I'll happily kiss in front of your camera. Two disadvantages: I'm not gay, and I'm in Belgium :-p
- Irma Vermaat
@Irma.Vermaat This set contains straight people kissing also!!! I included the three above which happens to be gay simply because those were my latest addition to the project. Next time I go to Europe (which I don't know when) I will keep this in mind as many of my Flickr friends are in EU anyhow :)

I did some ski jumping in high school. The 40m hill that belongs to Dartmouth College in NH is the biggest one I ever flew on. It seemed a whole lot bigger than the 30m I jumped before it. It was always a blast!
- Bill Scherer
I visited the ski jump in Innsbruck a year after the '76 Olympics were held there. You could take a bus up the mountain, then walk to the top of the jump hill and even part way up the jump ramp. From way up there on the the ramp, when you gazed down over the edge at the city so far below. One thing stood out from everything else: a cemetery. I couldn't imagine going down the steep ramp on skis and then jumping into space with my eyes focused on a cemetery, but that's what they did!

Looking for bike trips to take for next summer. Upper New York State is a possible venue. A loop of 150-300 km would be the ideal -- preferably bike trails not roads. Any suggestions?
The North County Trailway covers sections of the old Putnam rail line in Westchester county. Lots of good smooth riding....but you'll be going back and forth a bunch of times to get to 300km. http://www.westchestergov.com/parks...
- Bill Scherer
Another possibility is a one way trip where some bike/person/luggage transportation back to the origin is offered (like the service on Le P'tit Train du Nord route in Quebec).
- Brian Sullivan
Where are you based out of? Would you want to be able to drive there with a bike or would you fly there and rent?

The potential group is in Ottawa, Toronto and Fort Erie -- we want something we can drive to.

I have some of the Belgique stainless steel pots/pans. I'm not a huge fan, but they're what I have for now. I have one great 14" non-stick that I picked up at the kitchen supply store that I love.

A mix. I do have a lot of Calphalon, but that mainly b/c I live near an outlet store. The pieces I have are from these lines: Commercial Hard-Anodized and Tri-Ply Stainless. Oh wait, my grill pan is Calphalon One. I also have a couple of really old ones (at least as old as me) that were my grandma's, but I don't use them as much b/c they have the old handles that get hot. I have a...

Most of my favorite cookware is so old that I am not the first owner and there is no visible brand markings on them. The rest is some select pieces of professional non-stick stuff from Restaurant Depot, brand unknown, given to me as gifts by a former employer. I used to have a bunch of T-Fal stuff, but my husband destroyed that stuff by just looking at it (he's a powerful wrecking machine and nothing is safe unless he doesn't know it exists or it's nailed to the ceiling out of his reach)
- April Russo (app103)
We have a Circulon pot and wok, but I'm glad we didn't choose that for a set. The ridges can be a little hard to clean.

Scanpan! It's like Calphalon nonstick, but it goes in the dishwasher.
- MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
Tramontina enameled dutch oven, 6.5 qt. Love it. All-Clad 12" saute pan, like it a lot, kinda wish I had a skillet instead. 10" nonstick anodized aluminum pan, forgot the brand, but if I had to guess it's a Calphalon. Like it. All-Clad saucepan of some sort, don't know size or proper name. I think it was a Macy's exclusive. Nice for a small soup. I had a complete beater of a stockpot...

Vintage Revereware. Not the easiest things to clean when food gets burned in them but they're a nostalgic fave. I have one Lodge skillet which I'm less than impressed with because it was supposed to be "seasoned" yet it wasn't like it was non-stick even with seasoning. I wasn't raised with cast iron stuff so it's still a frustrating mystery to me.
- Spidra Webster
No friggin' clue. I think my 2-quart stainless pot is RevereWare. We use it for almost everything (boiling tea on the stove, making mac and cheese, etc.). Other than that, I honestly can't remember what the other pots and pans are. They are all the same brand (we got one set of pots and pans for our wedding about 7-1/2 years ago, and got another set for Christmas 2 or 3 years ago), but I can't, for the life of me, remember what brand they are.
- Curtiss Grymala
I don't know the brands of any of ours, but I'm not sure there's a difference with cast iron?
- Alix Whitmire
Circulon. I like them though I really hate having to hand-wash stuff... but I know the only kinds that go in the dishwasher aren't worth having.
- Lindsay
Some stainless/copper revereware, some hard anodized aluminum non-nonstick calphalon (rare, these days), some stainless from cuisinart and calphalon, and lately tri-clad calphalon. I think there's one undamaged t-fal nonstick skillet in there... I tossed a bunch of ruined pots and pans the other day.
- Wirehead
Alix, cast iron is slow to heat up and is really heavy. But it does heat evenly, holds heat well, and can get extremely hot. And it's super durable.
- Andrew C
from Android
Heh, Lindsay, all the stainless steel stuff can go in the dishwasher, but it's completely unnecessary if you are cleaning them properly.
- Alex Scoble
Warmaiden, you rock! I like that set.
- Alex Scoble
Paderno Stainless (not sure which model, but it is all excellent) and Lodge cast-iron. Pots and pans don't belong in the dishwasher, just like good knives.
- Kenton
On the subject of putting pots/pans in the dishwasher, I completely agree (same with cutlery)
- Alex Scoble
I've got a little bit of everything. A couple of Calphalon skillets, some Cuisinart stainless, some cast iron, and one big ole' non-stick skillet from the restaurant supply.
- ha3rvey, not a sweetheart
Lindsay, we got rid of our Circulon because it was so hard to actually keep clean. Food always seemed to get stuck in the little grooves. The stainless stuff we have now is so much easier to clean.
- Kenton
All-Clad and Le Crueset. This stuff works great, cleans easy, lasts forever.
- Bill Scherer
uhhh Le Crueset is high on my wishlist. Only problem would be that it ties me even more to the stove. Bette's wrists don't like the heavy cast iron stuff too much.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Analon/Calphalon is good, middle-of-the-road, non-stick cookware. Le Crueset is great stuff...but a little salty in price for me. Tramontina is good stuff too, but a little more pricey.
- FF's Bubba of Arizona
I adore my Green Pans! http://www.green-pan.com/ They cook very evenly and well, are nonstick but without PTFEs (which kill birds), and are incredibly easy to clean. I would marry them and have GreenPan babies if I could.

