of mine I met via Twitter in San Antonio go to @ImagineChurch which incorporates Twitter and other online means to connect people. That's just one example of online community blending into Real Life connections- I can say without a doubt I've connected with my community more via online means than any other. - Robert J Taylor from iPhone
Melanie, I think I understand what you're trying to say: the Archibishop's position is more nuanced. However, social networking technology is giving us a social mobility that's not much different from that given us by cars. But it's better because it helps keep us connected to our communities, so long as those communities are online. - Jason Miller
Jason, yes, you got it. His position is nuanced on the foundational. I am particularly interested as I am a "constant" if you will in scientific terms. ;) You see, most of my relationships by necessity and through circumstance (not of my choice) have been online since I am mainly home bound. I was not always home bound. I have been able to make some rather interesting observations about how people act in regard to what they consider "friendship" when you are not mobile. - Melanie Reed
What the archbishop is also implying is that we are missing our chances for (propinquity) and are sensing the loss of affection attendant to that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... in our social media world. That "lonely in a crowd" feeling almost everyone has experienced at some point in their lives, if not more often than they would like even now. - Melanie Reed
Good point, Melanie, I've experienced being "lonely in the crowd" before - usually at formal liturgical worship services. I've made real connections with people online since mid-80s with BBSes and CompuServ. Today's so-called Social Media is just the latest permutation. - Robert J Taylor from iPhone

@rackcloud @scobleizer I signed up for a Rackspace Cloud Site Friday and my experience with customer service was anything but 'fanatical' It's was horrible. Xbox 360 or ps3? and why?
July 31 from iPhone - Comments disabled - Share
XBox better gaming (library & quality) - sofarsoShawn
360. Better library. Better online offerings. Cheaper price. - Alex Scoble
This would have been a pretty descent fight a year or two ago. I jsut cant justify recommending a PS3 ATM.Show me a 150 dollar price drop and we can talk. - Geoff Schultz
My roommate is looking to get one right now. I don't have an opinion either way so I'm useless - tinypants - Hagitha of FF from iPhone
Yep I probably agree with the others, PS3 is still waaay overpriced probably because of the built-in Blu-Ray player.. but if you want Blu-Ray, this might be good.. should price just the Blu-Ray players too. - Ken
360, XBL remains unparalleled. - Adi
But personally, I think all Blu-Ray is overpriced, the movies and players. - Ken
Xbox ++ with integration into your home theatre and storage - sofarsoShawn
Don't forget that they have Blu-Ray burners now for the computer.. not for TV yet though. This is just like when DVD players were new, took years for a TV recorder. - Ken
Y'all rock. :D Game recommendations? - tinypants - Hagitha of FF from iPhone
why not both? just out of curiosity. I thought they both dropped down prices to reasonably cheap. Then again, I haven't been looking at their prices since they came out... - John Wang
We would never use both. Just kind of a waste of resources. Rather spend the money on more games for one - tinypants - Hagitha of FF from iPhone
Here is the rundown.. Walmart.com $399 for their cheapest PS3 game kit. $199 for XBox 360. Amazon.com: $399 for PS3 kit, XBox 360: $299... although I don't know if it's the same hard drive as the Walmart one.. I really hate how there's so many different kinds and they throw in tons of games and junk to jack up the prices incredibly. - Ken
BTW for games I'd recommend that you try a Gamefly account where they mail games to you at least for a few months to find some quality games. A two games at one time account will cost you like $23 a month. - Alex Scoble
Xbox360 - better online gaming and more community features. And better exclusives. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Patrick says they both have their advantages (he has both): for online Xbox is better. For quieter fan and Blu-Ray Playstation is better. Game choice? For him that doesn't matter between the two platforms. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
We have both, plus Wii, and some vintage systems. The boy child is into it! - Kathy Fitch
I used to have a 360, a PS3, and a Wii, all when they first came out. Got rid of all three of them in a short matter of time when I decided I just didn't like any of the game offerings (plus I'm not much of a console gamer these days). So I just didn't have the knowledge to really give my roomie a good opinion. My gut was to advise the 360; glad to see everyone else agreed. :D - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
WoW destroys lives. - Geoff Schultz
360. Indie Games (is changing over from previous name "Community Games") is an "app store" for XBox; there are a lot of creative & very cheap titles on that channel developed & reviewed by the community. Online story is solid, with Facebook & Twitter integration coming which should be interesting, and the free (to Live subscribers) MMO live gameshow 1 vs. 100. It's cheap. - Wade Dorrell
Wii, because it's very accessible to my three year old, my mother, my wife, and any friends who decide to come over and hang out. The other consoles fail in at least one of these regards - I got rid of 'em. - Trent Hamm
xbox 360 because of the game library and xbox live. PS3 menu is not very intutive. - Phani J
Thankfully I don't have anyone under the age of 18 or over the age of 60 visit my house, so the 360 meets those needs. Besides, I have a MAME cabinet for those folks that can't handle console gaming. "What's that, grandma? Can't handle getting pwned by 12yr olds on Halo 3? Here, play some Centipede...with the ball even..." - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I don't know. - Ian May
Oh you'll love this. The non-paying mooch temp roommate? Totally unpacked the 360 and unwrapped all the games while my roommmate and I were eating dinner. WITHOUT ASKING. Now we're pretending we're occupied with other things and delaying the hookup of the system. Just to teach him a lesson. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
temp? hasn't he been there for like 4 months at this point? - B. Hatin
8, actually. I still call him "temp" because he's still living here for free, only chipping in for toilet paper now and then. I keep praying he'll actually attempt to help with a chore or two, but it doesn't look like it's ever going to happen. I just hope he finds someone else to mooch off of soon... - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
My reasons to get a PS3: It plays DVD's already, free online, Ratchet & Clank. PS3 WIN - Outsanity
You mean it plays Blu-Ray...360 plays DVDs too. - Alex Scoble
There's already 2 Blu-Ray players in the house. :) That's always been a moot point for me. You'll be happy to know though that the Roommate is already talking about going back to the store and buying a PS3 as well. Just because. Dude loves his technology. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
360, nicer community features, more friends, better price, better games. - Jan Ole Peek
360 - because i won it at devconnections and all my friends now have one. Live is pretty slick as well. - Steve Long
Really hard to decide just like mac vs pc. - ashish from iPhone
PS3 cos i got one for free. use it for music and as a blu ray player. i need to upgrade the hard drive. - Joe Silence is not Santa
Another reason to get a PS? Our XBox died with red ring of death a couple of weeks ago. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
PS3 plays blu ray and DVD and CD and data CDs and oogabooga yadder yadder wheeehaaa bloo bloo blah POIT! - Joe Silence is not Santa
WRONG Robert! Nice try though. The fact that your first gen Xbox 360 died, should have ZERO bearing on buying a CURRENT generation 360 vs a CURRENT generation PS3. The latest hardware revision does not have the red rings of death problem. PLUS! Microsoft gives you a 3 year warranty if it does happen. Red rings of death is a straw man argument. - Alex Scoble
And so it begins...;) - Adi
MORTAL WOMBAAAAT!!! - Joe Silence is not Santa
Boing Boing - sofarsoShawn
Oh yeah... You can swap out the HD of a PS3 with a SSD - http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Outsanity
1 vs 100 and the Netflix party viewing preview is sweet. - Rodfather
PS3 because of the BluRay player.. - Peter
Xbox 360, better games, cheaper, far better online service. PS3 just needs to be cheaper and sort out its online service to compete. - Kol Tregaskes
And why the heck would you want to swap the HD with an SSD? Why don't you have it gold plated while you are at it. - Alex Scoble
Why a SSD? Shock resistant. - Steven Perez
@Steven Perez I think failures not being fixable cheaply because of voided warranty > prevention of failure through better shock resistance. Now, gold plating, that's an investment & it looks damn good. - Wade Dorrell
PS3 for me as I got one free. I have too little experience of the X Box, just used on occasionally. - Stuart Betts
If you got it for free then that kind of helps. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Both... :) PS3 for Blueray and Xbox360 for Netflix. Either one gives the network video streamg capabilities. Oh don't they play games too? Lol! - Walt Ruppar from iPhone
Can anyone comment on the 360 Netflix resolution and compression? Is it HD? If not, is it even really as good as a physical DVD? - LogEx
I haven't seen any HD over the 360 from Netflix, it's hard to find it since tehy don't seem to label what's HD and what isn't. - Gunny doesn't side-hug™
All the 30 Rock episodes are in HD. In general the picture quality is pretty good on Netflix instant as long as you have a REALLY GOOD (read that as FiOS) internet connection. - Alex Scoble
It's so funny, because everyone's recommending the systems for the things they do beside playing games. I guess I failed to mention that the chances of the 360 (or even a PS3 for that matter) being used for anything other than gaming in this house are slim-to-none. We already own other components that do the same thing. None of us have any interest in using a console for anything more... more... - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
@Gunny Heroes (any season) is HD over Netflix instant watch in our area. (I say our area because I am not certain how the CDN works.) @Logical I don't know the techincal specifics, but Heroes over Netflix instant watch looks crisper than DVD for us. I don't do Blu-Ray or HDDVD, so I can't compare to those. - Wade Dorrell
Netflix streaming is stereo only though so for movies it won't sound nearly as good as a DVD. - Alex Scoble
I dislike Netflix and never use it. It feels wasteful to have HBO/Showtime/Starz and then spend money renting movies. I'm an either/or person. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
You don't need FiOS to get good quality over Netflix, you need a good connection yes, but it's fine over my standard Comcast hookup. I don't understand "disliking" Netflix, especially when you cna pick up a one disc subscription and have Starz on streaming for probably less than you pay to add it to your cable right now, but its your choice. For gaming, still, 360. - Richard Lawler
