"Woo hoo! Thanks, Roost! This was a great idea for a contest and I had a ton of fun house hunting. Next step: List the old Flip on craigslist."
- Ryan Kuder
"Does FB have a process to verify that a person is actually dead? If anyone can contact them and "memorialize" someone, there could be some serious pranking coming on. And what happens when I click to a friends memorialized page? How does FB let me know the person is dead? I imagine that would be a pretty crappy way to start a day: Me to Steve's Wall: "Hey, Steve! Seeing as you just got back from Africa, I thought you'd like this article on giraffes that I found. How have you been?" Facebook: "Sorry, Steve is deceased." Me: "What?! Noooo!!! (sob)""
- Ryan Kuder
Roll call...this can be great if we all participate. Add yourself to this shared map. I created a placemark on the 2 major intersections near where I live.
- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.
- Mark Krynsky
Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.
- Andrew Trinh
@Bec...nice. You are the first brave female on here.
- Mark Krynsky
Cool idea, Mark! I was thinking something like this would be fun the other day. Duly added myself - or at least the nearest big intersection. ;)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Mousing over the usernames shows your Google profile info...cool.
- Mark Krynsky
I marked a bus stop near my house. But not TOO near. :)
- Nine
If you haven't yet...go add FriendFeed to your Google Profile...it will then auto-discover and allow you to add a ton of other profiles you have.
- Mark Krynsky
Thanks guys. This is coming along nicely. It's great to have as a resource to see where everyone is from. Hopefully this can become a standard feature on FF one day.
- Mark Krynsky
Canterbury, Melbourne, Victoria added
- Duncan Riley
Current count: 13 US, 11 Europe, 3 Australia, 1 Middle East. Happy to see many others add themselves overnight. Hoping more will continue this.
- Mark Krynsky
Hey Robert Haas - We're apparently neighbors. - edit. Okay maybe not, unless you live at the airport. XD
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I've read the instruction and still don't see the button thing to add myself. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.
-
@Jill, make sure you are logged into your Google account and then click on the edit button above the list of names already on the map. You will then see the pushpin in the upper left hand side of the map.
- Mark Krynsky
Added. Seems like there are a lot of us in the Bay Area...we must do a get together at some point.
- Neal Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?
- Neal Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!
- Mark Krynsky
Oooh, now that's a really great idea.
- Neal Jansons
Pinned! sheesh this just cost me 1/2 hour of time as I scrolled thru all the folks :)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Except for Bret, there are no FriendFeeders on the penninsula between San Jose and San Francisco. So much for Silicon Valley early adopters.
- Ryan Kuder
Cluelessness alert! I'm not seeing how to add my pushpin!
- Hutch Carpenter
For some reason whenever i use google maps in creation-mode, it defaults to some other maps I've used, not the one I'm trying to access - ah, figured it out. Had to de-activate some other collaborative maps
- anna sauce
Added. What a great way to see who's on FF in Austin, TX!
- Carter Rabasa
Nice! I'm the only active FriendFeeder in Montreal: Quebec represents FF! I could be a French Canadian FF ambassador or something. =)
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
I don't really care about stuff that's outside of my friend group. My friends are already pretty good at bringing me good stuff from outside the group anyway.
- Robert Scoble
This would get rid of all spam and bad actors. Or almost all, assuming you don't follow spammers.
- Robert Scoble
Robert's initial first comment was "be right back", as a placeholder to keep the first slot while he composed his real first comment. Zee was responding to that
- Ken Sheppardson
And it would bring back Techmeme-quality results because it would be based on people you follow and verify. Oh, and even better? The new list feature in Twitter will let you build different kinds of searches.
- Robert Scoble
Ken: but the people I'm following ARE most people and most of them are following too many to keep track of trends themselves.
- Robert Scoble
Most of the 5,000 people you're following are following thousands? I'd love to see the actual numbers behind that... you've done some analysis?
- Ken Sheppardson
want a screenshot of your feed how it looks like?
- ffcode
agreed - that type of search filtering would not only be useful, but the whole point of social network information sharing - using my friends as my distributed search engine for things I am interested in
- Arthur Coleman
ffcode you want me to send you a screenshot?
- Robert Scoble
Ken: informal analysis. I hand followed each of the people I'm following and looked at their following behavior. It is rare to find someone who is following fewer than 200 people now. At least amongst early adopter tech influencers that I like to follow.
