Good grief. Redefining photogenic, are we?
- James (!?)
James, you're comment is unsettlingly ambiguous. I'm going to assume you mean "redefining" as in "raising the standard?" Yes, I'll go with that.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Oh! Indeed! Raising the bar is what I mean. :-) (Thought that would be obvious. My bad.)
- James (!?)
I think abdellah's original comment was asking why the couple WASN'T same-sex.
- Brian Chang
so please take note of the following, first it wasn't intended to be homophobic I was just to make a point that not all couple are hetero, second point accusing my comment beeing homophobic without refrefing to me in dm or something else is abusive.
- abdellah
@brian you get it, but what can I say, I think that some jump to earlier to conclusion, @bret hope that as you deleted my comment you will edit or delete your owns refering to me as some one who make homophob comment thank you.
- abdellah
I agree, it is awesome! (not biased, whatsoever)
- Jeanette Bosman
@Erica!! really all what I saay was "why the pic wasn't a pic of a homo couple a man and man) damn FF is too masculin to be shown as women that all, for me there is nothing homophob in my sentence, but accusing me beeing homophob is really sad. but now I have to ask a question is it homophob to replace the pic above by a pic showing a homo couple, this is really sad, for me it is the...
- abdellah
abdellah, if you don't mind my asking, is English your first language? I think part of what may have caused the misunderstanding is that, at least in the parts of the United States where I have lived, the term "homo" is almost always used in a derogatory sense.
- Brian Chang
ha ok, yes english is my 2 language, homo is a french terms= gay, there is nothing degratory in saying homosexual.
- abdellah
I've been dying for FB to drink some of the FF cool aid!! Let's hope the integration or technology transfer goes smoothly. Can't wait to see what comes out of it. I think it is a testament to the FB team that they saw and appreciated the same power off FF we all did.
- Phil Ashman
What? No lawyers in suits? Mark's setting a pretty low bar on the dress code for this sort of thing...:)
- Tomas Remotigue
Our lawyers were wearing shorts actually -- no air conditioning at their office on Sundays I guess.
- Paul Buchheit
Zuckerberg's the only one from FB who could be bothered to show up?
- Andy Bakun
American big business such a formal affair
- Robert Higgins
Contrary to popular misconception, lawyers don't actually enjoy wearing suits. Haul us into work on a Sunday, and we'll definitely be dressing comfortably. :)
- Brian Chang
Andy, the person on the left is Vaughan Smith from Facebook. Sanjeev (the fourth FriendFeed founder) is not pictured because he was boarding an airplane.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, that's so awesome. FB's an awesome company to do business with.
- Jesse Stay
Hey Paul congratulations - FriendFeed has been leading the way since its inception. Are the photos you've posted copy-protected or could I use them in a story on the deal?
- Mitch
...congrats.can't wait to see what happens with both FF and FB as a result of this.
- .LAG liked that
Please try to keep Friendfeed like it was if they let you. Either way, congrats on the financials!
- Josh Haley
from iPhone
Congrats and best wishes for the future.
- Jeff Stannard
For $50m you could at least have hired a photographer who doesn't shake so much. :)
- Rodrigo Jaroszewski
FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money!
- laosan
congratulations! keep the innovation coming...
- ozlubling
VERY happy for you guys. Possibly even owe you one or two. Are we getting FriendPhone next?? Think Mark should seriously think about 'Friendbook' :)
- Charlie Anzman
Congratulations to you and your team.
- Maria Niles
just showed the pictures to my students and they were like, "they look like normal people!" Congrats on the deal, onward and upward!
- xxx xxxxx
Congratulations, Paul -- to you and everybody at FF.
- Eric Johnson
Congrats Paul, Bret and the rest of the team, this is awesome news! The big question on everyone's lips is: Who gets to have http://facebook.com/paul? :)
- Fenn
Congrats, and thanks for taking us all on such a terrific ride! Big ups. :)
- Pete Delucchi
You've done a great job! You deserve this and more... Congrats!
- Ricardo J. Valle
now this is what a deal term meeting should look like - file under inspirational -
- mediaeater
Congratulations to everyone at FF. Whose house was the deal made?
- seman
I am sad .. !!! I do not know .. why .. for me its not good news
- Nayan
I call this pic... "Six Happy Dudes & 1,000,000+ Pissed-Off FriendFeeders"
- Brad Williamson
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Looks like Mathew™ has found a UI bug by flooding contiguous characters.
- Jay Cuthrell
I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge?
- Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they?
- Jesse Stay
Congratulations Paul, you should have got more, but I guess $50m is nothing to sneeze at. Have a great wedding anniversary too, I'm sure you both deserve it. Much happiness - :)
- Chris Loft
Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
congrats on building an amazing product and incredibly passionate community! I was mad at first, but then realize that the technology was most likely sold, not the community. I'm hoping ff community will stay somewhat untouched and features that have been built into ff will be ported to fb.
- Derek Coatney
Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow.
- Keith Pelczarski
No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell.
- Shane Gibbons
Congratulations to everyone involved. Well done.
- Darius Dunlap
This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed.
- Colide81 (James)
from iPhone
Congrats to the FF staff, but you'll have to pardon my lack of exuberance. I have mental pictures of being forced to use the FB UI and it makes me sad =(
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Very happy for the Friendfeed team. These pictures say it all.
- Christian Burns
from iPhone
Where are the photos of everyone celebrating? No beer or champagne?
- Shane
Great match-up guys ! The Fabulous Friender Boys ! - Let's see some integrated mashups and extensible apps and FF UI. Given Google and Twitter a run for their money... Looks like they are going to have to "hook-up" now !
- Mike Schmidt
Congratulations Paul and the team! Hopefully we'll still get the same simple UI for FriendFeed. I'm sure however that no matter what you do, things will turn up nicely.
- Ovidiu Predescu
NOOOOO! I _LOVE_ friendFeed and this will change it forever. Yeah - this will improve Facebook. Great deal guys - I can not wait to see how this works out
- Ric Johnson
@Scobleizer: Come on you're a genius and can not realize future of FF? Turkey was one of important countries which is using FF! They asked no one about this! We hate fcking morons and stupid people on facebook, and I'm sure that this post will be real, just read it: http://ff.im/6pRmM
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
But Ahmed you are still being an ass about it, trying to rain on their good times. Go find a hole under the bridge where you belong. You can be sad and not have to come out all bitchy about stuff. Clear thoughtful comments instead of going all into "fuck you" mode.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
OK, that's great. I hope you can be successful at Facebook Dev Team and enjoy spending that money.
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
- mustafa can
Bizim şirket sahipleri konunun belli saatler arasında, belli kıyafetlerle ofiste oturmak değil, yapılan işin niteliği olduğunu analdıkları zaman gelir tabii. Ama bence bu gavurların dediği gibi "When the hell freezes over".

