Two things strike me as amusing about this. 1) The fact that so many of us liked this entry (and, by extension, undoubtedly like the shirt). 2) The probability that many of us actually still use Twitter, conscious of the fact that practically no one really cares what we tweet :D
- Adam Lasnik
Search Engines can't Retweet, I try to make my tweets between 120-130max so that there is plenty of ReTweeting room.
- Garin Kilpatrick
Who says these are mutually exclusive? And who is the bigger audience, the people reading your blog (subscribers) or people using Google to search for things? [edit] Just posted a rambling response on the post now.
- AJ Kohn
Dear publishers. As i never seem to check my twitter stream anymore, if nobody engages with your content, hence it's not on friendfeed, i can't keep up. this is all
- Kirill Bolgarov
GReader is the center of my online life. Everything else is a way of feeding content into it or commenting on things that come out of it.
- Alex Scrivener
I agree, this new "movement" away from RSS is ridiculous. Striking a balance between RSS & Twitter is more important. There's too much noise in between links to post on Twitter (either from that account or just from all the other people you follow).
- Tyler Hayes
Maybe we could get 20% or so of the people building yet another URL shortening service to help build out a webhook/pubsub notification network instead.
- Ken Sheppardson
+1 Kirill - I'd say content has to be noticed to get noticed. Twitter RT is one way. FriendFeed likes/comments is better. Digg/Slashdot/yourfavoritesite is another.
- Eric Johnson
content has to be noticed to get noticed - absolutely!
- Kirill Bolgarov
I don't want them to go away from RSS. I just want the Twitter option, as well.
- dannysullivan
Dear twitterers. If all you publish in your tweetstream is the RSS stream of your blog, I won't follow you. That's what my G Reader is for.
- TobiasVerhoog.com
Why does posting a blog to twitter make it more digestible than using an RSS?
- James Ketchell
So how do I balance getting posts into twitter -- where danny can find them -- but also not into twitter, so they won't turn Tobias off? One twitter account for RSS, and second one for me? Mix up the RSS and other sharing posts? Only send the best RSS stories to Twitter?
- Eric Johnson
Eric it sounds to me like your describing what friendfeed does already....
- James Ketchell
from fftogo
Bring everything into FriendFeed and have it drop links into the Twitterstream when appropriate
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken that's exactly what I was thinking. Its what I do already. Everything into friendfeed and then just select which items to go onto twitter.
- James Ketchell
from fftogo
Do you want a Twitter feed or just that the blog posts show up in my Tweet stream? I certainly do the latter manually.
- AJ Kohn
See mates, FF is way, way more valuable than Twitter. Scoble, where are you? Say your word =)
- Kirill Bolgarov
Eric, yes, you run two accounts. Look at my personal blog, http://daggle.com. Want to keep updated on the content? You can (1) visit via web (2) get email alerts (3) take the RSS feed (4) subscribe to http://twitter.com/daggle and get a ping anytime I put up a post. Offering a Twitter feed of blog posts is just another option. It's more choice for the reader. I'm not saying dump any of...

- dannysullivan
To thin that twitter replaces anything other than RSS "Headlines" is ludicrous. I get the best news via RSS. I see the Hottest news via FriendFeed and twitter (more so friendfeed). I may even see the links first in friendfeed and twitter, but I like having my rss reader keeping track of the days news that's important to me. Oh - and yeah publishing your entire blog via twitter is just lame, headlines are fine thanks. (pics and excerpts on FF though!)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I can't say this enough, so I won't keep going on about it. Offering a feed on Twitter is not a replacement for an RSS feed. I didn't say that. That won't work for everyone. But yes, some people are relying on Twitter more and more for news. It's a huge source of news IN ADDITION TO other ways that people find news. Offering a Twitter feed for a blog is easy to do, secures your blog's...