- Robert Scoble
Hm... There's an API call to retrieve a list of users a given user is following... would be simple to do a full-blown check....
- Ken Sheppardson
to build a list is also difficult as i have learned from the little experience i have had
- ffcode
StatusSearch did a non-realtime version of this, but they appear to have scratched it at the moment.
- Steve Farnworth
With viewpointapp.com; we are doing real time relevance and filtering within the people you follow. Search and trends sounds like a great idea. We will see what we can come up with!
- Jay
from ViewPoint
It would be interesting to see if the trends differ than the trends posted on the Twitter home page. I'm sure it would correlate to the size of your sample.
- Mattb4rd
I might, Robert. Also, I hope the voice you hear in your head when you read my comments here isn't snide and snarky. I'm genuinely curious about this from a tech standpoint. :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
I've wanted something like this for a long time. I guess I just assumed that it was obvious enough that someone (maybe even Twitter) would already be working on it. Maybe we'll take it up as a side project.
- Ryan Kuder
I think this would be very useful. Twitter Times is going in this direction but right now it doesn't have search or trending topics. Their main focus now seems to be aggregating links/stories (techmeme-style) that are popular among the people that you're following. Here's my personalized Twitter Times page: http://www.twittertim.es/mdoeff
- Mike Doeff
What is being overlooked here and to which I believe I heard mention that Twitter was building in-house was the ability to trend against any topic/individual in the network. Perfect for gaining market feedback on competition outside of your network.
- Gregory Hanson
Granted, it's a little off topic as the main point of the thread was for people you follow, but building an open trending app would broaden market appeal.
- Gregory Hanson
That would be a good tool. But wouldn't it be cool if you got a pair of tech guys, built it out and returned to raise VC money yourself? :) Stop giving away your free ideas!
- Louis Gray
I would love a Twitter-like Top 10 Trends (or 20 or 25) here on FF. I'd be curious to see the difference. Though I'm still pretty new here but people told me you can sort of simulate trends for yourself?
- Chris Nunz
from FreshFeed
Louis: I tried building new app at NPR last Friday and I decided I suck at it. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I've been enjoying the "search my timeline" feature in the Tweetie 2 iPhone app -- looking forward to the desktop client getting that feature as well. Totally agree with Robert, though: It seems like search/trends among the people i'm following has an incredible about of value to a user. A user like me.
- Ryan Sholin
Mike Lizun: Works ok though it'd be better if you made trending topics at least 2 words (trending topics always seem to be 2-3 words). I get a lot of one-words that don't give me much. The trend should follow a longer duration of time as well. I am following 2000+ and only see a few tweets for certain trending terms.
- beersage
yeah, i built out the search concept but saw Twitter announce they're doing it. decided to stick to other concepts and chase the $ elsewhere. thanks for the validation of a good idea though
- Gregory Hanson
Wouldn't something similar be interesting on FB or any social network for that matter? Is Twitter more interesting due to the volume of tweets?
- Dave Hodson
Twitter needs to incorporate this in the API, IMHO.
- Dennis Jernberg
Sounds to me like something Facebook would do if they implemented trends.
- James Harnedy
Good idea about the "Trending" element, Robert. As far as search, really FriendFeed got pretty close if only their import of Twitter friends could have been more complete (not just those already on FF). Stands to reason that the FF guys could have added a trending functionality, Alas... BTW, I just noticed that at ~ 2,500 subscriptions on FF, the "Add To List" pop-up craps out. No more...
- Alex Schleber
Yeah you r right, there exists no twitter trends just for your tweet stream/tweet inbox (tweets you receive from other people).
- TrafficBug
Actually we have. http://journotwit.com - take a look at the Tag clouds. Also running http://uktjpr.com for the UK technology journalists and PR community so you can see what's happening right now in UK technology.
- Dan Monsieurle
"Hi, I'm Mark Trapp: I just recently moved to Portland, I'm in marketing, and oh by the way, I just won the Nobel Peace Prize. How about them apples?"
- Mark Trapp
It doesn't necessarily work everywhere. If you're hustling a pool game, and you introduce yourself as a Nobel Peace Prize winner, you may be doubted.
