Christopher: I watch a lot of media. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, New York Times, tons of different newspaper and blogs. We only see a very small slice of the world on our media. It's not just about China, either. We get tons of celebrity news, but not much about the world.

India's got a great deal of problems that are not going to be easily solved with the type of gov't in place and the lack of leaders this country has. I watch almost no TV, but get my news online. One thing I really like about online news is that it is so easy to read what I want to, and skim past the stuff that doesn't interest me. Of course that works both ways. I've not the slightest interest in the celebrity bimbos, so skip that myself, but I could read that and nothing else. I check into a few UK sources too - BBC, Guardian, Telegraph. They give a more balanced world view, in my opinion, than domestic US media.

As someone who works everyday with an offshore Indian development team I'd agree with Pankaj's comments. We (the west) are still outsourcing based on cost but in many cases the offshore teams (particularly in India) aren't mature enough to deal with us. Some of the issues I see regularly are a shortage of good lead developers but loads of green ones, coupled with a culture that promotes teaching over learning.

I doubt Americans have any less interest in learning. Their government doesn't pay for their bookstores (or wait, maybe they do - they're called Libraries - I've seen some pretty big ones), so they make wiser economic decisions.

Visiting a bookstore in China is one of the scariest things I did when I lived over there. Not only are their wall after wall of business books (Inventory Management Guide vol. 6, Elements of Human Resources Management in low wage industries, etc) but there is a growing number of 'creative' works coming out. When the creative ideas developed 'in house' in China meet the factory powerhouses, oh holy crap. It won't just be Joe the factory guy looking for work...

The story perpetuated by the media continues to be one of the Chinese government "controlling" everything, especially information, in China. However, I think the vast amount of information out there is simply uncontrollable, despite whatever firewalls are in place. great that you recognize shortcomings of MSM take on China, but it's what sells. Also, bear in mind that your trip (although you met with perfect people for such a trip) was a "survey course" at best. It takes a ton of effort and time to get perspective on the place and to dig through what people in meetings are actually saying. The truth is probably somewhere in-between. I am personally so happy that you made the trip, and that you will hopefully be a fair-broker of China-related information out there.

A nation which ridicules intellectual achievement is heading for immense economic problems.

By the way, one thing I recommend for any visitor to China is visit a bookstore if possible (even the ones in airports). You'll be shocked at all the business management / capitalism books you'll find (and one tiny shelf of Communist stuff).

Renee (7 mos pregnant) and I were talking about this inexplicable cultural terror of radiation among pregnant Chinese women. Refusing to watch TV or use a computer for several months seems quite extreme to me, but is absolutely the accepted norm in China. I suppose they also ask China Mobile to shut down nearby cell-sites and refuse to use electric light bulbs?!?! To each her own...

When you get tired of seeing a particular FriendFeed item, just click "hide." Don't worry, that just hides it from your view. You can see hidden items at the bottom of the page.

Once in a while you'll see a jerk in here. Here's how to deal with them: visit their page, then at the top you'll see a link titled "Block." Don't be afraid to block jerks. That helps keep the community clean of drama for everyone. Heck, don't be afraid to block me if you don't want to see me anymore. You define yourself by who you follow and who you allow into your life. One thing: you can still see people you blocked in the "Everyone" tab. They will still show up in searches you do there.

Feel free to use the hide button as you read items, even if it is a topic your interested in. Don't worry, if more conversation occurs on the topic, it will pop back up in your feed again. I like to use this to "clear" the screen, so it isn't so cluttered and I am not re-reading something I have already seen.

FriendFeed's worst attribute is that it rewards people who visit often. Click "F5" to refresh your browser's page. This is especially important if you're following lots of people, or are watching the "Everyone" page (it changes every few seconds).

Even if you don't have an iPhone (I have a KU990), try fftogo.com. It works on most java enabled phone browsers and is a great way to fill in time when in lines

Friendfeed defaults to showing not only the content of those who you are subscribed to, but items that were found interesting by your friends by other people. This is called 'Friend of a Friend' - If you would rather not see these entries, click 'Hide' on one of them, then use 'See more options for hiding items like this' - there will be an option to hide items from Friends of your Friend.

