But it does work well for identifying hot topics. One option is to attach comments to an item and use the comments as a timeline. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
Yah, we should fix this, especially for events like this. - Bret Taylor
Plurk is frustrating if you are following more than a few dozen ppl. - Rafe Needleman
Bret, when is FF getting Plurk support? - Rafe Needleman
I actually had success just following the main "Friends" feed because you catch all the new posts there, and it's close to a "newest first" at least. I still don't get Plurk. - Jesse Stay
Louis: I am a big fan of Yovi's work. I enjoy color pictures too. As a retired analyst I appreciate what he does. His quick rise to the Techmeme leader board is a testament to his ability and the niche he fills. Yea Nuvi. Note: I would post his to your room but that feature is disabled. - Russellreno
Take away: The FF Post to Rooms feature only works if you highlight text before hand. - Russellreno
Or, the only book they have is an obviously unread copy of "Tropic of Capricorn" on their coffee table, leave immediately; it's just a prop. - Ginger Makela
Yeah, always check for binding creases and seams. If you're looking at pristine copies of Sun Tzu's Art of War or Mitch Albom's "Five People You Meet in Heaven," that's a magazine reader right there. - Mark Trapp
I visited a place a friend was house-sitting once. It took me ages to realise what was wrong. Eventually I realised there was not a single book - David Owens
What do you do if they have books, but dog-ear the pages? - Kevin Fox
yikes. I only buy photography books anymore. There's plenty of Nietzsche on the shelf though from years back. - Thomas Hawk
The phrase 'wall-to-wall Dan Brown' just made me die a little inside. - Akiva Moskovitz
Kevin, dog-earring can be a good sign. It says: I love books and reading, but don't regard them as sacred objects. However, I don't approve of dog-earring library books. - Ginger Makela
What if its wall to wall O'Reilly Animal Books? - six mokes
Thomas, photography books are fantastic. My husband buys only photo books, and they're great investments: limited print runs and only one edition, usually. It's fun to look them up on amazon to see what pristine copies are going for on the used market. Wish I had an app to track that! - Ginger Makela
Ah, that's my problem. They see all the computer books on my shelves and they just leave! :) - Morton Fox
Five People You Meet in Heaven does not count. Nor do audio books. If all you see are audio books, run faster. (or wall-to-wall Dan Brown. :D ) - edythe
Warning: I have too many self help books. - Russellreno
the next question is, is the inverse of this question true? - edythe
Ginger: I found a photo book from 1981. The appreciation doesn't cover the shipping. Your post did move me off my chair though. - Russellreno
I have been using rsync scripts to a dreamhost account for this type of backup for a couple years. Now this article has me worried. I guess I should start looking more deeply into Amazon's S3 solution. - Mark Anderson
I used to rsync to Dreamhost too; now I use dropbox though. It works REALLY well. I just wish I could pay for more space (since S3 is so cheap anyway). - Benjamin Golub via fftogo
I just checked the cost of S3 and at minimum it would be $45/month for my critical data. If I wanted to backup all my data I'm looking at $112/month. Right now I'm paying $120/year for 300GB of storage at dreamhost. I tried Mozy.com and it's cost competitive. It just doesn't allow rsync from my NAS and the service is very slow and frequently timeouts. So back to the drawing board. - Mark Anderson
Jun 9th: I just received an email tonight from Dreamhost saying I'm breaking their TOS and I can either cancel my account, delete my backup files, or pay for a new service they are offering to store my backups at a cost of $0.20 per GB per month. So they are now even more expensive that S3. I guess I will be canceling my account. - Mark Anderson
I'm guessing that Reykjavík is a more interesting place to visit or live. I wonder why that is, and more importantly, why can't a place like Sunnyvale be interesting? - Paul Buchheit
Hi Paul, I had the best lobsters ever in my life in Reykjavik. Very small lobsters but so tasty, amazing. I loved it and would love to go back there. - Loic Le Meur
The above link on Iceland- worth a read in line with the thread on Reykjavik - viki saigal