- John E. Bredehoft
It looks like it's a guy named Casey Pugh who works at Vimeo. I don't know if Vimeo is behind it or not. Casey's site: http://caseypugh.com/
- Ryan Kuder
It's not mentioned here, but ShowtimeFu is a side project from my friend Aaron. Because we've got two young kids, we don't get out to movies much, but if we did, ShowtimeFu looks like a great way to find out where the new Pixar film is showing.
- Ryan Kuder
only Aaron could figure out a way to make our outings to the movies a business expense. huzzah!
- Edubya
Oops! I so forgot about PeoplePod! Thanks Yvette & Joe.
- Wayne Sutton
Thanks for featuring Hi, I'm in your review Wayne. We just launched two weeks ago. We built Hi, I'm in 48 hours as part of the Rails Rumble competition. We've got a lot more coming soon. (Note: I'm a co-founder of Hi, I'm).
- Ryan Kuder
Hello Ryan, thanks for the comment, no problem. I really like what you have created with Hi, I'm and I'm looking forward to seeing the upcoming features.
- Wayne Sutton
"In addition to aggregating together the activity on social networks (such as Facebook and LinkedIn) and communication platforms like Twitter, this service also takes into consideration YouTube channels and Flickr profile pages. That is only fit – there are people that complement their every social movement with activity in services like those, it is an not an uncommon scenario in any sense."
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
from Bookmarklet
It seems to only show what you have contributed, not everything in your stream.
- Kenton
Kenton, we're working on how we handle the different feeds. For Digg, it does what you say. For example, we'd like to show what you've submitted AND dugg. Same on YouTube. Right now, it's only what you contribute, but not your favorites. We're working on it. Thanks for trying it out! (Note: I'm a cofounder of Hi, I'm)
- Ryan Kuder
Hi Ryan - How did you find this thread? - from twitter? (I'm just curious how people find mentions of their Co. or brand..)
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Lol. I watch FriendFeed and Twitter and blogs to see where questions may pop up.
- Ryan Kuder
I just created mine... I LOVE it! - http://hi.im/wordsforliving - I'd prefer it to not show everything in my stream because then it would be cluttered. This is like an online business card. Love this!
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Love it, Jannifer! One of the things we're working on is what a profile looks like once you've got a lot of feeds in it. We're also working on getting the feeds from more of your services. We're glad you like it!
- Ryan Kuder
Right now it's just showing Feeds from Twitter and Digg. Are there other services right now that can show the updates? Because I barely use Digg at all. :-/ (maybe I should use it more?)
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
We're working on getting the feeds for the other services as soon as we can.
- Ryan Kuder
Do you need to add the # symbol when you add a tag?
- Iván Abrego
No, it does that automatically. Do you like it or no? We're still working on how to represent tags.
- Ryan Kuder
Ok. I was just confused. I like the overall look. I also know that a lot of people are asking for a lot of features. I think you're doing great.
- Iván Abrego
it's not a clone more like a small regenerated body part of ff - ryan, you guys offer 3 ways to authenticate: domain registration, fb and twitter - but no way to sync those 3 identities, is that on your roadmap?
- mike "glemak" dunn
I am very confused by people who think that hi.im == friendfeed. To me, hi.im is a online business card. It lists all the places people can find me online (I happen to use it for business and personal). I give it out to people in order for them to contact me. Friend feed is one of the many places I go to interact with a chosen set of people that are interesting.
- Jeremy Behrens
Why can't I log in with FB and Twitter? Every time I do, it tries to create a new identity. I already have an identity, I want to use the alternative login methods.
- Otto
Furthermore, this reminds me a lot of my Google Profile. If it could import the stuff directly from my profile instead of making me type it out it'd be nicer.
- Otto
I was misled by the site's own description. I signed up for an account and agree it doesn't have FF's functionality; it's just an aggregation of one's own content. It would be useful to be able to put in multiple blogs; as best I can tell, one of each content type is the max.
- James Joyner
Hey guys. Great feedback. Hi, I'm was originally built in 48 hours for the Rails Rumble. We have LOTS of stuff we want to do. We do not see ourselves as a FF competitor. Jeremy has it right on. We want it to be the way people introduce themselves on the internet.
- Ryan Kuder
Otto, right now, you can't login with Twitter or FB unless that's how you created the account. We're working on better Twitter and FB auth so you can do that. We'd also like to do the single user name/many networks import, but will take us some time.