I was coming from the angle that social media software is just that. Software. It's the people who use it that should take initiative to build their own friends right? Robert, i get what you mean. But perhaps the next step to this should be a default set of friends based on various interests or sectors and not limited to social media or tech? It took me time to gather up a list of folks of interest to me (China and food. heh) so yea, that'd be cool if there were default lists by interests. That would be cool in helping these apps scale I think. Ok, where's Guy. Looks like Alltop needs to come up with a FriendFeederati by sector. heh.

I agree with having the FriendFeederati by sector idea too. I don't think it's a bad thing to give suggestions. As I just shared, I find it odd when people use social networking software and say they only add people they already know. Doesn't social networking partly neccessitate meeting new people?

I actually don't believe in "default" people, though I really share that idea of "interests". I humbly still think that the more you share interests with someone the more he/she should be recommended to you :)

Not lame at all. By having a few uber-users I can subscribe to as I sign-up, I immediately see the benefit of FF. I don't have to go rummaging around trying to find Scoble, or Riley or Arrington or Gray or anyone else to see what the service might be like if I work really hard at following people. a) I actually want to follow them (and so do you, admit it), b) I'll add others anyway. Why is it lame to make it easier to create social connections and leverage shared information?

Long story short, FF took the writers approach. Show, don't tell. How many times have you heard someone say, 'Oh, you'll get Twitter when you follow enough people.' Seems to me FF took that to heart and figured out how to make that happen a whole lot faster. And by using 'high node' users, the friend of friend product brings diversity to your feed quickly, even more so if you wind up subscribing to some of those friends.

AJ Kohn, no i get it. Maybe my initial reaction of lameness was directed more towards the uber-users being of one sector. Would be nice to have social media adopted faster by non-tech folks. No offense against the sector. But again, it took me 3 months on Twitter to help aggregate all the folks interested in China together. Would be nice if there was a jumping off point for other sectors. I'm pretty sure Guy is working on it now as we speak judging from his reply to my earlier tweet. Yay. :)

Christine Lu: I get the sector thing. It is highly tech focused. But ... again, the friend of friend feature does a lot to defray that don't you think? And if you subscribe to a few of those friends you can quickly build diversity. I think of it more as 'high node' people, those with many connections - influencers. They can deliver diversity at a higher rate, thus they are the defaults. It's not perfect which is why I'm trying to get some authors/writers to join - an under-represented crowd IMO.

Seriously, though, this FriendFeed environment feels like an ocean full of screaming plankton, without apparent order or guidance. Somebody please figure this out for me. The "uber users" approach was helpful at the start, months ago, but it's easy to get 'stuck' at that beginning stage.

I agree with Christine here. Social software certainly depends on friends and get better the more frinds you add, but starting with some people who I might not even know is kind of lame.

LinkedIn takes up far less time than other SNS, but probably has returned more value (to me) than other SNS. I only check on LinkedIn once a month or so, but usually come up with a useful new connection.

The method to comment and reply is much better on friendfeed, I think this definitly should either be bought by twitter or find a way to cross integrate them better. I see the option to "also send this comment as an @reply twitter from jpstephens" but thats not EXACTLY what I mean

You could try Mahalo share to post to a lot of your socials at once, but wouldn't this create a bit of a spam effect to FF if all of those socials are showing up here? Interested to hear comments from anyone with that experience, because of course you don't want to spam your FF friends, but not everyone is using FF... conundrum

yeah there's real potential. but it's so damn hard to manage your friend list! same as with twitter - this is a huge barrier to the usability of the site. there should be a subscribe/unsubscribe button next to every post from anybody.

And for those of us who aren't honest enough to publicly admit this, it takes us months to use FriendFeed effectively. FriendFeed's concept does take a bit to grasp at first because we are sooo used to Twitter (uni-directional, broadcast communications tool) and FF is truly a multi-directional comm tool designed to illicit conversation around cool stuff you share via FF directly or thru nearly 50 Social Media "feeds" you can port over here. I love FF and have been super happy since I joined back in March! ;o). Glad you're here and having fun!!

I still don't get it. There seems to just be too much noise. I get crap from people I don't know and I'm not following. Every item that hits my feed and has any comments takes up stupid amounts of space so it's hard to scan through. Twitter is just light weight and simple, and in that way it's more effective. If you could have a 1 or 2 line summary for each item then it'd be great, but as it is it's cluttered and overpowering, and I only have 6 follows, I can't imagine what it's like with 100s