Because I just don't like Netflix. I don't like renting movies. Period. Never have. And it gets tiring to have people jerking off Netflix in my face all the time like it's an answer to something and then acting incredulous when I say I don't like it. I have a TiVo, I have a full DirecTV subscription, and if I get itchy for something, I guess I *could* pull a download from Netflix or Amazon Unboxed, but that hasn't happened yet, so I'm not pining for it. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Yep, for gaming, still 360. See my previous comments about online, Indie Games, & coming Facebook integration (integration w/ games, it's not just a Facebook client.) The plastic-disc game selection is great as well; although it's tough to say whether the exclusive releases on PS3 or 360 are better, and the techincal quality of games is too-close-to-call. - Wade Dorrell
My lad loves the 360 ;o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I don't understand not liking renting. If you like "watching" movies, it's exactly the same whether you're streaming them or watching them on HBO/Showtime/Starz. You pay for access, then you watch movies from their pool of available flicks for the time period. it's exactly the same thing. - Richard Lawler
Amanda, I'm with you on the Netflix thing (had a gift sub a long time ago though)... DirecTV and a DVR does it for me (and purchasing movies I want to keep). Netflix-by-mail doesn't solve the impromptu desires, and I'm a A/V quality nut and streaming just doesn't cut it for me. - LogEx
I just don't like renting and I'm not sure why that's a problem for you to understand. I just. Don't. Like. Renting. Movies. PERIOD. The difference between having a premium movie service on satellite/cable and renting a movie is that I don't get a say in what shows on the movie service, and so I end up discovering films I probably would have never watched had I been given a Netflix... more... - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
You're open to have your own preference and do what you like, the problem is it doesn't make any logical sense. Saying you wouldn't discover movies on Netflix is a weird stance to take, but since you've never tried it, you probably don't know how easy it actually is, especially with streaming making more movies available to you, but again, you haven't tried it. Not wanting to put a used disc in your player is just nuts. - Richard Lawler
I also don't like the restrictions on the streaming movies and the online (and satellite/cable) rentals... watch it within 24 hours or it evaporates? Ludicrous! - LogEx
I also see the used disc issue... you wait for a week to get this thing, then a scratch destroys the whole viewing experience. - LogEx
Actually, no. Arguing with me about why I won't accept the shining light of Netflix's love into my life is nuts. This is the internet. Do you not have better things to do? And Richard, you assume that I've never tried Netflix. I said "I never use it". Never said I'd never tried it. And I didn't say there wouldn't be movie discovery on Netflix. I said that "I end up discovering films I... more... - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I didn't tell you had to have netflix, I said your reasons for not doing it make no sense. If you've tried it and don't know how it works, then your ignorance is even more confusing. The only person talking about a "shining light" here is you. If you think arguing on the internet is such a waste of time, why are you doing it? I'm just putting correct information out there. - Richard Lawler
Putting correct information out there? Not really. What you're doing is mocking me for my decision to not fly the Netflix flag. You made the decision to pick up the one comment I said "I dislike Netflix and never use it" and start an argument over it. I'm just defending myself here. You are the one who continues to come back and tell me how wrong my opinion and preference is. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I said I don't understand it. I can do that. If you think being corrected = mocking, then that's an entirely separate issue. I didn't start an argument, I recommended a system for gaming. Hell, I was here to respond to Alex's comment. BTW, Alex Scoble is so wrong about FiOS being required for HD streaming. I don't understand why he would say that </ mocking> - Richard Lawler
Being corrected? You're telling me that my personal preference makes no sense. That's not being corrected. That's you be a tool. I don't need to explain every facet of my life to you that has informed my decision to go the route that I have instead of going with Netflix. There are several other factors that play into my decision that I'm sure may make what I'm saying make more sense,... more... - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
No, I said your reasons for it don't make any sense. There's a difference. You don't have to discuss anything. I'd assume that if you were, it's because you want to. There's a whole world of other topics to cover. - Richard Lawler
Precisely. So let's do me a solid here and move along so I can continue discussing the 360 with others. In fact, nevermind. I'm closing comments here and starting a new thread where I can have a reasonable discussion with others on the merits of 360 games and online gaming. Thx. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF

Google Voice is an interesting reason, but not enough to really make a dent. I mean most people still have home phone numbers instead of just using their mobile. In a year or so this might be a good reason, but right now it won't have any significant effect besides more negative sentiment for AT&T. - Tony from iPhone
True, in itself, it's not a big deal. I think the precedent that Apple is setting is the deal-breaker...maybe for me, too. It was tolerable when they rejected the tethering app. It was palatable when they rejected various browsers. But rejecting Google Voice when other VOIP apps are still around is a clear dictatorship. Archos 9 Tablet will be better than apple for sure at $499 http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Charbax
If you didn't already have an iPhone (and therefore didn't have to worry about use case duplication) would you feel the same? - Tech Introvert from iPod
I'm debating the same thing, but not Crunchpad vs. Apple Tablet, but Mountain Dew Cough Drop vs. Charbroil Laptop. - Eric Rice
Tech Introvert, the iPhone absolutely changed how I get Internet on the go. A tablet, from anyone, won't fit in the pocket, and neither makes phone calls. In terms of duplication, the tablet would replace the laptop more frequently than the iPhone, I believe - unless it were 3G only and didn't have WiFi. (we'll find out!) - Louis Gray
If it has wi-fi (CrunchPad)--I'll get one to hang on the wall in most of the rooms of my house. - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
I think I'll hold off until there's anything more than vague prototypes or vaporware for either one. - Trent Hamm
Trent, I too will hold off from buying either until we have more info. :) - Louis Gray
I'd rather take a DeLorean than a phone booth as my time machine ;) - Rodfather
I would get irritated if I scratched a CrunchPad, but I would definitely be upset if I did it to a more expensive device like the Apple Tablet. I always thought a Cloud computer should be inexpensive; making it disposable. The only thing wrong with the Apple Tablet is the price. This is a wait and see situation anyway! - Michael Fidler
i would really like a proper, if a little expensive smaller MB, i'd get that. chuck a iphone based OS on it, im sure they could make a ten inch version... - Terry O'Fee
I saw Steven Hodson's piece before I saw this one, and hadn't even considered the potential fragility of a large Apple device. I know nothing of the CrunchPad, but wonder if "web only" will be enough of a game-changer. - John E. Bredehoft from fftogo
I am seriously thinking of bringing the crunchpad in as a student tool, it just makes sense since everything they need is going to be online anyways. At 300 I can deck out a student with everything they need at the school, apple tablet (depending) distant second, But got approval to purchase 20 crunchpads when they come out for beta testing. Couldn't want this puppy more. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag

The tipping point: iPhone users turn against AT&T | Wireless News - Betanews
"The iPhone crowd has turned into an anti-AT&T mob. Spend 30 seconds on Twitter or perform even the most basic search for iPhone and AT&T information and you're sure to run into some serious rancor from disgusted iPhone users across the country. While the exclusive partnership between Cupertino and the Dallas teleco has never been perfect, user hostility has lately been at a fevered pitch. In February of this year, prominent blogger Om Malik announced he was "breaking up" with his iPhone. "I love my iPhone -- but AT&T's network has failed me. Apparently I'm not alone. If you follow me on Twitter, then you know how often I complain about it; my complaints always result in me receiving similar messages of frustration from other iPhone users. A status update on my Facebook page on the topic unleashed a flood of messages from people expressing abhorrence of AT&T's service."" - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
How is it that there are places in San Francisco where I can literally get no iternet service on my iPhone from AT&T? No 3G, No Edge, No nothing. Or why is it that when driving over the Bay Bridge my wife's 3G phone shows a 3G signal but my newer fancier 3GS phone defaults to Edge in the exact same vehicle? AT&T's service sucks. Having to reboot your phone just to get it to try and get a better signal is frustrating as hell as much as I love my iPhone. - Thomas Hawk
Because as I've said several times before, AT&T doesn't have the infrastructure in place in most areas. They are still working on upgrading their own and Cingular's old infrastructure. Last year when talking to AT&T engineers, most of them said that they use T-Mobile or Sprint at their main phone. One client tends to switch to whatever carrier he's working for at the time. He's been a contractor for AT&T for a year and is very disappointed. He has no coverage within 30 miles of his house. - Admiral Anika
One of the biggest WTF moments in telecom was when Apple announced the partnership with AT&T. It wasn't just that the infrastructure wasn't there, it was who won the contract nationwide. Trade magazines predicted users would be upset within the first year because of this, while touting the phone at the same time. Even at the beginning of this year, RCR (now defunct) had articles urging... more... - Admiral Anika
But, I will say that I'm kind of shocked that service in the Bay Area is lacking. One person I tried to get work from a couple of years ago said they were doing a huge build-out up there and that SF would be the first major city with full AT&T 3G service. - Admiral Anika
I lose all AT&T service at my office at least twice a day. That's the main reason I'm not upgrading my first generation iPhone right now. I'm holding out as long as I can in the hope that Apple will open up the phone to other providers. - vicster is...