Bakmayın böyle güldüklerine arkada buyuk yatırımcılar olmasa batar gider bunlar..Adamların yatırımcıları işi biliyor...
- Zeki Pehlivan
Great result Paul. In such a short time, millions of users, 1 new interface and a marriage with internets' celebrity. This is a period which you should write down to make it as an on-line business case. You people are really wise businessmen. Nice job, congrats! :)
- Olcayto Cengiz
Not happy happy congrats bullshit from me-I used FF.
- frankiecarl
Frankie, a lot of us use FriendFeed and are concerned about where things are going from here. As I said in my comment above: I'm happy for the staff but displeased with who they chose to sell to. I'm perfectly capable of feeling both emotions at the same time.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
wonderful so normal so ordinary so simple
- Thomas Power
MZ looks like he has just returned from the gym
- Joe Dawson
These guys represent the most talked about entreprises (Ok even more so by geeks in the case of Friendfeed) and they're still in their 20s. We're talking millions of dollars and look how relax they look and casually they're dressed.
- lelapin
Awesome, nice to see they are actually in fact human still.
- Robert Schultz
Great photographs showing the very reason why 99% of all people start their own business - money! Well done and good luck for the future.
- David Jagger
this is so great! congrats paul! im really happy for u guys!
- Jason Pollock
Business is Business and we can only move forward with social-media applications as we herald a new interactive platform. Albeit thanks to the Mothers of all Mothers, Google. Frank Burns
- frank burns
We've been acquired by Facebook! We are really excited about joining the Facebook team. (Note: FriendFeed will continue to operate - see the blog post for details)
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
I am hoping this will lead to nice integration for cross posting! Currently using Twitter App on FB to post and I hate those ff.im links that end up on Facebook.
- Ivan Zlatev
it was good while it lasted, Friendfeed. :(
- holly
"FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being. We're still figuring out our longer-term plans for the product with the Facebook team." Those are NOT encouraging things to read as a FF user.
- Scott of Two Countries
Sniff... not sure if I'm excited about this. But I have enormous respect for the FriendFeed team... so, I assume they believe in the move as more than an exit strategy.
- Michael Leggett
@#$& that's all I have to say. For now.
- Zachary TG
Facebook should have been aquired by Friendfeed. Why they hell would you give up your better product to a worse one? Did none of you give a shit about this service to begin wiht?
- Matthew DeVries
Coolest web 2.0 site I've ever seen & used. I hope things don't derail. Ads will be coming soon, which is fine, but.... then what 's next? Please no quizzes!
- Ben Hanten
Who would have thought that after Facebook were shamelessly being "inspired" by FriendFeed, the inevitable would have happened?
- Tyson Key
I'm pissed off. I wan to throw away the whole Internet :
- DarkBls
Hey guys, keep in mind that Facebook is blocked in workplaces across the nation. 250 million casual users commenting about last night's party does not intelligent conversation make.
- Hector
I really can't see how FB would buy FF only to shut it down. There are way too many innovations and features FF has that FB honestly needs. I'm looking forward.
- Harry Wolff
Oh, this does not make me happy. Not at all! I've stayed off of Facebook intentionally and FriendFeed is my favorite social network. This is like when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees. :>(
- Larry Hawes
i have stopped using FB for the most part and liked FF alot more. now FF will go the way of FB. screwed again.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
Congratulations. Enjoy the new challenges of acquisition, and I'm looking forward to the result!
- Wade Dorrell
Berge Gazen beat your score in Mafia Wars
- Berge Gazen
Enjoy your fat paychecks, guys. You've sold us out.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Bravo Bret! Been following your successes ever since we had the opportunity to work together on the YellowPages.ca / Google Maps Canada deal. Congrats!
- Sebastien
I wished it was Google or even Yahoo!, instead...
- Tyson Key
i really hope ff stays as it is. fb is kinder carder while ff is a great tool.
- jkkmobile
Not sure what to make of this. It could eiter be a big win or a huge fail.
- dorn
It could have been Microsoft, which would have been worse for everyone. :(
- Tyson Key
Can I take this opportunity to say I HATE facebook?
- Alex Scrivener
seems the only ppl happy here are the ones in the biz or who stand to profit from the merger.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I guess we should get ready to get poked by our supposed friends and have various shit thrown at us? Plus 5,000 requests by apps that nearly all suck.
- Joey Gibson
There is zero way this could have been a win for anyone, but the now rich founders.
- Matthew DeVries
If I have to go to FB to use FF then it's a lost cause
- Randy Pollock
Painful. And apparently I completely misunderstood what FF was trying to accomplish both technically and as an organization. I guess Facebook must have dangled a pretty big bag of money in front of them.
- Ken Sheppardson
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! :/
- Tyson Key
I will reserve judgement, i don't like or use FB but if FF maintains it's current goodness i don't care who cuts the checks.
- Steve C
I hope this doesn't turn into an APP filled hunk of crap. I love FriendFeed, it was the untouched gem of microblogging. I don't want Mafia Wars invited in my FriendFeed!!! Congrats on the sale though.
- Jay Farmington
@Philipp: until the new masters start flexing their muscles and bringing in their own people to enforce their own vision.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I read the blog post and one statement stands out to me "FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being." The time being. This is not just bad, I think it may be #FAIL
- berchman
Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.
- Voyagerfan5761
"Relationship Status: It's complicated" comes to mind. ;)
- Tyson Key
Wow, I finally sign up, and read this. This could end up being a very bad thing for FF fans: "Your FriendFeed friend just signed up on this poll, would you like to too?"
- Brian Bommarito
Congrats guys. And thanks for your continuos effort in helping promote and integrate web services, like mine, Wakoopa. That's awesome and I hope FB gets better because of it.
- Robert Gaal
This will give FriedFeed the attention it deserves. Otherwise it would have been a geek thing forever.
- Michael Netsch
Will there be a super poke feature launched tomorrow?
- Matthew DeVries
aw, this sux!! Congrats to the Friendfeed team though!
- acedanger
Does this mean that we'll be seeing an influx of webcam spammers, a la Twitter? Along with abolishment of the rooms feature, crappification of the search feature, and more "privacy features" that really just put more nails in the openness coffin?
- Tyson Key
Some people will do whatever their friends request........
- Michael Muller
I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about?
- Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form.
- Paul Nash
Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this...
- Tarmo Aidantausta
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now.
- Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team!
- Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me.
- Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us
- Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting.
- Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed...
- Tyson Key
I'm turning on my black shirt, my black trouser, my black socks, my black shoes. Although I probably must be happy for you.
- Ton Zijp
NASTY NASTY BAD BAD. But we'll see...
- Daniel Morgan
Given that the FriendFeed team has never been anything but awesome & respectful of its community, I think it's unfair for people to assume that the Facebook acquisition is going to change that.
- Jess Lee
Why in god's name are we flying over this shark?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
- Matthew DeVries
Facebook is like a giant who listens to nobody. Please keep your attitude but I don't think you will be able to do so.
- Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
I don't know, Like it? or dislike it?
- Ömer Balamir
What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether?
- Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step!
- Robin Barooah
Robin, the Facebook users don't want that I'm afraid.
- Rutger Blom
I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. -
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users.
- Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends...
- CannonGod
kafa sayımı yapıp köyü satan ağalar geldi aklıma
- Alper Ömer Esin
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook.
- Zio Bonino
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook?
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.
- Jim Is Not Smart
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything.
- Zio Bonino
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future.
- Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too.
- Vishal Verma
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what?
- paula simoes ☃
"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook.
- Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed!
- Alex Lomas
The FF founders must have know this would be a very unpopular move. Most users I know here are not too fond of FB.
- Rutger Blom
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users" There's a bit of a contradiction in your statement, Bret. Nice try though.
- jcunwired
Now I can break my Internet plan at home.
- DarkBls
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching....
- Rasmus Lauridsen
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there.
- Michael Netsch
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now.
- ayca
It's all about the money. I would have payed a couple of dollars each month to use FF.
- Rutger Blom
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys.
- Chieze Okoye
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done.
- Kevin J Hatton
I'm just surprised, that's all. I'm not saying this is a bad thing (it certainly isn't for the owners of FF). I'm willing to sit back and see what happens.
- Jason Huebel
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users.
- Evan Parker
Born to be sold, like in the old "new economy" era. Remember the late nineties?
- Federico Bolsoman
Sudden desire to check out Strands again... but hey, kudos on the incoming $$ for FF team
- Leslie Poston
This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea.............
- Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on...
- Tate DA FF MVP
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would.
- Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook?
- Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook.
- Andy Bakun
My biggest concern here is that FB has a completely different audience than FF.
- Rutger Blom
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn.
- Jeremy Buff
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone.
- tollie williams
I don't want my FF feed on Facebook :( I use both, but maintain both profiles separate
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Sigh... Happy for the team if this is what they want, but baffled by the move. The users that are going to leave because of this will make FF a graveyard and the users it gains, well... Hello spam? Sorry, but I don't like it.
- Vince DeGeorge
from iPhone
Well, I guess it is time to dismantle my friendfeed. We all know where this is headed. So, so glad I didn't move all my rss feeds from greader to friendfeed like so many cheerleaders suggested.
- Matthew Speicher
Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake.
- Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends!
- Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good.
- ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr...
- Kemal
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.
- Ken Sheppardson
Don, I don't think FB wants to maintain two platforms.
- Rutger Blom
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff?
- Flavio
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future.
- Don Faulkner
from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years.
- Andy Bakun
Once again. I'm happy for the FF team. They worked hard and now collect. That's fair. Wonder if they're sitting in a bubble pool drinking champagne while we cry out here ;-)
- Rutger Blom
trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Quote «Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. Some employees will now report to Cox, others to engineering head Mike Schroepfer. In my opinion that means, long term, the Friendfeed product itself is unlikely to be a big priority.¶ But Facebook is...

- Philipp Lenssen
+1 Kol for the techcrunch article!
- Don Faulkner
from IM
techcrunch: "Cox agreed, noting that Facebook is focused on being a platform and a service, and not just a destination site." I certainly hope so!
- Don Faulkner
from IM
Brilliant move by both Facebook and friendfeed. Congratulations!!! I have theories of what they have planned, but I doubt you would verify any of them. This is going to go so well with their SocialTV which they have been developing. I'm so happy for you!
- Michael Fidler
I don't see what's so bad about it since no one knows right now what the outcome will be, everyone is just making assumptions that could possibly be wrong..... Might help just sitting back and seeing what happens first before complaining.
- ChaCha Fance
Nooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrghh! I´ve resisted getting a facebook acct for so long...
- Thomas Bøhm
ChaCha, if everybody would do that there would not be much discussion would there? This is part of the fun.
- Rutger Blom
I wonder how the discussion over on facebook would compare to this?

Don, I doubt there is any discussion going on there. They're too busy throwing quizes at each other.
- Rutger Blom
Congrats, FF! I'm approaching the situation with cautious optimism. A lot of my friends only share stuff via the Facebook wall/feed, so if Facebook is able to make their feed more like the FF feed (i.e. good, instead of sucktacular) through this acquisition, it's mostly a win for me in the end.
- Brian Chang
At least my Feedburner stats might go back to normal again.

Where will we go for the FFunderCats, bacon memes, and angry artists fighting over photo reshares now? ;)

If anybody has doubts as to what happens to the FriendFeed community or our stored information here, read this statement from Bret (in this thread) "Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users". Now maybe you can see "whats so bad about it" and curb your optimism. Not good.
- jcunwired
Congrats FF. Fix their live feed situation please.
- Edward Barnieh
@josh: do you think FB will throw away all the crap people use? various quiz, pick 5 and so on?
- Flavio
@jc: our data will not go away in the near future. what will be in few months? in a year?
- Flavio
Let's see if you can do a bit better than just not being evil this time around.
- Tim Tyler
Wooohooo!!, seems like we are being sent back to "good" old Facebook. Congrats Bret!!
- Danli
Looks like I'm going to repeat the same thing many others did. My first reaction was "Oh my..." I have refused to join Facebook due to its philosophy while I have been with FriendFeed from the beginning for its. I'm sad and somewhat apprehensive.
- Sean Leather
Congrats. I suppose this means the end of FriendFeed but hopefully a better Facebook.
- Harry Toon
Please say that facebook.com will be shutting down, and the combined company will still be called FriendFeed... I bet it won't happen, though.
- Tyson Key
"Regarding FB/FF - Here's how it's [probably] going to work. You will most likely have an account merge, all of the services FriendFeed supports will now be aggregated on Facebook, and all of your FriendFeed friends will be in a "list" on Facebook. The FF Groups will become Facebook Groups. The FF lists will become Facebook Lists." http://ff.im/6pNxq

Nothing like an early retirement payout :)
- Owen Greaves
Congratulations Bret. For me this merger makes a lot of sense. Facebook will provide the "quantity" of users, which friendfeed deserves :).

- Brian Walsh
Mind blown. Never expected this. I'm also disappointed, yet optimistic at the same time.
- Angus Burton
Kinda curious to see how this will all pan out...although i wouldnt want the friendfeed stuff just integrated into facebook. I feel like im among a group of people who i genuinely share interests with here...dont want to lost that.
- Cassidy
Best case: Facebook will continue to support and develop FriendFeed. Worst case: this is great news for Amplifeeder.
- David Gaw
FAIL. Facebook is the new myspace, and now friendfeed will become a part of that BS. Can't say I'm too surprised because eventually we all sell out. BTW I don't see friendfeed lasting more than the rest of this year, if that. The good news is that we can all be subjected to add 'Are you related to a monkey?' and Blackjack apps while having annoying personal ads on our profile pages. Fuck this shit.
- Tomy Thomson
Well done, well deserved, I hope FB's means and infrastructures empower your guys to even better things. But if quizzes appear in "my" friendfeed, evil things will haunt you and your descendents for 3 generations.

That's too bad. Liked the openness if FriendFeed, and the lack crap that is on Facebook. Once FriendFeed dies, it will be Twitter only.
- Mike D.
Congrats, but concerned that FriendFeed and its tools may disappear. Merging the tools with Facebook seems impossible.
- Mike Reynolds
So, what does the acquisition of FriendFeed by Facebook mean to us, users of both websites: Can I make a friend request from FriendFeed, and be approved for both, on one click
- Reyna Carlos
Exciting news guys. I am actually looking forward to your collaboration with / work for FB. No matter what people may or may not like about FB, it does succeed in reaching a more "diverse" audience compared to most other Web 2.0/social web companies. Paired with your team's excellence in realizing features that succeed in pleasing the geekiest of Web 2.0 affine individuals, I think you are steering towards exciting waters :)
- Mustafa K. Isik
*heart sinks* actually a bit of shock - I think that Facebook will leave Friendfeed as-is but I don't think there is hope for future innovation in Friendfeed since their best superstar team members will be pulled onto 'more important' Facebook issues...
- Pon
And the metastasizing, walled-garden that is Facebook, continues to eat the Web. Bring on Google Wave.

What is the big deal? I think it'll make FF bigger and better. You should be happy about that!
- orionstarr
I am disappointed. I don't want to have to go to Facebook to do what i do here. I can not imagine they will port over all the features we enjoy here. We lose a lot for only a slight benefit to Facebook.

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for.

