Interesting. On Twitter 600 followers went away, but on friendfeed I gained followers. Discuss why here:
1. Friendfeed is FAR more resistant to noise and "flooding." If I tweet too much it hides most of them. - Robert Scoble
..because it's easier to keep up with you here. :) - Daynah
2. There's an expectation here of conversations that isn't over on Twitter. It's like the world has decided that you can pimp your blog and stuff over on Twitter once or twice a day, but if you do much more than that then they'll go away. - Robert Scoble
Aggregation. Friendfeed reduces the time spent on micro-netsocial activity. - Pascal Barbier
3. Friendfeed's participants are at least 17x smarter than the stuff I see on Twitter. So, people here are expecting to learn something. At least that's what I feel. Twitter seems like many people just want to see stupid stuff, cause that's what they put into their streams. - Robert Scoble
3. It seems like FriendFeed was designed much better for conversations. Twitter was designed more like a news feed. If I didn't use TweetDeck, Twitter would be impossible to use. - Shawn Hickman
maybe Twitter was more noisy and less structured for their liking? - Chris Farrugia
To tell you the truth I haven't been on here much at all to know why this would be better or not. I guess it would be a wise investment to delve a little more into this place maybe ;) - Nathalie
Because twitters @replies blocking is complete pants. It needs the ability to block @replies from individuals not be an all or nothing setting. No offense but I really don't want to see Scooble's 50 @replies a day. - Chris
(You called someone not smart. You gain FF followers anyway.) - Rodfather
Robert, thank you for your good-natured, good-humored generosity. You have single-handedly created an engine of a gift economy. You are continually giving away everything of value that you learn, to everyone who will listen. I've learned about countless innovative new products, and their creators, from you over the years. I don't know what you get in return for all of your sharing. Your forward motion creates a relative wind of blowback from a few not used to your energy. What would they do without you? - David Newman
Essentially, FriendFeed does everything Twitter does and more. Whilst there will always be a place for Twitter as a headline based attention directing service, it lacks the capacity to develop the conversation to the extent that is possible here. As the social media is, surprisingly enough, about being social, services which truly encourage conversation are likely to be the most successful. On top of that, Twitter is somewhat fickle. - TheLovableRogue
Yes, agree far less flooding on friendfeed. This would have been at least 4 tweets from you thus far were on it Twitter. - Dean Clark
It is easier to drink from the firehose on FF... unless you turn on realtime. ;) - Steven Byrnes
No offense to you but it might be because you sometimes act like a jerk with others on Twitter I have noticed and that for sure stops me from interacting you on Twitter at times. - Tejas Patel
Not everybody is in a good position as you are of talking and seeing the smartest people, they still need to talk and they talk the non geek stuff. - Tejas Patel
I think followers are like the economy. It has ups and downs, but it has an upward trajectory. It's the shaking of a tree, and leaves fall off. It's nature. Just two days, ago, I lost 11 followers after the tweet: "Testing the last.fm iPhone app in Newcastle." Not that bad of a tweet. But I only have almost 100 followers for sharing good links. 11 followers is like 10%! It's ebb and flow; cutting off the dead weight. - alexander horre
Because twitter is suspending spammer accounts. - Christian Burns
I think Christian's explanation, that Twitter is suspending spammer accounts, makes the most sense why one would loose so many Twitter followers today. - Vinko
i only see @replies to people I follow, but i almost clicked unfollow after the journalism rant. RT's from people i don't care about, followed by your response ... c'mon man. most know you are a good journalist. i enjoy your journalism style, but I don't care about people talking shit to you. either you pissed off 600+ users with the RT's today or twitter did a spam sweep. if you continue to use RT like that, I'll probably unfollow you on twitter/FF and just read your blog. - Gerard
probably just spammers, as mentioned below - Sam from twhirl
I think that most people on Twitter might be turned off when their phone beeps a couple hundred times a day because they actually follow active people. They were expecting to be able to once and awhile send a reply back and not hear anything - well obviously, they were wrong. - John Bellone
Assuming you're still around 25K followers, that's 2-3% - could well be statistical noise. - Rob Kramer
Twitter is no longer the early adopter core, as a result they're trying to find tools that work better for what they want. Might as well have fun on friendfeed now :-). It might also have been fake accounts that were removed. - Richard A.