- Ryan Kuder
James, you're correct. For now, it's just one of each type. This is on the roadmap. Plus, we're working on better feed handling and RSS parsing so we can show your blog entries (or any other RSS feed) on your page as well. Good ideas.
- Ryan Kuder
Ryan, that sounds like a really great feature. Also, Otto is right hi.im is a lot like google profile. However adding "http://hi.im/Jeremy" to my email signatures is a lot nicer than "http://www.google.com/profile..." plus I like the way hi.im looks compared to google profile.
- Jeremy Behrens
Glad you were able to acquire an ever better position
- RAPatton
So are you going to tell us what the new more interesting position is?
- Ryan Kuder
so you haven't really lost a job. you just have a new one.
- edythe
I've lost the job, "Engineering Manager for Yahoo! News." It is no longer mine, with no input from me. Yes, I have a new position, so I'm not out of work, but I will no longer have that job once the transition is complete.
- Mistletoe Glen
It's interesting that you think of this as a US job, but Yahoo! has news sites in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, France, Britain, Germany, India, Taiwan, Vietnam, S. Korea, and a number of other locations around the globe. While I don't speak for the company here, it seems that, by moving News development to Taiwan, they're emphasizing the global nature of the product and focusing on high-growth areas (asia, middle east) because the US market is likely to grow much less slowly in the coming years.
- Mistletoe Glen
Good to hear that you are still on the Yahoo! team. My sense remains Yahoo! has incredible upside potential. Have a fun holiday weekend.
- Dave Martin
Glad to hear you were transitioned to a new position rather than let go altogether. Hopefully the new job is a perfect match!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I hope the new position works out for you
- Rodfather
Best of luck, Glen. Enjoy Taiwan! Oh wait, the job is moving to Taiwan but you're staying put?
- Ayşe E.
It would be fun to live in Taiwan for a while. I'd go.
- Cristo
Thanks, Katy. We're watching the Hi, I'm servers closely. For an app that was built in 48 hours, it's taking a beating this morning. Glad you like it!
- Ryan Kuder
You've got to stop sharing links that FORCE me to sign up for yet ONE more site I will quickly forget I have. :) Actually, I like the simplicity. Thanks.
- Sheryl
Hi Amy, I'm one of the cofounders of hi.im. Thanks for signing up! Now, just share your hi.im link when you introduce yourself on the internet! All of your content on one page.
- Ryan Kuder
Oh. I thought's what FF was for. :-) But at least now I've staked out my territory.
- Amy℠
Ryan, how do you delete networks you have added by mistake? I'm having a little trouble with changing my account settings . . .
- Amy℠
Amy, you can't currently. We've got a few bugs that we know of. Unfortunately, because we built it for a competition, we're not allowed to update code until the judging ends on Sunday night. You'll get an email from us once we've got the bugs worked out. Thanks for helping us test it out!
- Ryan Kuder
No problem. I poked a little fun, but I really like that it's so simple - you can aggregate all your stuff without the clunkiness of FB, and a person wouldn't have to wade through everyone else's updates and comments too. Good work, and good luck!
- Amy℠
and my grammar is really, kinda, "like" , going down hill...lol....damn the internets
- Bill Heslin
Eh...grammar schmammar. It's all good. BTW, I'm out for the weekend, so help yourself to the meds! :D
- Helen Sventitsky
lmao....love ya Helen...Rock that vicodin....Woo Hoo!!!
- Bill Heslin
and btw...kidding..even though your rockin it...All is well..on my end...ty
- Bill Heslin
No worries, Bill. :D I think I might keep that avatar on that site. Encourage me to be the shooting star that I (almost) am. :D
- Helen Sventitsky
I love the No worries statement that most of us in the U.S. are starting to use...Thank you Australia for that one...And btw..I miss you Sydney...Helen...I need to DM ya...
- Bill Heslin
Heh! I picked up No Worries while I was down in San Diego. I also worked with a co-worker from Denver who would say it all the time.
- Helen Sventitsky
Aside from the adding of twitter accounts that everyone else here is concerned about, I find I can't add more than one blog to my account. The 2nd one seems to default to the first one.
- Helen Sventitsky
Thanks for the bug report, Helen. We'll look into it.
- Ryan Kuder
haha am I the only one who thought of Uranus after seeing the pic? :p
- 'Like' robot (frɐnc)
Not sure why my Flickr isn't coming through :S and why there are two Twitters on my page...