The community won't be there. Been on FB longer than any other, don't have nearly the relationship or sense of community there that I do here or on Twitter.
- Karoli
Karoli: that is due to the effectiveness of the FF platform and interface, which help to join conversations and find interesting people more so than FB does
- Mike Chelen
Mike: I suspect that FB wants FF for the search possibilities, not the community-building aspects. But we'll see.

i guess congrats are in order, but I'm going to now go and remove everything I have that feeds into FF, and I have to ask -- do I have any rights over my archive? Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Google must jump for twitter while MS fiddle in the sticks with Yahoo. BillG will be back at the MS helm 2012.

- Martynas
Flavio: never heard of lifestream.fm before, but I'm going to go check it out. I'll reiterate, though, that I'm now shy of any service like this, since it can disappear just as it's getting good. I heard about sweetcron.com last night (via http://ff.im/6pR2w). Maybe it's time to move from centralized to distributed again.
- Don Faulkner
Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P
- Don Faulkner
I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.
- Ru Viljoen
I don't understand why everyone is so negative about the situation?

@orionstarr - it's like Starbucks buying your neighborhood coffee shop and saying it still cares about the customers. You know it's just not going to be the same as what you've come to love.
- Robin Barooah
Presumably FF will go on the back burner - and the team will try and "fix" Facebook.

The birth certificate is not a real issue. - Richard Bitting
Question is not whether he is a citizen, but a natural-born citizen (the qualification to be president). I don't know why they don't just settle this though. All this mess just to see a piece of paper. Seems like the money could be better spent elsewhere (on both sides).
- Brian Milby
They HAVE settled it. The state of Hawaii has released a certified copy of his birth certificate. The conservatives then claimed that the certificate was bogus because of some issue with the fonts and layout of the certificate, even though it was issued by the state.
- Trent Hamm
I think he was born in Hawaii but I don't know what is being hidden. Two men had their orders to deploy revoked so that they would not have standing in a lawsuit questioning Obama's qualifications to be president. So basicly any soldier that does not want to be deployed just has to claim to be a Birther.

- Dileepa Prabhakar
Dileepa: I don't know the answer to that. But the demos on Monday (I have a bunch of video coming) were shown to me in Firefox. So maybe that's our answer right there.
- Robert Scoble
James: so you think it will sit on top of Linux or something? Or just be a new flavor of Linux?
- Paul Salzman
Linux flavor of Chrome, thus far not arrived yet
- polou/indigo_bow
Paul: I'd look at Android as a precursor and say yes its going to use a google refined linux kernel, and I believe the post even says a windowing system. I'll check TC again to be sure brb.
- James Watters
Paul: I bet there will be some customization of Linux underneath Google's Chrome OS. I'm intrigued and can't wait to see what they will do with it.

Google says the software architecture will basically be the current Chrome browser running inside “a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel.” (quoting TC)
- James Watters

"a new windowing system" leaves the door open for a greater level of abstraction away from the kernel for sure. Probably still with some access to files, devices, etc on the local hardware though which a browser alone would be a clumsy solution too.

Robert you managed to convert a complete google night into a complete MS night :)
- Kiran Patchigolla
James: it's been a while since I've felt compelled to do more than five videos at a Microsoft press conference. See ya on Monday.
- Robert Scoble
sameer: That will be mimicking existing Google Docs feature. Google Wave is at a completely different level and I am not sure if Microsoft is up to doing something like that.
- Dileepa Prabhakar
Till Monday it is, I'm thinking I'll even blog it.
- James Watters
Wave might act as the collaboration platform on the OS. But that leads to another question. Will the OS be tied to Google accounts for login?
- Jayasimhan Masilamani
Dileepa: Let's see, I think there's potential for implementation of realtime collaboration across the web based and desktop offerings of Office that could be of big mainstream impact. It's got to be something related to Office, Robert talks about the "$14 billion business" - The only other Microsoft business I know of that's that big is Windows.
- sameer
sameer: I said that Microsoft has 14 billion dollar businesses. Plural, not singular, but I also said it was one of Microsoft's primary businesses. That narrows it down a bit, yes.
- Robert Scoble
My guess is a MS hardware that will shake the netbook market!!
- Krishnan Subramanian
So that's a Win7 RTM announcement, combined with Web Office. If Web Office will be free to use, the combination of W7 Starter with Web Office will be a huge notebook hit.
- Kirill Petrovsky
If ChromeOS was meant to counter MS, then the logical MS announcement would be some kind of OS project, like maybe a combination of Microsoft Singularity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... ) combined with Silverlight for NetBooks or mobiles.
- Ray Cromwell
MS Web Office for sure: Scoble said it runs on Chrome and Firefox and it's a multi billion business. Actually, MS Office accounted for 18-19B $ in 2008.
- Jérôme Flipo
I fear that if the tech side of their release if good (but whatever the pricing), Google Apps isn't ready for the fight.
- Jérôme Flipo
Microsoft announces the cloud OS? I'm still not sure about a Google OS though.
- Burcu Dogan
Web Office in Silverlight, together with a mobile version that means we get Silverlight on WinMo and maybe even IPhone would be a win for me
- Ian Blackburn
I cannot wait...:-) but I DO have a clue...
- Eric Denekamp
Lots of people suggesting Office-in-browser but if that were it why would Robert be under embargo given they've already announced it and demo'd it? I'm not saying it ISN'T Office-in-browser but if it is then something doesn't add up!
- Jamie
Good point Jamie - the two primary business in MS are Office and Windows (in terms of revenue anyway), so perhaps this is more to do with a Windows OS in the cloud? How would that look?
- Ian Blackburn
Initially, Google VS Live, Then Chrome Vs IE & Google Vs Bing, finally its Windows VS Chrome OS
- Michael_techie
Ummm... are they announcing an online version of MS Office like Google Docs?
- prolificdyslexic
that's why I do not subscribe to Scoble - too many comments on his articles, too much noise
- Павел Романовский
I don't see any noise in here. Interesting conversation!
- Robert Scoble
The MS guy at Portland Cloud Camp said Azure was going to be released very, very <wink, wink> soon. #cloudcampPDX
- Gary Walter (gwalter)
All google apps platform out of beta yesterday, now Chrome Os.. Is definitely the answer to Seven + Silverlight/OfficeOnLine Monday ;)
- CantorJF
from iPhone
@gwalter You’re maybe right. The front end would be MS Gazelle, and the back end would be Azure.
- Bram Pitoyo
Microsoft is finally putting the Zune out of it's (and out) misery and killing it? :)
- Diego Barros
Office Web Apps release to public beta is well overdue - first promised for end of 2008. If this is embargoed then it must involve something new. ScottGu hinted that Silverlight 4 was already in development. SL3 is released this Friday. So maybe SL4 will be released,in beta with a beta of Office Web Apps showing some SL4 features (like more AIR like features)..
- Joe Wood
It seems like "too late" and illogical for Microsoft to come-up with another vendor-lock-in type innovation and expect positive results. Microsoft is not run by daredevils nor wimps. The announcement Robert talking about might be about a web based productivity application suite, which is standards compliant and offers a familiar interface and workflow for people, thus easily adoptable and steal competitors' (G, Y!, Zoho, 37S, Adobe?, etc.) user base.
- Berk D. Demir
The thing thats got me shitting my pants over all this is Games. I need Windows to play all the latest Direct X 10 and 11 games. Linux is hopeless in that regard.

Audience in here is mainly composed of technically inclined, early adopters. We feel comfortable with online apps and mainly ready to ditch (or already ditched) many offline applications in favor of our new toys. OTOH, that's a huge paradigm shift for the other majority of less technically inclined and incomparably bigger masses. Microsoft still have the power to lead masses, create...

i crammed a lot of guesses that may not have to do with the announcement so maybe robert could say warm or hot to the whole list without having to specify. :P

I vaguely recollect listening to the GIllmor Gang in June/July 2008 where Robert said he'd just visited Microsoft Research and seen "an amazing new browser". If memory serves me correctly it was said in the context of mobile devices but who knows.....this may be another contender for Monday's announcement!
- Jamie
Microsoft has already made their counter-move to a Google OS. It's called Windows Azure. It'll serve apps to the Google OS with ease and MS will make money in the process. Yeah, I know today the money be nowhere near what the Windows OS makes, but while the Google OS is gaining traction as a desktop OS, Azure will be gaining traction as an app hosting platform for that very same Google OS and others.
- Jeff Weber
More spam news will come in. Azure, Mirot ha ha ha
- Michael_techie
just another social network (where the IE users might hang out)
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Another huge innovation like renaming Bing?
- Burcu Dogan
Google is initially going after netbooks via a new OpenSource OS. If Microsoft's Next Big Thing is Azure then they are betting that a locked-in cloud-based OS will trump Google's move. It's gonna be VEHLEY INTELESTING to see this play out.
- J.D. Deutschendorf
launching online enabled MS Office, free and beta
- Павел Романовский
I really hope it's not anything Silverlight related, some one is on crack if they think the end game is everything running in a plugin in a browser.
- Scott Kahler
Dr. Schmidt HAS to resign from the Apple board... too many conflicts of interest (iPhone v Android, Chrome OS v OS X, Chrome v Safari). What could he possibly be adding that can't be obtained through someone else?
- Gerald Buckley
pricing of Azure will definitily be one of the announcements; not the BIG one. Office online perhaps...
- Jeroen De Miranda
Very interesting indeed. Chrome OS sounds like a great companion to Windows on a netbook+ device, for those times when you do need instant web/email. Looking forward to your videos!
- Will Johnson
Since the event on monday is WPC I'm guessing that Steve Balmer will present MS view on future of the Enterprise and showing off some of what Ray Ozzie has been working on. Coming full circle with Azure (computing infrastructure), Mesh (powering collaboration), SilverLight (future of runtime enviroments on all platforms) and of course all of this software+services has to be powered by Windows Enterprise Servers on the back end.
- Daniel Chow
Also the new Office is the first application to launch under the above stack. Scoble, did I get anywhere close to any of the embargoed announcements? :)
- Daniel Chow
They are going to announce the release of IE 9 - the even worse with net standards addition.
- Bobby Griffith
Windows 7 Home/Business/Ultimate Netbook Edition. Each with different capabilities and things disabled for no reason other than to confuse users and make more money.
- Scott Koon
heh - i know now what the announcement is and i am not embargoed - i should make a post :)
- Allen Stern
Go for it, Allen! Inquiring minds want to know!
- Rudy Amid
Well if you do know, you owe it to your readers to report the news,
- Mark
Mark - That's if you see tech journalists (which I don't think Robert even classifies himself as) as true hard hitting journalists (think woodward and burnstein, ed Murrow) or if you think of them in the vein of Sports writers. Sports writers, like tech writers, need to foster relationships and have their names known and have to cross closer into the friendzone to get us the day to day...

