I have been using rsync scripts to a dreamhost account for this type of backup for a couple years. Now this article has me worried. I guess I should start looking more deeply into Amazon's S3 solution. - Mark Anderson

I just checked the cost of S3 and at minimum it would be $45/month for my critical data. If I wanted to backup all my data I'm looking at $112/month. Right now I'm paying $120/year for 300GB of storage at dreamhost. I tried Mozy.com and it's cost competitive. It just doesn't allow rsync from my NAS and the service is very slow and frequently timeouts. So back to the drawing board. - Mark Anderson

Jun 9th: I just received an email tonight from Dreamhost saying I'm breaking their TOS and I can either cancel my account, delete my backup files, or pay for a new service they are offering to store my backups at a cost of $0.20 per GB per month. 64-bit apps are harder to write. Given the complexity of Photoshop, I can see why they wouldn't want to overhaul everything. Although at some point they'll have to do it. 64-bit is the future. - Raoul Pop

They're not harder to write... if you are careful from the start. It's when you have to port a 32-bit application where developers assumed certain word/pointer sizes that you have a hard time. Biomass (waste) to ethanol is an obviously attractive idea. However, variability of the feedstock seems to almost always be a bigger problem than predicted. There is a company with a name including "Masada OxyNol" that promised waste to energy for NYC in the 90's and I still see it refered to in future tense (and sold off to the Dominican Republic) in 2008. Gasification can also be a probelm for feedstocks that are more liquid-y than predicted (almost all of them). I hope I missed something and they have something better, but I don't see convincing evidence that makes this different. - Clare Dibble
