"Briefly: Following up news that Hugo star Asa Butterfield had been offered the lead role in Gavin Hood's Ender's Game sci-fi adaptation, confirmation has now arrived, in two forms. Butterfield himself took to his own twitter (@asabfb) to celebrate, stating, "Oh yes. Im really doing it. F*** YEAAA!!!" after tweeting "battle school, here I come" and a few good Ender Wiggin quotes: "Welcome to Dragon Army." Then Variety followed up with confirmation as well, saying he has "closed a deal to star as the title character" in the film, being produced by Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman, as well as Odd Lot Entertainment and Summit. Read on! Variety's latest casting update also hides a few other interesting details. Now that Butterfield, currently age 14, is set to star as young gamer prodigy Ender, they can focus on casting other areas, like the lead adult - Colonel Hyrum Graff, Commander of Training for the International Fleet, an elite boys' military academy where Ender is trained in strategy...

I still don't see how this will come out as a movie...

"Producer Brian Grazer, who is working on the somewhat pared-down Dark Tower franchise with director Ron Howard, just told MTV that The Dark Tower is going to be an HBO TV series. And that he's still planning on doing a movie. Before we freak out, remember that this isn't an official announcement; there's no press release or anything. Maybe he's just doing Hollywood-speak and hopes that it'll be an HBO series, or even an HBO-type series. Maybe HBO and Grazer are just talking, and Grazer is optimistic they can work out a deal. Hell, even if Grazer and HBO are close to finishing negotiations, which means there's still time to fall apart. On the other hand, Game of Thrones has done very well for HBO, and them looking for another fantasy series -- especially on based on a very popular book series -- seems incredibly plausible. Fuck it, I'm going to freak out anyways."

"Now, after a two-year break, Torchwood is finally coming back, with Torchwood: Miracle Day. And just like 2009's miniseries Children of Earth, Miracle Day has a huge, Earth-shattering premise, laced with paranoia and a heaping spoonful of misanthropy. We've seen the first three episodes, and so far it's almost as good as Children of Earth."

"Fringe star Anna Torv has insisted that the show's writers know how the series will end. The actress told TV & Satellite Week that the sci-fi drama's final episode "has been written". "I've been told the ultimate final episode has been written," she said. "[The writers] know where they want us to go, but they don't know yet when we will get there." However, Torv added that plans for the show's series finale "could still change", noting that the writing team have only sketched out a "skeleton" premise. "It's more of a dance between the audience, the creators and the cast about what works and what doesn't," she explained. "It's nice that although the skeleton of what is going to happen is there, it's still a dance.""

Keepsakes opens as starfaring a police procedural. All the usual suspects are there - the grizzled older cop who's seen it all, the keen new starter who's convinced he has the answers and is going to shake things up, and the fast food joint across from the cop shop, where the real gossip and (of course) real work happen. Keepsakes is certainly no whodunit though. The perpetrators are revealed in the first sentence, and named in the third paragraph. Instead, the story morphs into a more ambitious and thoughtful piece about how our motivation can't be unpicked from our nature, and the surprising strength of our attachment to the things we treasure most.

"Beijing is taking action against an increasingly popular genre on Chinese television. From the China Hush blog: In these time-travel based TV plays, usually the protagonist is from the modern time and for some reasons and via some means, travels through time and all the way back to the ancient China where he/she will constantly experience the "culture shock" but gradually get used to it and eventually develop a romance in that era. Though obviously the Chinese audience is fond of this genre of shows, the country’s authority -General Bureau of Radio, Film and Television, to be exact, is not happy about this trend and calls a halt to the making of this type of drama.[...] The authority’s decision was made on the Television Director Committee Meeting on April 1st. – but obviously it’s not a prank to fans of the drama genre. The authority has a good reason to go against the genre. "The time-travel drama is becoming a hot theme for TV and films. But its content and the exaggerated...

The New Yorker's Richard Brody suggests that what's making censors uncomfortable, is less what these dramas say about China's history, than what they imply about its present: What the Chinese time-travel plots, as described above, have in common is the notion of escape: leaving contemporary, Communist-dominated China for the China of another era, one where, despite mores that are, in...

"The original pitch for Star Trek has been unearthed from series creator Gene Roddenberry and with it comes some interesting details on the show. Star Trek first premiered on Sept. 8, 1966 and boy were there a lot of changes between the pitch and the shows air date: The original captain was not James Kirk or Christopher Pike, but Robert April The ship was named U.S.S. Yorktown and not Enterprise The navigator was not a young Russian hotshot named Pavel Chekov, instead he was a South American hotshot named Jose Ortegas Spock was the "first lieutenant" and described as having a reddish complexion and, of course, pointed ears, and was likely"half Martian" The 16-page outline also contains Roddenberry's now-famous description of the show as a sort of sci-fi Wagon Train, and makes no mention of a transporter beam. Instead the crew would travel to and from planets via small recon vehicles. Early ideas for communicators, universal translators and phaser weapons are also found within."

"Whoa. I'm not sure if most of you skipped right passed the very first teaser trailer for D.J. Caruso's I Am Number Four or just forgot about it soon after watching it, but this is the trailer that finally makes this movie look awesome. Yahoo has debuted a brand new, full-length theatrical trailer for I Am Number Four, the DreamWorks sci-fi adaptation of a very new novel starring Alex Pettyfer, Dianna Agron, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer and Kevin Durand. We finally get a real taste of the action and style beyond the high school-set storyline, and I'm very impressed."

"Paul Di Filippo is a science fiction novelist and short story writer of wide genrebending influence, as well as a journalist, a sometimes comics writer, a mail art fiend, and a bunch of other things that are probably very hard to describe. Also, the first person to use the word “Steampunk” in a book title. So he can be blamed for quite a lot."

We are anxious to read Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi («Scalzi reinvents the first-contact story between humanity and those cuter-than-Ewoks aliens known as Fuzzies») and Rule 34 by Charles Stross (the story of Detective Liz Kavanaugh, «who has to draw the line between innocent online fantasies and illegal -and deadly- scams»).

A woman accepts a man, expecting that he will change. A man takes a woman, expecting that she will never change. They are both disappointed. Yet within this very disappointment is the primal source of all new men and all new women. - http://www.40kbooks.com/...
