Cats 'exploit' humans by purring
"Cat owners may have suspected as much, but it seems our feline friends have found a way to manipulate us humans. Researchers at the University of Sussex have discovered that cats use a "soliciting purr" to overpower their owners and garner attention and food." - Martin Bryant from Bookmarklet
I love this story - we all knew it really didn't we! - Sarah Hartley

#futr09 Liveblogging Rachel O'Connell from Bebo
Rachel comes from a background in forensic psychology. Got offered a job after meeting head of Bebo on a BBC News debate. She is now in charge of Security and Privacy at Bebo. - Martin Bryant
She's starting with a video from the Bebo marketing dept. She's using Windows Media Player - in a window. You could use fullscreen mode Rachel! :) - Martin Bryant
Video showcases their daily drama videos - Sofia's Diary etc. The First online video series to transition to TV. Trumpeting Bebo's pioneering of 'Engagement Marketing'. A Snickers skin for users to put on their profile etc - making brand enagement fun. - Martin Bryant
Comment: Or turning children into marketing nodes depending on your viewpoint! - Martin Bryant
Bebo staff went for a day out to Thorpe Park. Kids there wantded their Bebo t-shirts. Powerful brand. How to use that for positive social change? - Martin Bryant
Children online tend to interact with their real friends rather than strangers. - Martin Bryant
She's talking about how young people get access to care organisations like The Samaritans. - Martin Bryant
The Samaritans used Bebo to publish case studies of people who got help from them. User response was huge - they really cared. - Martin Bryant
Bebo has also worked in this way for providing careers advice to young people. - Martin Bryant
What about the problem of people not trusting a corporation like Bebo's intentions, fears that they're prioritising advertisers over users. - Martin Bryant
To combat this they declared their policies on online safety. Don't all web service companies do this anyway? - Martin Bryant
Bebo has certainly relaised the power of celebrity. Am I alone in finding that a bit spooky given the age of their audience? - Sarah Hartley
Skepticism aside, they do monitor the network for sucidal tendencies among users and flag them up to mental health authorities. - Martin Bryant
Bebo also ran a Sports Relief campaign to engage young people with the charity. Oxfam's 'Oxjam' too. - Martin Bryant
Sarah - I'm just confused why she dropped in that bit about using the power of celebrity for 5 seconds and them moved on. Weird. - Martin Bryant
Bebo is working with other technology companies and support organisations on a programme called 'Technology for well-being'. In the future these support organisations like The Samaritans might be entirely online-based. An interesting shift. - Martin Bryant
Question time: Does branding and finance of Bebo conflict with social aims? Answer: There is a tension between advertisers and children's wellbeing. It's something they have to navigate. Fluffy answer! :) - Martin Bryant
Problem of adults dictating to children what their network should be. Bebo's aim is to break down those walls. She doesn't explain how! - Martin Bryant

Live blogging from the Futuresonic Gala Launch Event
It begins! Chairman of Futuresonic is open things and reading out housekeeping rules. Yaaaawn. - Martin Bryant
Drew Hemment takes to the stage. Explaining the move from Futuresonic to Future Everything from next year. - Martin Bryant
Theresa Anderson from Jodrell Bank is now on introducing the first performance of the night. - Martin Bryant
'Touch the Stars' is an electronic composition created by an electronic musician and an astronomer. This is amazing - they're going to use a radio telescope to scan the Milky Way live and convert it into sound and visuals! - Martin Bryant
I'm recording an AudioBoo as we speak. Multilayered, freeform music. The noise of the stars fromt eh Radio Telescope is overlaid with synths live on stage. - Martin Bryant
This really is good stuff. Who knew the galaxy was a talented experimental musician? - Martin Bryant
Hear a snippet of it here: http://audioboo.fm/boos... - Martin Bryant
While the stage is changed over for the next act Drew is promoting some of the art projects around the city during Futuresonic, including an 'audio walk' around a secret location tonight. Mysterious! - Martin Bryant
Jamais Cascio is now presenting 'Hacking the Earth' - Martin Bryant
so sad that I didnt read the brochure properly and rsvp for that one.. - Iphigenie
Jamais is discussing the political pressure that holds back 'saving the world' from climate change. - Martin Bryant
Joelle, you could have got in. There were tickets on the door! :( - Martin Bryant
China's coal economy is a key threat to the environment. - Martin Bryant
Even if we stopped global warming immeditately the world would still heat up for 30-40 years thanks to 'thermal intertia' in the ocean. - Martin Bryant
Global climate becoming 'weird'. Hurricanes in the south Atlantic, diseases spreading around the world thanks to climate change. - Martin Bryant
Conflict! Woman in the audience is claiming the presentation is all speculative. Nearly had a fight there! - Martin Bryant
Talking about the concept that 'Nature is no longer natural'. - Martin Bryant
...thanks to mans involvement. So, why not 'hack' the environment? - Martin Bryant
So - we've accidentally warmed the world. Why not use deliberate actions in a similar way to 'buy us time' to reverse this? - Martin Bryant
Injecting sulphor into the atmosphere can reflect heat away from the planet, dropping temperatures. This is not a fix, it's a bandage. - Martin Bryant
This would be the most simulation and model-heavy project in human history. It would provide a 'break' allowing us to reduce carbon emissions, but huge technical and scientific challenges ahead. - Martin Bryant
Sulphor injections could have side-affects. Who controls the descisions? Could it lead to global conflict over whether to inject sulphor into the atmosphere or not? - Martin Bryant
He's now discussing whether we have the right to do this or not. Heckling woman speaking up on her opinions being ejected - Martin Bryant
This woman seems a little drunk and is refusing to leave. Speaker is encouraging her to 'get a blog'! :) - Martin Bryant
She's gone - we can move on. So, do we have the right to 'hack the evironment'? - Martin Bryant
It's a choice between unintended consequences and unprecedented catastrophe - pandemics, mass famine. We need to act now. - Martin Bryant
Now James Cascio's taking questions. 1st one: Global warming is a political problem - we shouldn't 'hack the earth'. James replies: yes, risky, but we have to try it due to our desperate situation. - Martin Bryant
Next question: What are the modeling challenges? Big challenge = granularity (scale) and deciding how complex the models should be. It needs to be open data based on open-source software so individuals around the world can 'remix' it for their needs. - Martin Bryant
Next question: why not grow and bury biomatter (trees etc)? Less risky? Answer: yes it needs to happen but would take 200-300 years. - Martin Bryant
Alfie Dennen says the presentation was quite pessimistic. Asks, can emerging technologies be factored into our plans? Answer: depending on unproven technology leaves us exposed 'if those buses don't come on time'. - Martin Bryant
And that's it! An interesting and inspiring start to the Festival. - Martin Bryant
