People are still arguing with @scobleizer about FriendFeed? It's like arguing with Soulja Boy or Waka Flocka about why Hip Hop is dead.

TOTAL LOL - iTad
Don't get me wrong, @scobleizer is that dude in most cases, but arguing with him is an exercise in futility. He's not normal. It's like trying to convince Mo Kargas he shouldn't kill all humans, or telling Louis Gray to take a nap. - Rah-PM 2012

Dirty little secret: I have always associated SXSW with music and can't for the life of me figure out why all these tech people are there romping it up. (ok, I know, but it will always be a MUSIC conference to me). - Martha
Same with my parents. My dad plays bass and mom used to be a promoter. They feel the same way as you :) - Rah-PM 2012
Back in my band days, the ultimate was to get a gig playing SXSW. So it will always be that way for me. How cool that your parents were both in the biz. Now I see where the musical talent comes from. - Martha

Poll: Americans pretty clueless about politics, world | Raw Story - http://rawstory.com/2010...
Poll: Americans pretty clueless about politics, world | Raw Story
"Only one in four Americans know how many votes a Senate filibuster requires. One in three know the name of the chairman of the Republican Party. One in two know the Democratic leader of the US Senate. Health care? Fewer than one in three Americans even know that no Republicans voted for the Senate health care overhaul. Americans' ignorance about politics isn't new, but the latest results from the Pew Poll suggest few are really paying attention. Half of Americans don't even know that Stephen Colbert is a comedian. And among those surveyed, only one in three Democrats knew that Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) was the Democratic leader." - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet
It also stems from a media culture that privileges sound byte sensationalistic crap over their damn duty to actually inform the republic. GAAAHHHHHH!!!!! *flogs personal dead horse* - Ayşe E.
(No actual horses were harmed in this display of disgust.) - Ayşe E.
so what do they think stephen colbert is? - Felicia Yue
In the US, I also believe it stems from a general history of subordinating the importance of government and politics to the individual activities of a free people's daily lives. Of course, another trillion dollars in debt and who knows what might become most important? - jeff hammond
the democrats vetoing against the health care plan I get it its buy partisan and interest groups so the diagnoses is democracy is alive. Iconic politics as were used to has to be more party politics but there was action on the right to abort gay babys with guns outside the military so as to relive the statesqou of the fact that change is slow there are advantage to being gay in the military but don,t expect the gay check to go away just yet . - Gratten

a Google fangirl's take: no doubt Buzz's privacy issues are seriously problematic, but at least they're iterating quickly and openly.
I see no option to choose a screenname or shut off location at all. It's an eye-opener seeing random buzz from people around me and I betcha they did not know first hand that it's a very personal broadcast. That's why I cannot recommend buzz to my followers yet. But in the future, I can see a good use for buzz to tell people about a location. - j.ash from iPod

"Caffeine is a system applet that allows the user to temporarily inhibit both the screensaver and the sleep power saving mode, simply by clicking on it. All computers are hard to use; general-use operating systems can do very little about this. What matters is how *discoverable* the system is. - i80and