Mark: sorry, I signed an embargo. That's the way these things go and I'm not willing to burn this relationship, sorry. You'll know on Monday. Matthew is exactly right. And even with Woodward and Burnstein, they played this game. You didn't know who Deep Throat was, even though that was news too.
- Robert Scoble
Not even going to go for the Deep Throat joke... I swear, I'm not going to... :p
- Bill Heslin
I didn't mean Robert should report it. I meant Allen Stern who commented he was not under an embargo. He knows it, he has no NDA, he should report it.
- Mark
RT Allen Stern "heh - i know now what the announcement is and i am not embargoed - i should make a post :)"
- Mark
I hope its not Gazelle. If it is I respect Robert for abiding by the embargo. It seems as though no one in tech abides by embargoes any more. If it is Gazelle, might as well discuss since it is all over the tech blogs already.
- Keith Beucler
As they keep it under the blanket till now! It should be software only thingy! speculations about xbox, zune phone etc are free to leave!
- Amir
It's not Gazelle. At least I don't think so, because I have no clue what Gazelle is. I'm off to find out.
- Robert Scoble
Ahh, nope, what I was thinking of is not Gazelle. But now that I see the rumors I wonder if Microsoft has more than one major announcement on Monday?
- Robert Scoble
My Guess: They enabled Live Mesh Web Desktop to run applications, So in future all applications are going to be hosted in Live Mesh
- Amir
maybe i want use chrome all day,,just for internet surfing

Hey Robert, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being an announcement that version 8.1 of IE includes a better spell-checker, and 10 being that Windows 8 is coming out in 2010 and is free, how many out of 10 is the announcement going to be in terms of having an impact?
- Mark
btw I have had this single chrome window open for about a week, and because each tab has its own process I don't get memory leaks like with firefox.

I hope Google comes up with a great OS. I have tried any different Linux versions on my netbook but have never found the perfect one. Looks like they have connected the right partners as well so I am very excited. 9 0ut 10 for me. This could change everything
- Asgeir
it will be a sigh of release for people come to fear those massive, massive office purchase/downloads. still a pain for when you travel and have no access online though...
- Terry O'Fee
While Google's forays in the OS and office productivity arenas are great for consumer choice, are they playing w/ fire? Google's core revenue stream is search, which has a much lower switching cost than any of MS's multiple revenue streams: Client, Office, Server. It seems like the two are pitching for a protracted fight that could be costly to both. But in a battle of attrition, it seems to me that Google could lose $ faster than MS.
- lingb
"Two separate sources—one inside the company and one outside it—have confirmed to Ars tonight that Google plans to launch an operating system built in some fashion around its new web browser, Chrome. One source says that the new OS will be launched soon, perhaps as early as tomorrow. Tentatively called "Google Chrome OS," the project appears targeted at netbooks... [A] quick-booting OS built around a single application like Chrome would be a natural fit for a netbook."
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
If Google doesn't build this soon, I am going to do it myself at some point. I really, really want an instant-on laptop with low power consumption running Chrome. And I am not the only one.

Tim: to make Android a great laptop OS, you would need to do a lot of work. Just because it exists doesn't mean it works well for this use case.
- Bret Taylor

Well, if you want that, you want an instant-on os, which are already available. I would prefer a fairly low power, fairly robust environment, not to mention a sharable environment with my mobile device. I'll actually be upset if Google builds "yet another OS". Also, I don't know think it would take a whole lot of work to make (strip) android and make it work based on a browser and maybe...

- Hayes Haugen
Android has to be closer to an OS than Chrome, since it is actually on OS. Chrome does device management etc? An OS does a lot more than execute javascript in processes.

I think currently the only OS that doesn't have a security hole is one that is locked in a closet with no network connectivity and no input or output devices.

"What is an OS? When I worked at Microsoft they showed an OS as being layers. UI is top layer. Kernel and Drivers being bottom layer. Both are considered OS. Pedantic OS arrogance is worse than any of my many sins."
- Robert Scoble
Microsoft has nothing to worry about until Google provides warranties and a support line. This will be another toy for the tech oriented to play with. And then for next 10 years we will hear "THIS is the year that the Google OS is ready for the desktop"
- Patrick Allmond
A competitive OS space is GREAT for the consumer and will continue to drive more cost effective options and hopefully innovating features. While Microsoft has been the number 1 option for enterprise customers for many years, perhaps in the future there will be other serious options that also entertain SERIOUS interoperability, and first class support services to match.
- Clifford Kennedy
Chrome will revamp the Open source market. More tools built on Linux will enter space. And finally consumer is the king, since open source is free

WoWPals.net is a brand new social networking site targeted at you WoW players that just got a nice bit of coverage over on VentureBeat's GamesBeat site. Social networking is taking off just as much as World of Warcraft lately, and so there's a whole slew of companies trying to step up and become the de facto social service for gamers, from GamerDNA and Rupture to wowtwitter and even our own little enterprise. WoWPals isn't too different -- it's run by a few gamers based in Israel, and is currently in alpha, and hoping for a beta by the end of the year. You register to the site with your first character, and after a short wait for an activation email, you can jump in and find friends by guild or server, or punch in your location and search around that way. Once you're friends, there's not much more to do but chat and message each other, but what more do you need, really? Personally, I think WoW already covers the bases of a social network (though in the past I've said I would like to...
It's amazing how bad most tech companies do when it comes to PR. By the way, I laid out the best advice I ever gave on this topic back in 2003: http://scoble.weblogs.com/2003... what did I say there? Talk to the grassroots first. That is why I use Twitter and FriendFeed. That's where the grassroots are.
- Robert Scoble
I deal with this every day when I talk to NY firms. It's frustrating that they think they only way to get through to people is either cute videos or TV ads. Why don't we just ASK our customers what they want?
- Tyler Hurst
Great write-up. Surprised that you mentioned Techcrunch over Mashable. In fact, you didn't mention Mashable at all..! Any particular reasons for that?
- K N Ajit Narayan
KN Mashable isn't nearly as influential as Techcrunch is, most of my friends don't mention it. Mashable is switching to a Twitter news network, too, which makes them influential on Twitter, but not overall. Mike really has owned the tech news space and continues to do so.
- Robert Scoble
K N: also, note, I was riffing off of the New York Times article that mentioned TechCrunch and not Mashable. There's a reason for that.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, also keep in mind that most of your friends are in Silicon Valley. Mashable is very talked about on the East Coast. I think it's definitely worth considering, personally.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: exactly. Notice that Brooke Hammerling lives in New York. Even SHE doesn't talk about Mashable.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, good point - regardless, people always end up looking to Silicon Valley for their news.
- Jesse Stay
Isn't this more general than PR? The main point, as I got it, was about cynicism. Isn't any communication of opinion, whether cynical or not, contributing to the multi-faceted picture that people get of ... well, anything that we want to hear about?
- John W Lewis
Jesse: I thought Pete Cashmore even moved to SF to cover Silly Valley more.
- Robert Scoble
BTW Robert, welcome to the UK! Hope to see you tomorrow.
- John W Lewis
Mike: traffic does NOT equal influence. I can have more influence than you have by having just one reader. Think about it. If Obama read me and you had 1000 "normal" readers, who has more influence?
- Robert Scoble
Robert, is he in Silicon Valley now? Interesting. Sounds like he needs to be networking more then.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: I've watched both work. Mike digs for news more and is more tied into the VC infrastructure here, which gets him more news.
- Robert Scoble
I know when I tried to talk to him I was practically ignored, even though it was about a common client. Not that it would have had any effect on influence. I've just had a better impression of Arrington, personally.
- Jesse Stay
Robert, I agree that TC still has more influence but still, Arrington can't be happy about that trend line on Compete.com.
- Mike Doeff
Mike: Mashable is outplaying Techcrunch on Twitter and Mashable is better at writing articles that get Google page rank, like reviews of lots of products. That doesn't equal news influence, but does get traffic. I also think Arrington also made a huge mistake deleting his FriendFeed account (FriendFeed is a top three traffic driver for me already).
- Robert Scoble
Robert, why did Arrington delete his FriendFeed account? You are right about Mashable. On Twitter, one gets the impression that Mashable is more popular than Techcrunch. But that may not hold true elsewhere.
- K N Ajit Narayan
K N: He got mad at the "mob" that formed here after his fight with Leo Laporte and deleted his account. Repeat after me, popularity does NOT equal influence.
- Robert Scoble
Arrington like like a nice guy. Yes, popularity does NOT equal influence. LoL
- K N Ajit Narayan
The chance that an individual will be sufficiently interested in something to pass it on and, thereby, create a mob effect depends on many factors (and, surely, these have been well studied?). Presumably, something must be significant, remarkable (literally), relevant, and so on. The source of the thing has an effect, I guess, in terms of credibility, reach, etc.. And for the original...

Yeah, I always used to tell people they could get more great PR by going to parties at conferences (or better yet, throwing them) than they could get with a big expensive PR firm. When I was a big fancy magazine editor I would habitually filter out any incoming messages from big PR firms, since they were usually content-free at best, and BS-laden at worst. People who I met at parties had way better stories, rumors, and other intell for me than PR flacks!
- Fred Davis
I used to work for a technology consulting firm. Many new client relationships originated from conversations with people in neighbouring seats on flights. We often suggested dropping the advertising and giving everyone a free trip once a month!

John & Fred - yes and more yes. Talking to people is remarkably effective. Who knew?

The NY Times story was terribly unflattering. I can't blame Ms. Miller - some of the voices quoted were the antithesis of what I've aspired to be. If that's what she's experienced, we as a profession need to take a serious step back and re-evaluate our purpose. I was so peeved I spent my 4th trying to craft a reasonable response. - AllisonWagda
Hacks continue to paint flacks as they are. But that these flacks represent what is going on in the industry and the sea change afoot couldn't be farther from the truth.
- andy
Robert - really didn't like how you generalized PR people in your article. Further, the reality is there are very few people in Silicon Valley at all who actually know anything about taking products to the real mainstream. Very, very few.
- Jeremy Toeman
Let's not overgeneralize about Valley PR people then. There are plenty that know lots about taking products to the mainstream (Margit at Outcast being one of them).

Outcast was the sole voice of reason quoted in that story.

That article was PR for Brew and looks like it worked. It wasn't about PR.

You are right but it was Brew's agenda. No different than other pieces that cover a topic but sell a product. And who's to say that wasn't part of the strategy? (To be that bad.) - polou/indigo_bow
There's an issue that's not covered here, in Arrington's piece or the original NYTimes story, namely that just as PR firms have to change the way they work, tech companies have to adjust their expectations as well. A lot of companies are stuck in the mindset of the "Big Bang" launch, where you put out your news and suddenly you get tons of attention all at once. That's just not how the...

My worst nightmare is losing one of my own sons in front of my eyes. Yesterday we saw a father hold his daughter as she died in the most horrific way I could imagine. Those images kept me from sleeping well last night. Neda is her name. Her dad was holding her as she died. He named her Neda, which means "beautiful voice." Yesterday his beautiful voice was silenced. Today he is the father I'm thinking of.

"We make a few simple points about the events transpiring over the past week in Iran. The Iranian regime is an evil tyranny. It supports terrorists and terrorism. The United States has a debt of honor to settle with it for the kidnapping and mistreatment of American hostages thirty years ago. That disgrace is not simply a matter of history. It is a disgrace in which Iran's execrable president personally participated. We remember." -- http://www.powerlineblog.com/archive...

She has become the face of an entire generation in Iran. I can't even imagine being this father. That's not how I'd like to remember my sons, if that ever happened to me.

Craig: I've been thinking about that too. Iran has sacrificed any moral authority it had to tell USA off. Now we see how brutal its government is.

