Why YouTube Caps Videos to 10 Minutes - http://www.steverubel.com/why-you...
"What's funny is people have always told me my videos are too long, but new data from Blip.tv shows they are wrong. People do watch longer videos and their most popular shows are all long-form video folks. The thing is, if you click "play" on a video you're engaged and as long as the content continues to be interesting to you you'll keep watching. No one complains that the SuperBowl is "too long" or that Spiderman was "too long." The idea that online web video can't be longer is totally ridiculous and anyone who says that just hasn't looked at the numbers. Sorry Tamar. YouTube is doing this to protect itself from copyright issues. I've had discussions with the team. As long as you are someone who creates original content and can demonstrate that and you won't use other people's content they'll let you have a director account and let you upload longer videos." - Robert Scoble
Robert, This is good to know. I'll let my boss know. We have ALL original content and we could use the longer time. Thanks! - Melanie Reed
I agree I prefer watching Long-form video (at least 15 min) over short-form online when it comes to a "series". But personally when I think YouTube, I think random shorts, not a series. I know that's not exactly true but that's YouTube's niche. They shouldn't try to tackle all things video and 10 minutes of random stuff (interviews, kids goofing off, etc) is fine with me. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Well, with YouTube partnering with Google for Non-Profits, I think there's going to be an explosion of new growth in this area. We have been using it for sometime now and will invest more of our energies in the future. Video is very important to our outreach and communicating what we do to potential volunteers and donors - Melanie Reed
That's great Melanie, YouTube is a great platform and wish you the best success using it! I was just giving my perspective of YouTube's niche in my view versus other video platform services out there. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Hi Robert, do you have any idea why youtube does not allow more than 2000 videos per channel when uploaded via api? we built a nice application, the giapotv (www.youtube.com/giapotv) and got stacked with 2000 upload. Thinking to upload the new videos through emails via mobile setup. What do you think? - gianpaolo
It's economical to keep the videos at 10 minutes per clip - due to the fact that they pay for more bandwidth the longer the person stays on a video. Whether this evens out in costs if folks go to more videos because they can't get enough in the 10 minutes is yet to be fully understood, even with log tracking. I'm sure some of the youtube number crunchers can predict churn and how a 10 minute limit or 15 minute limit would cost them x or y. - Peggy Miles