It occurs to me watching all the C-SPAN clips on the daily show how often they use poster board for presentations in the House and Senate. I don't think I have made something on poster board since junior high school science fair, yet there are Ivy League-educated staffers using construction paper and glue sticks every day to run this country.
Is there a projector in Congress? Like a DVI-cable-for-PowerPoint-style projector? Do they do things like that in Congress? - Bret Taylor
Bret: they didn't let me use my laptop in the Senate Chambers. They have signs that say to leave your electronic devices outside. The rules in Congress are asinine. - Robert Scoble
It is kind of amazing that they drafting important legislation like TARP, and to get it to pass, someone has to spend time pasting pictures and construction paper on poster board to make it happen. "The Senator says it needs more glitter, and he perfers Comic Sans for the title." - Bret Taylor
On the other hand, they do use Wordpress in the Speaker of the House's office: http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Robert Scoble
And Congressman John Culbertson uses Qik and Twitter: http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Robert Scoble
I think there's some benefit to keeping PowerPoint out of government hearings. They're bad enough already. - Jim Norris
Jim: There are a lot of benefits though. They are electronic and contain indexable text, and since congressional hearing are (or after some number of years become) part of the public record, PPT or equivalent would mean you could publicly archive presentations much more effectively than videos of poster board. - Bret Taylor
I love talking with Katie Jacobs Stanton about her experience going from Google (arguably one of the most connected, high tech places on earth) to the White House (arguably, well ... not). They're changing things over there, though. The question is, how can we get more people like us -- career technologists and inventors -- to spend more time over there. - DeWitt Clinton
Perhaps it has to do more with not wanting to sit in a dark room and also letting the TV cameras see what is being presented? - John Cooper
No electronic devices does seem crazy. Instead of sleeping, the representatives and senators could be googling all sorts of stuff to see if what their colleagues are saying is actually true. - Robert Felty
Robert: I think that rule was just for the press, though. Congresscritters carry a Blackberry or two and John Culberson was trying to Tweet and Qik from the House floor. - Robert Scoble
It might have something to do with security (or the theatre of security). Working in DC now, I have to register my laptop to enter federal buildings and sign it out when I leave. Mostly theatre - they know I have a laptop when I get there because they scan my bag, but they don't check if I have the same laptop, or a laptop at all when I leave. - Sarah Miller
Tweet I saw the other day from @webb: "in DC, we need people who can translate geek into wonk." missed speaker name #tsp09 - Laura Norvig
Wait, there's a job translating geek to wonk? I've missed my calling!!! - FFing Enigma
Isn't it amazing how backward our leaders are, not that I endorse a crackberry using Prez. - Jason Nunnelley
PowerPoint is a bad way to communicate and a horrible way to deliberate. Courtrooms tend to use poster boards and other low tech presentation techniques as well (though they will show videos and the like as necessary). It's somewhat more work for the presenter, but I don't think it's really all that awful, and it forces people to pay attention to content rather than whizzy tricks. - ⓞnor
It explains a lot. Everyone in DC is high on Sharpie ink. - SteVe C
@FFing: By the time you get from thinkin' Geek to walkin' Wonk to actin' Hack the signal loss approacheth five 9's, no matter the presentation media. - michael silverton
Fills you with confidence, don't it. :( - Robert Hafer
It's as if our method of government -- as opposed to system -- is still operated by Pony Express, so that we can communicate with and aggregate the Will of the People in every covered wagon on every homestead settlement. Granted, there are a handful of moderns who have reluctantly adopted the automobile and who haltingly realize that "As goes GM, so goes the nation." I once heard Senator Conan say that, "In the year 2000, we'll have Digital Direct Democracy," but what of the Tyranny of the Majority? ;-) - michael silverton
I think part of the issue is that the House and Senate chambers weren't built with the use of projectors and screens in mind. Just looking at pictures of the rooms, I can't really figure out a good place to put a projector without having to kick Senators/Reps out of their seats to clear a spot for the projector and a path for the projection. And with the presiding officers sitting smack... more... - Brian Chang
Yeah. we would like to reduce the number of UK MP's and would happily replace them with projectors (or maybe just lamps). - pazzer1
Most hearing rooms don't work well for A/V. During the August recess, we used to watch a movie every Friday afternoon in the main hearing room. It never worked well. The windows are big, the lighting is a zoo (they have several sets of lights for TV, etc) and the members' seats are on a stairs that folks were tripping over. We ended up aiming the movie on the side wall as it was the only one big enough without paintings or other things. Poster boards are just the easiest way to do it. - Andrew Leyden
Someone probably told the Congressional aide, "just make sure you don't buy the Monster cable", and he bailed on the projector idea altogether :) - Ana