I send my blog posts to twitter/identi.ca via twitterfeed. I always take feedback via twitter/identi.ca. I do prefer RSS to a pure twitter feed of a blog though. I will miss something from twitter/identi.ca. RSS allows me to read it on my terms in my own time, not as the twitter firehose streams by.
- Amy H.
danny - Thanks for sparking the great discussion. I can see how the two-Twitter stream does make sense for Twitter-centric folk. But I've gotta say I wish everybody was on Friendfeed, in which case the multi-channel problem would go away. We're not there yet.
- Eric Johnson
I shouldn't be too harsh on my 59 year old mother. She realized about 7 years ago that it's cheaper to build a PC than buy one, and she knows more about putting together PCs today than I do! She's built at least 8-10 in that time, including for other people! :-)
- Duncan Riley
Wow your Mom is great! Maybe she can build a space ship 4 us? Better be ready than sorry!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
My mother was the one who introduced me to Prodigy, AOL, e-mail and Mosaic. She has been blogging since 2004, and once had AT&T providing funding for her educational technology Web startup. She's on Facebook and FriendFeed and uses Firefox. It's the generation above her who has trouble.
- Louis Gray
My mom is 63 and smoking on the internet. I doubt she would switch either but she knows how to get around.
- Sandra Williams
It is a good point to remember. While I doubt the Chrome team thought about that demographic when putting together the UI, at least the OPTION of doing so would be nice. I'm all for keeping apps simple to use ( including the ones I write - i avoid using the file menu at all costs), but there are something that you do need to include.
- Roberto Bonini
Firefox has the option to keep bookmarks open in a sidebar (or browsing history, or my delicious bookmarks). View > sidebar
- Robert Felty
Actually, I don't keep a sidebar open with my favorites (didn't know I could!), but I do still use IE. I've tried Firefox, in fact use it to edit my business website, but haven't found any compelling reason to switch. And without a compelling reason, I am a creature of habit. Looking forward to trying chrome, though. Just haven't had time to download it. .....Bret's mom

When we have national leaders openly espousing suspicion of science, stuff like this shouldn't be a surprise.
- Chrimmus Tad
@Tad - this has nothing to do with that - there have been people for decades convinced about all sorts of insane conspiracies. Whether a politician is "suspicious" of science or not won;t ever change that. The internet just lets these paranoid types congregate. Hell, the more the politicians say somehting is good the more these freaks dislike it.

i sent my sister this article, Jaden my nephew is 4 month we are still debating this in our house it is a very real topic at home she just wrote back to me : Hey thanks for the article, It cleared up some things. I bought the book this guy wrote I wanna see what he says. (my sister is a molecular biologist)
- Caroline
So cute... Wish I had kids. :-( At 28, I suddenly had laser-eyes for kids anytime one came in the room. It took about 3 years to get used to this new "kid-fascination". Alas, still looking for a soul-mate...
- Mitchell Tsai
Selma: Some kids are real "hams". It's a shame our US school system drills the creativity out of so many kids. Sitting in chairs for 8 hrs a day, listening to teachers even when they are boring. Good practice for boring-9-to-5-employees. Awful practice for entrepreneurs starting their own businesses, organizations, and projects.
- Mitchell Tsai
yeah ...true ...it's the same here in Iran too(probably even worse since the creativity is closely controlled and limited here even after the school years are finished)
- Selma
How many of us on FriendFeed do you think would be labelled ADD if we were 5-8 yrs old?
- Mitchell Tsai
What Mitchell said. Worser in other parts of the World (like the school I just finished. College doesn't promise to be much better)
- Yuvi
Well said, Mitchell. The system we live in needs an upgrade.
- Vincent X
I agree with Mitchell. we need renovate the school educational system.
- Mahdi Ebrahimi
Vincent: I think one of the major upgrades is shifting from the "doctor, lawyer, teacher, policeman" careers to the make-your-own-dream career - which can be scary, financially risky (note - most blogger lifestyles), but amazingly rich. How can we mix (1) delivering what others want (2) with what we want to give. Traditional US schools are for baby-sitting farmer's kids and creating "yes" people. What are the next steps? (e.g. in semi-VC words, not just how do you monetize, but how do you survive?)

