It is probably time to use these valuable initiatives in a more focused way. Rather than just engaging the “public” (and the public turns to be a handful of citizen developers), open data and application contests should be directed to NGOs, voluntary and non-profit organizations and – most importantly – to employees themselves. I know I have been mentioning quite a few times the importance of employees (and I’ve coined the quite controversial concept of employee-centric government), but I strongly believe their role is pivotal to unleash the power of the government 2.0 transformation. They need to collaborate with NGOs as well as citizen developers or other groups, they need to be involved in planning, assessing and directing initiatives like mashup contests, which in turn need to be more granular, more focused on specific programs or domains or areas of public interest.

Wachovia, 2008 In extensive polling of this age group, fields found that a year after entering the bank the high-flying, deeply engaged Gen Yers "dropped off the charts" in terms of disaffection because they "did not understand how they can make that difference in this corporate hierarchy." Giving them tools -- and plenty of them -- to interact with their work environment is important. Fields said Wachovia's communication network will position the bank well to attract and keep the growing demographic of Gen Y workers.

The first menu you’ll see at Calico Cat Café in Tokyo has nothing to do with food: it’s the cat selection. But you won’t be dining on any of these adorable felines – they’re just there to provide some companionship while you sip a cup of tea. The watchful staff ensure that guests treat the cats respectfully, and provide complimentary bags of dried cat food that can be used to attract your desired playmate. For many Tokyo residents, owning a cat isn’t realistic, so the city’s 30-odd cat cafés give them a chance to enjoy some “commitment-free cat stroking”.

... Twitter seems to be the social-media darling not just with mainstream media, but with the world's largest companies as well. According to the study, 54% of the Fortune 100 companies surveyed are active on Twitter. Another interesting stat is that 21 of the Fortune 100 companies use only Twitter or Facebook Pages or have a company blog. Of that 21%, 76% of those companies that only use one channel, use Twitter. Given that the tool can be picked up quickly, and is especially useful as a customer-service management tool for larger companies, these figures shouldn't be a big surprise.

When I went to Graphika Manila, I ended up taking notes with my DSi and there's an application called FlipNote. This lets users make slideshows and animation. All drawn. This made me think of it and how useful it could be.

Yeah, I saw your birthday note! I gave my mom my DS, so my paper notebook and my iPod Touch are my portable drawing devices. Looks really cool, though! May save up for a DSi someday... Sacha Chua (sacha@sachachua.com)

Hey Sacha, I regularly read your blog and another that, if you're not connected to, I think you might enjoy - "how to save the world" - http://blogs.salon.com/0002007. "Dave Pollard's environmental philosophy, creative works, business papers and essays." He's got an image in the sidebar that says: "Find a Kindred Spirit... Adopt a Shelter Cat." Thought that might resonate.

The survey found that six in 10 (60 percent) business executives believe they have a right to know how employees portray themselves and their organizations in online social networks. And it found that workers disagree -- with 53 percent saying their social-networking pages are not an employer's concern. This mind-set is especially prevalent among younger workers, with nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of 18 to 34 year olds stating employers have no business monitoring their online activity.

“We’ve been struck by the amount of video and eyewitness testimony,” said Jon Williams, the BBC world news editor. “The days when regimes can control the flow of information are over.”

Sacha, thank you for this post! For me it's one of those moments where someone articulates a thought I didn't realize I had about myself all this time — an instant A-Ha!

Thirty three-year-old consultant Michelle O'Malley says online social networks are places IBM-ers exchange ideas and build professional relationships. Michelle O'Malley: You almost feel like if you're not on Facebook you're doing something wrong. Everyone at IBM is on Facebook and it's not just my level or my age range -- it's all the way up the chain.