It's a terrible tragedy for any father to witness the death of his own children. May their sacrifices make it all the more less likely that more people have to suffer in the same ways. This shows that no longer can governments hide tyranny with repression of the people. The people will be heard, and their voices will change the world. Yes Robert, this changed the world forever in ways that a war with thousands of deaths could never. This is much more personal, to anyone who sees it.

no doubt about it. Now we all can feel the importance of UGC for the future of our world. If we don't have these social movements around you may not even know about the things happening in Iran. (remember CNNFail!?)

Michael: for me as well, it was her eyes looking (or not) that has stayed with me vs. the bloodied image at the end.

Aaman: all those who go on the streets are brave. My wife's relatives in Iran all say they haven't left their homes since Saturday.

Aaman:There's no battle, there is one sided murder

What stayed with me the most is the father's reaction. That was truly horrifying.

Amiroo: There is one sided murder, but that doesn't mean there is no battle. Those people in the streets are battling plenty.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
My father used to say, to be willing to achieve anything, you have to be willing to pay any price.
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
Rob: yes but we hope they don't. The only possible way to win this is by silent resistance (you know like Gandhi). There's isn't any winner when violence steps in.
- Amiroo ™
Amiroo: Neda wasn't violent. She was silent and her "crime" was just being in the streets. That's one reason her image has even more power. If she had been violent her image wouldn't have had as much power.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I need to post your first comment. It is heartbreaking, thoughtful and filled with compassion!
- Myrna
Yeah that's the way to go though such a sad way unfortunately
- Amiroo ™
Robert is correct, and that is the sort of non-violent protest that starts and completes great movements. I have not seen many images of violent protesters. I have seen an image of protesters caring for a wounder policeman though. This IS the behavior that the likes of Ghandi taught. To engage in true non-violence protest, you must be willing to pay any price.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Amiroo: It is unbelievably sad, but the power that she and her father bring to this struggle, may just be the power that's necessary to avoid any further large scale conflict, either between the people of Iran and their government, or between the US (or Israel) and Iran. We can hope.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Rob:Hopefully, but the anger that this may generate between people may lead to violent acts and slogans that actually I think the government needs to block them. I really hope people continue that way they did till now
- Amiroo ™
Amiroo: I cannot agree with your statement "I think the government needs to block them" . That is precisely the problem, is the governments around the world trying to dictate what their people can say, do, and watch, and listen to. That is precisely the problem in Iran today. I pray that that image doesn't lead to more violence, but I also understand that at a certain point, there is a necessity to fight fire with fire. Let's pray that the government of Iran can see the light before the violence escalates.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Rob:If it goes that way it won't be any fight fire with fire it will be punch with fire
- Amiroo ™
Amiroo: Don't underestimate the power of the people, and don't overestimate the loyalty of the military to the government. Often it is the combination of these two factors that make violence all the more unnecessary.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Robert Your powerful comment of Neda's face not being what her father wants to remember recalled for me a recent case right here in the USA of a family that has made desperate efforts to get their daughter's fatal car accident photos off the Internet which were leaked by the police. But yes, free speech is not always fun and games. I have to defend speech that often is objectionable if I am to defend our first amendment.
- Robert Scoble
this moment is the perfect time to remind everyone that the most successful resistance is the kind that allows you to live for another day; to _continue_ the fight. yes, there are times when tragic things happen, but this is _not_ the goal. martyrdom is not success. i know this video will reverberate around the world. i only hope the proper message will accompany it, too.
- MikeAmundsen
Rob:Well the problem is most (if not all) of this violence hasn't made by typical military forces, there are lots of so called Basij forces which are in the same side with the government also I think even if it succeed by fighting violently there would be such a big price to pay
- Amiroo ™
Robert, I am as well. Ironically, I am in the midst of writing a piece on this to expose a particular rhetoric that cuts it off. However, as with all things, there is always a line that protects us from extremes (which are very horrific things) while protecting that freedom of speech we cherish. Any freedoms we have, if not exercised with love, become in themselves a prison to ourselves and to those who are hurt by their corrupt exercise.
- Melanie Reed
Amiroo: Then let's ensure that all our own thoughts are on the side of success without violence. The more people that think about a given outcome (and talk about it, etc) the more likely that is to become the truth.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Would like to second the early comment about Iran's leaderships lost ability to claim moral authority of any kind. Its clear their oppressive government is more than willing to use brutal, thoughtless, violence to keep control. Imagine what they would do to the world with a nuke. They may not have ordered her killing but they built their power on the backs of brutal militias willing to do it and have not called them back.
- James Watters
Good G*d, I didn't know that was her father with her. That is just heartbreaking. :..(
- Laserone
:( Happy father's day to you, and god bless your sons:(
- Mahyaa مهیا
I too would like to add to the heart felt comments left here. Nothing quite brings it home more than seeing that innocent young woman lose her life like that. I only viewed it the once as I felt it was wrong to want to view a second time and felt almost voyeuristic in the worst way imaginable. It was brutal, sad and upsetting. Let us think of her family at this time aside from all the politics.
- Kevin J Hatton
Robert I have been thinking of: Neda, people who want to "be heard", raising awareness to influence change, and the green overlay on our icon... Why don't we do a "Web Neda's day" vs a "minute of silence" by putting all an overlay of Green on our websites for 24 h (a little bit like Google put a different logo once in a while on its home page) . Her name was Neda, you explained it means "beautiful Voice". Robert You are the incredible hulk, I am sure you could be the one turning the web in green for 1 day.
- Harscoat
Getting ready for building43's launch on Thursday. We're doing a joint event with TechCrunch (it's their fourth birthday too). There will be a virtual component, too, and lots of Facebook stuff.
Thanks, it's just a start. Brainstorming, getting a team together, figuring out what Building43 will be, and getting the engine to start turning over has proven pretty difficult. Hopefully we can meet the expectations.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: I will be covering the launch on the blog too.
- Jim Connolly
Christian: unfortunately it's an invite-only affair because the place we're hosting it at can only hold 200 people. But we'll be doing live video and there'll be some fun friendfeed integration (thank you to Paul Buchheit and the friendfeed team for help, even over the weekend!) It all happens Thursday afternoon, more details to come soon.
- Robert Scoble
Looking forward to it, Good Luck with the launch Robert!
- Gary Gannon
Looking forward to seeing it all, hope it all goes smoothly :)
- Sam Webb
Can't wait Robert - wish I could be there.
- Jesse Stay
Sam: it's a launch. They never seem to go smoothly. Sort of like taking off from an aircraft carrier.
- Robert Scoble
This is from a 15-year-old who is very expert with world of warcraft, has a MySpace page, a Twitter account, a friendfeed account, is very active on Mac Rumors, etc.
- Robert Scoble
He is on more of the Internet than probably 9 out of 10 humans alive and he defines himself to a Google team by not owning a web site. Interesting.
- Robert Scoble
Making websites is time consuming and, in my opinion, not necessary if you simply need a place to publish to the web, talk with friends and get yourself out there.
- Brandon Titus
Renting vs owning in real estate terms?
- Micah Wittman
Alfredo: the unspoken message is that his generation doesn't need a web site. They'll still be a major part of the Internet.
- Robert Scoble
Its the same with my younger relatives... They have a far more natural approach to the new media "So do you kids use the Internet regulary?" - "No..... Not that much?" - "So what do you do when you go online" - "facebook, youtube, myspace, for school, for work..." - "how often do you check facebook?" - "hmmm few times A day"
- Andreas Klinger
It took me back to how I found my doctor. She's #1 on Yelp but yet had never been there. The world is changing and it no longer is only about having a website.
- Robert Scoble
Rob: there's some of that in what he was trying to say, yes. His generation wants to be "more with it" than the previous. But I think there's something deeper going on. The 2010 Web isn't about owning a web site anymore.
- Robert Scoble
He'll change his tune when someone with his name does something controversial and it's #1 on Google.
- Mark
Sounds like the teenager asked by Don Tapscott ("Wikinomics") about why she was not using email to communicate with friends. Reply: "Hmm ... email. That would be the sort of thing you'd use to send a thank you letter ... to your friend's ... parents!"
- John W Lewis
Mark: have you checked how fast friendfeed items are showing up on Google lately? I have. You don't need a blog or a web site to be on Google anymore.
- Robert Scoble
I think that domains will become mostly for business and the like while personal profiles will be controlled by social networks, profile sites (Google profiles) etc.
- Brandon Titus
@Robert maybe - or maybe it's about owning an identity you control which may indeed look like a website but function as an identity broker owned by the user
- Chris Saad
Some one still has to create the websites though. :-)
- Jesse Stay
Can I get out of making a website for my teenage son with these arguments?
- Anita Hunt
Chris: translation: own a Facebook profile. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
But does the _you_ own the Facebook profile?
- Micah Wittman
Your son has probably realized that most personal websites are never seen.
- Trine Curtis
I too agree that the new generations do not need a web site. What they need instead is a presence on this Interweb. This can be achieve in many other more effective means than a personal web site; in the traditional sense.
- Vinko
I have more ego than he. I'll be damned if I'm going to let Facebook own me and my profile. meh.
- Karoli
If you want to seed control of the social web to facebook then sure. Or maybe the next generation identity hub will be as distributed and open as a web-server
- Chris Saad
Micah makes a good point about renting vs owning. Also, some people just want communication, others will want permanence (that they own and control). I still suspect that as new generations age they will still want to create more of a legacy on their own domains.
- LogEx
Or does Facebook own it (in the possession is 9/10 of the law sense)
- Micah Wittman
It's the difference between having a web presences and a website... Just because I don't own my home doesn't mean I'm not a citizen.
- Johnny Worthington
Chris: his real identity is on MySpace. That's where his friends hang out and he's asked me not to link to his MySpace profile. Why not? Cause then all "my friends" will show up there. :-)
- Robert Scoble
It's all about getting the most out of the web. If your own website doesn't do it but a Facebook profile does, then by all means don't do your own website. Marketing still isn't dead though - act on results.
- Jesse Stay
It was never about having a website. It never will be. It will always will be using the right tools to reach the right people. People that you care about and people that care about you.
- Akshay Dodeja
The new generation's presence on the web will be fluid. They will not have one place where they blog, post photos or share their thoughts. It will transform as the technology transform.
- Vinko
Akshay: exactly. That was his message to me. Plus there was a tinge of "that blogging thing is so dead." Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
