I am from a Republican suburb of Chicago, even though I've been a Bay Area resident for over 30 yrs. You can't just generalize about "middle Americans." They are individuals who think, and they can change. Somehow, the people of Illinois elected Obama as their senator, which was unthinkable when I grew up there. Obama knows this, obviously.