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Hey Lindsay, I'm one of the hi.im cofounders. We built the app in 48 hours last weekend for the Rails Rumble competition. We can't deploy any fixes until the judging is over on Sunday night. We've got a release teed up for Monday most likely. We know about the twitter and flickr bugs. And believe it or not there are others. But hey, 48 hours. So far. Thanks for giving it a test drive for us and we really appreciate the comments.
- Ryan Kuder
@Ryan - that's cool about the competition... Good luck to you guys!
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Thanks, Lindsay. If you are so inclined, you can rate the apps at http://railsrumble.com. Currently, Hi.Im is in first place. Naturally, we'd love everyone's support, but there are a bunch of great apps in the competition with us that you can play with there.
- Ryan Kuder
Oh! That's the thing one of my coworkers was telling me about today! Sweet! He is interested in learning RoR after seeing what you can do in such a short time.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Jonas and Josh, email me ryan@koombea.com and let me know what's going on. I'll see if we can get it fixed for you. The site should be a lot more stable come Monday/Tuesday.
- Ryan Kuder
Louis, you're right. We built it in 48 hours last weekend for Rails Rumble. We've got several bugs we know about. All in all, we're pretty pleased with how it turned out for a 48 hour app. We've got our bug fix release ready to roll plus a few new features, but we can't roll it until after the judging is over. We'll get there.
- Ryan Kuder
Ooh! So I can put bug fixes your way then? Excellent.
- Louis Gray
Heh, I created one of these...doesn't seem to work. :/
- Jonas, Leper of FF
If Johnny's there, and Scoble too (as the confirmation email says), then I might as well. Simple enough (especially on the edit page): http://hi.im/jbug (using my Posterous username)
- Dennis Jernberg
Sorry, correction: Scoble's not there. The confirmation email's wrong. :/
- Dennis Jernberg
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, don' tell him. Let's just have one place without him :P........... But Alex is totally ok
- Johnny Worthington
Okay. Alex then. But they're trying to drop the hint, right in the confirmation email. Did you catch it? (Reread it if you saved it.)
- Dennis Jernberg
Surely Scoble (Robert) won't be pleased...
- Dennis Jernberg
Hey, guys, I'm one of the hi.im cofounders. Scoble knows about it. I talked to him last week before we built it and again on Sunday after we launched. We were expecting that he'd have signed up before that email went out. We built hi.im in 48 hours over the weekend. We've got another release coming Saturday with fixes and features. The email copy will probably be changed to include Johnny Worthington instead. Thanks for signing up and for the comments here.
- Ryan Kuder
Sorry, been too busy lately. I will get involved.
- Robert Scoble
cool, I just signed up and got "lindsay". Have to update it tonight. :D
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Tempted to make one ... hi.im/gonnaeatyou rawr...
- John Wang
Here's mine: http://hi.im/helen . I'm a little bugged that they keep adding Twitter as an additional network with no way to remove 'it.
- Helen Sventitsky
The main one that's driving me nuts is that when you go to edit the networks, it adds one not allowing you to remove it
- Outsanity
from IM
yup thats why I have 3 empty twitter icons on mine :)
- Bryan Lee
Hi, I'm one of the hi.im cofounders. We've got some bugs. We built hi.im in 48 hours over the weekend for the Rails Rumble coding competition. Unfortunately, code is locked until judging is over. We've got a release coming this weekend that should catch most of these. Thanks for signing up and for the comments. We really appreciate it!
- Ryan Kuder
ok you twisted my arm. I'm getting bryansays as well :)
- Bryan Lee
Hi Jonathan, I'm part of the hi.im team. Thanks for signing up. We're locked down right now because of #railsrumble, but we've got some fixes and enhancements coming this weekend. I'm http://hi.im/ryankuder ;)
- Ryan Kuder
Ryan: one more bug. You have to hardcode a "slash" with the seesmic social network to get it to work.
- Bryan Lee
There's a few like that. Some of the networks aren't updating content regularly right now. Thanks for the heads up on the Seesmic bug. I'll make sure we have it in the queue.
- Ryan Kuder
@Bryan, Unhub wasn't our inspiration. More Alltop or PopURLS, but about you.
- Ryan Kuder
Yeah! I got "Will" So surprised it wasn't claimed yet. Can't wait for the bugs to get worked out.
- Will-Pastor of FF