MySpace, Facebook, these are all nice walled gardens like AOL before them - but eventually the rest of the web will become just as rich and inviting as the walled gardens - and not because Facebook Connect.
- Chris Saad
Facebook Connect is a great proof of concept, but the real solution will be based on open standards just like the web is based on TCP/IP and HTTP
- Chris Saad
Chris: Facebook will be forced to open up. Why? Because Google will show them the money is in search and to do search, even in the real time web, you need to open up.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, sounds like there's an opportunity to show him why it could be useful, if not now, perhaps in the future for him.
- Jesse Stay
We'll be ripe for a backlash in a few years, especially if services don't keep moving in the direction of data portability.
- LogEx
Robert: I have tried to many times to start a blog. Failed each and every time. Now I am trying different things and its working in some ways :)
- Akshay Dodeja
Actually it's friendfeed that's going to show them that, but Google will be recognized by most of the world and Google definitely is moving to make sure that they are a player in the real time web.
- Robert Scoble
No Facebook will open up because Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and others are working actively to dilute their lock on the social graph. It's in google's interest to continue to erode Facebooks monopoly so they can continue to index the social web
- Chris Saad
Chris: sorry, that's a side show. The real action is going to happen in search. Or, something associated with filtered display.
- Robert Scoble
The community has an opportunity to work with the 'loosers' and the startups to ensure that we don't crown a new king, but rather to push the web as the ultimate platform
- Chris Saad
Facebook only competes with Google on the private web. Until they offer indexed, public search they will never be able to compete side-by-side with Google. They only offer a subset of what Google provides right now.
- Jesse Stay
Awesome to see this conversation in "real time"
- David Damore
Chris: the REAL money is NOT on the social graph. I can see this so clearly. Very few can, though.
- Robert Scoble
@robert the real money is (imho) not in search but in knowing about the user - search is just yet the best way to know about him/her - facebook could deliever social enhanced adwords to the internet
- Andreas Klinger
I'm not arguing about that - but if Facebook was left unchecked then they could own the new social search and monetizing the user not the page. That's why Google will work hard to erode Facebook's monopoly to ensure they stay in the game
- Chris Saad
Andreas: that's what search looks like in the future.
- Robert Scoble
Chris: true, but Google is NOT going to leave Facebook unchecked. Facebook needs to move much faster than it is, actually.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert the real value is in the stream and being able to index it - which Google can't do with the Facebook feed
- Chris Saad
Users are not monetizeable, by the way. Intent and other "about to consume" gestures are. I want an icecream is monetizeable. Eating an ice cream is not.
- Robert Scoble
Eating chocolate icecream every wed IS
- Chris Saad
It means you like dairy, chocolate and sweets on wed
- Chris Saad
@Robert "i know you could now want an ice cream" is worth even more imho
- Andreas Klinger
Chris: that's an "about to consume" gesture. Agreed. :-)
- Robert Scoble
The real value is in being able to index the *entire* web, and knowing each user that is searching that entire web. Facebook isn't anywhere near being able to do that.
- Jesse Stay
Andreas: or, if you are Gary Vaynerchuk you can make me want a merlot-flavored ice cream. That's worth the most. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Jesse: Facebook has an index that Google can't get to and it pisses off Google.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert Look forward to debating this with u in person tmr at 6pm
- Chris Saad
Isn't the idea of social profiles a search to figure out what a user wants next, now? Like how people visit car websites before buying an automobile?
- David Damore
Robert, Google has many indexes Facebook can't get to as well - Gmail, Orkut, Docs, Apps, many more...
- Jesse Stay
But wait, surely he does have a web site, a blog, etc.? They are his Facebook page!
- John W Lewis
@Jesse which is why Google, Yahoo, Microsoft etc are still in the game - the notion that 'Facebook has won' is just valley hype
- Chris Saad
With the kind of information that Google is tracking isn't Google in the best place to monetize our conversations?
- Vinko
There are 2 things we're talking about here - the "private web" and the "public web". Facebook has one. Google has both.
- Jesse Stay
No we're talking about the document web vs. the Social web :)
- Chris Saad
Chris, Google has both of those as well.
- Jesse Stay
@Jesse agreed - Google is still going very strong - and should/will buy FF and Twitter to strengthen their position
- Chris Saad
I dont like facebook, to me its a lot of social drama...
- sergio luna
Jesse: Google's Infos about the Socialgraphs are too fuzzy. Gmail is like my telephone calllist - not my telephone adressbook
- Andreas Klinger
Chris, or, just strengthen one of their existing products to compete. Google Chat stands out to me.
- Jesse Stay
Andreas you should see my Google Voice address book. It wouldn't take much to connect that all together.
- Jesse Stay
@Andreas Google's graphs are super active. Noise for google = pointers to the signal - that's what they do best
- Chris Saad
Short question: am i the only one thinking that Social Widgets (Facebook Apps at external Sites) combined with an Advert System is an most interesting thing to come ?
- Andreas Klinger
@Jesse their best bet is Gmail and Address book integrated with FriendFeed
- Chris Saad
I don't like Facebook either. Now people I thought I'd left behind 20 years ago are finding me again. Yay. But more importantly, someone said ice cream.
- Trine Curtis
Jesse: Yet, in my network, Skype Chat is much more widely used than Google Chat.
- John W Lewis
Chris, agreed - there's a reason Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed all let you import your Gmail contacts. They want Google's private web.
- Jesse Stay
@Andreas No you're not - If Facebook owns the social graph/stream then they will try to own the widgets and ad units - that's why the rest of the web needs to provide a viable alternative so that there is no new monopoly.
- Chris Saad
I think that Google will strengthen it's social system by bringing in contact finding through the social graph from services like FriendFeed, Twitter, and maybe Facebook and clearing out the noise. Their contact manager or whatever will be strengthened once they have a real Google Chat, Google Voice, and Gmail working together.
- Brandon Titus
I love coming over to FriendFeed to always see an amazingly active thread going on in the Scobleverse!!
- Jason Pollock
in my network microsoft msn is the leader...neither skype or google chat are as strong
- sergio luna
John, I'm talking about strength of the social graph in each one. Skype doesn't hold a finger to Google's contacts.
- Jesse Stay
Sergio, agreed - Microsoft also has a very big potential to compete. I'd say they're more a threat to Google than Facebook right now in this area.
- Jesse Stay
All of these platforms have their advantages - the point is they are all social services and should inter operate for the benefit of the user - and benefit the bottom line of the companies that make it happen
- Chris Saad
(Meta-point: this conversation IS the live web in action, but how does it scale? What happens to the quality of conversation if the rate of commenting on this topic exceeds my reading speed?)
- John W Lewis
Then again, in the competition for people, once you're indexing every person with web access, you also have access to their lives, websites, and personal data. That's much more powerful than an anonymous index of every website on the planet. Facebook could have a chance.
- Jesse Stay
This conversation is a byproduct of the the live web - but it's not much more than an indexable chatroom. The status updates and feeds that generate this conversation are the real interesting part
- Chris Saad
@Jesse that's Facebook's play - and that's why Google and others are working to dilute the monopoly (a monopoly of mindshare at least) - that's why the community at large has an opportunity to support an open approach
- Chris Saad
During times of change, we have an opportunity to ensure the outcome is open - open means innovation can surge ahead at the nodes instead of being controlled by a central authority
- Chris Saad
Chris, at the same time indexing each individual rather than website could be more advantageous in the end. Google's not doing that quite as well as Facebook. That's not to say they won't, and they're definitely making progress at the moment. Google doesn't necessarily publish what they're tracking about you. Facebook does, via the live stream when you log in - which is more open per se?
- Jesse Stay
For an interesting look at the cross-section of marketing / customer behaviour (mostly off-line, but the web is part of the story) and obsession, check out this documentary on contesters ("professional" contest participants) - just saw it on a plane ride http://www.cbc.ca/doczone... [Interestingly, when I searched for this documentary, I found the guy who pitched the...
- Micah Wittman
Jesse by this argument is google "publically tracking for you that you publish your webpage"
- Andreas Klinger
Jesse, its just different type of technology you use - Stream.put or Ftp.put
- Andreas Klinger
History will repeat! I started with email on CompuServe and did not communicate with others on other services, then discovered "internet mail". As with hardware, software, email and now social media, the architecture of vertical silos will gradually transform into horizontal layers ... from below! Only then does the "network effect" really start!
- John W Lewis
Andreas, do you know everything Google has tracked about you? What about all the Analytics tracking on each website you visit combined with data they've learned about you elsewhere? With Google, there's no way to opt-out without just killing your internet connection. At least with Facebook, it's opt-in. Google, IMO, has the potential to be much more evil than Facebook. That is, unless Facebook enters the open web arena.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, this tracking is not public on facebook neither
- Andreas Klinger
Jesse, true Google is big enough to pass the last frontier point of relationship to reality
- Andreas Klinger
Andreas, I know almost everything Facebook is tracking on me because they at least publish most of it via my stream. True, I don't know everything, but I know a lot. Not only that but they give me controls on what they can do with what they're tracking. I can't do that with Google.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, the stream info is your active part not your passive part
- Andreas Klinger
Jesse anyway i think we are talking about the same :)
- Andreas Klinger
Ok gotta go for a slow-real-life Meeting - cya!
- Andreas Klinger
I really think its not about who will conquer what i.e. google, facebook, etc... I really believe all this players are the basics, like the old economic scheme, I think we are going to evolve and use all this sites & technology in a very diverse and sophisticated form, kind of like what the brand Starbucks is to the old industry of coffee. google, facebook etc. are the industrial plants of our new digital era.
- sergio luna
Andreas, agreed, but I can still opt in to Facebook. I can't opt-in or opt-out of Google completely. I'm just saying it's not all about "open" like Google would like you to think. That's just their Marketing play, and we're all falling for it.
- Jesse Stay
Are we forgetting something? Facebook, Google, ... ARE websites. It is just about the level at which we engage. I do not need to build my own car to drive on the road; I can buy one, it is cheaper. But if I buy a Lamborghini or Porsche, I can still interact (inc. collide!) with you in your Mercedes! (For the public record, I drive an Audi.) Robert recently posted about geek disconnect, these guys are making the web consummable.
- John W Lewis
So we've finally found the one person in the world who doesn't want to friend you on FB!
- Rebecca Rachmany
From the mouths of babes... or 15year olds. At least we can count on things constantly changing just a little faster than many can adapt to.
- Mark Essel
Makes me feel better for not updating my website anymore - I'm not behind, I'm ahead :D
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
"I don't have a web site" indeed. My kids were not interested in learning how to create websites. "We have blogs on our cell phones." Well, then...
- Rick Cogley
your son's approach doesn't sound as absurd as it might seem at first. look at skittles, who dropped their website and transfered everything to twitter! and i was just thinking the other day about an ngo-website i'm involved in and why not moving it completely over to a facebook page.
