"Los Angeles city councilman Dennis Zine thinks Jackson's family and AEG Live--the promoter of Jackson's now-canceled London concerts which owns the Staples Center where the service will be held and Nokia Center where it will be simulcast--should cover the costs, especially because LA is facing $530m budget deficit. Zine, who once tried to pass legislation against paparazzi chasing celebs, said: If the Jackson family's gonna spend $25,000 on a gold casket, I would think that AEG and the Jackson family could help defray the costs so it's a safe and secure environment for mourners that want to come. He's got that right. It's estimated that the cost to the city in police overtime, street services, sanitation, and related services will be over $2.5 million and rising by the hour, which is more than what the Lakers' championship parade would have cost the financially beleaguered city. Only the Lakers' picked up half the tab, and private donations covered almost all the rest. The Jacksons and AEG have not been so forthcoming."

Interesting. L.A. is hugely in the hole. $2.5 million on this seems a touch excessive. Maybe they should have considered charging for the tickets to this event to cover the city's costs.
- Thomas Hawk
I don't see how the family should be expected to pay directly for government services that are provided for free to every other citizen. Granted this event is bigger than the average funeral but I don't see how you can realistically bill the Jacksons for it.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm not sure that the family should necessarily pay except to the extent that they took 9,000 tickets for the event for themselves (who has 9,000 close personal friends?). Personally I think whoever gets the tickets should pay. If the family wants 9,000 tickets (roughly half of the tickets to the event) then they should be billed for that. If the general public wants the rest then they...

I think the good thing the Jackson family should do is foot part of the bill. Yes, normally government services around a funeral are provided for free, but this memorial goes a bit above and beyond a normal funeral.
- Rene Wirtz
Of course the Jackson family does have ample funds to pay for it and it would seem to be a good thing for them to do. Personally I don't think taxpayers should foot a dime for this. I think the family should have been told in the first place that if they wanted a memorial service of this magnitude that they'd either have to pay for costs of it, arrange for the donations for it, or not be allowed to have it.
- Thomas Hawk
And you know they're recording this and will be selling it shortly. Disgraceful.
- amygeek
It looks like MJ's family may be going the way of MLK's family. . trying to make a dime off their dead relative at every opportunity possible.
- Dave Roth
But LA will make more sales tax from all the people flocking there to the funeral.
- Dawn
maybe Dawn, but I doubt anywhere near to the costs. Certainly they could discount the cost by projected sales tax revenues. I bet a fair amount of the people at the memorial though are in the immediate area and did not fly in just for the event.

Who knows if these numbers are accurate but here's an L.A. Times story claiming a $4 million boost to the L.A. economy because of this event. http://www.latimes.com/busines... From the article: "Hotels, restaurants, tourist destinations and airlines reported a massive jump over the weekend in business and reservations, and they foresee a continued surge that they hope will jolt the local economy -- at least for a few days."
- Mike Doeff
interesting, maybe the hotels should pick up part of the cost.
- Thomas Hawk
I guess a way they could have avoided this was to charge for the tickets and explicitly state that it will go towards the cost of the service.

Yes, the sales tax and service taxes collected during the last 2 weeks since his death far surpass whatever costs the city will incur for police staffing of the memorial. I wonder if the city will reimburse the Jackson family for any portion of those proceeds, since they could have easily transferred all of this to, oh Las Vegas for instance. Moreover, why all this grandstanding about a...

Dale: my producer, Rocky helped build his studio when he was 12-years-old. His dad built it, which is one reason we got in, but the real reason was to talk to his audio engineer about how much quality of his music is lost at CD-quality (Neil wants people to be able to listen to music recorded at 192 khz per second -- CD's are recorded at 44.1 khz). We listened to his music recorded at 192 and then on CD and it's not even close. The quality difference is so extreme.

- Duncan Riley
I just joined SmugMug last week - love it! My favorite part is that I can upload RAW images and use it as a pure archive for my photos. Flickr then can serve as my social distribution.
- Jesse Stay
I've now got a SmugMug account. The recommendation is to get a Canon 40D. I am sure there are an array of opinions on this as well?
- Louis Gray
Take a look at the public SmugMug photos on FriendFeed. http://friendfeed.com/public... SmugMug offers unlimited storage capacity, full-screen high resolution for photos, customized galleries, and outstanding Mac support, from what I understand. So far, Flickr is not as strong. http://friendfeed.com/public...

fwiw, i'm a flickr user and a mac user and i'm very pleased. appletv hooks right in. not complaints here.