If Verizon can get the iPhone under their roof, I'll switch back over in a second. - Justin Korn
I haven't had any trouble with my ATT service since switching, but once my contract is up, I very well may go back to T-Mobile. I didn't have any problems with them, and their plans were cheaper, with better customer service. - Jennifer Dittrich
Verizon will never get the iPhone until Apple decides to change the chip in the phones. Verizon's network runs on the CDMA system rather than the GSM system that AT&T is currently using. So for all of you out there hoping and praying for Verizon to get the iPhone, you might as well wake up from the dream, because I don't see apple changing the chips any time soon or Verizon going to the... more... - Wizetux
Changing the chip in the phone would not be a big deal in my opinion. Many phones on the verizon network are world phones. Which means they will run on GSM or CDMA why could apple not adopt such a chip and then just make one phone for everyone. - Zach Scott
I just wonder if AT&T could do anything to improve reception in SF. Why doesn't Apple exert more pressure on AT&T to create a better experience for their customers? It's particularly bad along the waterfront. - Thomas Hawk
@Zach: many of those phones have dual band chips in them. It has been told that it would only cost Apple an extra 5 cents per phone to have a dual band chip put into the phones, but that would also require Apple to change the production method that they have add in place for the last 3 years. And if I had to guess, it is part of the AT&T / Apple agreement that the phones would not be... more... - Wizetux
@Thomas: it would probably mean that AT&T would have to put in more towers in the SF area. But if I had to guess, no one want's those towers in their backyard or they would take away from the beauty of the waterfront area so the city won't allow them to put them in. - Wizetux
More towers sound good to me. I love photographing Towers. The Sutro Tower is one of my favorite things to shoot in SF. - Thomas Hawk
You have to keep in mind that it's also a long process that includes approval form the the landlord & city. A long process from finding a city to actually building it. We work on a small part of that process and sites are often finally built 6 - 12 mos. *after* we've done our part. One AT&T site (upgrading Cingular stuff) we worked on at the beginning of April first started in July '06. we just got it back because the structure changed. If it's upgraded by the end of the year, it will be a surprise. - Admiral Anika
Yes, AT&T is in trouble, even though Apple just reported that iPhone sales were up 600+% in Q3 2009. Clearly, the iPhone mob—made up of a small subset of Twitter's estimated tiny userbase of 10-15 million users—has taken to the streets with pithforks and fires. - David Chartier from iPhone
Yeah, it doesn't seem to be stopping a whole lot of people from buying them. - Bill Kinney
Ugh I'm so tired of hearing how much the AT&T network stinks when the only people I hear complaining is the SF metro area people. :P - Nate Pilling
Nate it stinks in LA and NYC too. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Just seems like the big metro areas are echo chambers. :P I'm surprised AT&T doesn't have indestructable networks in place in those areas simply because of that fact. - Nate Pilling
I live in the Twin Cities and I've never once heard any of my Iphone toting friends complain about the AT&T Network here. - Bill Kinney from email
Nate, it does seem repetitive, but it just boggles my mind that I can be in San Francisco, a large tech heavy city and literally get no service. That really sucks. Maybe AT&T needs to think about blanket wifing small highly concentrated urban areas if they can't keep up with the usage and need to take some pressure off their 3G network in heavy use locations. - Thomas Hawk
I guess it doesn't help that the tech podcasts I listen to are all out of the SF area. I agree, it is very strange, but there are a proportionally large number of iPhone users there, it makes sense. Still, it gets a little old. Plus I'm feeling really grumpy right now, so hey. ;) - Nate Pilling
I've honestly never had any problems in Orlando. The case for my iPhone (incase power slider) seems to cause some reception issues because of the extra battery, but it's always been snappy, even on edge. - Ryan Massie
It's sucks in Seattle too. - Amir
I love my iphone. There were a couple of things that we were disappointed with in the beginning such as downloading pictures I think from another phone or something and they said the app would not be available until August. We did get the 16G and at the time Wal-mart did not have them out on display because they said there were some things that were not ready but we wanted the 16g so it... more... - Tricia Edwards
Nate - In PA most of the time (all over). Stayed with Verizon and the so-called 'non-smart' (this cracks me up) LG Env Touch because AT&T doesn't come close to the coverage in the areas where I am. Not an iPhone but very cool and social apps built-in with a growing Verizon app store in the offing. AT&T was clearly not ready for this. LG makes a solid product in this space. - Charlie Anzman
I've been whining about this for well over a year... (and Anika has been offering some great insight into what's really going on - lord knows, AT&T won't admit they have a problem or give any honest info). Here in coastal LA (Venice) I get 3G about 20% of the time; EDGE about 60%; GPRS about 20%. That'd be bad enough even without the crappy call quality/dropped calls, terrible... more... - Anthony Citrano
Maybe someone needs to map the "no service" areas... at least in the SF area... if there were an iPhone app, this could easily be done by all the users. Save the GPS data, then upload to the map when internet service is restored... - Paula W
We had a lot of trouble in our old apartment fairly close in Chicago, but it was a solid brick building built around or before the turn of the 20th century. The building itself is practically a dead zone. In our new place in the Jefferson Park neighborhood, AT&T and 3G are stellar. Sometimes it's less about sheer network performance and more about the building materials you're buried under. - David Chartier
I had HUGE problems with dropped calls in my suburban NJ location. I called AT&T weekly and finally got a callback from their networking department saying my problem was resolved. My bars went up and my number of dropped calls went down to almost none. In fact, I can even get calls in my basement which didn't happen at all before. My advice is to call often until you are satisfied. The squeaky wheel... - sean808080
I wonder if there is an issue with the newer IPhones and the network. I rarely have an issue with my 1st generation IPhone. AT&T does need to do something to get people happy with our service again. - ChiliMac
@ChiliMac Anika can probably answer that better, but it's not that complicated: AT&T simply does not have a national 3G network. They are far behind their competitors. Think of it in terms of supply vs. demand. Their core "supply" of 3G bandwidth is lower than probably any of their competitors (especially in big markets). Yet the demand is skyrocketing for several obvious reasons, not the least of which is market penetration of 3G devices such as the iPhone 3G and 3GS. - Anthony Citrano
AT&T is pretty much the way to go in the middle of America. Verison is so-so and Sprint is about useless. - Robert Hafer from iPhone
Robert - I guess it depends on where you live. In the Minneapolis/St Paul area, all three networks are about even, and TMobile's not bad either. - Bill Kinney from email
We have Rogers and Fido, which is way better then at&t. Go Canada (sometimes) - Zachary TG
@Zach, except that we have to pay thru the nose just to get a data plan at all. Ugh. We need another carrier (not just another rebadge like Koodo or a reseller like Virgin) up here to force Telus, Rogers and Bell to fight to the bottom. - Matt Mastracci
If AT&T was able to support half of the phone that they have on their network it would be different, but I drive 52 miles on the interstate one way every day... and I drop calls at least 4 times on the road... Maybe one day AT&T will have some competition for the iPhone and will have to do something to the network to keep people happy. But if Verizon was to get any type of iPhone I would cancel my AT&T and pay my cancellation fee before the press release from Verizon could get cold. - Thomas
Steve Rubel
Since I am all cloud, I have noticed the OS doesn't matter to me. I tote apps on a thumb drives and I get what I need anywhere.