I love Cool Whip, but real whipped cream is far superior in every way (except for the fact that you have to actually make real whipped cream, and with Cool Whip you can just pull it out of a tub). I made some homemade whipped cream for the pumpkin pie we had left over from Thanksgiving, and it rules. I would love to get one of those cool CO2 cans that automatically whips the cream, like they have in some coffee bars.
- Curtiss Grymala
No discussion needed here Real whipped cream takes it hands down!

I almost always buy the 'real' thing rather than the imitation. Less crap in the real McCoy usually.

If you are lazy, canned whipping cream is still way better than Cool Whip.

Only thing I don't like with aerosol anything, is that you're getting more propellant than product. I won't buy that PAM oil for that reason. Instead we got some 99 cent plastic plant sprayers, and fill that with regular oils.
- Ian May
You're absolutely right Alex. At our "chosen family" Thanksgiving a couple people brought Cool Whip but I had made a huge bowl of fresh whipped cream because I knew people would try that lazy cool whip shit. Not a single person chose Cool Whip over real whipped cream.

of course but cool whip is just so easy
- VAL D. Zone
I'm sad to say that over the past weekend, I saw a member of my family use cool whip (and generic cool whip, at that) instead of whipped cream. Craziness! I've heard of people freezing dollops of whipped cream so that they don't have to whip it up fresh every time they want it. I've considered trying it, but it would be too dangerous if I found I liked it.
- Katy S
Mo: because it's cool Whhhhhhiphhhh
- Morgan Haley
Is this even a discussion:? A debate? Of course, real whipped cream is better. DUH. But come on...diving face deep into a tub of Cool Whip is it's own joy.

Hate Cool Whip. Would take the aerosol stuff over it any day, never mind REAL whipped cream.
- Martha
And technically you can buy real whipped cream in a can, even if it isn't as good as stuff made from scratch

I often turn to Dream Whip, in place of Cool Whip. At least it has MILK in it, not just OIL!
- Ladybug Heather
Dream Whip is that powdered stuff. I used to mix a packet of that in with a box of cake mix before adding the wet ingredients. Made bigger fluffier cakes. (that was before I learned how to bake a cake from scratch) I don't classify that in the same category with either whipped cream or Cool Whip.
- April Russo (app103)
If you have a stand mixer, it's not really much harder to make whipped cream.
- Alix Whitmire
I'll take either. Just as long as it's white and has sugar.
- Rodfather
I thought you were all talking about Miracle Whip for a second. Kraft make too many "whip" products
- Bryce Roney
and on the subject of mock cream, nothing beats real whipped cream - it's not that hard to make all you need is some thickened cream, sugar and an electric beater
- Bryce Roney
Real cream wins! Or else the Cool Whip peeps are just not commenting. I always make more whipped cream than I need and use my teaspoon scoop (the one with the little thingy in it that pushes the cream out when you squeeze the handle) to put dollops on a cookie sheet, put it in the freezer, then after they are set, stick them in a bag. Perfect for hot chocolate... but my kids sometimes get caught sneaking them straight to their mouths.
- Trish Haley
Thank you, Bryce. Cooks have been doing this for years and some do it with a hand crank beater or a whisk(as I switched over to years ago). Just put the bowl and whisk in the freezer for 5 minutes. Get some good heavy cream and make sure its got a good fresh date
- Melanie Reed
Trish, Yeah, I like the dollop trick too. And yes, I have caught myself eating them straight from the freezers as well. ;)
- Melanie Reed
I'll go out on a limb here, since I know I'm in the minority, but I like Cool Whip...in fact, Fat Free Cool Whip...because I count calories & fat grams, so FF CW is fine with me. Since I'm used to it, I find that real whipped cream is too rich for me.

