FigShare is continuing to evolve in an attempt to be as useful as possible for scientific researchers. To this end, all datasets uploaded to FigShare are now licensed under CC0. http://figshare.com/figblog...
If data sets (and figures) were added to something like Web of Science/Scopus search (and citation tracking), would that change researcher's attitudes toward sharing data?
- Brian Westra
good question, Brian, would it make a difference to you personally?
- Claudia Koltzenburg
It would to me. I ask because I've heard that DataCite is working on a deal to add their data citations to Web of Science. Since WoS gets a lot of research traffic, and you could also potentially track citations of your data set(s), I'd think it would be a strong incentive for more data sharing, even for the reluctant researchers.
- Brian Westra
I had already contacted WoS and needed to follow up, which I just have :) I have also submitted to google scholar. I will report back when/if I get responses.

If all works as planned today, I'll have a simple dataset with figure to post to FigShare this evening...
- Björn Brembs
@Björn: am curious to see what may qualify as "simple" (not joking)
- Claudia Koltzenburg
Great to hear @Björn, this is how research should be done - In other news, WoS have been in touch with the following "We currently do not include figures and datasets in our products. All of our current source material for the Web of Science comes from peer-reviewed journals, books or conference proceedings. However, we are always willing to understand the value of new resources to our customers and would be happy to speak to you about FigShare." We'll just keep knocking on doors until someone lets us in.

@Claudia: Just over 100 flies (one per each line in the ASCI text file) with 7200 data points each. About 30 flies in each of four groups. The figure will simply be a power spectrum of the time series for each group with error bars. Isn't that simple?
- Björn Brembs
Not everything went well. Technician did not prepare enough experiments. Will see if we have enough...
- Björn Brembs
@Björn, I was impressed by your description of a "simple" example and it's fine for me to wait for a bit to see it :-) anyway, cheers to your team!
- Claudia Koltzenburg
Is there an RSS feed of my FigShare contributions that I could pipe in here?
- Björn Brembs
Hey Bjoern, it looks fantastic. When I look at the tabular data it doesnt register, for large datasets it may be best to upload as a separate dataset (eg. http://j.mp/eutpcs) and then link the files to each other? With regard to RSS feeds, there are two options Im working on fixing, the first is user activity eg http://figshare.com/members... but this incorporates all...
- science3point0
I uploaded the file, but the table on the page only shows about the first 15% of the data (in columns, but all rows) - is that on purpose? http://figshare.com/figures... The file I can download from there also is just a small fraction of the data file I uploaded...
- Björn Brembs
Hey Bjoern, its hard to tell what it should look like without the original. ie. for me it looks good. Do you have it stored on google docs or could you email me a copy. The version I downloaded is 2.79MB. Cheers :)
- science3point0
Ok, the downloaded file now looks ok, I had to modify the delimiter (don't ask, it makes no sense to em either). Compare it to the one displayed on the page. There, the last line ends with "99,70,53,81,67". Search for that sequence in the CSV file and you'll see what I mean by truncated. It's probably not important, if the downloaded file is ok... So thanks, Mark, for another great service!
- Björn Brembs
Thanks Bjoern, happy it is working! I just hope that it continues to be useful to you and others. The figure is probably my favourite visually on FigShare thus far. Keep doing what you're doing! I'll get cracking with the feeds :)