"As you all know I have been using Linux for a long, long time. I have installed countless distributions: Some of them have seen long-term use, while some of them have been nothing more than a flash in the pan. Ubuntu is one of those that has come and gone for me. I have used it on many occasions, been generally impressed with its offerings, but ultimately gone back to another distribution for one reason or another. I have seen, over the last few Ubuntu releases, a serious decline in performance. Starting somewhere around 7.04, each successive release grew progressively more and more sluggish. From boot times to application start up times, Ubuntu seemed to be coming to a slow painful crawl. With 9.04 Ubuntu has made a complete turnaround." - Alejandro from Bookmarklet
Cool, but will I finally get sound on my laptop? - TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
I completly agree: ubuntu 7 was really fast, 8 was a bit slower but still enought for me. I updated to 9 because I read it was faster in some aspects, but is not true. Perhaps it's only the intel video card issue but if they don't fix it in short I'll go back to 8. BTW, which distribution have you switch to?. Un saludo! - jmiguel rodriguez
yeah 9.04 is a whole new variation of previous versions. I use it as my primary O/s though of course it is not without it's problems but it has certainly improved. - Raymond Marr aka Knatchwa
9.04 is 8.10 with new wallpaper and faster boot. What people want: most addon hardware still don't work. This should have been labeled 8.11. Most defectors I see, and that is most who try it, defect because a webcam, a USB device still doesn't work on it. 9.04 did nothing to fix those problems. Is faster boot a real issue for serious users? You're joking. PC Mag agrees: http://tinyurl.com/c73o4l - Bob
@freemor: thank you, I tried it and looks faster, but it freezes (mouse works) after 10 minutes or so, so I went back to original config. I'll keep on Jaunty waiting for a new driver. @bob: I upgraded to v9 because that was just what I expect, but in fact I've got a slower system (not to talk about amarok 2.0 sh!t) - jmiguel rodriguez
@jmiguel: I've seen a lot of comments about it. Most people recommend going back to Amarok 1.4 http://ff.im/2sBxp - Alejandro
@Alejandro: I've already done it. Most of my mp3 collection (those strange things not in spotify :-)) didn't play with amarok 2.0. Cannot understard this ubuntu movement... - jmiguel rodriguez
Amarok is independent of Ubuntu. btw, because of the Open Source movement, you can choose among several free applications that provide the same functionality. I personally don't use Amarok, I prefer Rhythmbox. - Alejandro
Never used it, I'll give a try. I've been using amarok for long. I did the comment about ubuntu because looks like they have prefer to release at time instead of waiting for something more stable. - jmiguel rodriguez

Sharpening the Intel Driver Focus (State of the Linux graphics drivers) - http://keithp.com/blogs...
"The good news is that our redesign is now complete, and we have the architecture we want in place throughout the system — global graphics memory management, kernel mode setting and per-window 3D buffers. This means that the rate of new code additions to the driver has dropped dramatically; almost to zero. Going forward, users should expect this ‘perfect’ combination to work more reliably, faster and better as time goes by." - imabonehead from Bookmarklet

Andy on Enterprise Software » You did check that spreadsheet, right? - http://andyonenterprisesoftware.com/2008...
"A lawyer on the Barclays buyout of Lehman Brothers defunct assets had drawn up an Excel spreadsheet detailing the particular trading contracts that Barclays was prepared to accept as part of the deal. The lawyer took out 179 particularly undesirable contracts, but rather than deleting the cells, marked them as “hidden” cells in Excel. This was all fine until a first year legal associate who was helping to put together the final paperwork converted the spreadsheet to a PDF file and, you guessed it, managed to include all the hidden cells as well as the items Barclays was supposed to be agreeing to buy. The deal has now gone through, and Barclays are frantically trying to reverse this mistake. I imagine that the Lehman’s administrators will be most sympathetic when the case gets to court." - Brian Newman from Bookmarklet
