Feature Request: I want to hide any item that says "Twitter" and "FriendFeed." That would greatly reduce the noise here today. I'm doing that manually, but doing it manually sucks cause I still have to see the items and deal with them. Now, if we could do that automatically...
Someone could probably write a Greasemonkey script to do that :)
- Deepak Singh
Of course, if I had said filter this item would be hidden from view. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Me too. Here's my prediction for today - there will be several threads about how friendfeed is better than twitter, followed by several about twitter being down, those will lead to talks about scale, which roll back to talks about friendfeed being better than twitter. Throw in a couple of tricks for using friendfeed and we're done. Any takers.. i'm willing bet on this :)
- Doug Brooks
I give it two more minutes before we see the first blog post: "FriendFeed killed Twitter, again."
- Robert Scoble
@Robert If this filter came into being, I would just start saying "Twiter" and "FreindFeed" just to piss you off. ;)
- Nathaniel Payne
Nathaniel: funny, but you wouldn't know I was autofiltering on those terms, or what terms I was autofiltering on.
- Robert Scoble
yup. twitter has been unusually sick this week. I am loving the rooms feature as it really adds a nice filter for content and helps people gather around a specific subject matter. Vanity rooms are less effective at that.
- Rodney Rumford
FriendFeed kill Twitter? Not going to happen hahah - it's really at the top - exactly 2 mins
- Doug Brooks
@DougBrooks have you seen Robert's Facebook status ad for FF: "is wondering if there's any advantage to Facebook's new Mini-Feed import vs. FriendFeed." Interesting, yes? {BTW, I'm a taker on your scenario}
- Barbara K. Baker
It may be awhile before that happens - if they can't do anything about grey text quickly and easily, attacking word/term filters may be a bit much. :(
- Lucretia Pruitt
@BarbaraKBaker I'm not sure if I've seen that or not? Is there a link? BTW "problem loading page" at twitter right now :).
- Doug Brooks
Scoble's is wisely asking for boolean logic driven query to be available with the HIDE function; I will go one more...please add to the existing search functionality too. Still can't figure out where the "Advanced Search" is that I hear about. Louis? help!
- Susan Beebe
In addition to a filter, I also think it would be nice to have a follow mode for threads that are interesting. Maybe in a tab of it's own.
- Doug Brooks
I'm betting that within a few months the next big invention will turn up that makes both Twitter and Friendfeed look like boring old services. The entire FF tech elite will jump ship and bail out to the next great thing. The circus starts all over again. And the average Web user? Couldn't be bothered by all the noise the techies produce. We just love ourselves don't we ;-)
- Alexander van Elsas
@alexanderVanElsas well of course that's true. Society as a whole is doubling our knowledge every year so it's a certainty that these services with evolve and becoming something entirely different. That's the cool part i think. Those same average web users missed the irc and bulletin boards too (both of which i am reminded of with ff).
- Doug Brooks
@Doug, true, but us techies make such a big deal out of it, I understand where Robert is coming from, even though he started the echoing himself ;-)
- Alexander van Elsas
FF should add support for third party plug-ins for filtering, presentation/visualization, notifications, etc.
- scott anderson
Real-time text and video chat should be next... how about plug-ins that allow us to better connect our social services?
- Larry Kless
BTW I just noticed of the last 6 items Robert shared on FF, 3 are about FF and Twitter. Robert, time to hide yourself, greatly reduces the noise i bet ;-)
- Alexander van Elsas
I like noise. Most people don't. If you only design a product for those who like noise you will fail.
- Robert Scoble
If it was automatic, you would not be able to see your own post!
- Mot Faerin
I don't mind the noise either actually. All the info is like a river passing by. I take a swim every once in a while. But you (Robert) are partially the spark that set off a lot of items that discuss either Friendfeed or Twitter or both. I can hear the echo in a deep, empty hole every time I look. Just look at TechMeme right now where about 12 so called Alist bloggers are on top, and none of them is saying anything new (Echo Echo)