- Johannan Edelman
In the next hour or so I will pass 37,000 subscribers. friendfeed's growth is accelerating. It is about time to look for a new shiny object. The celebrities will be here soon.
I think 1,000 have followed me this week alone. It's amazing to watch the early adopters catch on to what Louis Gray showed me more than a year ago.
- Robert Scoble
lol....well that proves Robert is the one and only cutting-edge celebrity we all gotta follow! 37k subs on ff is gr8. and i gotta work like a dog to reach even 1k.
- Freddie Benjamin
How the hell are you digesting all this data, are you a robot in disguise ?
- Ryan Erickson
I wish I had time to figure out friend feed! I'm computer savvy and this one has me stumped! Send me a basic video please! I've got some of the basics down, but the community aspect and how to communicate has me stumped...other than when you send me here from twitter.
- Hummie
Ryan: I have high resolution screens and I type fast. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Isn't that just like a man? Gets your heart all a flutter and then he moves on.
- Sharon McPherson
No one mention friendfeed to the 'normals'.
- Ryan Whitwam
Have you studied how much conversation celebrities actually have? They might find FF needing more personal maintenance than they want to.
- Yann Ropars
Don't ask me about shiny new stuff. My web development is in a 50-year-old language and its most exciting features relate to a 10-year-old data format.
- Bruce Lewis
Ryan Whitwam: too late. Google is indexing friendfeed posts higher than Tweets.
- Robert Scoble
for the love of all that is geek, no one RT this to K-utcher or O-prah.
- Alachia
Hopefully, friendfeed will have implemented real-time filters before Oprah comes here, also to filter massive amounts of comments coming in by "likes" and algorithms on the "likes" so selections among 1000s of chatters are filtered in real-time to the front for each user while the rest of the conversations are hidden in a personalized way based on their own likes and friends
- Charbax
Alachia: Kutcher came to a TechCrunch party last year. He's the real deal. Oprah? Um, no.
- Robert Scoble
Why would a real geek play the numbers game then?
- Alachia
Someone should create a Techmeme for celebrities... a tool that search and aggregate social media sphere txt and rich media into one stream...
- Yann Ropars
Thanks..I'm watching the link now...I see Friend Feed has changed since I was here last.
- Hummie
Anyway, I know you weren't totally serious posting this. But I do think you could more fully explore the toys you're already playing with. Spend some time on that Site Integration page. You know which one I mean.
- Bruce Lewis
Look for the next shiny object. We'll be here when you get back. :)
- Louis Gray
Louis: if you haven't found a new shiny object yet, it's safe to stay here for a couple more months. :-)
- Robert Scoble
:) who will be the King ff FF, Ashton? or do we graduate to more distinguished folks? sanjaya perhaps
- Samer Forzley
Hummie: The search bar is at the top of the page. Search for a term you're interested in, and on the resulting page you'll notice a red bar at the top with a link "click here to save". Click the link and you can customize and save that search.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Oh geez...HOW did I miss that search box...if it were a bug, it would have bit me! Thanks...going to test the save a search now. If I can figure this place out, I'll be sure to do a video on how to use it on my blog...cause that's what I do...and people expect me to do!
- Hummie
Okay, someone tell me how I make a post on Friendfeed without having one import from another application (twitter, Flickr, etc).
- Hummie
=) It takes a bit of time to get everything (especially now with so many options). There's a group specifically for cool searches you can save, give me a moment and I'll get you a link. Also, there's a FF for Beginners group that might be helpful. Again, just a moment and I'll have you a link. As for how to post: see the text box underneath the search box? Post there.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think you could co-exist if you really wanted to but then again I totally understand why you're already thinking about leaving FF.
- John Blanton
from twhirl
I think you could co-exist if you really wanted to but then again I totally understand why you're already thinking about leaving FF. If you left where would you go?
- John Blanton
from twhirl
Thanks for your help, Tina. I think the new interface since I was here last is a big improvement. It's easier to figure out than it was before.
- Hummie
No problem, Hummie =) The new interface is intriguing: people who were really active on FF before started out disliking it (but most have grown accustomed to it). People who didn't connect with FF before really seem to like it. Not sure what that says about the differences in the two user types...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I can recommend to open the users reg. to other sites as well ,for example it can be great to let other sites to get for their users an automatic registration here in FF
- Johni Fisher
Johni, FF has pretty much implemented exactly that. People can log in with their Twitter, Facebook, or Google IDs now.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Yes thats right but lets say that we have an online newspaper that would like to create users here to his users and to have activity ....in my opinion with this pos we can get here much more than just the tech users
- Johni Fisher
I am enjoying friendfeed rightnow since it is safe from undue publicity.
- ashish
Ashish: that will only last a few more weeks, given the growth rate here.
- Robert Scoble
will this result in more maintanence time = offline time?
- ashish
:-)) u r wrong Robert as long that you control the info that u can get u will keep the fun
- Johni Fisher
I suspect the "early adopters" - "celebrities" timeline is an oversimplification. It's quite possible that a year from now, Twitter will have moved from its "Oprah" stage to a post-Oprah stage, which is more accurately reflected by the timeline "early adopters" - "celebrities" - "everybody else." Think of cell phones as an example. There was a period when celebrities and yuppies...
- John E. Bredehoft
they are already here, I noticed P Diddy and a Khardasian in my friendfeed followers the other day.
- Christi
John: sorry, Twitter won't get "everyone else." They already are on facebook.
- Robert Scoble
its past my bedtime.. I will have to read about it tomorrow.. g'nite :o)
- David Gross
I've passed two kidney stones, but 37,000 friendfreed subscribers? That sounds really painful.
- Ranger Craig
Plurk. The celebrities will never use Plurk. Of course, there are good reasons for that.
- Ken Wallich
I'll keep an eye on the list of suggested users. As long as you are on top, I think this is still a safe Geekdome...(how many users does FF claim?)
- Antonella Stellacci
Kim: I passed 37,000 a while ago. The growth here is headed up and I got there a LOT faster than I did on Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
But aren't most of your FF subscribers also Twitter followers? Add that you're the first face new FF see when they join :)
- Antonella Stellacci
Seriously, though not sure celebrities will want to be on Friendfeed, unless there interested in good conversation, its not a megaphone like Twitter is, which is all the a lot of celebrities want.
- Kim Landwehr
Antonella: most of my Twitter followers were readers of my blog, too. So? That's how I separate out the real people from the bots. The bots stick with what I did yesterday. The real people follow me to the new shiny object when I find one.
- Robert Scoble
Kim: celebrities go where the people are. Just wait.
- Robert Scoble
I fear that this friend feed, twitter followers race is becoming too much for the slightly more tech savvy but still average user to keep up with. Someone looking for a place to connect on multiple topics but doesn't have a blog, start -up or celebrity status (of any kind) to warrant any following other than sheer wit to compete with. I work in hi-tech and love love LOVE all things web...
- Cyndi Brigham
Robert, they go where the most people go. It'll be a LONG time before they show up here.
- Kyle Sellers
Kyle: wrong. The celebrities are already starting to show up here.
- Robert Scoble
Agreed, but I guess that the migration from readers of a blog to Twitter users was slower than Twitter-> Friendfeed which might explain the different timeframe. The next shiny is more than welcome...
- Antonella Stellacci
Thanks Robert, based on this, I think that for what I'm looking for, Friend Feed may be more the route than Twitter...The link you sent was amazing. I don't know that I'd find that on Twitter. Appreciate the response!
- Cyndi Brigham
my friend feed has exploded this week, I think it's a much better listening device
- Jessica Wilzig Gottlieb
Jimmy Fallon was rumored to be on here, but I can't find him.
- Robert Scoble
Do you think in a year or so, FriendFeed could take over the space from Twitter, and that Twitter will be sort of the "Myspace" or do you think they will both thrive together, sort of need each other?
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen: I don't see friendfeed taking over from Twitter in next year. I see friendfeed going in a different direction. The money is in search, so friendfeed needs to be a massively better search engine. We're seeing the groundwork for that now, but it'll take a year to make it obvious to everyone.
- Robert Scoble
so abandon ship on Twitter everyone.
- Brad Jackson
Antonella: heh, I didn't think of just typing in the URL. Yeah, that looks like him. Mostly a clone of his Tweets though.
- Robert Scoble
FriendFeed WAY more useful no? It's not even close....
- j sven
That makes me too late... I didn't like how Friend Feed was before. Now I don't like how Twitter is and I'm falling in luv/lust with FriendFeed. .. but if the celebs invade, and the "like-ables" like you leave... oh whoa... where shall I go?
- Arleen Anderson
Arleen: don't worry, we'll have plenty of time to figure that out. We've already been sending Louis Gray on scouting trips to make sure we have somewhere to go. :-)
- Robert Scoble
08:00 BST you made it! 37,045 subscribers. Congrats :)
- Anita Hunt
More shiny objects Robert? at least stay until this one gets tarnished ;-)
- Rachel Clarke
Rachel: actually, wait until we get skinning here. Then it'll seem brand new for quite a while. I'm not leaving, just having some fun!
- Robert Scoble
Hummie I'm with you on this. When I first came here I very quickly walked away again, I just couldn't figure it out. I had to get help from my son. There's a lesson there for all of us by the way. And it's possible this "Oh Christ now what do I do?" initial impression is keeping the RiffRaff out. Unlike that other service over there ----> which is real easy to understand.
- Gilbert Harding
we're already here, you just haven't noticed us yet!
- randulo
Is there a list of the most subscribed to people on friendfeed? I'm guessing RObert has to be the most subscribed t0, non-friendfeed employee?
- Jim Connolly
Gah, I DO NOT want that to happen! I finally got rid of twitter (except for using it with friendfeed) and don't want to have to find something else. Maybe I should start my own social network... *ponders that thought for a second* Nah, too much work.
- MλTT
Robert - I knew you would be top of the pile! I'm in 350th place apparently - w00t!!
- Jim Connolly
Matt: (that really did make me laugh out loud!!)
- Jim Connolly
I'm not sure the celebs with come to friendfeed. At least not in the same way they have with twitter. Twitter is a broadcast medium to most celebs. They want to tell the world what they are doing and build their brand. They have no interest in what their followers are doing. FF appears to be more of a community where discussion and sharing can take place. (i know you know this but just wanted to add my 2cents)
- Jamie Vidamour
I think FriendFeed is 'just' complex enough to scare the crap out of the celebs. Look at the trouble Oprah had with something as easy to use as Twitter! That said, pretty soon most celebs will have social media companies doing this for them.
- Jim Connolly
<The celebrities will be here soon> Yup .
- JimmyJet
"That said, pretty soon most celebs will have social media companies doing this for them" Jim that sounds like a promising business plan.
- Gilbert Harding
My fear exactly. In fact I wonder if following the latest social network trend will itself become the mainstream media's new news trend. I do believe tech and celebs can live in harmony on the same broadcast platform, but it depends greatly on the management of that platform. Twitter management handled this badly. Recommendations should be based on content, not the number of followers...
- Keith Barrett
Do you have ghosts like Guy Kawasaki ? How you manage to control all of the streams! 90K+ on twitter, 30K+ from FF.. Amazing.. Really.. I jelaous.
- Jacque
Jacque: I do all my own social media work. No ghosts. I just do what I can!
- Robert Scoble
I wonder what the next new shiny object will be, any guesses or predictions?
- Sally Church
