"You are absolutely right when you say that rakthi is an X-factor. Once it is accepted as an x-factor you cannot define it!! That is what I wanted to prove through the post in the first place. Ultimately everyone likes r dislikes something and then starts using definitions, jargons, technical terms etc to understand why they like something and from there on a huge theory is built up with definitions etc. Rakthi is one such classical expression as is bhavam ike you mentioned." - Sanjay Subrahmanyan

A Mother's Love (I need a game she can win) - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by oeolycus It's beyond me because I don't have my own children, but there must be something deeply satisfying for a mom to have raised 3 children that regularly kick her butt at board games. She's no dullard either; rather, like a mother brontosaurus, it is her inability "to see the sweet fruit for the enormous tar pit that encircles it." That is to say, often she finds herself drawn to the 10 clay sitting in Agricola's wagon and then struggles to find a way to convert it into points. I need a game my mom can win. I think her patience for losing is nearly out! Can you help me? It's a difficult balance to strike as the rest of the group will balk at something too luck-driven. We've tried Carcassonne with some success, but she would rather play Agricola. She likes a challenge! I've played a 1v1 in Agricola against her where we debated each option and she beat me 44-43, but it was mentally exhausting for her. I need something rich in options with perhaps a slight luck-factor and a...

Game for a 10 and 13 year old to play without adults - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by offshegoes I'm looking for recomendations for a game to get my nephews for their birthday. Currently they pretty much only play video games on their own but when we visit they really enjoy board games. So far it's been their games we play, kids cranium, clue, monopoly. They live 3 hours away and their parents aren't really into sitting down and playing a board game with them so it'd have to be something they could play with each other without any direction (aside from the first couple of plays where I could help them) As far as theme they're into dragons, super heros, and anything that's "gross" The older one(turning 13)is into sciencey stuff and the younger (turning 10) more into sports. Ideally it would be playable by the two of them but able to play more if my partner and I, their parents or friends wanted to play. Looking forward to you suggestions and thanks in advance!

New to boardgames, what should I get to expand my new collection? - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by 4ndrz My friends and I have recently gotten into boardgames pretty hardcore. So far I have got Fire and Axe, Memoir 44 + Eastern Front Expansion and Godstorm, while my friends collectively have Carcassonne, Arkham Horror, Starcraft, Last Night on Earth. Pretty soon they'll acquire Commands and Colors: Ancients, Diplomacy and probably Settlers of Catan. We're all roommates, so its kind of like a communal pot of games. But anyway, I should be getting some new money soon, and I'm trying to figure out what game I should get. I'm interested in wargaming, preferably more strategic leveled or more simulationist than M44 is. I'm also somewhat considering Eurogames, but I'm not sure which. Mainly, I have no idea what to get. I was considering co-op games, but I think we'd prefer something more competitive. Mostly I've been looking at Paths of Glory, Colosseum, El Grande. But I'm still torn. I'd go with Paths of Glory, but it's hard to find at a reasonable price. I just want something...

A 2 player game for a 10 year old and a 38 year old (son and dad) - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by red turtle I am looking for recommendations for a game that may actually be even / fun if we play together. I think I am looking for something that is more Ameritrash in style that playes well with 2 players, yet is not really co-op. We have tried 4th Ed D&D, but I think that would work best if he only played one character and I dont have the time to develop a one player adventure. He seems to lean towards Betrayal at the House on the Hill and Bang!. We have played pandemic a bit together, but it doesnt have the same replayability for me anymore. some more background: we have played a lot of Heroscape and had a great time playing it. pro's - can make sides uneven to give balance - has some luck con's - if we just go straight head to head I will generally win without giving some serious coaching - long setup time we have also played Agricola and Stone Age together recently but I find those games hard to balance and if I play full out then he really has no chance. The game I am...

Battlelore or Command and Colors:Ancients??? - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by Harry Plopper So I'm stuck. Which one should I get? My wife and I play almost exclusively against each other, so it has to appeal to her as well. I'm probably agonizing a bit too much over this decision, but that's what this board is for. Here's what I want to know: 1. Which one is going to have better re-playability without having to buy new expansions? 2. Which one has better expansions? Assuming I decide I like it enough to expand. 3. Which one has easier to understand rules? 4. Does one have more scenarios than the other? I'm not partial to the fantasy or ancient stuff too much. Either one will trip my trigger. Does the lore thing in Battlelore make the game that different than CCA? Thanks!

Advice needed - which games are too much like algebra homework? - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by jedimusic Over the past few years we've been following bgg reviews/news and growing our game collection. We've had a few hits and misses in our game group (mostly family and a few friends). Examples of Hits: Ticket to Ride, Thurn and Taxis, Carcassonne, Arkadia, Jamaica, Niagara, Pirate's Cove (too long for some, but fun). For Christmas, one of us got Pillars of the Earth and when playing for the first time, his wife uttered a very succinct review: "This game is only slightly more fun than algebra." Then halfway through the game: "So when do we actually play?" I am trying to avoid these "algebraic" games - I'm not saying I personally don't like them; I think Pillars is a very well produced, well-designed game. My group just doesn't think they are fun. It doesn't help when they run longer than an hour. So I am trying to avoid these types of games, because face it, it's no use buying them if no one will play them with you. Other misses that fall in the "too much like algebra"...