What are your favourite apps? - Tris Hussey
Google Chrome and web apps. I run XMind and Evernote as desktop apps on a USB key. - Steve Rubel from email
I agree more than ever, despite my Mac OS X preference. - Louis Gray
Much agreed on the OS agnosticism here (esp with a locked-down work laptop). Is FreeSMUG (http://www.freesmug.org/portabl...) pretty much the best analog to PortableApps? - Sam Harrelson
I'm good as long as there's a remote desktop app. I could work on an OLPC - Rodfather
I can't get away from the graphics/video/design production apps. Still need a PC to run most of those. Cloud is out a bit further for workflows involving these. - SolidSmack
Steve, I don't buy into this whole "cloud exclusively" thing, yet. And that is an important yet, here's why. The underlying browser, as well as the underlying OS, makes the promise of cloud computing, well, cloudy. If you have ever tried browsing to a flash-enabled site with Linux Firefox and Ubuntu, you know what I am talking about. Invariably, the content cannot be displayed on such and such a browser or with MacOS or Unix or some troubling combination. - Chris Sparno
Then there are the sites that still require IE and ActiveX, locking Mac users out completely. For the promise of Cloud Computing to be more than a promise, the browser and underlying OS needs to be 100% abstracted from the user experience. And as long as a few players maintain dominance in that area, good luck. - Chris Sparno
Holden, that is true, as long as MS, Apple, Google and Mozilla all agree to really abide by the standards for once. MS is the most troubling, as their idea of innovation is taking a standard and mucking with it just enough to lock out the competition. - Chris Sparno
There needs to be a standard browser architecture that runs the standards. Then cloud computing will meet its promise - Chris Sparno
@Louis I am on a PC at work for the first time in five years - and a desktop too. I requested one. That's a first time for me ever (I have been on notebooks since 1995). At home I use a Mac and on the road I do too. In between I use my iPhone. It's liberating not having to carry a notebook, even one that's just 3lbs. - Steve Rubel from email
Chris - re: your comment on MS/standard/ActiveX, I think it's the other way around. For general consumers, they are more likely to avoid sites that display content in ways they can't access it - as opposed to changing their browser to meet the demands of those sites. Granted that won't be the case for business users, but I think that sites that attempt to force users into adopting a specific browser will just be further marginalized. - Jim Tierney
Jim, by locking out Mac users, I meant those running MacOS X and Safari. Today, the argument a Mac runs less software is truly bogus since it can run any OS including Windows. But take for example the fact that today, when on a Windows platform box, I need to have three browsers installed to make sure I have one that will run the assorted sites I go to. Why can't I have one browser (Chrome perhaps?) that works everything with every media type on a website. - Chris Sparno
Jim, true on the ActiveX point, but a lot of times, users don't have a choice. Granted, its getting better, but look at the state of affairs for Realtors who need to access MLS systems - pretty much all of them lock out the Mac due to IE and ActiveX requirements. Some SAAS systems are the same way. Thankfully, most of the young companies doing the cool stuff today know better and are more platform agnostic. Its about content and a lot of the sites that are set in their ways can't get out of their way. - Chris Sparno
Holden, this is so true. Makes you wonder why there is ANY resistance to adhering to the standards. Shouldn't that be the course of least resistance? - Chris Sparno
Holden, definitely. Run Chrome on a stick and Evernote. - Steve Rubel from email
omg rubel you = straight P-I-M-P - sean percival
Steve, what do you do when you come across a non-PC and need to plug that thumb drive in? In that case, the underlying OS is still a hindrance to cloud computing, no? For example, you say you have Chrome (which I publicly love), and Evernote (which I now starting using because of you). But Chrome (not the Mac beta) is for all intents and purposes Windows only. Then what? - Chris Sparno
The most portant question is still, what do you do if you are without web access? - Robert Hafer from iPhone
@Robert It's very hard for me to be without web access (and access to the apps and data I need/use) with an iPhone. - Sam Harrelson
Nope, no tethering. I'm even leaving my laptop behind when I travel for conferences (which is amazing). Basically, the iPhone has become my primary computing device and my various laptops are entry points (I'm a Middle School teacher, so on-the-go mobile is incredibly impt for me). Wrote about the apps etc I use here: http://bit.ly/YImRr - Sam Harrelson from IM
Sam, I like your assortment of iApps. I see you are another one of us with multiple Twitter apps on your iPhone. I think its interesting that your iPhone has become a hub of your computing environment rather than just another tool. I too have found the iPhone to be perfect for acting as my view of the world and my laptop is relegated to large data entry jobs and work projects. Nice posterous too. - Chris Sparno
@Chris, I keep a copy of Portable Firefox for Mac on the same USB drive. Otherwise, I just run their instance of Safari in private mode and I am good to go - or I use my iPhone. - Steve Rubel
@Robert - simple, use USB drive apps or my iPhone. - Steve Rubel
@Sam, my iPhone is slowly becoming my primary computer. If it starts connecting to full size monitors and keyboards, lookout. - Steve Rubel
Steve, that's what I figured. Great stuff as usual. Thanks for keeping us all "thinking". - Chris Sparno
I carry everything on a bootable linux thumb drive. My apps. My desktop. Wherever I am. I did actually try turning my android phone into a bootable usb drive. It almost worked. - Slappy Line
I still can't find a descent inventory app for my iPhone. The wine cellar at work is wireless opaque, so I can't update numbers to a web app. The ones that call themselves inventory apps are just 'list of stuff I own apps'. I tried Bento but it doesn't do running totals (that i can figure out) on the iPhone version. - Robert Hafer
If you're into netbooks, you might like to give Jolicloud a try. I'm just about to install it on my Asus EeePC 701. - Dan Monsieurle
@dan Jollicloud is available? Thought it was only via OEMs. - Steve Rubel from email
Nope they are giving out a 1000 accounts a day right now, starting to really get out there. I have it on my asus eeepc, pretty slick OS. - sean percival
I don't understand how people get Much done without fundamental UI tools like drag and drop, and newer innovations like Quicksilver/LaunchBar, etc. Web apps are great for some specific tasks, but after that a powerful OS with software that can dig in deep to shared resources is killer. - David Chartier from iPhone
OS still matters to me as the cloud has to run on an OS... can't escape it - Bwana ☠
@David, my needs are limited. With the exception of PowerPoint and mindmapping apps, I can do what I need in a browser 100%. - Steve Rubel from email
Steve, just out of curiosity, do you know http://280slides.com/ ? - Meryn Stol
@Meryn, I do - but many decks I create are confidential, so I use PPT. - Steve Rubel
@Luke sure I worry about security but I am very choosy about where I store data. Business info, for example, is on Edelman servers. - Steve Rubel
I love the cloud idea as well. Although my question about Chrome OS is will I be able to sync my ipod or iphone with it? - Tomy Thomson
Music and multimedia is an open question, isn't it. - Steve Rubel from email
Music wise, I keep a few of my "desert island" albums on Dropbox and the iPhone. All of my other music consumption is via Pandora, Last.FM, AOL Radio and numerous podcasts that I download via the iPhone. I do have one laptop that I use as a syncing station for my iPhone but it's become just a place to grab backups which I then upload immediately to Dropbox. - Sam Harrelson
Definitely can't say the same for myself - LANjackal
You can upload all your music to the cloud too, and not have to lug it around. (try lala.com) - April Russo (app103)
I tried running portable firefox when using a shared PC at work, but found it painfully slow via the USB drive. - Jonathan
I wonder if you use photoshop or do some programming. Probably the all cloud solution is not indicated yet for these tasks. - funkyboy
@funkyboy : why not? intellectual property or industrail property matters could, will rise. So what? Clouds will just get mature enough to help businesses. For now, I'd say that The Clouds are still in their early years. If somehow, part of the CPU implied in the many daily compilations of larges set of code, or implementation of any sort if real continuous integration process, if somehow some part of that CPU could be saved from server machines dedicated to that, that would be those costs saved. To start. - Zackatoustra from IM
I am switching machines & OSes every other week. All I see is Firefox Tabs. It is available in every platform and now that Weave is being developed. I don't need to export my current working tabs to my home/back to work. - karthick
@funkyboy Have you ever heard of SUMO Paint? While it isn't quite Photoshop yet, it does show that the old excuse of not being able to do stuff like that in the cloud won't live much longer. http://www.sumo.fi/web/ - April Russo (app103)
@funkyboy and @April Russo - also check out pixlr: http://pixlr.com/editor/ - it''s pretty freakin sweet for an online app - Bill Rawlinson
What are you doing to back up your cloud in case it dissipates? - David Libby
@David everything I do is backed up in multiple places. - Steve Rubel
Sounds like a business opportunity to me, Steve. In all seriousness, I think if it required fewer steps (backup, different web apps, numerous logins, memory stick, etc.), it could be a very viable option for many people. There needs to be an uber web service that does all of that for you with a few clicks. A personal Network Admin. Oh wait...Google...could that be you I hear at my door? :-) - Michael Chin
I now use Ubuntu One. My files and docs sync between the cloud and my bootable usb stick whenever I am online with it. Smooth with a capital Smoo. - Slappy Line
Robert Scoble
I might have bought my last iPhone. Here's why: http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009... Well, that and AT&T sucks. Dropping calls all the time now.