how willing are you as a blogger when realizing that over time and circumstances you viewpoints might have changed to write about those changes - positive or negative
I'd like to say very willing. Have to see where I've changed my mind. I notice Robert Scoble is quite willing to do this.
- Hutch Carpenter
NEVER! More seriously, I'm always willing to say I was wrong, and I'm more than willing to change my mind about any topic. I know some who read stuff I've written here and there might think it impossible, but it's really true! Now I just have to wait until I'm finally wrong about something... ;)
- abacab
Sometimes I look back on my old posts and think they're not as heavily trafficked so I leave them alone -- unless there's reason to revisit the issue(s). If I feel that my viewpoints changed drastically (and I have reason to discuss it), I'll make a new post to say "hey, I was wrong, and I learned from it."

One of the great benefits of blogging is the trail of ideas you leave behind. Looking back at what we've written should give us an idea of how far we've come in our personal knowledge growth. It also gives us a benchmark to how willing we are to go out on a dangerous limb of uncertainty. Looking over posts from a year ago I've come to realize that I need to do more "thinking" out loud, not play it as safe.

Our tap water tastes horrible. Yech. Even the filter on the fridge can't make it taste better. I don't mind the stuff that goes through the dedicated "triple osmosis" type machines like we have at work, but the only straight-from-the-tap water that goes into my mouth is for is brushing my teeth and cooking.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Tap water rocks! I liked it when someone first told me a few years back to spell Evian backwards.
- Thomas Hawk
can't stand tap water for some reason
- Chris Harris
I miss NY tap water, which tasted like chlorine. KY and TN water taste like dirt, and I bet there's ameebas in there trying to give me Ebola.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
We push our tap water through a Brita filter but I'd never drink the stuff straight. It has an unfortunate flavor and, unless we run the tap for 30 seconds, comes out cloudy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
tap water in florida (orlando or jacksonville) doesn't taste good unless it's filtered
- acedanger
I like my tap water as it's from a local well although it is filtered through my fridge. The only bottled water I buy is Fiji or Dasani if I'm not at home to drink tap water.

- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Gotta love those waiters who approach you at the restaurant asking you if you want "still" or "sparkling." No thanks, I'll just be the cheapskate who takes the regular old tap water.
- Thomas Hawk
Recently a friend of mine was telling me about how much safer bottled water is for you over tap water and I was like, but, but, but, you smoke. Isn't that far worse for you than drinking tap water ever could be? He didn't get it.
- Thomas Hawk
Like most things in life, there's not one answer here. Some tap water is better than others. Our municipal supply is decent enough but somewhere between there and my sink, it turns cloudy. So, nope, not drinking it just to spite the bottled water industry.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I drink the water filtered through my fridge like a freaking fish
- acedanger
It can take a while until you happen to discover that your tap water is full of lead. I believe those bottled water companies are a bit faster.
- Benedikt Koehler
apparently one of the sources of Dasani is the Detroit river...yum!

Tap water definitely wins. Good stuff. Haven't the cutting edge Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod wannabes decided bottled water is bad because the plastic releases dioxins or something? They say not to drink it if it's been heating up sitting in your car, but all of that happens on the delivery truck long before you buy the bottle. Personally, I prefer the metallic taste of tap to the plastic taste of bottled, anyway.
- Urban Thought Collective
Must see the Penn & teller B.S. episode on bottled water. Most of it is from the local public supply.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
This is why I slapped a filter on my tap. Works just as well.

Sheesh, I have been phone less in the car for 3 and a half hours and am shocked I caused this discussion! I still stand by tap water.
- Michelle Martinez
I'm a tap fan, most bottled water tastes like plastic to me.
- Steve Spalding
Tap water always tastes better if you fill a jug and refrigerate it, which also allows the deposits and crap to settle on the bottom. That's what makes tap taste bad if it does.
- Michael W. May
plus, the biggest problem with bottled water is all the bottles.

Cecily excellent description of Essence these days.