In the past couple of weeks, the tap water at my house has gotten very bad. The shower smells like a swimming pool, and it's unpleasant to drink. Anyone have experience/recommendations with whole-house water filters?
Does it smell like sulfur? We had this happen a while back and it was the hot water tank lining. If it breaks there is some harmless bacteria that can get in there. Test this by checking the hot water running and see if it smells/tastes different than the cold only running.
- Jason Shellen
I'm pretty sure it's some kind of chlorine compound since it smells like a swimming pool and is in the cold water.
- Paul Buchheit
and it just ruined my cup of tea -- I had to pour it away and startover with filtered water :(
- Paul Buchheit
It would be expensive to put a whole house filter on to remove the chlorine. I have a small Reverse Osmosis system. Any tap water that will be consumed comes from the RO system. The fish is happy in it too! I got mine here: http://jimstrains.com/page...
- Bill Scherer
looking into it (i had never thought about putting the whole house on filtration) i see the costs range from $700-$7,000 (basically speaking) and i bet you can get govt rebates too, so its not as costly as i first thought
- chaz2b
My mom has a whole house filter system and loves it (definitely on the lower end of the price spectrum quoted above). It helps reduce mineralization in her various water fixtures in addition to removing that pool smell (she couldn't take a shower without her eyes watering).
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
We have 2 water filters. Whole house by Purwater FHT-384 http://www.purwater.com $75 (installed at water main in basement) and a 5 stage osmosis unit by Watts Premier https://www.wattspremier.com/product... $200 (installed under sink with spigot). For the whole house filter, be sure to get the higher end filters made with carbon that filter out "scale" deposits (best quality)
- Susan Beebe
Maybe you should have that water tested to know exactly what's going on?
- Sean McBride
Have you been getting a lot of rain where you are? Sometimes they'll increase the chlorine because of run-off. Not likely to do damage to you, but it's still foul.
- Junebug (aka Sarah Jill)
In Ft Lauderdale we got a notice in our last water bill that they were going to be dumping extra chlorine in the water most of this month. I found a website that deals with this subject extensively http://safeusawater.com They don't sell anything, just provide info. I emailed them the notice I got and they put it on their site so they are pretty responsive.
- Victor
Victor, that site seems to be a referred funnel (they sell your info): "4) We route your request to 3 Water Quality Professionals in our exclusive network. We work with only the most reputable and experienced companies. 5) You will be contacted directly by Qualified Professionals who will provide you with a free price quote. You decide which company you will work with."
- Paul Buchheit
Whatever you go with, think about dropping a line to your water district. If you can smell that much chlorine, that isn't good for people to be drinking. They should be held to account for that.
- Spidra Webster
Portland residents west of the Willamette must boil their water now.
- Ruchira S. Datta
Paul, I live in a healthy house constructed by a Purdue Engineer, John Bower. If you are concerned about shower water alone, Sears makes a reasonable system for the money. That catches most of the problem and then an RO system after that will take care of the rest. http://www.amazon.com/Healthy... They lived next door to me for awhile till he built another house closer to town. :)
- Melanie Reed
Paul - consider calling some local plumbers and inquire with them what whole house water filters they install. Get some product model numbers and check them out in advance.
- Susan Beebe
Perhaps ping your neighbors to see if they have the same experience? It could be your pipes or some other local problem rather than a systemic problem.
- Todd Hoff

Thankfully I don't think I've ever got on the wrong train and I can't sleep on trains anyway.
- Kol Tregaskes
Wrong train once; realised after about three stops and was able to rectify the situation. Fallen asleep coming back from London (Kol, you just need to drink more to do this) but since the end of the line was one stop further than where I wanted to get off it wasn't a big deal either.
- Mark H
Not exactly.. I've woken up at the station *before* mine, convinced that it was my stop and scrambled off the train, only to have that, "Oh, bollocks" moment as the train pulled slowly away from the platform...
- Andrew Terry
That picture is awesome. And yes, I've fallen asleep on the bus several times missing my stop. I've gotten on wrong buses working on auto-pilot, forgetting I needed to take a different line.
- Admiral Anika
I didn't fall asleep and miss my stop, but I did miss my stop because I was talking to someone.
- Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
Oh yeah.In my case I was simply lost in thought and totally missed the stop. Fortunately I got off at the next station and caught the train back. Was only 20 minutes late for my lecture ( but nearly 40 minutes later than i usually get in)
- Roberto Bonini
Distracted by card games, several of us managed to not only miss our stop, we ended up back at the station we started at. Therefore missed our connections (the last of the night), rerouted through another city, and ended up getting home, changing, and going straight to work the next day. Not good.
- Jaclyn
I can sleep on the way in to Grand Central Terminal, because it's the last stop so I can't miss it. On the way home I worry about missing my stop, so I usually don't fall asleep.
- Bill Scherer
I've definitely missed a stop, being sound asleep (long and early commute). The other times that I fell asleep due to too much drink, for some reason, I woke up just in time to get off at my stop. Although that one time, i wasn't looking too pretty with my glasses all askew and drool on my chin as I stumbled off the train. Good times.