I think you'll love an Android phone! I have a HTC Magic, and it's great! - Patrik Johansson
still looks like the iPhone's ugly sister - Roger Oldham
HTC Hero is the the one to keep an eye on. However AT&T will get this issues resolved, just going through growing pains with the recent success of the iPhone 3GS and other smartphones. I wouldn't leave just yet. - Sloan Bowman
Looks like a nice phone !!!! but i do not think i will give up my iphone - Aaron Thorn
Roger: it feels like 1993 to me. Remember that year? The Macintosh was WAY ahead of Windows. But here Google is catching up quickly thanks to having an ecosystem that's building Android in. It's the ecosystem that's getting me interested. - Robert Scoble
I'm already looking for excuses to switch thanks to AT&T - Jesse Stay
Well, that and the fact that AT&T is so bad. - Robert Scoble
If you use Google services (like Gmail, calendar etc), using an Android device is a brilliant experience. Everything syncs. Check out the Hero. I'm waiting for the HTC 'lancaster' -- or, indeed, anything with a physical QWERTY keyboard. - Ewan MacLeod
Robert since when do you base your choices on looks? What whats should be foremost what matters. Agreed? - Sloan Bowman
is the iphone screen big enough to watch videos on it whilst, say, sitting on an exercise bike at the gym - Mark
The Hero UI reminds me too much of Palm Pre, my girlfriend has the Pre and it's absolutely terrible. I don't see why so many people were excited about it. - Colin Anawaty
Colin: Were is the keyword there ;-) - Sloan Bowman
Until Android gains serious adoption by phone manufacturers (and app development community), Palm Pre nicely fills the gap, and Sprint's network for both calls and data have been stellar. Pre is great, by the way. - jcunwired
At&T was the deal-breaker for me, but then I actually like my G1. Android app still lag well behind iPhone apps tho... - Curtis Phillips
Trouble is that with GSM in the U.S. you have a choice of AT&T (bad) and T-Mobile (worse). We switched to Nokia E71 over a year ago and haven't looked back. Free tethering with JoikuSpot, too. - Ward Mundy
Ryo: I agree the iPhone simply is a very limited device. I'm a huge Symbian fan but Android is my number 2 pick by a long shot. I don't care about appearance. I want power and freedom to get the job done. The iPhone simply can't stand with the others when it comes to that. - Sloan Bowman
HTC can make anything look good - Kashif Khan
Ryo: what happened in 1994? Windows NT. What happened in 1995? Windows 95. Game over, Microsoft took over from Apple's lead. Same is happening here. - Robert Scoble
And as Ewan said: If you use a lot of Google services, Android is perfect. The only minus I can see is that iPhone has so much more apps. But I think that will change later on. - Patrik Johansson
where does rim fit into this discussion? - Tobias Lewsadder
I just want a android phone which has working 3g with AT&T. Just need Lancaster (Memphis) to come out - Ryan
all the best apps and games are on Iphone though, not other platforms - Mark
Patrik -- the apps will come-a-stormin' as people adopt. - Ewan MacLeod
N97? Anyone? :) - Holger Eilhard
Wow, that's an attractive phone. And I'm warming up to Android. Just wish it had more apps available. - Jason Huebel
Sloan: Symbian is dead. Sorry. - Robert Scoble
N97 lacks native SIP. - Ward Mundy
Robert: sure, that bit is interesting... be great if they focused a tiny bit more resource on the industrial design & UX tho' - Roger Oldham
RIM is fine as long as it continues to have the best keyboard and Exchange integration. But I think long term it has problems too. - Robert Scoble
Holger: have you actually used an N97? Sorry, isn't even in the game. - Robert Scoble
Why Rob? business people always need to email and thats awesome with blackberry - Mark
Pretty damning comment for poor Nokia! - Ewan MacLeod
To me it's a Palm/iPhone/Android world now. The rest have to get on board (IE, compete!) or go away. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I was referring to your comments about the N97 a few months ago. :-) - Holger Eilhard
really thinking about buying one. the fact that it doesn't have to be bought at one provider is rather nice. - Pim de Groot
Android or Palm Pre. - Zachary TG
"Palm/iPhone/Android world"... certainly true in the U.S. - Ward Mundy
Is Nokia's OS miles behind Apples? - Mark
Looks nice. Love my iPhone I just wish I could get my MMS pictures without the dreaded Failure encountered during view message errors - Matthew Noreen
in my consultingi have always pointed people towards the iphone for fun and personal use and the blackberry for business purposes. does the pre or any android based phone fit in the middle? - Tobias Lewsadder
Re: Palm/iPhone/Android - No Sh!t - that is an understatement. - Don Strickland
I've always wanted an iPhone, but have no AT&T coverage. Now that they've bought Alltel assets, they should be coming here, but are likely 2 years out. That leaves me with Verizon. Android also intrigues me, but until they get a device on Verizon, I'm still out of luck. - Shawn Kirsch
Holger: I thought they woudl do a better job on the OS. I also didn't expect iPhone 3GS to come along or the Palm Pre to turn out as nice as it did. I also didn't expect that Google would be able to excite developers. All of which are bad trends for Nokia. - Robert Scoble
Robert, I've been hoping for a critique on Pre and WebOS from you for some time. I know lots has been on your plate... - jcunwired
Of course nokia if they were in this thread would say "we sell a zillion phones a day" - Mark
Tobias: you're wrong there. iPhone works great for business too. The only question is whether you can get used to the optical keyboard. I type thousands of words a month on the iPhone. No RIM needed. Android, though, looks like it'll be my next phone, unless someone comes up with a game changer. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I was waiting for that and no my friend its far from it ;-) But you can think that if you would like. - Sloan Bowman
Mark: yeah, and DOS was once #1 too. Who cares? - Robert Scoble
I tend to think Motorola, or any would-be smartphone manufacturer without an OS, should get down on its knees and thank Google for Android. And I'm still not sure Palm survives, even post-Pre. - John Craft
Mark: From a UI standpoint absolutely. From a feature standpoint its been years ahead for a long time. Yes its has its problems but I can do so much more with my Symbian phones than I can with my flashy iPhone 3GS. I'm not biased just being honest from my perspective. - Sloan Bowman
I actually asked you if I should get an iphone yesterday Rob and you said I had to decide myself. It's such a hard thing though. - Mark
Google crippled SIP in Google Voice. Waiting to see if they do the same thing with Android. - Ward Mundy
Robert: Have you ever thought that Android could have use for business purposes too? That's something that I was oblivious to when Android first hit the market. - Amir
Mundy: Crippled as in how? I love my GV - Sloan Bowman
Crippled as in can't make a connection to GV via SIP. - Ward Mundy
Sloan: I have a lot of Nokia phones too and have been a Nokia fan for a while (they still do better video) but the market does not care about having a Zeiss lens or MMS. Who cares? I watch teenagers in UK. They only text. The bleeding edge users are on the iPhone and Android. Developers like: http://www.youtube.com/scoblei... NRU. That app was built for Android first, then ported to iPhone. You can't do THAT with your N97. - Robert Scoble
Amir: I think Android is going to get lots of business users excited. Just like Windows did in 1995. Apple's risk is that they didn't learn from 1994. - Robert Scoble
Oh I played with an N97 (the guy wanted to sell me one so I wouldn't go to the O2 store for an Iphone) he said it was just as good. It wasn't, and it felt like a piece of shit - Mark
"Have you ever thought that Android could have use for business purposes too?" - Amir, see http://www.youtube.com/watch... . I have my G1 syncing to a Google Apps account, and given the costs associated with licensing and supporting Exchange, Android + Apps is a threat to Microsoft and RIM. Gmail's contacts format needs more work, though. - John Craft
Never trust "the guy" lol... - Colin
robert: what about bis/bes? arent those important in the business environment? - Tobias Lewsadder
The Android Samsung Galaxy looks quite good, and unlocked, but still over 400€. - Nils Sandin
Well he was a salesman in a rival store :D - Mark
Mark: I thought it felt good when I first saw it, but they didn't redo the OS deeply enough and didn't make the Web really usable, like iPhone does. That's why iPhone is taking over. As people move from texting-only to understanding the web is important part of their mobile device they need something usable. Nokia isn't usable. Period. - Robert Scoble
Robert: Do you think Apple's mistake/risk in '94 will lead them to a different perspective on Android? - Amir
Android will revolutionise the enterprise because you can finally control the experience for the end-user. Imagine being able to take an HTC Hero and install a 'Citibank' approved and managed version of the Android OS. - Ewan MacLeod
Yeah Rob, the problem is here in the UK, People like me don't want to CALL people anymore, we want to SMS people and we want to check Facebook on a nice browser on the phone. - Mark
Robert: I hear you and trust me I know exactly what you mean. I'm amazed by the apps on my iPhone. I'm just trying to bring that into the Symbian world where its capable but has been neglected for so very long. I am able to share my life easily and with high quality with my Symbian devices. For me this is a powerful thing. You can do it on the iPhone but one app at a time ;-) - Sloan Bowman
Amir: it doesn't look like it, because Apple is very secretive and very closed to outside innovation. But they do have the best developer platform out there (which shocks even the iPhone team internally). That's already one difference between 2010 and 1994. Apple pissed off developers back then and stopped focusing on them. Right now Apple is VERY focused on developers -- their ads show it. - Robert Scoble
Discussions like this really show off the beauty of FriendFeed. - Ward Mundy
God if Nokia came in this thread they could learn a thing or two from this one - Mark
Amir: I think Android will overtake iPhone very soon if Apple doesn't change the way things are going. They are too closed about what they do and what they allow us developers to do. Its going to bite them. - Sloan Bowman
Bingo! - Ward Mundy
Mark: I wish they would. Doing my best to make sure that happens. - Sloan Bowman
Nokia are reading, I guarantee it. - Ewan MacLeod
AT&T is the only reason I don't currently on an iPhone. I have an Android phone (a G1 from T-Mobile) and while it's a great smart phone, I'd much rather own an iPhone. - Chrimmus Tad from fftogo
Mark: Nokia doesn't care internally. THAT is the HUGE problem. - Robert Scoble
Well they need to fucking care. I've played with their latest and greatest and its NOT GOOD ENOUGH. - Mark
a game changer to me would be apple incorporating iwork into the iphone. - Tobias Lewsadder
Mark: Nokia believes that having market share is all that matters, not in having OS leadership. They dropped the ball. I don't know if they will be able to find it again. - Robert Scoble
Robert: Correct. Do you think if Microsoft was in Apple's position [being oblivious to outside innovation] they [Microsoft] will be able to thrive like Apple did with the iPhone? - Amir
Robert - agreed. I had to give up my beloved iPhone because AT&T doesn't have service in my new home location. I even bought a cell booster to supposedly help but it didn't. No service at all but according to the AT&T coverage map, I'm in the "moderate" coverage area. Now I'm fighting the early contract cancellation due to no service. Sucks but I'm hearing a lot of AT&T coverage and dropped call issues lately. The woes of cell service and the electronic world - isn't it great? - Sharon Dexter
Robert: Untrue, I know several people at Nokia that care immensely. They realize the problems but I don't think they have the expertise to see how to fix it yet. I know some very great minds are working on it. - Sloan Bowman
Mark: now you are getting where I've been coming from for the past two years. There's a reason why I wait in line to buy iPhones when I get Nokia phones given to me to try. - Robert Scoble
Sloan: well, Microsoft has the same problem. And, sorry, they don't communicate to the world that they care. They are arrogant and go on stage and poopoo the iPhone and Google. I was there in the audience when they announced the N97. - Robert Scoble