@Louis - I own the Canon 40D and you can't go wrong. The thing makes me look like a pro. You won't be disappointed. Good luck!
- Ron Emrick
40D works well unless you want to spring for a 5D. Make sure you get a good lens too!
- Jauder Ho
I'm in the minority, but my feeling is that the higher-end point and shoots end up better. No, you wont' get the amazing portraits. But in the time it takes to get everything out and set up JUST right, you've missed the moment.
- Cyndy
40d is nice but the canon g9 is a good walk a round point and shoot. I like Flickr over smug, though I have yet to really dive into it.
- Don Martelli
Cyndy - the problem is with a lot of point & shoots, the shutter response is too slow to capture rapidly moving kids. Using a SLR in this case helps. I guess one could use a rangefinder =)

Is there a reason for smugmug over flickr or picasa?
- Bryan Clark
IMO, the SmugMug interface wins hands-down over flickr. Gorgeous, AJAXy, user-selectable resolution, etc. You definitely get what you pay for.
- Brian Pharris
The Canon G9 camera falls between the point and shoot and the digital SLR, a great choice for the new dad. Congratulation by the way.
- Bob Gannon
@Louis firstly although not a Dad I have a very large family and all my sisters have at least 2-3 kids. Lots of Nieces and nephews. So I have some experience of every kind of parent, from camera crazy to camera+camcorder to just a picture here and there. All survived without HD, and even digital until a couple years ago. So this is my experience to you. There will be lots of things you will enjoy, taking pictures, making videos, post-production etc, but most of all you.....
- Roger Kondrat
@Louis continued you are likely to be like most parents (99%) and that is you won't have time to make many DVDs of trips or birthdays because there will always be some event, location, or sport you will need to attend. And the list goes on. You will be busy. Also you will have to carry diapers, bottles of milk, carriages, etc, and when you are done with the diapers it will be bottles of water and sport bags.......
- Roger Kondrat
@Louise.. Where am I going with this? Buy a point and shoot my friend a good one like a Sony or a Canon. I buy Canon's by my gf's brother also a gadget guy buys Sony's and loves them. Samsung is making amazing camera's too, in fact they just released an HD capable point and shoot. Buy a point and shoot and you will have more memories and you will enjoy those memories as they happen because won't be digging around for the right tool and complaining when it wasn't available.... Good luck! :)
- Roger Kondrat
PS. I like Flickr and have never seen the reason for SmugMug (yet). What is your reasoning? ;)
- Roger Kondrat
Roger, I like SmugMug because I can store the full sized, original images I took, in RAW format even. It's a great archival tool. Flickr's social capabilities are much better though, so I end up using both.
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
Louis, yes you have to join SmugMug. I use Flickr for public photos and SmugMug for private. Great for archiving too, no worries about the hard drive crashing or house burning down.
- Elliott Ng
The G9 still has slow shutter response. If you are looking to save some money, you could look at the Canon XSi which is pretty darn nice. Just a tad small for my hands. Re: SmugMug, I'll say that they have awesome customer service. Besides, they offered free tickets to see Batman on IMAX last Friday! (Disclaimer: I did take advantage of this offer but am still impressed with how they engage with their customer base)
- Jauder Ho
@Jesse Stay I had no idea that Flickr was not storing the full originals I thought that was part of the paid service.. I will check that out and if that is the case I will be very upset. Cool about the RAWs though as my gf and I were talking about SM for that reason, nice to have confirmation of that feature.
- Roger Kondrat
Roger, Flickr does store the full-resolution photos and with a paid account, you have full access to them. Smugmug has the additional feature to store the raw files if you pay extra for it.
- Ole Begemann
Smugmug vs. Flickr in one sentence: Smugmug is the better gallery site, Flickr has the better and more active community. Boils down to how you want to present your photos and how much interaction with other members you want.
- Ole Begemann
Flickr may store the originals but highly compresses them. YMMV.
- Jauder Ho
from twhirl
Flickr does not touch the files you upload in any way.

Personally I'd try to wait for the new Canon 5D probably due out at Photokina in Germany in Sept. In the meantime I'd probably buy a used Canon 10D or 20D on eBay with a 50mm f/1.4 lens or the 28-135 image stabilized zoom. You could probably buy this for a lot less than the 40D and wait until the new 5D drops into your price range. The full frame sensor of the 5D is a huge jump up over the 40D. Even if you didn't want to pay up for the new 5D, the old 5D prices will drop when the new model is released.
- Thomas Hawk
Flickr recently increased their photo size limit to 20MB for Pro accounts. Free accounts get 10MB. I've noticed lately though that Flickr has still been accepting my images over 20MB. My guess is that they decided to increase file size and not actually block images over 20MB because they realize that they will need larger images that can be sold through their new partnership with Getty. Flickr doesn't support RAW.
