This is Gist.com -- the best computers, smart people, crammed into small Seattle office and two more employees joining tomorrow. I love real startups. This is how our economy will come back.

I see the Diet Coke but where's the empty pizza boxes? p.s. my first startup was launched on top of an old door held up with cinder blocks and a file cabinet as a 'desk'

At my first start up we worked in a cave that we dug with our own hands. We used free AOL CDs glued together for desks. It was crazy!! ;-)

Cave? You were lucky to have a cave! We used to work in one room, all hundred and twenty-six of us, no furniture. Half the floor was missing; we were all huddled together in one corner for fear of falling! ;)

I worked at a tech startup here in LA, were 4 of us were crammed into a storage room filled with desks from a school that no longer existed. FF 3 years, I temped at another internet startup, that had this huge swanky spot next door to MTV. My cubicle had about $6K worth of stuff in it. There were a couple hundred people there doing the work of 20. They went belly up in 9 mos.

so glamorous in its 3rd world working conditions.

I would like to have an internal team like this to work with. Bootstrapping can get lonely from time to time.

Pfft. That's what gratuitous VC funding looks like. REAL startups are bootstrapped by founders on their own with no paid employees at all.
- Paul Montgomery
Robert: How does the small number of startups and smaller number of founders/employees even begin to help the US economy? You'd be lucky if the numbers at startups came to 200,000. Plus it takes them 5+ years to get to anything like meaningful revenue in a good market, like the late 90s. If there is a recovery, it will have to come from science research, then manufacturing, not startups.

You should stop by the school and say Hello. :-) Not quite a startup, but technology and education, well Ok, I think it is interesting. LOL! And I'll totally understand if you can't. r/d