And when people come to them and say they have a problem they hem and haw and don't admit they have a problem. I've heard this over and over from people who go to Nokia and meet with execs there. - Robert Scoble
If they really thought they had a problem they would pull a Nokia and rebuild their OS from scratch. That's the only way they can solve this problem. - Robert Scoble
Apostol: like I said, it's an iPhone/Palm/Android world until someone changes the game. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I had voiced this opinion as well, communication is key and they are getting better at it. Making a good presence on twitter and other networks with real people listening to real users. - Sloan Bowman
But they paid good money for that OS. - Ward Mundy
With RIM hanging on due to business users. Check this out: http://online.wsj.com/article... - Robert Scoble
Sloan: nope, that won't help Nokia. I feel very happy with communication from Nokia. I get tons of devices to try. I get access to people. But the OS sucks and that won't stop being a problem. Nokia needs vision again and needs to ship a great product again. - Robert Scoble
Nokia is just not the company i think about when i want a smartphone. they made good normal mobiles, but apple and HTC/android are the ones that pop into view when you want an internet phone. - Pim de Groot
N97 just shows they finally caved to the providers. - Ward Mundy
The last few statements in this conversation is why Microsoft, Nokia and Blackberry should pay close attention to Android and WebOS, because they will be taking market share from them. iPhone too, but theirs is more a carrier issue than device functionality. - jcunwired
Apostol: What do you mean by that regarding the N97? What do you think is so bad about it? - Sloan Bowman
What about screen size? I find the the screens on the iPod Touch too small already. Can't imagine having a smart phone with an even smaller screen. Will trend to bigger screens ever occur? - Thomas Sheppard
Ward: just because you threw money down the toilet doesn't mean you should keep doing that. Palm learned that. Nokia will too. - Robert Scoble
I'll take an open system any time over a closed one. And I think it sucks bigtime that Apple decides what carrier I use. It's a great piece if software, but it sucks as a mobile phone. Android and this Helios phone look promising. - Alexander van Elsas from iPhone
Couldn't be happier with E71. Over half my calls are SIP, and they're all free. All I need is WiFi. - Ward Mundy
Thomas, there's a fine line between a phone and a portable media device. Any larger than iPhone and it gets to be a bit unwieldy as a pocketable device. - jcunwired
Good lord, Robert, this is you and me agreeing here :) - Ian Betteridge
The game will change I agree but to what direction is anybody guess now. If you want my opinion it won't be Apple that does it. I'm actually surprised you like the iPhone at all Robert. You seem to be a multitasking kinda guy to me. At least very heavy into communications. - Sloan Bowman
If you do decide to bail on the iPhone I'd be interested in the switching cost (the effort it took to move to a different mobile OS) and what kind of non-obvious lock-ins exist on the iPhone. - scott anderson
Apostol: It has a great battery IMO. I push mine very hard and it last all day no problem. Are we going to get into the battery war here? G1 iPhone are you serious? - Sloan Bowman
I agree there has to be an optimal screen size but in education they are talking about mobile learning using these phones (Mobiglam being an example of an early system) and I can't see it working on any smaller screens. - Thomas Sheppard
Apostol: No its not blazing by any means but for me it gets the job done and done well. I am able to communicate via email (personal, Exchange) Sync my google contacts live with Google Sync over Mfe. Have twitter open if needed, chat and last and entire day doing it. Not to mention document my life with my wonderful photos and videos and push them to the web without touching a computer. - Sloan Bowman
Ward, the E71 is a bit of a "hidden gem". For anyone wanting a "BlackBerry-like" phone with a keyboard, it's a really, really sweet phone. - Ian Betteridge
Ward: Right there with you. Google voice and Gizmo SIP make an powerful combination. Of course other SIP providers are just as well. - Sloan Bowman
google has a great opportunity with the chrome os and android. their flawless integration, if done right could be HUGE! - Tobias Lewsadder
Bottom line I don't disagree things don't need to change with Nokia but I do disagree when people say they are worthless. The communication power of a Symbian powered device are endless. But trust me I'm up for any platform that can offer this to me. If that is Android, iPhone then i'll support it. - Sloan Bowman
Great discussion. Here are perspectives from a few developers that may show some chinks in the iPhone's armor: http://furbo.org/2009... http://www.marco.org/143265621 - Sterling Zumbrunn
The industry is about choice. Open choices are always the best door to enter so you don't get hit in the ass by a door closing. - Sloan Bowman
I find the iPhone much easier to program for than Android as I only have to test on a small set of models -- Android is not so simple, especially with these new hybridizations of the operating system. I'm worried it'll become as painful as Windows programming. That said, Apple really needs to fix the App Store approval process. - Raj Advani
Raj, that's true now, but will it be so in the future? Apple is likely to follow the same slow-diversification path for the iPhone as it did for the iPod, I suspect. - Ian Betteridge
Sloan, I don't think anyone would disagree with you there. But the fact remains that both Nokia and Microsoft let the smartphone world pass them by in thinking that symbian and winmo were the OS of choice while others caught up (and surpassed). Unless and until this changes they will be worthless devices strictly within the context of smartphone useability and functionality. - jcunwired
indeed, plus the 3gs and 3g have enough differences that there are 3gs only apps. But i agree with Raj overall the hardware specs are the same - Kashif Khan
jcunwired: Agreed but clearly stating that its dead is dead wrong. People said Mac was dead too remember. Look at it now, all it takes is innovation and dedication and we will have a more rounded solution. Call me overly optimistic but I have faith the Symbian Foundation will change things. If i'm wrong I will be the first to admit it. Trust me I have plans for a HTC Hero in the palm of my hand the day they come out ;-) I bought the iPhone 3GS a couple of weeks ago and like it but wouldn't say I love it. - Sloan Bowman
Prasson: Oh I promise you the next iPhone will probably be incredible as far as hardware goes. Surely they will include a flash, surely right. - Sloan Bowman
I'm going to cry if this ends up on AT&T. - Christopher A Carr
Still looks like he has to touch the screen multiple times to get things to happen. Same problem with Windows Mobile phones. - Jeremy Gollehon
My 3G used to hold a rock solid signal. My 3GS is horrible. 20% drop rates confirmed by Apple Genius - they have a tool that can tell. This is my second one, the first was unbearable. I suggest everyone make an appointment with the Genius bar or drop into AT&T this week. Overwhelm Apple and AT&T with the complaints and testing. Maybe (probably not) it will get their collective attention if they have to spend an entire week troubleshooting. - chris tirpak
Unlocked N97, baby! - Thom Kennon
Didn't you say that when the Pre came out too? I think you may have "Oh Look! Shiny!" disease... - Kevin Pedraja
would verizon be the right answer for the iphone. every verizon phone i have played with was so locked down. i remember comparing my wifes razr to my brothers who is on verizon. it was a totally different os. will verizon give apple and the iphone users the freedom needed for a revolutionry product like the iphone? - Tobias Lewsadder
With competition, Android phones will soon cost less than $200 towards $100 UNLOCKED, which is the real advantage here.. - Charbax
Also, in theory, Android phones should be able to run VOIP and IM only, with absolutely no Voice and SMS contracts needed, but only a month by month pre-paid data only plan required. - Charbax
You can already do that in the UK, with a Skype Phone on the 3 network. Skype-to-Skype calls are free once you're bought the phone - you don't even need a data plan. - Ian Betteridge
After using Iphone(1st gen,3g and 3GS) for nearly two years, I feel no other phone can beat it in browsing the web and it is more of information output device than data input device. The touch keyboard is still very usable to type. I have not used any other smartphones but I feel they lack the smoothness of the Iphone UI. It is not multitasking but the process of going to other program... more... - ashish
Ian Betteridge, the Skyping that you are talking about is fake. You still need a voice and SMS contract plan. VOIP should be VOIP, it should be located on the data plan. In Europe we can have $20 month-by-month pre-paid only data plans, with absolutely no contracts just perhaps a 10GB or 20GB monthly data usage limit. - Charbax
Android UI is not only developed by Google, but is now developed by thousands of embedded Linux engineers in each of dozens of companies. So obviously Android UI should provide the best possible UI. Anyways, all smartphone UIs are the same. What matters now is freedom to do what you want with your phone, and the price of these devices can only be brought down by increased competition. Android only enables that. - Charbax
Try supporting this on your iPhone... without paying AT&T through the nose: http://mundy.org/whereib - Ward Mundy
Texas Instruments OMAP3, Qualcomm Snapdragon, Freescale i.MX51 or Nvidia Tegra all would have been 3-4x more powerful ARM based processors. So I'd much rather have an ARM Cortex A8 based device. Lots of Android phones are coming out in the next few months by many other manufacturers than only HTC and Samsung. - Charbax
Awesome thread. I'm struggling to find one device that does all I want. I'm testing a bunch right now (fringe benefit). 3GS is probably the best overall. Tweetdeck for iPhone is the koolest app I've ever used. Palm Pre has a slick UI and does great with Office 07 attachements, but apps are limited & no good roaming package for me over in Asia + no tweetdeck (yet)...N97 is interesting..... more... - MarkHirsch
The iPhone is the best gadget I've had in a while but lately the AT&T service really sucks here in NY/NJ - it drops calls and email replies don't get received. Really getting ticked off with it. - Sally Church
Golly gosh O'trousers Friendfeed is quieeeeet tonight - Mark
AT&T really, truly sucks - big time. - J.D. Deutschendorf
T-Mobile's pretty great, in my experience. I understand that varies greatly depending on where you are, however. - Keith Bourgoin
You really can't go wrong with Verizon and a Blackberry. - Bryan R. Adams
except for the blackberry part.. - Chris Heath
I haven't had many problems with the Blackberry. Push email (that works) is king. - Bryan R. Adams
AT&T seems to be in meltdown re: providing, even voice bandwidth. i left them for Sprint, big improvement. I discovered that Sprint has a "free roaming deal" with Verizon so their footpints are the same. - Steve Bell
I am so glad I saw this thread. I am going to check out the HTC Hero. Hope it has a release date soon in the US. My iphone 3G is good, but I want more w/o having to pay $400 to upgrade and get AT&T's service. - Amani
@Scoble - I really, really, really want the HTC Hero but from what I understand it's 3G bands are the ones that AT&T uses in the US so the most recent speculation is that it will end up there. So you'd be stuck with Ma Bell still anyway. I wish this could have gone to US T-Mo, I'd be all over it. - Bryan Zirkel
Hey Chaps, in the UK the Iphone has unlimited data plan built in monthly cost, the Hero has 500mb a MONTH plan built in. That's a 3 minute youtube video every day and a few emails. - Mark
AT&T service is dropping calls almost everywhere now. - Amir
Realized the problem with too many phones around... blew one up today...Plugged the AC adapter for the mophie 3GS battery/case into a N97 since they for some reason have the same custom connector & poof.. blew the N97... - MarkHirsch
Probably will stop me from buying my first iPhone - Kenneth Younger

I wonder how many people and companies are changing their passwords and policies this morning because of #twittergate and http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... ? I know I am, I was doing a few of the stupid practices that caught Twitter.
