How do we know it's truth? There's no proof, we don't have exposure to their internals. A couple of weeks ago it was "We don't know what's wrong", now it's "Our top users are pounding the database". This is a big reason why you don't say these things in public. They may believe in their heart of hearts that this is the issue, but performance tuning is extremely tricky, and very often your first ideas are not the issue. - Bwana ☠

I'd totally rather have Google be honest and open about their difficulties rather than a) admit nothing, or b) tell us "something is technically wrong" or c) give us the usual PR spin, lies and bullshit we were all used to getting from companies P.C.E. It doesn't escape me at all. You assume what Twitter says is true, and again I say, we have no way of knowing. If the cause of system degradation were always the hardest hitting transactions, then performance tuning would be cheap :) There's a reason why these service management standards are in place.