Harder still is having the wisdom to find people who are "better than you."
- Steve Spalding
There's the flip side. Most people are so engrossed with themselves, they don't provide any opportunity for others to ask for help. In other words, making ourselves approachable is as important as being able to ask for help.
- ·[▪_▪]·
The most successful people I know all have one thing in common: they've surrounded themselves with successful people, i.e.: the "others" that you allude to.
- Kevin C. Tofel
That's absolutely right. I've never met a really successful individual who was afraid to hire, work with etc . . . people who are better than they are. @nicerobot I completely agree, almost as hard as asking for help is being the type of person who can be asked.
- Steve Spalding
I recently asked someone I look up to for help and was disappointed in their response. they liked my work and what I showed them. When I asked someone else that I didn't really expect to have any great advice, he pointed out every flaw in my design, explained what was wrong with it, and a couple possible ways to go about fixing it... help can come from the most surprising places and people.
- Kyle A Koch
i have half of that down. i know my limitations :)
- Chris Harris
Not claiming to be one of the "most clever people in the world" but I have never understood people's desire to suppress the ability of people around them to grow - the way I see it the better the people I am surrounded by become, the better I will become.
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
It's exactly the test I use with FF and all that. I love following interesting people because I think I always end up with the better part of the bargain.
- Steve Spalding
Closely related to the idea that good leaders delegate.
- cecily
@Shey Definitely. Sure you can learn anything in the world if you wanted to (and there are bunches of stuff that you should), but especially if you are managing a project you need to be able to know where your real strengths lay.
- Steve Spalding
This is also the sign of a good manager.
- Mark Krynsky
And what about those other people that help the clever people making up for their limitations?
- Benedikt Koehler
An earlier commentator brought that up, and I think that's equally as important. I think people underestimate the benefits of helping others. You never know when the five minutes you take out of your day to do something good for someone else will turn into something great for you. Even if it doesn't, you probably still "gain" more than the cost in time.
- Steve Spalding
I think anyone that tries to suppress the ability of those around them to grow, is usually insecure in their own achievement levels. If I need help I'll ask, but the responses can be a sort of "protectionism." The person you've asked for help doesn't want to help as they feel it somehow reduces their own value by sharing knowledge with you.
- Ian May
That's also a good point. We're all guilty of it, especially in situations we don't feel "control over." The old saying is pretty dead on, knowledge is power and sharing that knowledge can be pretty painful. At the end of the day though, I think you gain a lot more than you lose. I always learn something from getting the perspective of others.
- Steve Spalding
A true sign of arrogance is blaming someone else for your ignorance
- Bwana ☠
Also, what is a limitation, and what is simply an underutilized skill? How can you tell if you're inherently bad at something, or just not good at it yet?
- Brent Newhall
There's the art. My test is whether I have an intuition for how it could be done if I just had the skill set. A good example is that I know how to write and as an extension I know how to arrange podcasts (even though my audio editing skills aren't that great). Video, on the other hand, is an entirely different animal and when I'm dealing with it I defer to the wisdom of others when I can.
- Steve Spalding
In the VC world, we often say "A people hire A people, B people hire C people, and..." A major part of this "ranking" (which I tried to fight for many years) is that many people (i.e. the supposed B and C people) are afraid to hire people better than them - for fear of (1) losing control (2) employee learning stuff & jumping ship (3) employee stealing stuff. It's sad. I tried for ages to fight the mentality of "rating" people, but it's so much a reality. It's HARD to find open-minded people.
- Mitchell Tsai
Shey: Funny thing is receptionists in Internet companies are usually much better than CEOs at predicting whether companies will succeed or fail. Why? Receptionists have often worked 20-30+ companies, whereas the "Internet" CEO has only seen 1-3 companies before starting one. Also, very sad, something is missing in our college/MBA/MS/PhD education in entrepreneurship, team-building, etc... It's a very good education to have been in Google, Microsoft, or some company that has seen int/ext scaling issues.
- Mitchell Tsai
I agree on the MBA/MS etc . . . portion. It's so rare that anyone focuses on the mechanics of team building and leadership. It seems to run counter to the way most academic programs are taught.
- Steve Spalding

Trouble is, none of us are born with these thoughts - they're thoughts they've learned through the words and actions of others."
