What area do you get the most useful info for stories and updates on new tech? Beta culture wouldn't be so bad, but we often have to put up with alpha code that is referred to as beta (remember, beta is functionally complete and into final bug finding and fixing.. alpha is incomplete and bugs absolutely everywhere). In physical products this problem is because of cheaping out on components instead of paying the little bit extra for true quality.

@mona no, it's not based on when you get to play with it. Beta is all of the functions done and dusted with 95% of bugs weeded out.. a beta product should not break with simple functional use - that's the alpha stage of development!

They gave me a bunch of extra time on my sub to make up for the syncing issues, but the issue is that the experience they promise (universal sync across Macs, Windows, and devices) was what I wanted, and I still don't have that. My bookmarks don't sync unless I use the browsers they tell me to, and my email accounts don't sync unless I use the clients they want me to. All in all, a waste of money, and unless it changes a great deal by the end of my sub I will not renew it.

i don't know you know...one of the man things you'll hear most successful entrepreneurs say is get the product out as soon as possible...and work on it as people use it. I definitely agree that paying for it when it's still lacking features and very buggy is wrong - but if it's free and generally useful...i can't complain.

@Mona: If it says "beta" and you pay for it anyway, that's not the developer's problem. You either need the app/tool/whatever that badly, or you're trying to contribute to development... either way, that's a personal decision. Now, things like MobileMe are a different story...

it's a chain of events. I agree, it's not the dev's problem, because a product and its cycle is not solely on one group. and yes, consumers are to blame for shelling out cash for unstable products. It's what burned me out 10 years ago and coerced me into being a "cautious adopter". I just couldn't stomach it anymore, and walked away. For instance, when bulwark freeware apps like Eudora started charging subscriptions while they fiddled through beta after beta, I just stopped upgrading. As others followed suit in some fashion or another, it all became uninteresting.

But that's my gripe. It's SO not OK. I'm Japanese, and in Japan, we are all about the 'newest' and the 'greatest'. In fact, it's ALL about the new shiny things. In this country, we almost have to be late or cautious adopters, because a lot of products are too buggy. I don't understand why and as an American, living in the United States, I don't want to think twice before purchasing.

It's funny how any behavior appears to be okay ethically so long as it involves business. Actions which are clearly deceptive, greedy, and manipulative are dismissed as "just business" and we are told to "blame ourselves" for the fallout. Sometimes I wonder how people could have come to believe that, that as long as an action is in the name of profits it is immune to ethical considerations. I wonder who's purposes that belief serves. Then I buy something and forget all about it. Funny, that.

I became the first subscriber on YouTube for the WindowsVideos account. Just watched the first commercial and it's out of sync. I didnt like the aethetic right from the start and I tried very hard to understand it, but couldnt. I watched it again and tried to get it, but I still am not getting it. Perhaps Im missing something.

No... not this way. Could be just waste of money but after moment of thinking... it's actually working nicely. While it gets negative attention, that is still good for overall ad campaign since it gets people speaking of it. And more time people spend of talking, more closely they remember it.

I don't think the ad is awful and if it came without the microsoft vs apple cultural baggage or the weight of expectations following microsoft's declaration that they were about to unleash the mother of all campaigns on the world I think reaction might have been more positive. I think Loren Feldman has it right - Microsoft don't need to look cool, their stuff just has to work well for the masses.

FriendFeed's growth rate had stalled for a few weeks there. It's now restarted thanks to new beta version. New features get attention which get new users.

Indeed, I was feeling the same thing. It really felt like it was stalling. I was having lunch with a friend yesterday mentioning exactly that, but with the beta it seems to have leaped out of the ditch and back into action. I've enjoyed FF much more today than I have in a number of weeks.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE using small groups of 5 or 10. I can run "best of week" on the small groups & see tons of new stuff. Whether or not I delete someone from my main feed (the "fake follow") is meaningless. People just get swamped out when following 700 people.

Allen: I wasn't a default when I started using FriendFeed. I personally don't like being a default. The recommender engine is useless to me too. We need a far better one. But first they need to rebuild their database. There are far more important things to fix in the database. Why can't you see all items that mention Allen Stern and have two or more likes? Because the database needs major work. If that work gets done then all of a sudden we'll get a better recommender page, too.

Cyndy: I'm at a dance camp in Maine with 630 people (part of a larger community of a few thousand). If everyone at this camp was on FriendFeed, I'd love to have them send stuff into one folder. This community has been running for 30 years, and people have married/divorced/had kids etc... I'm not interested in following 12,000 nameless business cards, but I enjoy following people with good posts, and there are many here at FF! I'm thinking about making 100 groups of 10, to hear more people.

Because corporate IT is a lucrative business, and nobody wants to give competitors an edge. Personally, I'm under an NDA for nearly every corporate IT project I work on. Others are under the same restrictions. The people who are free to talk about it are probably not in a position to talk about it in any informed manner.

I've also found some resistance to covering it among some tech bloggers, not as "sexy" as social media or corporate mergers, for example. IT seems somehow segregated from other tech news, when in reality, IT functioning capabilities affect social media downtime, as well as downtime on corporate sites. That's one issue, among other IT issues that should be covered more.

There's the Register, a ton of CMP news sites, a ton of ZDNet sites, I think IDG covers a lot of this space, there even a few blogs I've found, too. It's just that there isn't a ton of crossover into the social media space.

Seems like the economy, combined with Sarbanes-Oxley has really got the industry stuck in the mud. The transition to SaaS and cloud computing is exciting - but the companies are methodically making the change without a lot of fireworks. In addition, the competitive landscape is becoming fierce - so folks aren't throwing press releases out there like they used to.

How about this. The storage idustry is going to look completely different within five years from the way it does today. Mid-range storage, the fastest growing segment for the last five years may well disappear entirely as applications move into the cloud. Meanwhile, the cash cow of the industry, enterprise level storage will move up a level as customers find they need buy only ultra-high-end storage for those applications whose performance requirements are far outside what can be delivered from the cloud.
