Ok. The reason I don't date dudes in tech is simple: 99.9% of the men need empathy classes. Concentrated empathy lessons. #fact
Turbo-like - Spidra Webster
That must be be horrible. I feel your pain :-) - Todd Hoff
Dislike and disagree with your % - Benjamin Golub
I'd put the percentage at about 80%, for all men. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
Stats are made up. - Andrew David
Mona, do you ever get men who feel insecure because you're in tech and they're not? Or do things just never get off the ground with men like that anyway? - Ruchira S. Datta
only 23% of the time Andrew - Jeff (Team マクダジ )
Jeff is only 50% correct. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
Jimminy's half right there. - Akiva
Akiva, is about 75% right. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
Empathy classes taught by whom? - Micah
Blu T, more apropos is how Mona defines being "in tech". - Ruchira S. Datta
I might define it more broadly than some others, e.g., I would think of a biologist as being in tech, someone else may not. I don't think biologists generally fit Mona's complaint. - Ruchira S. Datta
It looks like Mona subscribes to Simon Baron-Cohen's (yes, Sacha's cousin) Empathizing-Systemizing theory. - Ruchira S. Datta
Biologists know how to party. Also, their conferences include dancing. That's why I've moved into biology. :-) - Ruchira S. Datta
Blu T: PR, no. Marketing, probably not, except the product managers at Google were definitely in tech and I think they might have had some involvement in marketing. Sysadmin, yes. Social media expert, depends--there are definitely different angles of approach. Analyst/researcher, yes. Patent attorney, yes. - Ruchira S. Datta
Blu T: That's surprising. So a pure mathematician would not be "in tech"? - Ruchira S. Datta
I think Mona may be lowballing that estimate a bit. - Steven Perez
If you put any credence in Baron-Cohen's theory, then "tech" might be a job that requires Systemizing. Except, then is a historian in tech? What about a historian working on cliodynamics? A geographer? What about a phylogeographer? - Ruchira S. Datta
Blu T, I suspect that even if in fact that is what the manager spends most of his time doing, if the engineers don't believe the manager is "in tech" he won't be able to manage well because the engineers will dis him--they will think he doesn't know what he's talking about. - Ruchira S. Datta
Blu T, well, I would take the manager being "in tech" as the default, which I think is the most useful thing to do. - Ruchira S. Datta
Blu T, any reason why, other than the delicious irony? - Ruchira S. Datta
WHOA what happened -- just stepped away for mtg and being pulled into another one. Darn real-time ;) BRB - Mona Nomura
Mona, Blu T is busy marrying you off to someone in tech. ;-) - Ruchira S. Datta
I'm so sorry to hear Mona - I couldn't imagine what you're going through. Is there anything I can do to help? ;-) (Sorry, but I'm married) - Jesse Stay
Being married 10 years I've mastered the empathy thing - Jesse Stay
Ya - not looking to 'train' ;) - Mona Nomura
ah but will you date one who has already been trained? - Dan owns Comicsforge.com
I agree with MVB - I'll watch this one unfold from a distance. :-) - Dan owns Comicsforge.com
Ah come on Mona, I'm in tech! - imabonehead
Well once you (females) train them, please pass them this way -- so sick of being a therapist! - Mona Nomura
Awww :) - Mona Nomura
What is this...empathy you speak of - Mo Kargas
Exaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaactly. - Mona Nomura
*installs module* Ok I got it - Mo Kargas
sudo apt-get install empathy. Mona, all done! Where are you?!?! - imabonehead
Empathy is important. Learn to fake that and you can get away with anything. - I like big Botts from FreshFeed
lol Glenn - Eric
You'd have to be pretty empathetic in order to convincingly fake empathy, though! - Victor Ganata
"The reason I don't date dudes in tech is simple: 99.9% of the men need empathy classes." - Who cares. ;) - John Craft
Perhaps you just need to better empathize with them :) - Paul Buchheit
You know the difference between an intoroverted Computer Scientist and an Extroverted Computer Scientist? The Introverted Computer Scientist looks at his feet when he's talking to you. The Extroverted Computer Scientist looks at your feet when he's talking to you. - Roberto Bonini from iPhone
Sorry, us technically minded losers have a much harder time figuring out what other people are thinking - LANjackal
Ah, but LANjackal -- empathy is not about what others are *thinking* so much as what others are *feeling*. I've met some techdudes who have trouble expressing feelings about things that don't (a) plug into the wall, or (b) come with a charger that plugs into the wall. ;-) - Ladyepiphanybug
I meant "feeling" as well ... point taken - LANjackal

oAuth needs to be more used. - Rich from IM
richard - agreed, given up pwd pairs to old school ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
authentication really needs a better/serious solution, not a good idea to give out your twitter password all the time, oAuth - metoo. - schilke
on the other hand, the simple auth with Twitter is surely partly what has led to the 3rd party eco system - Rich from IM
Agree about the constantly giving out Twitter passwords :( - Neal "thePuck" Jansons

- schilke

I haven't turned on FF's new mirror-to-twitter feature.
I don't want everything going to Twitter, rather I want the ability to send something to Twitter manually. Only a small number of my FF posts belong in my Twitter stream. I'd also like the ability to send someone else's posts to Twitter, a sort of approximation of "Like" applied to Twitter, from FF. - Dave Winer
I think perhaps FF's destiny is to be an editorial system. Or is it a bookmark tool? I use it that way mostly because it has the ability to save a picture along with a text clip. - Dave Winer
I do like the idea of sending stuff to Twitter manually. - Chris Nixon
That is a really interesting idea, having FriendFeed with the ability to "retweet" something. You got my vote. - Rob Diana
It gets even more interesting with an open architecture for pushing stuff to blogs, email, SMS, etc. Twitter isn't the only interesting destination. - Dave Winer
I too would like to control what comments (and content) go to Twitter on a case by case basis. Friendfeed + Twitter = Future Merger partners. And soon imhuo (in my humble uninformed opinion). - Wayne Schulz
Twitter --> FF makes sense, as FF is aggregating my activity. FF --> Twitter feels funny. RSS posts into Twitter feel similarly wrong. Don't like Twitter as newsfeed aggregator. - Marko Bon
How do you turn this functionality on? - Peter Ghosh
Under your account settings. - Roberto Bonini
I've turned ff2twitter on / experimental though, I'd definitely vote for more flexibility, too - schilke
I am trying the Friendfeed-to-Twitter repost feature now - Stowe Boyd
it does get too noisy, especially comments from FF. another vote for the like/retweet function. Although if you reshare it and have ff->twitted that already works. - Paul Arterburn

Suppose I go in the booth and say "I use the PC but I think it sucks." Is Microsoft obligated to publish that?
I have to say that I'm no Microsoft fan, but having recently built a barebones system that came with a licensed copy of Vista Home Premium, I am pleasantly surprised at it. It runs at least as fast as XP, and more smoothly. I've had no driver issues at all with existing peripherals. - Ian May