Actually, Pretty Monkey Studio just gave me a great idea: Create my own social network made out of strings and tin cans that spans across the whole world so that everyone can be connected by voice, rather than text... Wait! That may have a few problems *thinks about the repercussions of creating a social network where people put a tin can to their ear while millions of voices are piped (strung?) in to it*
- MλTT
matt: its easy.. you will have a tin can for each person you are connected to. the others get a lid. and for group chats you just need more people that are sitting next to you in the treehouse :)
- Pretty Monkey Studio
Pretty Monkey: Dibs on that idea! I'm developing a prototype and getting a patent tomorrow :P
- MλTT
just come over to our treehouse and we'll hook you up :D we even have pink tin cans !!
- Pretty Monkey Studio
Nooooo!!! It's MY idea, Pretty Monkey! If this kicks off, you aren't getting any of the profits :P
- MλTT
sry we already have the patent ;) but you could try triangle shaped yellow tin cans for your prototype. Banana shapes are taken too
- Pretty Monkey Studio
Not fair :'( Robert, can you make Pretty Monkey Studio hand over the patent?
- MλTT
Matt: sure, but I charge $400 an hour for playing a lawyer and this will take at least 40 hours of my work and you're still not guaranteed that Pretty Monkey Studio will hand it over. Want to proceed? ;-)
- Robert Scoble
I wonder what that point is. When did it start on Twitter?
- Lester Greenberg
Robert: Hmmm, put a decimal point after the 4 and I'm in.
- MλTT
I took several months off from friendfeed to concentrate on my facebook presence. Now that I'm back I can't believe all the changes and growth here. 2008 was the year of facebook, 2009 is the year of twitter, could 2010 be the year of friendfeed?
- Jonathan.Rivera
pfff you guys are only after money. just come over to the treehouse, you'll get a tin can fro free, we can play some blackjack and spin the bottle and have a good time without patents, twithits or the likes and you can explain friendfeed to us :D
- Pretty Monkey Studio
Well, when you're saving to buy your first iPhone, money has a big impact on your actions.
- MλTT
So are companies going to take a stand and disallow celebrities to join services and ruin them or should they change the terms to the we won't reject people based on sex, race, or fame.
- Eric Fisher
Eric: friendfeed doesn't need to do that. They just need to make sure that we remain in control of our viewport and that they minimize the kinds of games humans like to play (collecting followers and gaming systems to see if we can move up a list, etc).
- Robert Scoble
Robert, do you think the next "shiny object" will be a mobile one? Not a device, but a mobile service. Something that works great on all platforms, iPhone, Android, Win, Nokia, etc.
- Mike Lewis
I knew it was always just about the latest shiny object! Now I have proof...
- Andrew Deal
Mike... I hope robert says yes.... that is what I always am pushing @cellecast. ... we got 80% more to develop though, and need community help.
- Andrew Deal
What do you think the effect will be on Friendfeed??
- 77Agency
Mike: if something works great on all mobile platforms it isn't actually great. You've got to optimize for each one, at least in today's world.
- Robert Scoble
My guess is that Oprah will be #1 on Twitter in a month or two. She has over a million followers in 28 days without really trying. Aplusk may have more but he also has tweeted more than 40x as much. Look out Scoble, Ashton will probably run here once Oprah takes his Twitter crown.
- Garin Kilpatrick
I am excited. Tomorrow afternoon another piece of the real-time web launches that I have been waiting for since November. It is so good I am running it on its own computer.
4pm PST means its a West coast company, maybe its Microsoft unveiling some streaming social software embedded in their OS? Oh the Google buying piece doesn't add up
- Sudha Jamthe
Scoble: I'm just giving you a hard time :)
- Eric Florenzano
I'm pretty sure I know what it is - I haven't seen it like Scoble though
- Jesse Stay
Robert - I love how even after all these years, you still get excited. It's one of your more endearing qualities. I've only been around since last July but no longer get excited LOL.
- Mona Nomura
Mona: when an entrepreneur or team gives me something I didn't have before I get excited.
- Robert Scoble
Ha! The Scoble Tease. I'm excited FOR you and no idea what it is. Now bring it on...
- Nakeva Corothers
Mona: I also like to see if I was right. Most of the time I am but Clikball is an example of something that looked more useful than it really was.
- Robert Scoble
An interesting thing is that a major component of cliKball is real-time.
- Eric Florenzano
Marshall: call me. You should be there.
- Robert Scoble
cliKball is great, just only if you have tons of free time to surf the web
- patrick
I'm mad at clikball - I can't delete it from Firefox. All my search results have Clikball results even after removing the extension.
- Jesse Stay
Hmm... I actually just uninstalled the clikball FF extension and no longer see the clikball results when searching on google.
- Kevin Whalen
Kevin I think I had an earlier version, probably why the uninstall didn't remove that for me.
- Jesse Stay
product teases are so fun ;) I hope it's at least as exciting as a bloomberg terminal..lol...And I note, you said ONE computer, and nothing about the number of screens....I sure hope they're beefed up for the Scoble Effect at release time.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'm interested now, looking forward to the live stream.
- 321
Could it be Fluid Info? Robert interviewed Terry Jones, the president a while ago. The technology seemed very interesting... Let's see: Here is the Part I of the interview: http://www.kyte.tv/ch...
- Juan Pons
Juan: I really hope so! I'm very excited about Fluid Info.
- Eric Florenzano
Not that he would tell us if we guessed correctly...
- Juan Pons
Could it be Microsoft Office On the Web?
- Caleb Scribner
Is it the news thing you told me about that was supposed to launch in March?
- Francine Hardaway
I just checked Oprah's Twitter feed. 0 updates, following 9 people. At least @ev is one of them.
- John E. Bredehoft
Just realized that I'm not following any of these 9 people on my current (relatively new) Twitter account. Shaq and Ev, your stats are about to increase. No offense, Ellen.
- John E. Bredehoft
Something tells me I already know what this weekend's TWiT is going to be all about. :p
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Jeremiah: that's what happens when you stop blogging. :-)
- Robert Scoble
i think it has awhile before stars hit FF. I haven't seen any with one yet. have you?
- Rachael Depp
I think updates are more important than followers and by that there is absolutely no comparison.
- Travis Koger
This morning Oprah wasn't subscribed to anyone. This afternoon it was 4 people, now it's 9. Not that I'm uh, looking at her, uh, ^EOF
- Kevin Fox
Like with house prices, the race to a million is fine, until people actually start looking at the numbers and realize'a million followers' isn't actually worth a million users. I sit and await the Great Twitter Crash of 2010...
- Johnny Worthington
My prediction is that @aplusk will overtake @cnnbrk at around 10pm EST tonight.
- Mike Reynolds
So true, I hope twitter is ready for Oprah mania, I wonder how a lot of the new twitter users would react if they had to experience the great fail whale season of 2008
- Wayne Sutton
How soon before oprah is talking about twitter "fail whales" on her show? Lol
- Kevin Whalen
@Oprah will overtake @plusk & @cnnbrk within days. Will millions of new @Oprah fans dominate the conversations on Twitter?
- Steve Levin
So Oprah joins Twitter and promotes it. A whole slew of new people comes and sign up... then what? Without a form of 'education', there is going to be a lot of passive users, or worse for Twitter, a lot of people seeing the novelty in following celebs then once it wears off, never coming back. The success of this relies on the explanation and demonstration of it tomorrow on the show. Let's all pray for no fail whales...
- Johnny Worthington
Here, and in Twitter, I'm always more interested in content, than people. As for celebs, I generally find them very uninteresting.
- Ian May
The celebs are almost all PAINFULLY annoying to follow or read tweets from, but the herds still follow, I don't get it. I guess the herds are... still herds.
- Kemp Edmonds
from twhirl
Twitter is turning into a National Enquirer Rag
- johnpiercy
Celebs claiming this is the power of social media. Such obvious nonsense: it's the power of big media.
- Michael Krigsman
Jeremiah, I need a shoulder to cry on
- Jesse Stay
What makes me sad is that, given Johnny's thoughtful sentiments above, it seems likely that a lot of people will be "meh, this social media stuff is BORING" and then be deterred from checking out more interesting apps like FF in the future. Bummer.
- Adam Lasnik
Scoble: No not you too please NOOOOOOOO!
- Kemp Edmonds
@aplusk's account now shows 1,963,812 followers. Suddenly up by 1M or so. What gives?
- Mike Reynolds
The celeb influx on Twitter proves that it's all about who you follow. If you don't follow them, then no problem. Your experience is largely unchanged.
- Jared Smith
I love it :) Too fast, so I dialed it down by immediately switching over to one of my LISTS - that was way better! List Mgmt is a must for real time feed mfmt
- Susan Beebe
Oh man this is really addicting already.
- Justin Yost
I like the look, and the way the new likes and comments just show up as part of the post instead of a whole new line. But the whole thing being real time, and updating while you are trying to write out a comment is a bit much. I imagine if you are following thousands of people this will become really hard to manage.
- Simon Wicks
Firendfeed's problem isn't down to technology its down to name. Twitter has been behind FF for ages, but its name and the whole "Tweet" thing latches on with average people where as FF appeals to geeks like us that can appreaciate the differences and can remember more than one technology buzz work.
- Mark Ritchie
Feed aggregation and sharing meets real-time messaging--this is a powerful unified communications platform--wait till they integrate real-time video!
- Rory Conway
well it's a pretty radical change, at first glance I like but can see how this is going to be very difficult to keep up with
- Dave Schwab
ok now it works hmm i think ive seen this beforeeeee ooo twitter maybe
- Stuart Evans
from twhirl
FF needs rating (like) of comments - how do they want to filter the good ones at live speed otherwise
- Andreas Klinger
Looks kinda like Twitter, but that's not bad because I like Twitter! :)
- Svartling
I like how the content is moved to the left and and the operations are to the right.
- Todd Hoff
Found the link to this entry: click on the time (how un-intuitive :)
- Rui Pereira
i like the create a feed button this will be good for collaboration
- Damian Holmes
Twitter crashed; wonder if this buzz helped
- Kathryn Martyn
@mark ritchie - no, I don't think this is the problem. The mass market doesn't neccessarily want an overwhelmingly rich feature set. A simple proposition/UI often satisfies more people. Friendfeed, (and to an extent twitter tools such as tweetdeck) turns digital communication into a full-time occupation - as William Gibson said '‘They sat around accessing [social] media all day and talking about it, and nothing ever seemed to get done.’'
- jeremy ettinghausen
Damian - thanks for noticing that - sounds cool huh?!
- Susan Beebe
Not so sure all feeds should be equal. Knowing something from twitter for example is critical to the amount of attention I'll give it.
- Todd Hoff
Seems much faster, love the real-tome comments.
- Alex Scrivener
FF has been my best bud for close to a year. without a solid aggregator feature, i'm gonna hafta get a new best friend.
- MikeAmundsen
not sure i like mixing users and groups into subscriptions, either. like the DM option (we'll see how that goes), like the "My Discussions" (do that lots now)
- MikeAmundsen
Wow. This is a game changer. By commenting on an entry in the main feed you are basically initiating a direct message conversation with everyone who is tuned into that entry.
- Barak B
easier to use, seems to be faster than the older and i like the new presentation :) !
- Alice Cordonnier
Like the UI - less wasted space & grouping of items more visual. I love innovation:)
- Dave
Still needs some work: Can't add new feeds, updates are too fast, no preferences ... Like it thou!
- Rui Pereira
Generally like all the design changes. Looks nice.
- Todd Hoff
When I'm reading comments and they start scrolling down, that is not good. I drink from a glass, not a firehose.
- Todd Hoff
it shouldn't be like real time ... and the style is not good too ...
- Viva Vida
what as the big fuss about? its good, but not "great"! and plenty of beta issues - like the offscreen updates shifting text you are reading "onscreen"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @scobelizer, is there an underhanded deal going on that we don't know about... you're note usually *this* pawny about the hype!
- simran
