Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.

I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for.

The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P

I'm very sad about this. Before leaving for work I sat Orion down and gave him "The Talk". I told him we loved him and that he was going to go to an awesome home soon and he'd be with them forever, that he is an awesome lovey kitten, and to know that we always love him. Yes, I really do this for each kitten we foster, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. As for Orion, he's such an instant purr bucket who doesn't mind being held that he'll find a new home almost instantly.

Thanks Aden & Anna! Tina, yeah, it was two weeks. He was already about 6 weeks when we got him and we want to get him out the door as soon as possible to maintain maximum cuteness for adoption. He was quite social when we got him, all we had to do was build trust and he just blossomed, he weight was the only issue we ever had and he has totally bulked up. I wish I could keep him another week, but that would just be keeping him from his new home. He should be up for adoption by this Thursday or Friday.

He had his operation this morning, so he will be up for adoption by Friday or Saturday. He went on a weight gaining spree the last week we had him. Gained about 11oz and that is with me cutting his food way way back from what he was getting when we were trying to bulk him up. Kol, try changing the script file name to exactly: "friendfeedcommentbottomlink.user.js" and restart Chrome (with "--enable-user-scripts" flag of course). I tested on XP, you're on Vista, but let's normalize the other factors at least.

Ok, thanks for the feedback everyone here. I just posted v0.24 which now has some key layout/style options in a Configuration section near the top of the script. The default position of the "[ Comment ]" link is left (instead of centred). I had originally gone with centred because I found my mouse pointer was thereabouts when I was wheel scrolling up and down the page, so it was a shortest-distance-to-the-target that drove the decision. But April's style is better looking, so it's the default config now :)

Andy, I must have something set wrong somewhere because when I try to edit, a window opens to the Firefox directory. No file to edit. Where does Greasemonkey store the scripts?

Alan, it will be different per machine, for instance Firefox stores my scripts something like: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\agf0etrd.default\gm_scripts\friendfeedcommentbottoml\friendfeedcommentbottoml.user.js But you don't have to go there directly if GreaseMonkey has been associated with a text editor. Right click, manage scripts, then there a button or checkbox of some sort that allows you to choose an editor (notepad.exe, or whatever).

Harold, it's not just you. Chrome 2 has some odd hangup with certain general purpose code that should execute fine but doesn't. When I (or someone else - please let me know) figures it out, I'll update you. I'm sure it's frustrating for you, I know it is for me. Stay tuned :)

Harold, I think the reason our comments aren't bumping this up to the top of this group is there's an algorithm that considers the age of the post (based on creation date I'm thinking) as part of the decision to bump to top or not upon additional comments.

In my experience, the overhead of the greasemonkey extension itself isn't perceptible. The script(s) you have activated on the other hand can be - it all depends on what the script tries to acheive and how well optimized it is (lag can often be a consequence of scripts that make requests to other web services that may not be responsive).

Thanks Micah. I may test it. I just realized there is already a "fix" for the screen jumping when you subscribe that works on at least some pages although it can be a little tricky. Right click on the Subscribe link and open it in another tab.

Nathalie, sorry I don't have page handy, but I know I've read that there are workarounds to get greasemonkey scripts to (largely) work in the Dev version of Chrome :)

FriendFeed has been almost completely blocked in Iran as far as we can tell. We have a large number of very active Iranian users, and we noticed a steep decline in activity yesterday. Graph below.

My russian blue cat's Korean name in Yeoreum, meaning summer in English. "He"(not she) was born on April 28, 2002. He is optimistic and carefree about everything. I got them into the green but it took some doing. Interesting that "legalize marijuana and tax at 10%" wasn't an option as a revenue stream. I wonder how quickly the scenario would change if it were.

Wow, that is amazing to see. I didn't even manage to get it half way down. My mom is in human services and as a recent college grad with no insurance it was hard to cut anything from education, human services, health or state workers. Poor Cali. :(

@Alex - that depends on whether you measure "extent" in percentages or absolutes. In absolutes, of course none are to the extent of CA because it's the largest state economy. But in percentage terms, most state budgets are similarly fucked over the next fiscal session - two if they're lucky.

I disagree. California is uniquely fucked up because of its constitution and system of ballot referendums (prop 13). Other states are able to adjust and respond more effectively as they go along - obviously they haven't stayed deficit free, but the situation isn't *as* dire elsewhere.

It's important to keep in mind that this is a static tool for what is an inherently dynamic problem. You can raise taxes, sure, but you'll also lose an extraordinary amount of revenue in subsequent years as families relocate. @Anthony - but not too many other states have an economy roughly the size of France's. A good comparison here is Texas, which is also very large, very diverse, and is in comparatively sterling fiscal shape.

Just legalize our states #1 Cash crop, and the tax revenues from it should go a long way to shoring up the budget permanently. Then repeat for every other state and things might actually start to get better! Imagine that!

After experimenting and looking at the list, any change of less than a billion dollars is barely worth making. Fixing this is going to be painful, but this is what you get for continuously demanding services, at some point they need to be paid for. The "cut the health and dental care for state retirees maybe be illegal and will be challenged in court" is kind weird: if the state goes bankrupt, those won't be paid out anyway. But I guess everyone gets to feel good about not having to cut that.

That wasn't too hard. I made 14bn in cuts and 16bn in new taxes, giving me a budget surplus of 6.8bn which I will bank for the next two years as the tax base shrinks even more. I gutted law enforcement (over porked as it is), cut hard across community college level (sorry kids, suck it up for a bit and read on your own) but left k-14 intact as well as ALL health and human services.

This is a wonderful application. It's very easy to armchair quarterback things like budgets. It's good to be able to see options laid out in an interactive fashion like this. Should do it more often, particularly before elections.

California is setting an early example for a wholesale rethink sorely needed in the United States. That is: what should government really be responsible for? Great concept! this looked fake because I assumed the camera was used to recognize the location. They use the compass+cellphone.

Well my experience of loactionusing 2G in the uk is the coverage and speed is not good enough to make this a usable app here. If it worked, then as an Iphone app it *could* work

There is technology to recognize location based on photographs, so if that _was_ how it's done (and it's not), Rui, it wouldn't necessarily be fake. I bet you'd have to ship the images off to a server somewhere in that case to do the recognition. I don't have a link handy though, but I saw a video of how it worked. I'll keep my eyes open for it.

Andy: yup, at first I though it could be using photosynth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...) to power it. But it would need a really powerfull processor, or use a server. Either way, it just seemed to fluid to be either. Looks like GPS+compass=nice apps ;)
