The difference between good and great webdesign is relatively small. The average person may not be able to explain the tangible differences that make up great design, but they can usually spot a design they like. By examining some awesome sites, I’ll attempt to put my finger on some of the small details that make up the difference. A little while back I wrote an article about the 4 Principles of Good Design for Websites, this article is somewhat of a continuation of those principles. In that article I went into detail about the important roles that contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity play in webdesign. This article will piggy back on those principles as I examine 6 ways you can take your webdesign from good to great.

The 960 Grid System is an effort to streamline web development workflow by providing commonly used dimensions, based on a width of 960 pixels. The premise of the system is ideally suited to rapid prototyping, but it would work equally well when integrated into a production environment. There are printable sketch sheets, design layouts, and a CSS file that have identical measurements.

CopyPasteKiller is a free tool for .Net developers that will analyze a directory of code and find large chunks of similar code in multiple locations. This similar code can then be refactored either by creating a base class or by reducing the protection level on the method so it can be called by multiple classes. Technically, CopyPasteKiller should be called CopyPasteFinder because its up to you to remove the duplicate code, but CopyPasteFinder isn't nearly as fun a name as CopyPasteKiller.

Just a question. How do you use Facebook: Just for people who you've met and "know", or do you have all your social contacts there, for an example "web buddies"?
I really only use facebook to occasionally keep up with a few of the people i went to high school with.
- Internet's Tad
I don't really use it much. It's turning into MySpace, with all the juvenile apps, and quizzes

Primarily people I know and have met offline, with the only exceptions being two online friends I've "known" for 5-6 years.

For me, FB = people I know personally (high school, college, work, and current friends+. FriendFeed/Twitter = people I don't know personally ("web buddies")

Thought I'd try it like every other Social site, but quickly became mostly just ppl I know IRL, with less than a half-dozen exceptions -- friendlier ppl from here I friended (semi-desperately) early on FB.

Since Facebook has the widest spectrum of talent and genius, I find that I can converse and share on a wider variety of subjects than are typically possible on the lesser networks. As such, I tend to use it more as a homebase, with other networks wired into it. It helps to have started with an large base of intelligent users with a wide variety of interests. It's demise would be the most tragic of the social networks, imho.

Balsamiq Mockups intentionally uses hand-drawn UI elements, so that people don't get attached to “that pretty color gradient” or think that your mockup has actual code behind it and is “practically done”. Using Balsamiq Mockups feels like you are drawing, but it's digital, so you can tweak and rearrange controls easily, and the end result is much cleaner. Teams can come up with a design and iterate over it in real-time in the course of a meeting.

Service to make image hosting even easier for bloggers. The images hosted on the site are private, only the uploader gets the links, and, if needed, the service can do some very basic image editing before uploading the images to help ensure that your images are the right size when you embed them on your blog. It’s a very simple service, but one that many bloggers are going to wonder how they lived without.

I hope Angelina gets Oscar for the changelling . maybe Kate Winslet for Reader , and I hope Brad pitt gets ocar for Benjamin Button but I'm sure he won't
- Viva Vida
Me neither but like to see the Brits do well of course. Kate Winslet is probably our best bet? I have to say I'd like to see Heath Ledger win.