Spammers' suspension. I agree with Christian, Vinko and Sam - Alexandros Georgiadis
Friendfeed is a smoking jacket, and twitter is a wet tshrit contest. - Stephen Breen
More followers left after I wrote this post. Yes! What's weird is friendfeed has continued to go up. - Robert Scoble
Maybe you have a leak that you need to patch on twitter? LOL j/k - Colide81 (James)
Every time I go back to twitter it feels so "2 years ago". FF is still on the early stages, where the real conversations are and real people following each other. - Martin Añazco
It's much easier to organize large flows of info on FF and follow conversations and topics, so I think the volume of tweets can be an issue for those just on Twitter-esp if they are not twitter savvy and able to organize their incoming tweets. And many of the things you tweet about stir comments which would explain why you are gaining popularity here. - Kelly W.
its easier to talk here :) - Zafarali
here we go again...o_O - The Real sofarsoShawn
You can plant a seed on Twitter and then watch it grow on FriendFeed - FriendFeed is like a nursery where information and ideas can blossom - whereas some of these ideas are just lost in the noise of the twittersphere. - Chris Loft
I follow Scoble on FF only - but I follow his likes/comments as well. His tweets weren't leaving any room in clients for more personal twitter friends. - Paul Arterburn
During what period of time? Overnight? - Curt Mercadante
Twitter was having some issues with follow/unfollow. Though, you DID tell people to break off if they can't handle volume - Ed Shahzade /NextInstinct
Since Twitter allows you to change your name, it looks like people are unfollowing you, but if you look at your follow, they appear. - Shevonne
FriendFeed is better for tracking high-volume (or "noisy") folks thanks to the lists feature. Perhaps people wanted their Twitter stream a little quieter but still wanted to follow you? - Sarah Perez
duh, it's cuz you dissed twitter in favour of friendfeed, they just listened to your orders sir and migrated: that's the power you hold over us. And yes ~ you tweet too much - The Real sofarsoShawn
Your shares on Friendfeed are meaningful to the people rather some random thoughts on Twitter - sirishkumar
@scobelizer for ol' times sake...;o) - The Real sofarsoShawn
Because you keep saying "Discuss why here:” and pushing people to FF. BTW, are you tracking the number of followers you gain/lose each day such that you know 600 is statistically significant? - Ken Sheppardson
they were disheartened when they realized you weren't scoobydoo - mal
I have the opposite goin' on .... weird - Charlie Anzman
same for me, Charlie - lots more Twitter action at the moment... - Iain Baker
I don't keep track of the number of followers I have on either service. Not what I am here for. - Andru Edwards
I always feel like I have to keep up with Twitter because stuff just falls off. FriendFeed feels less so but I still am getting used to it. - William
My guess? People are tiring of Twitter and moving to FF. At the same time, Twitter is probably killing off more accounts it thinks are "spam." - NikeRAS
maybe the penguin effect when that one guy took off - others followed... - mal
Twitter flakes out and randomly dropped followers. - Christian Anderson
On FF I can preemptively hide any tweet that has no likes or comments. Also I can hide any conversation after I've got my money's worth from it, so it doesn't keep popping up to the top while I'm reading other people. Twitter just isn't flexible enough. - Deborah Fitchett
You probably already know this, but on Twitter Scoop there is lots of discussion about TWITTER cleaning out spammers today. So may be a large part of your unfollows today were really this. I - Bill Romanos
Bill very interesting revealation - bcultral
I also think there is a rise in the use of people doing mass follows and then getting auto follows, waiting a few days and then unfollowing, so as to boost their own stats. Sad but true. - James Ketchell
maybe a bunch of the 600 you lost moved over to Dr. Phil? - Thomas Hawk
600 of your followers died, Robert. We don't live forever you know. The new followers are their kids, trying to figure out where their parent spent all their time on the computer. - Jack&Cleo
+1 Thomas! LOL - Susan Beebe
I think there has been a sweep of spammers across the board today, its hard to tell for Robert as he has so many tweets, but if you use http://tweeteffect.com/ on most accounts you can see a definite trend. - James Ketchell
Twitter's easy and simple UI make it ideal to keep up with close friends while painfully easily to loose context of the not-so-close friends' updates - charmgene