Living Card Games (FFG) - can't decide - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by tonksey So I recently noticed the new LCG formats for Call Of Cthulhu & A Game Of Thrones. (In case anyone asks, this was way before the new advert for CoC which I've seen on the front page of BGG recently!) Naturally, my interest went up a few notches but I can't decide whether to buy one or not. I'm most keen on Call Of Cthulhu because I already love Arkham Horror & the expansions... the artwork is also great. I have noticed there seems to be some repeat artwork from Arkham Horror on CoC - how much is there out of curiosity's sake? I'm not an ex-CCG player, so I have no idea how this type of game will play or whether the LCG is a smart move to get into since the packs are all going to be fixed in distribution. It seems as though there is more going currently for AGoT LCG as there seems to be 4 Chapter packs, while only 2 Asylum packs for CoC. Any info/advice given much appreciated. Cheers, Matt...

Valley Games Titan vs. Neuroshima Hex? - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by DavidPD I'm wondering what game might be best to play with my 6 yr old son. Yes, this does sound silly but I'm thinking of what I'd like too. My son, after about three sessions, can play one country in GMT's Manoeuvre quite competently. I thought about Titan because he likes dice rolling and I feel the theme would be cool for him. Neuroshima Hex has a cool theme and is much shorter in length. The thing that worries me is the complexity of the iconography and the chess-like nature of the game. Thanks for all your input. cheers

Going to have a table made, how big should it be? - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by kookoobah I want to be able to play Arkham Horror with all the expansions on it. I want to be able to play Twilight Imperium with Shattered Empires on it. I want to be able to play Tide of Iron with the biggest scenario on it. I want to be able to play Descent with the Road to Legend map board on it. What should the measurements be? Should I go for two tables that can be put together to form one big table, or just go for one big table?

You all are responsible for this addiction so you may as well pick my next game. - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by montag66 :D It's mainly just the wife and I but every now and again we have a third (and even more rare, a fourth). We also have our 6 year old daughter play some games with us. She loves Carcassonne, TtR, and Zooroletto. But the reality is that most of our game time is spent playing 2 player so our next game should really work great for 2. Here's a list of what we currently play on a regular basis: Pandemic - Just bought it and love it. Mr. Jack - Just bought it and love it. Carcassonne - Love it and just got I&C and B&T expansions. Zooloretto - Just bought it and like it. TtR, 1910, Swiss - Love it bought have grown bored of it. Balloon Cup - Just got it for Christmas. It's a fun quick game. We are looking to diversify our collection and want a slightly heavier game. We like the idea of resource producing/gathering. About a year ago we picked up Caylus. We played it about 5 times and each time we spent more times reading the rules than actually playing the game. It became a chore...

Good farewell line for fellow gamers? - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by theotherguy Because of work, I'm going to be moving out of state here pretty soon, and unfortunately I'm leaving behind a great gaming group. I want to get a game for some of the guys, and I'd like to date/sign the inside of the box cover. I'd like to also include a clever game-related farewell line. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something clever, but not suggestive (I'm not 15 anymore). Some of the things I had in mind, but seemed kinda corny: Never stop gaming (running away with it, etc)... Keep your meeples dry... Don't always blame it on luck (the game being broken, etc)... Any other ideas? I'd really appreciate it. NOTE: I have an older account on BGG. I just created this account just in case my gaming buddies would stumble upon this post, and realize that this is for them.

Deep Game with Reasonably Straightforward/Simple Rules to Intro to Newbies - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by soojin Here's my dilemma - most of the people I game with tend to be casual players or new to the boardgaming scene but light games tend to bore me terribly. Thus I'm looking for games with depth (the heavier the better) I can introduce them where they can pick up quickly and be reasonably competitive in their 1st 1 or 2 plays. Any suggestions?

Games easily converted to forum-based - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by yawetag On a forum I'm on, there's a specific forum for games to be played in. Currently, I'm running Lunch Money (using my personal deck) and Cartagena (using a "cheap-ass" version found here, where colors are used instead of items). You can view the individual games if you'd like: Lunch Money: http://www.mafiascum.net/forum... Cartagena: http://www.mafiascum.net/forum... Lunch Money was easy to make forum-based, as all the cards are easy to understand and there's no difficulty in getting players into the game. I had to tweak the Humiliation card a bit, as it can be used at any time in live play. That would be difficult in a forum, when players don't want to wait 2-3 days between EACH card being played to see if someone throws down the Humiliation card. Cartagena was a bit more difficult, as you can see. I had to design a board that would work in a forum where tables were a bit limited. I'm done designing Yahtzee Deluxe Poker, a dice game with...

Recommendations for a 6-cost development fan? - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article...
by iscaria I love Race for the Galaxy. What I love most are the 6-cost developments. I'm looking for any game that has this sort of goal/reward aspect. What I mean by that... I don't mean Settlers of Catan with its 2VP bonus for longest road. This is because you can't plan your entire strategy around building roads; you'll only ever get 2 points. But in RftG you can plan your entire strategy around, say, the Terraforming Guild card or any other 6-cost development because they're not really limited as to points. I also love Ticket to Ride because of its destination tickets. Any suggestions? Thanks heaps!

So tell me if you had a $100 burning a hole in your pocket what would buy?