The sky in those two pictures is amazing! It makes me want to pack my bags right now. And doesn't Rekkjavik also have Bjork? ;) - Cyndy
I visited Reykjavík a couple years ago and it was a pretty cool town. And the direct flight from SFO was really convenient. I think its biggest problem is that the rest of Iceland is just so utterly spectacular that it's hard to justify spending more that just a small fraction of the time in the capital. - Simon
The Johannes Kjarval collection at the Kjarvalsstadir museum is well worth a visit - "Kjarval is famous for his interpretation of Icelandic nature. He captured the beauty and the mystical quality of the land. His landscapes express a comprehension of nature based on the gift for entering into it and perceiving it from within, along with a strong sympathy for all living things that inhabit it." (http://tinyurl.com/3u95qf) - Thomas Brox Røst
Sunnyvale features the global world headquarters for louisgray.com. I assume that outweighs anything Reykjavik has to offer... - Louis Gray
Ah, my old home Sunnyvale. The Wikipedia article Paul posted has a nice panorama of Reykyavik. - Mike Reynolds
Let me know if you figure out what makes a place interesting. I can't get your line paraphrased as "we only know our own life, and then only barely." Out of my head. - Clare Dibble
Don't underestimate the climate difference :) - Michael Bravo
We all know that Microsoft sucks when it comes to a consistent experience (they can't even get this right inside Windows, so why should we expect consistency and a great experience on the Web?) Branding? That's why Microsoft wanted Yahoo so badly. No one normal knows what Windows Live really means. It was stupid to extend the Windows brand onto the Web. - Robert Scoble
MS needs a class in Branding. They are a mess on the web. MSN? Live? Office Live? Who is running their internet marketing division? That person needs to be fired, someone needs to clear out all of that shit and start over. Just a complete mess!!! - Jacob Burke
That may be the reason they want Yahoo! that much. It's a pretty solid brand they could use to order the mess they now have. - Hernan Garcia via twhirl
Ah the YHOO thing makes much more sense know. I've never liked MSFT (Apple user) but as a marketer, their branding sucks. Releasing new products that are buggy and behave inconsistenly is also damaging in the the long run. - Sally Church via Alert Thingy
Microsoft suffers from the same lame strategy as the World Domination fanatics of yesteryear who wanted to own all the property available. By doing this, they've spread themselves too thin and the enemy has captured most of all of their castles!! stupids! - Susan Beebe
Everything MSFT do is ugly and clumsy, it seems. - John Clifton
64-bit apps are harder to write. Given the complexity of Photoshop, I can see why they wouldn't want to overhaul everything. Although at some point they'll have to do it. 64-bit is the future. - Raoul Pop
They're not harder to write... if you are careful from the start. It's when you have to port a 32-bit application where developers assumed certain word/pointer sizes that you have a hard time. There are often implicit assumptions that are not easily caught without a lot of painful debugging. - James Vasak
"Global warming is an issue that my administration is, is very concerned about - deeply. Deeply in a deep, kind of concerned way. It's, uh, I don't - I start my day and I think about the warming of the globe and how we could get it warmer." - April Buchheit
bush: liberals and god-less tax raisers are trying to make me look bad by using such things as "facts" and "scientific data."
staff: mr president, you can't say they're using facts.
bush: yeah, why?
staff: cause facts are real, they can't be disputed.
bush: how do you know that? - Chris White
in fact adam and eve drove an excursion - MG Siegler
Biomass (waste) to ethanol is an obviously attractive idea. However, variability of the feedstock seems to almost always be a bigger problem than predicted. There is a company with a name including "Masada OxyNol" that promised waste to energy for NYC in the 90's and I still see it refered to in future tense (and sold off to the Dominican Republic) in 2008. Gasification can also be a probelm for feedstocks that are more liquid-y than predicted (almost all of them). I hope I missed something and they have something better, but I don't see convincing evidence that makes this different. - Clare Dibble
