Ken: informal analysis. I hand followed each of the people I'm following and looked at their following behavior. It is rare to find someone who is following fewer than 200 people now. At least amongst early adopter tech influencers that I like to follow.

I think this would be very useful. Twitter Times is going in this direction but right now it doesn't have search or trending topics. Their main focus now seems to be aggregating links/stories (techmeme-style) that are popular among the people that you're following. What is being overlooked here and to which I believe I heard mention that Twitter was building in-house was the ability to trend against any topic/individual in the network. Perfect for gaining market feedback on competition outside of your network.

Mike Lizun: Works ok though it'd be better if you made trending topics at least 2 words (trending topics always seem to be 2-3 words). I get a lot of one-words that don't give me much. The trend should follow a longer duration of time as well. I am following 2000+ and only see a few tweets for certain trending terms.

As far as search, really FriendFeed got pretty close if only their import of Twitter friends could have been more complete (not just those already on FF). I really hate the use of '#fb' to indicate something was spawned in Facebook. Need diff microsyntax for that.
Some posting tools use that syntax to indicate you want your tweet to be published to your FB feed as well.

I am very confused by people who think that hi.im == friendfeed. To me, hi.im is a online business card. It lists all the places people can find me online (I happen to use it for business and personal). I give it out to people in order for them to contact me. Friend feed is one of the many places I go to interact with a chosen set of people that are interesting.

I was misled by the site's own description. I signed up for an account and agree it doesn't have FF's functionality; it's just an aggregation of one's own content. It would be useful to be able to put in multiple blogs; as best I can tell, one of each content type is the max.

Otto, right now, you can't login with Twitter or FB unless that's how you created the account. We're working on better Twitter and FB auth so you can do that. We'd also like to do the single user name/many networks import, but will take us some time.

It's interesting that you think of this as a US job, but Yahoo! has news sites in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, France, Britain, Germany, India, Taiwan, Vietnam, S. Korea, and a number of other locations around the globe. While I don't speak for the company here, it seems that, by moving News development to Taiwan, they're emphasizing the global nature of the product and focusing on high-growth areas (asia, middle east) because the US market is likely to grow much less slowly in the coming years.

Amy, you can't currently. We've got a few bugs that we know of. Unfortunately, because we built it for a competition, we're not allowed to update code until the judging ends on Sunday night. You'll get an email from us once we've got the bugs worked out. Thanks for helping us test it out!

Hey Lindsay, I'm one of the hi.im cofounders. We built the app in 48 hours last weekend for the Rails Rumble competition. We can't deploy any fixes until the judging is over on Sunday night. We've got a release teed up for Monday most likely. We know about the twitter and flickr bugs. And believe it or not there are others. But hey, 48 hours. So far. Louis, you're right. We built it in 48 hours last weekend for Rails Rumble. We've got several bugs we know about. All in all, we're pretty pleased with how it turned out for a 48 hour app. We've got our bug fix release ready to roll plus a few new features, but we can't roll it until after the judging is over. We'll get there.