Does anyone have a good blog post for how to come up with strong password names and policies? - Robert Scoble
taht's great, I am also willing to change my password. - Madhav Tripathi
1Password on the Mac... - Holger Eilhard
not for corp use but for personal use 1Password is perfect - Mike Bracco
Holger: beat me to it :) - Mike Bracco
Mike: Sometimes I'm faster. Rarely, but happens :-) - Holger Eilhard
I will write a blog post about it. - Madhav Tripathi
Robert on the network side of things there are programs that generate strong passwords. But you can develop a "feel" for it. I have to create them all the time. Just don't use "memory aids" they lead to social hacks - Melanie Reed
You're okay if you don't use 3rd party apps to login to Twitter, right? - Steven E. Streight
Sorry, should have linked to the TechCrunch article about how the hacker broke into Twitter: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... - Robert Scoble
Steven: this isn't about your Twitter account's security. It's about your security on the Web. - Robert Scoble
I have no need because my passwords have always been 12+ characters, include caps, random characters, and numbers. I'm sure most people that use FF are the same way. The engineers I work with bitch about my choice of passwords all the time. - coldbrew
The sad reality is any password can be hacked. It's just a matter of time as in attrition. But you can make it harder for them with strong passwords - Melanie Reed
I use Lastpass.com to generate and save passwords. - mrshl
Yeah, we've always tried to make sure our hosting customers understand how important it is create good passwords, but many still use bad passwords, hopefully all of this recent press will scare them into using better passwords. Most people don't care about their password until something bad happens to them. It's similar to people who ignore making backups and then find out the hard way. - Scott Beale
Just pick a couple good ones that you can use for different things. Practice typing them so you can remember the keystrokes easier. The more you use them the easier it will be to remember. Use keepass or FFox to keep track of them. - Logan Lindquist
1Password hands down for ease of use and strong password creation on OSX and iPhone - Jerry Schuman
I wrote this regarding Twitter, security & the cloud: Here's my thoughts http://www.thetechnewsblog.com/2009... #twittergate - Jim Connolly
Melanie: it's the social hacks that will catch the most people. Not the strength of the passwords. Notice that he didn't need to guess the passwords, he just needed to use the ecosystem against itself. - Robert Scoble
I agree 100% about 1Password, one of the best Mac apps out there: http://agilewebsolutions.com/product... - Scott Beale
Roboform on Windows. Otherwise 1Password. - Herb Hernandez
Very few. People and companies generally don't make policy changes until they're bitten themselves. - Darren
Good point about social engineering, Scoble. - coldbrew
Robert: yes. its the easiest hack to employ - Melanie Reed
Or there's a business requirement . e.g. Customers inquire about policies based on what they've read in the news and impose requirements on their partners. - Darren
If you need cross-platform then I'd look at http://www.keepassx.org - Jerry Schuman
1 - Mark
Unfortunately most companies don't change passwords until they have too, the IT department doesn't want to deal with the calls when someone can't remember there password. - Kim Landwehr
my 14 character alphanumeric pass for my gmail account was hacked about 2mo ago. After fixing, Ive gone and changed all passes; & none of them are of the same ilk. my twitter account is the simplest; cause i care less if its hacked. - clarke thomas
The best thing to happen to corporate security was the public insecurity of Microsoft software int the late part of the 90s and earlier in the decade. - Darren
I use Roboform Password Manager to navigate and automatically login to websites using complex passwords: http://www.eenmanierom.nl/wachtwo... (Dutch post but Google Translate is nearby). - Patrick Mackaaij
a lot, I hope..... - Alex Griffiths
FTR, I use Keepass (hosted on sourceforge). - coldbrew
I had to this week my XBL account was hacked. - Dylan Richardson
I had to change everything and cancel 2 cards. - Dylan Richardson
I use GRC to gen and never use anything less than 20 chars unless the site doesn't support that length. Sometimes I use the first 20 in a 64 bit key, sometimes I use the last 20, sometimes I pick the middle 20. Sometimes I use 21, 22, 23, 19 char length. I also lie on all reminder questions. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I use a hosted version of clipperz (http://clipperz.com/), totally random passwords, web accessible from anywhere and hosted on my own server. - Justin Yost
same here, Justin. I use lastpass which generates random passwords, and has one master password, which is a very secure one. - Tim Hoeck
A couple of months ago, my gmail was hacked. They then quickly went and changed my Itunes account over to another email and started buying iphone apps. In the about an hour and a half, that they had control over my email they spent almost $1000. Luckily they made the mistake of changing the name and language on my account. I don't use the email much anymore but g reader so I spotted it.... more... - Rasmus Lauridsen
for years, private corporate systems have had security measures like password strength policies for a domain, password age policies, secure connection requirements, logon policies that deny multiple logons, locking out user accounts after multiple password failures, etc. etc. etc. this incident with Twitter is a huge wake-up call. - Karim
What first caught my eye was this article was written by Nik Cubrilovic. I had wondered what had happened to him, and hoped everything was well with him. - Lloyd Budd
Yeah, Nik was in the TechCrunch office when I was there the other day. I figured a big story was underway cause Arrington told me to stop wasting Nik's time and to go bug the interns. :-) - Robert Scoble
Making an awesomely strong password wouldn't have prevented this attack. It was using the same awesomely strong password that made the attack possible. And who hasn't done that? There's just too many apps that require passwords out there. - marziah
I typically use KeePass to generate as strong a password as I can. I try to keep passwords to a minimum of 20 characters and use letters, numbers and symbols...some sites allow this some do not. If there is a password character max I will use that max (within reason). The problem I have is with some of the accounts I want to be able to access from my Blackberry. Having a 50 character... more... - Sean Brady
I use RoboForm to create all my passwords. I have them backed up and honestly couldn't type one out if I tried, they all are 14-16 chars long - George Handlin
+1 George. A good pw generator like RoboForm or 1password can save you a lot of grief later on. - Bill Sodeman
interesting experiment, make accounts at free websites and have really awful passwords and see how long it takes to get hacked! - Mark
I agree with Sean Brady, makes it tough entering on the blackberry. Especially how sometimes it will cap the first character and when it's masked, makes it even tougher. Wish there was something I could host on my own server that would work with all my machines (Win/Mac) and my phones. I don't like the idea of storing on some hosted service. Thinking of trying RoboForms hosted service since they are trusted and I've gained personal trust for the application. - George Handlin
It makes me anxious not knowing my password is for a particular site... so I've always been wary of things like 1password or roboform. I also need something that I can pull up from any computer, which rules out 1password. I've heard good things about supergenpass - Mark Philpot
Take a look at Clipperz then, if you can get to the internet you can get to Clipperz (http://www.clipperz.com/) - Justin Yost
Justin - @jtyost2 - I just checked out www.clipperz.com for the password mgmt, looks promising, but wish there were better integration w/ Firefox somehow. It's pretty cumbersome to get started. - Alex Schleber
Yeah that is a drawback. - Justin Yost
thanks 4 reminder should do it now arrgh!! as we speak!! - polou/indigo_bow
Robert due to all the virus issues we went to a more secured password format 3 months ago. We use a minimum of 8 characters numbers letter and mixed case password plus you can not use your name. We force our users to change their passwords every 3 months. - Rob Cairns
I think for a security policy to be effective it has to be secret... - Alexandros Georgiadis
KeePass (Win) and KeePassX (cross platform) is excellennt! Strong public encryption and publicly available source code. I would love to go with LastPass, they have a beautiful cross platform syncing solution, but since they are closed source (for now) I'm holding off switching to their product. - Daniel Chow
I stopped using the same password years ago. To help me keep up with the various passwords, I have been using KeePass on Windows, Windows Mobile and OS X for several years; I'm waiting for iKeePass to become available. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
http://www.yubico.com/home... for hardware PW protection, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US... FireFox addon LastPass is for software app, https://www.grc.com/passwor... for GRC's ultra High Security (put it on a usb flash and copy paste), http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2008... geeks know everything! - Rich Weaver
