Social Interaction Design... considering unseen elements of system like social relationships, power dynamics, cultural rules #ux - http://www.core77.com/blog...
Many tools have pleasant, user-friendly interfaces and take advantage of well-designed physical devices (i.e., they're easy to use from a human-computer-interaction perspective). But it's in the sociological and anthropological arenas where they run into trouble: most social software tools are clumsy and ineffective at smoothly facilitating interpersonal interaction

Nokia Friend View: 7 months after its launch and after several updates, does anyone use it and finds it useful? I personally don't... it could have been the mobile Brightkite/Plazes but it never did!
The service itself is outstanding however the fact that it is Nokia to Nokia only is what will make it useless to most, especially in the states. If they would made this less platform specific they could have easily had a winner on their hands. This is coming from a Symbian fanatic. Useful yes, but only for a very small few of my friends.
- Sloan Bowman
In Italy Nokia has over 50% of share (it was even over 60% last year!), and in Europe in general is still very high. Still I don't see how it can be useful. Even Google Latitude got way superior in short, and the lack of several basic features don't make me think it will get better anytime soon. Pity, as Nokia owning Plazes.com could have combined them to a nice app.

The blogger's intent is to create a ‘language of critique’ for user experiences. Initially targeted at online user experiences but will be extended beyond that. Check it out for new examples of each characteristic and principle of user experience

New approaches to UX design that allows designers not only to understand users' tasks and behaviour and make products that comply with them but also to change these behaviours. Here's three practices described — Persuasion Design, Catalyst Design and Performance Design.

New blog post: Google Wave: What might email look like if it were invented today http://radar.oreilly.com/2009... Being announced at Google I/O this am
Sounds a LOT like FriendFeed. This appears to be a shot at the real-time social web (in relation to friends). However, I guess it's not as public which is one interesting difference.

friendfeed w/ benefits...*snort* +1!

The "outlook" model is a concept that we can all dive straight into. It may not look pretty at the moment but leaping too far into the unknown will put off a lot of people.
- Jamie Vidamour
Would an OS look much different if the same "start from scratch" approach was taken?

Now the question for late 2009-early 2010... does FriendFeed need to integrate (even integrate into) Wave? Immediate reflection is that this will be more for tight-knit correspondence, ala email -- more of a threat to Facebook's model than to Friendfeed's (where broadcasting and discussion among people barely acquainted are the modes). Tho plenty of room for all.

The comparison to Groove, and the parallels to 'Practical Groupware' also occurred to me (BTW, thank you Tim for starting the process of getting a version of it up on Openbooks!). But what struck me most is that this reinvention of email and the erasure of the distinction between collaboration and conversation is essentially private. A large part of Jon's book was concerned with taking...

Gah. 'stuck me most'? 'Thanks you Tim'? I should wait until I've finished my coffee. Incidentally, I've corrected all these mistaks on the FriendFeed instance of the comment. If this was a wave, I suppose those edits would be reflected here.

Uh-oh. Looks like edits in FF *are* reflected here, but long comments then become truncated, and they lose the extra line-breaks. Hmm.

Reposting the second half of my comment here: Another set of problems occurs to me: We understand more-or-less the implications of having multiple email accounts, and our email clients have features to support this, but what does it mean to have multiple Wave accounts, especially on separate Wave servers? For that matter, when you leave Acme or Initech, can you take your waves with you...

Great article, just to mention that I really liked the text-to-speech feature, I'm a user that does read by text-to-speech, having it streamed, readily available was cool. The title is so what he said in the keynote. That represents Wave in all aspects.
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
love the pragmatic approach of leveraging an existing popular social network instead of trying to create a new one. It'll be interesting to see what happens when FB themselves come up with a similar offering which is bound to happen. As of search, definitely a better experience.

"Uh-oh. Better look out, HTC. Looks like Sense isn’t the only gorgeous Android overhaul on the block anymore. USEB managed to scrounge up a demo of Sony Ericsson’s Android interface, codenamed “Rachel” (as inherited from the device it’s expected to launch on, also named “Rachel”), and man does it look fantastic."

Like the HTC Hero, pre and iphone, I think perhaps a little bit too bloated.
- Charbax
Charbax: WebOS's UI doesn't feel bloated to me. Have you played with a Pre?
- Christopher A Carr
I have seen this before, it was made by HTC, I think it was called TouchFlo? Or something like that. Or was it Android? I can't seem to remember.
- Zachary TG
Zachary: "TouchFlo(3D)" is a UI for WinMo, built by HTC. "Sense" is HTC's UI for Android. As noted in the description, the video shows Sony Ericsson's (probably not complete) UI for Android. So, no, unless you've seen "Rachel," you haven't seen this before.

gratuitous effects and widgets is all I see
- Sivan Mozes
Sivan: It does seem gratuitous. ...at this point, a far cry from Sense. To be fair, I seriously doubt that this is what ends up on SE's Android handsets.

Dr. Eric Schaffer, founder and CEO of Human Factors Internationaltalks about his new design approach christened PET Design. It offers a new approach to help companies influence and deepen their interactions with online customers through Persuasion, Emotion, and Trust. Is it just me or do you think that this is what we’ve been doing all along anyway?

I think it’s a great step forward which will have a profound impact in our lives. Some of-the-top use cases * Extention of cellular networks to rural, remote and maritime environments * Provide mobile users at land, at sea and in the air with ubiquotous multimedia services (Internet, phone, entertainment) * Always-on mode of communication in Crisis/Disaster areas

Makes perfect sense. You’d like to share those moments with your friends, and they’re already there on social networks… why bother with an additional service… so I guess Youtube is next.