Yep the 'ecosystem' is undoubtedly insecure. I believe this type of hacking also has elements of social engineering to it. I dislike the "secret questions" as today when most people's personal information is transparent online what purpose do those questions serve, except to weaken security? Can we please opt out of dumb security questions... someone start a petition or something! - ASKJDOG
Great Post, I learned more about improving my security in 15 minutes than I would have at a 2 day seminar. :) - Robert Higgins
I hope the lasting legacy of twittergate is better security thanks to articles like this one. - Stephen Mack
I use http://passwordmaker.org/ for most of my password, it means I only need to remember a single password and it generates a unique password for each site I use (by hashing my password with the url). For the remaining sites, I use http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/ and dropbox to sync my password database across machines. - Wilka Hudson
I see many people using/recommending password generator sites. I also recommend these, but one day I thought - what if the password generators are hacked? --> http://robotterror.com/site... - Robert J Taylor
Password Maker (the first link) isn't just a password generator site - I use it as a FireFox plugin. It's also open source, so if you're really unsure about the safety of it you can have a look at the code yourself. I realise that's not a very good answer for an non-coders, but it does mean that if it was hacked *somebody* would notice and it would be all over blogs like Bruce Schneier http://www.schneier.com/blog/ - Wilka Hudson
Also, for you those of using Firefox - you should look at this: http://cubicledenizen.blogspot.com/2008... - Wilka Hudson
I think unless we develop somethig better than passwords we will never fix the problem. Using different strong passwords is good but it's no better than locking a cycle up outside a store, they just ensure that only dedicated people hack your acount/steal your cycle, which in general are the worst people to hack your account. - Darren Rollett
Some people on here have informed the world what their password policy is and what tool they use to generate passwords. If this had been a conversation down the pub then probably not a problem but if I want information on high value passwords FriendFeed would probably be the place to go due to the people who use the system. - Darren Rollett
Nobody has mentioned https://mashedlife.com - it uses a bookmarklet to log you into your sites. That way you can use anything for the password. Cliperz looks like a similar system. - Daniel Siva

My new Dell Studio XPS is noisier than my Mac. Gets hotter. Has better screen. Other quick comparisons:
The fit and finish on it isn't nearly as nice as the Mac. - Robert Scoble
Overall it feels plasticky. - Robert Scoble
The Dell has better speakers. The Dell has a much more common VGA port. Which, of course, means it won't work with my Apple 21 inch monitor. - Robert Scoble
I just gave my son the same computer, really is squishy feeling and upgrade options are minimal especially the power supply - Robert Burgin
Which model? I just ordered the 16" - Chris Mayer
Robert: yeah, battery doesn't last nearly as long as a new Mac, either. - Robert Scoble
How's the battery life? I'm getting about 9 hours with my new Asus eee 1005HA and am loving the backlit LED screen - Brian Daniel Eisenberg from iPhone
it's not apple-to-apple (pun intended), how should we compare such kind? - Toni @ NavinoT
Better screen? Wow - Zoli Erdos
On the other hand, the Dell runs Windows better than the Mac does and now I have a machine just for doing email, which makes me more productive. - Robert Scoble
Zoli: yeah, Apples really don't have the best screens on the market. You should see the top of the line Lenovo. It blows the Mac screens away. - Robert Scoble
I disagree I dual boot windows 7 on my Mac and it runs faster than any pc I have run Windows 7 on just my opnion though - Robert Burgin
Talk about screens, I am baffled why so manufacturers offer matte (antiglare) screens. The world is not all about vids and pics... some just want to work, and glare is horrible on most fashinable glossy screens - Zoli Erdos
Brian: this Dell model only is supposed to get about three hours of battery. I think the reason it gets so hot is because it has a bigass video card in it and a fast centrino processor. - Robert Scoble
Lenovo... hm... I'm cheap.. was eyeing the Ideapad U350 - lightweight, but not top-of-the-line - Zoli Erdos
PP35L is the Dell model number. - Robert Scoble
I don't think Lenovo is as near as good since IBM sold them imho - Robert Burgin
It's 16inch model, Robert. I'm thinking of getting that model when Win7 comes out. You recommend? - Gregory Schultz
i have the studio xps desktop, really nice machine. so overloaded its great - sean percival
I got it with the 256GB SSD, hoping that will extend the battery life a little (plus add a lot of performance). - Chris Mayer
I am a HUGE Mac fanboy but et me tell you Windows 7 really has me liking it, I just hope they don't mess it up before they release it love the way they took the drug dealer approach, give you a taste get you hooked now pay me lol - Robert Burgin
Robert: Windows 7 is very nice. I'm actually leaving Vista on here for a few weeks just so I can remember what it was like again. :-) So far I don't care that much. But Windows 7 was faster and has a nicer UI. - Robert Scoble
I'm going to wait until they ship with Windows 7 and then I'm in. - Craig Shipp
Well in my opinion Windows 7 is one of the best OS's Microsoft has put out, liked 2000 pro allot to but this is a really good OS - Robert Burgin
I'll be putting Win 7 on it as soon as I get it. I have it on all my machines with very few problems. - Chris Mayer
Which Mac Laptop are you comparing it to? - Tim Child
i have the dell xps m1330 - its even a refurb and i would put it up against the macbook/pro anyday. it has hdmi and vga, i wont go into all the specs because everyone has different but in the 5 mos i've had it, i have zero complaints. - Allen Stern
Is that the one with the leather accent? After enduring heat issues with the nvidia gpu on both my xps m1210 and 1330, it was easy for me to pass on it. - Adi from iPod
What about resell value? How long is its average lifetime? - Jesse Stay
Adi: yes. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Hey Robert, give this a test on your XPS and google chrome. It's rendering everything in Javascript! It's taxing my quad core pc, your poor laptop might pass out ;) http://www.chromeexperiments.com/detail... - Mark
I bought a Macbook Pro 17, 2 weeks ago. First timer Mac. But I guess I am not cool enough. Just put it back on eBay and am back in Windows' arms :-) Had way too many Windows only programs which wouldn't run well on Parallels. Windows is great, but man I wish someone would make as beautiful PCs as Apple products. Considering XPS 16 or HP HDX 16t. The 16t is better value feature for feature, but XPS 16 looks so much better. Hmm so many choices :-) - Ritesh Lal
I suppose if you want things done buy a PC. If you want style buy a mac ;) - Mark

JungleDisk's great! - David Schmidt
I mix Microsoft LiveMesh and Jungle Disk backups. It's pretty neat having cross-platform sync and remote backup. - Ryan Massie
Price point? - sofarsoShawn
$1200. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Do you get JungleDisk for free if you use Rackspace Cloud Files? - Ryan Massie
Apostol: a new hard drive is being put in my Mac but I needed a Windows computer anyway. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Nice, I'm convinced already, I hate the new Macbooks & Jungle is prime cloud - sofarsoShawn
What Dell model did you get? Just got my Studio 15 and pretty impressed. - Steve Farnworth
Steve: it is an XPS, will tell more when I get home. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Sounds good! - Steve Farnworth
The new XPS laptops are very powerful. Might be the one with Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz processor and NVIDIA GeForce 9500M graphics. Also like their external looks. - Nir Ben Yona
JungleDisk rocks. 20Gb+ backed up for $6ish a month. Also use Live Mesh, to sync between 2 desktops and a laptop. - John McArthur
I was a big Jungle Disk fan, but lately I've been using Dropbox far more (https://www.getdropbox.com/). The big advantage for me is that Dropbox saves to a local file which syncs to the cloud in the background, while Jungle Disk saves directly to the cloud. The Dropbox way is faster and feels safer as I have local copies on all of my machines (work and home) as well as the cloud copy. - Sean Carmody

Google Chrome: Redefining The Operating System - http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
"What is an OS? When I worked at Microsoft they showed an OS as being layers. UI is top layer. Kernel and Drivers being bottom layer. Both are considered OS. Pedantic OS arrogance is worse than any of my many sins." - Robert Scoble
Microsoft has nothing to worry about until Google provides warranties and a support line. This will be another toy for the tech oriented to play with. And then for next 10 years we will hear "THIS is the year that the Google OS is ready for the desktop" - Patrick Allmond
A competitive OS space is GREAT for the consumer and will continue to drive more cost effective options and hopefully innovating features. While Microsoft has been the number 1 option for enterprise customers for many years, perhaps in the future there will be other serious options that also entertain SERIOUS interoperability, and first class support services to match. - Clifford Kennedy
It better not crash. Ever. - Matt Soreco
Chrome will revamp the Open source market. More tools built on Linux will enter space. And finally consumer is the king, since open source is free - Michael_techie
